Why your business credit scores don’t get the credit you need by Marco Carbajo

Here are five reasons that may prevent your business from getting the credit it needs: 1) A weak or incomplete business When you apply credit profile — for a new credit line The report and or request a credit demographics of limit increase for your a company play an business, suppliers, important role in creditors and lenders how creditors assess want to see how your creditworthiness. A company has handled business with issues its existing credit such as poor financials, obligations in the past. outdated registrations This enables them or high-risk industry to determine if they classification codes should approve your can trigger a denial of request and to help credit or unfavorable determine what terms credit terms. So it’s vital they should offer. that your company’s Lenders often use documents, financials, business credit scores filings and registrations to help them assess are complete, accurate the level of risk a and up to date. company presents. 2) Limited or Business credit scores negative payment are calculated based history — Your on the information in payment track record a company’s credit demonstrates how well report. In most cases, your company handles higher business credit its current and past scores mean lower credit obligations. A risk to a lender when company with limited extending credit to a or negative payment business. history will have a Your business credit difficult time getting scores are calculated by credit. a statistically derived Aside from paying algorithm, designed invoices in a timely to calculate risk based on a variety of factors. Although each business credit reporting agency has its own unique scoring models, scores and ratings, other types of information — such as financials, payment history and credit diversity — all play a role in the strength of your business credit reports and scores. manner, keep your credit usage consistent. Regular purchases and timely payments are what establish a positive payment history; it’s what lenders want to see. 3) Low credit limits — Low credit limits across multiple accounts plainly reveal to creditors that a business has limited credit capacity. However, a business with high credit limits reveals that it has the ability to handle large credit obligations. As a result, a business will receive much larger credit limit recommendations, especially if the company has low revolving debts. If your company has a positive payment track record with an existing supplier or creditor, it may be in your company’s best interest to request a credit limit increase. 4) High credit utilization ratio — While the size of credit limits reveals what amount of credit your creditors are

willing to extend to your company, credit utilization ratios show how well your business manages it. Creditors view a high credit utilization ratio as a business with excessive debt with a greater risk of default. Keep credit utilization ratios at 50 percent or below to avoid falling into this high-risk category. Low credit utilization is a clear indication that your business can handle its credit obligations. Doing so will ultimately benefit

you during the credit application process. 5) Lack of credit diversity — The types of trade lines your business has reporting play a substantial role in the credit granting process. Limited credit diversity may limit your company’s ability to qualify for certain types of funding. Having short term financing, revolving accounts, installment loans and open accounts reveals to creditors that your company can manage various types of credit responsibly.

Bear in mind your business credit scores will certainly have the tendency to fluctuate with each business credit agency, so it’s vital to monitor your business credit profiles on a regular basis. While business credit reports and scores are essential tools for lenders, suppliers and creditors to assess credit risk, other factors such as banking history, revenues and personal credit scores may play a larger role if a business lacks depth, diversity and density in its files.

Henderson Collegiate is a public charter school open to all students regardless of race, income and prior academic success — none of these are considered or asked about when enrolling at Henderson Collegiate. The school opened in the summer of 2010 with just fourth grade and is adding a new grade level with each new academic year. The school currently has grades four through seven and has a total of 400 students. Eighth grade will be added next year. Henderson Collegiate replicates a model that its founders implemented through their experience with Teach For America and the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP). Beginning with the belief that all students can learn and the explicit expectation of college success, the model is rooted in an ethic of hard work and extensive time on task. The Leadership Vance class celebrated with a graduation dinner at Central Baptist Church on Monday, July 14. Rebuilding Hope Inc. hosts Servants on Site

Scott and Catherine Hughes (third from right and fourth from right) receive the 2013 Small Business of the Year Award. They are joined by guest speaker Jim Crawford (fifth from right) and other attendees of the 2014 Small Business of the Year Luncheon.

Satterwhite Point Marina named small business of 2013

Small business was celebrated at the 2014 Small Business Luncheon hosted by the chambers of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, along with the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center. The event took place at Henderson Country Club on Wednesday, May 14. The presenting sponsor was CenturyLink. Highlighting the event was the awarding of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber’s 2013 Small Business of the Year to Satterwhite Point Marina and owners Scott and Catherine Hughes. Scott opened Satterwhite Point Marina in 1987 with two employees, and today they employ six. The marina is located on picturesque Kerr Lake at 6470 Satterwhite Point Road in Henderson. The nomination letter supporting Scott and Catherine said, “Satterwhite Point Marina is very valuable

to our community with Kerr Lake being one of our greatest assets in bringing tourists to the area.” Chamber president John Barnes added, “Scott and Catherine work very hard in promoting Vance County, the community and the Chamber of Commerce. They are always present at Chamber and community events, as well as supporting educational initiatives. They have worked hard to build the Marina into a crown jewel for Vance County. Their work and community involvement brings many visitors to Kerr Lake who add greatly to our local economy.” The business offers boat storage, beautiful lakeside cabin rentals, a public launching ramp and a gas dock and convenience store. The Hughes also announced that they will soon open Rudd’s Creek Marina in Boydton, Virginia. The company can be reached by phone at (252) 438-4441 or on the web at satterwhitept.com.

During the week of June 21-28, local non-profit Rebuilding Hope hosted Servants on Site, a week-long outreach program to make repairs to homes in Vance, Granville and Warren Counties at no cost to the homeowner. These efforts are made possible through the volunteer efforts of groups of youth and their leaders from as far away as Florida. Local groups also go on-site daily to serve lunch to the working groups. Materials used in the projects are donated or purchased with monetary donations from local area churches, individuals and businesses. A loaned dump truck or trailer at each job site allows for no on-site dumpster charges. A total of 144 youth and adults stayed at Crossroads Christian School, where the event was staged. The 12 groups these individuals made up were regrouped into 15 work crews to do 13 roofs, one room rebuild and two handicap ramps (one crew built both). Breakfast and dinner meals were prepared and served at Central Baptist Church

Participants gather at Crossroads Christian School for a week-long Servants on Site program to help repair homes for free to those in need in the Tri-County area. each day by a team of nine volunteers. Nightly worship services were also held at Central. In addition to the youth groups, other volunteers numbered more than 100 and consisted of a leadership team who planned the event and were actively involved, local men who volunteered as crew chiefs and supervisors, runners who delivered extra tools or materials needed to job sites, a team who supported at Crossroads by cleaning showers and emptying trash, and four local youth pastors who

developed the theme (this year “ONE — One Purpose, One Sin, One Gospel, One Savior, One Mission”) and wrote daily devotion material for groups and crews and preached at the five worship services. This annual event

is just one of many opportunities to serve and help others in our local area. To find out more about what chamber member Rebuilding Hope Inc. does and how you can volunteer or help in other ways, go to rebuildinghopeinc.org.
