Governor speaks at annual Membership Meeting and Banquet Lark named citizen of the year The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce celebrated 76 years at its annual Membership Meeting and Banquet held on Feb. 10, after being rescheduled due to wintry weather. The event was held at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. Keynote speaker for the evening was Governor Pat McCrory. Governor McCrory addressed the crowd in an interview-style format where six questions from the local community were posed. He noted that changes his administration has made to update the tax code and make our state more attractive to corporations has led to lower unemployment rates dropping us from fifth to below the top 30 in the nation. He also said that his administration is committed to training the rural workforce in advanced manufacturing jobs. This push has led the state Board of Education to create a high school curriculum track that is designed to prepare students for jobs after graduation. In addition, he urged our county to “find the niche and develop a vision on how

he Vance County Department of Social Services, in partnership with the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, conducts a monthly employability skills class entitled “Steps to Self Sufficiency” for eligible Work First clients. The class, held at the Henderson Workforce Development Office, is also partnered with the Vance-Granville Community College Human Resources Development Deptartment. class is taught by Sherri Alston of the Vance County Department of Social Services and Connie Ragland, job developer/Work First coordinator for the chamber. In order to model a workplace setting, there are strict guidelines in the classroom, which include signing in and out daily, calling in advance if going to be absent, missing no more than two days and completing a minimum of five job searches per day. Upon completion of the program, participants receive an updated resume as well as a certificate of completion. In addition to the classroom responsibilities, Ragland is tasked with the responsibility of meeting with employers to discuss hiring needs and maintaining a positive rapport in the

recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution and demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of Henderson and Vance County. Dr. Lark has faithfully served our community and citizens for over 40 years. In the unrevealed introduction of Dr. Lark, the qualities that stood out were gentleness, character and wise counsel. Tucker said of Lark, “The common theme among the many who endorsed our 2013 Citizen of the Year is that he truly is a gentleman, well-known throughout Henderson and Vance County for his strong faith in God and who enthusiastically demonstrates his love of community. Having dedicated much of his life to the betterment of Vance County, he has made a lasting and transforming difference in the lives of many. His exceptional leadership skills are strengthened with a unique ability to think and act promptly and effectively, to arrive at logical conclusions under sometimes-adverse circumstances and to always be a gentleman in every way to everyone. Those special and uncommon qualities, along with his extraordinary ability to handle difficult situations, work to create harmony among the boards of directors on which he devotedly serves. The respect and trust of our Citizen of the Year recipient is unsurpassed as evident by the reliance on his advice and input sought by local organizations, as well as those at the state and regional levels. Through the assistance of the Work First coordinator, employers can trust that only the most qualified candidates will be referred, which means less time and money spent on their hiring process. Hiring these individuals helps businesses to maintain a positive image in the community as well as reduces the number of unemployed persons in the county. Employers have the advantage of the Work First coordinator referring only eligible clients, which also diminishes the pre-screening process. And, as member of the very first board of directors for the Henderson Family YMCA, he served as its chief volunteer officer. He is a founding member of ACTS (Area Christians Working Together in Service), an acronym that he coined. Dr. Lark was also influential in the planning process and implementation of Community Care Partners, which is recognized as a Community Care of North Carolina program affiliate. Through the work of Community Care, healthcare management services are provided to the uninsured and those in need. Short has also held a regional marketing consultant position for a national skilled nursing and rehabilitation company. A native of Swansboro, Short has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in public health, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is certified as a senior professional in human resources. Married to Warren County native Tony Short, Val resides at Kerr Lake and Roanoke Rapids and has two grown children, Anna and Adam. Val currently ser ves on the boards for the Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission and Franklin-GranvilleVance Smart Start and has ser ved as an ambassador for the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce for about 2 years. “The Chamber provides many opportunities for networking, recognition, and visibility for local businesses and the foundation has certainly benefitted in all of those areas. Through the chamber, we have been able to identify other nonprofit organizations in the area that may be interested in pursuing grant opportunities with us. Networking events, such as Meet Me in the Street, Ribbon Cuttings and Business After Hours, have enabled us to meet member organizations and businesses and talk with individuals one-on-one about the foundation’s role in our community. Being an ambassador gives me opportunities to call upon new and existing members with the primar y purpose of telling them about the chamber, but I also get the chance to introduce them to the foundation and talk about the good work that we are doing. The opportunity to promote the foundation and ensure its visibility in our community is one of the most important outcomes of my involvement with the chamber and I am ver y grateful for this,” says Val.
