Express Employment office manager speaks to STEPS class The October STEPS to Self Sufficiency class featured guest speaker Pam Rhoads, office manager for Express Professionals in Oxford. Rhoads, who has been with Express for nine years, shared her personal success story of how she relocated to this area from Pennsylvania with no prior office experience. She stated that her primary work background was in the hospitality industry. However, she added that with a willingness to learn and being given the opportunity, she did her best to learn as much as she could about staffing services and the rest is history. “In my neck of the woods, I had not even heard of a staffing service and didn’t know what they did,” said Rhoads. Now

she is an advocate, noting that more and more employers are utilizing the services of staffing agencies to save themselves time and money. Rhoads also stated that Express closely screens candidates and pays attention to appropriate job matches. “We do not want to set anyone up for failure,” she said. “People will always say they want to work and that they are willing to do anything, but if we don’t feel like their skills line up, we will not send them to a client. In the past, we have done that and things don’t typically work out,” she added. Rhoads shared some key pointers with the class on topics ranging from how to have a successful interview, how

to get and keep a job, things not to do during the interview (i.e. bring others, dress inappropriately, etc.). She also shared a history of Express, the counties they serve, the number of clients they contract with and the number of individuals they currently have actively working. The experience was one that the Work First clients will always remember. Two of the clients in the class were hired within one week of Rhoads visit. For more information about the program or if you would like to be a guest speaker in the STEPS to Self Sufficiency class, contact Connie Ragland at the chamber at (252) 438-8414 or workfirst@hendersonvance. org.

Col. Larry and Cheryl Elman of the Dave Elman Hypnosis Institute visit STEPS class On Thursday, Oct. 26, participants in the STEPS to Self Sufficiency class, spearheaded by Sherri Alston and Connie Ragland, were visited by guest speakers Colonel H. Larry Elman and wife, Cheryl Elman, the founders of the Dave Elman Hypnosis Institute. Larry is the son of the original founder, Dave Elman, hypnotherapist. Class participants were treated to an afternoon of relaxation that included stress relieving techniques, meditations and more. The Elmans, who have been in business for more than 30 years, also brought three students from their

current class to share in this experience. The students shared everything from tips on how to live a “stress reduced” life to “how to quit smoking through hypnosis.” Cheryl Elman demonstrated some of the techniques using her students as the subjects. The Elmans would like everyone to know that “hypnosis” is not typically what people believe it to be. Often times, individuals will think they have to watch the moving pocket watch, while going into a deep state of sleep, then do outrageously ridiculous feats such as barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken.

“This is just not true,” says Elman. “Hypnosis is simply training the brain how to respond to certain stimuli.” The Elmans have traveled all over the country doing workshops and certifying other individuals. They are currently on a worldwide tour but are always taking appointments for upcoming classes and trainings. The Dave Elman Hypnosis Institute is a member of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and provides this service to the STEPS class participants free of charge. The Elman’s can be reached at (252) 432-2205.

She wanted to make new contacts, strengthen the relationships she had and be able to access information and resources in the community that she works. That’s when she decided to become a part of the chamber’s Ambassador team. When asked about her favorite pastimes, Nix puts spending time with her husband of 18 years and their three children first. Her hobbies include writing, reading, camping and outdoor activities.

Clareese Moss

Marylaura Christopher McKoon was born in Norfolk, Va., but moved to Henderson at age 4. She attended Vance County Schools and graduated from Wingate University in 1989. She received her Masters of School Administration from N.C. State University in 2008. McKoon has 16 years of service in the Vance County Schools with 7 years in the classroom at L. B. McKoon graduated from the chamber’s 2013 Leadership Vance Class and immediately joined the Chamber Ambassador team. She believes that there are two characteristics that are essential for the local community. “I try to possess positive energy in all areas of life and search for positive points in all situations,” she said. “I believe that we must all work together to move our community forward and it is my hope to promote the public schools and learn more about the businesses in hopes of building partnerships and promoting positive teamwork,” McKoon continued. Moss celebrates 30 years with Avon C

lareese Moss is celebrating 30 years of service as an AVON Independent Sales Representative. Moss says of this “adventure,” “I was raised with an AVON lady. My mom sold AVON for over 40 years and when she began having medical issues and had to stop, I promised her that I would continue selling as long as I could to follow in her footsteps.” And she has done just that. In her 30 plus years, Moss says she has never missed an AVON order. She has more than 175 clients that she services personally and more than 25 of those clients have been loyal to her for over 25 years. As Moss puts it, “That’s loyalty!” In addition to selling personally, Moss has recruited more than 225 associates in the AVON leadership program. “I love spreading the AVON business and showing others how to benefit from this self-employed venture as I have done,” says Moss. Moss has received many honors from the AVON Company. Those consist of President Club Award and Honor Society Member resulting from more than $20,000 of personal sales in a year, top sales/recruiting and Best of the Best. Moss says, “Mom always said I made her proud and I cherish those words. She taught me how to appreciate my customers and how to give them the best customer service I can. She said to always be honest, reliable and treat them as you want to be treated. I think of those words a lot in all my businesses.” AVON was Moss’s first endeavor as a self-employed businesswoman, but she also has several other businesses as well. “I started

Then, I lost over 65 pounds with my all-natural weight-loss pill and started selling Level 4 – it’s been successful and I now have over 225 clients taking it. It’s a great feeling helping others get healthy,” says Moss. Moss also participated in the chamber’s Leadership Vance 2004 class and from that decided that she wanted to be involved with the Chamber. She has served as an active Ambassador for 9 years and attends ribbon cuttings and Business After Hours and works at chamber events and takes part in chamber networking events as well. Moss says, “I appreciate the support they have given me. If you participate in Chamber

events, you will see new faces, make new business contacts, and just get your name out there. Involvement is part of the reason all my businesses continue to grow.” Moss is married to Bobby Moss, who she says is her best friend and her right hand in all her businesses. She has one son, Dale Ayscue, and two grandsons.

She is a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church and says, “I love my church family at Sandy Creek and God has been good to me in every way.” To reach Moss and any of her businesses (AVON, Shortcakes Embroidery & Screen printing or New You with Shortcake), call (252) 492-5769 or go to shortcakesembroidery.com.
