Annual banquet held Jan. 31: Semprius CEO speaks The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce celebrated 75 years of service to the local business community at the Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet held Jan. 31, at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center. Over 400 member representatives attended the event. Joseph Carr, CEO of local highefficiency solar module manufacturer Semprius, was the keynote speaker for the evening. The company designs and manufactures the smallest and highest efficiency solar modules in the world. Using patented cell technology and stateof-the-art manufacturing processes, Semprius is leading the way to costcompetitive, sustainable generation of solar electricity. Carr was instrumental in the design and innovation of this technology. In his address, Carr talked about the Chamber celebrating 75 years of service to the community and the people who had the “vision” to better their community by forming it. “Vision without action is merely

Small Business Administration licenses first fund in early stage capital initiative Hatteras Venture Partners of Durham is the first licensee in the Early Stage Innovation Funds initiative, a part of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Small Business Investment Company capital investment program. Hatteras Venture Partners (hatterasvp. com), a venture capital firm based in Research Triangle Park focuses on seed and early stage opportunities in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, and related opportunities in human medicine. HVP was selected because it demonstrated that it has a strong team with a clear, focused strategy and a track record investing in an undercapitalized region. “The new year is the perfect time to celebrate new businesses and win-win opportunities like the Early Stage Initiative,” said administrator Karen Mills of Small Business Administration. “The Early Stage Innovation Funds initiative promotes American innovation and job creation by encouraging private sector investment in early stage small businesses. And by licensing funds like Hatteras Venture Partners IV, we can expand entrepreneurs’ access to capital at no cost to taxpayers.” High-growth, early stage companies commonly experience a gap in the availability of funding between $1 million and $4 million levels. This gap is often referred to in the venture capital industry as the “Valley of Death.” Since January 2006, less than 10 percent of all U.S. venture capital dollars went to seed funds investing at those levels, and approximately 70 percent of those dollars went to just three states: California, Massachusetts, and New York. The Early Stage Innovation Funds initiative targets this gap by licensing and guaranteeing leverage to funds focused on early/seed stage investments. SBA’s improved licensing times under its Small Business Investment Company debenture program complement the Early Stage Innovation Funds initiative. The administration has committed up to $1 billion in SBA-guaranteed leverage over a five-year period for selected Early Stage Innovation Funds using its current Small
Business Investment Company program authorization. Licensed Early Stage Innovation Funds can receive up to a maximum of $50 million in SBA-guaranteed funding to match their privately raised capital. Early Stage Innovation Funds must invest at least 50 percent of their investment dollars in early stage small businesses. Recently, the administration called for applications from fund managers for year two of the five-year initiative. The deadline for filing the Management Application Questionnaires for year two of the Early Stage Innovation Fund program is March 1, 2013, at 5 p.m. EST. Application details are in the call notice published in the Federal Register: federalregister.gov/ articles/2012/12/18/2012-30431/smallbusiness-investment-companies-earlystage-sbics. These companies are privately-owned and managed investment firms that are licensed and regulated by the administration. They use a combination of funds raised from private sources and money raised through the use of administration guarantees to make equity and mezzanine capital investments in small businesses. There are nearly 300 of these companies with more than $18 billion in capital under management. More information on the Early Stage Innovation Funds initiative and the regulations governing these company may be found at sba.gov/inv/earlystage. The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee held a new member orientation Dec. 13 in the Chamber Board room. Attendees were served donuts, coffee, juice and chicken minis donated by Chick-fil-A. Old and new members gathered to absorb information as to how to utilize their Chamber membership to its fullest potential. Membership director Rachel Hedrick discussed ribbon cutting and Business After Hours opportunities, Member-to-Member discounts, Member Spotlights and other free promotional options available to Chamber members. Chamber president John Barnes did an overview of the Chamber website and membership listings found there.

Tucker is also an active church member who serves in the church Sunday school ministry, the music ministry, and as a deacon. Additional service to God and community is demonstrated by weekly driving of a church van to pick up children from area schools and carry them to the church’s discipleship and children’s choir programs. With a strong belief that there is no profession more vital than the teaching of our children because their young minds do indeed hold the future, Tucker is a strong advocate of educators and strong champion for the mission and success of the Vance County School Foundation. He has participated in the North Carolina Senior Games and many National tennis competitions. While playing in the 2007 regional finals competition in Kentucky, Tucker and a doubles partner learned of a medical emergency of another player. Using their CPR expertise, they eventually revived the cardiac arrest victim. The nomination letter that told this story continued, “I mention this, not because our nominee would ever seek recognition for this heroic act, but rather to demonstrate that involved people, like our nominee, put themselves in the position to not only enjoy life but to also be of benefit and service to others in unique circumstances.” Finally, one letter said of Tucker, “An ideal citizen, as quoted by respected author,

Crawford was presented with a plaque from the Chamber. Though no longer the local representative, Crawford was petitioned by newly elected Governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory, to chair the budget committee of his transition team. 2012 Chairwoman Catherine Hughes gave the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce Annual Report highlighting the previous year’s accomplishments. 2013 Chamber of Commerce Chairman Hal Muetzel and Chamber President John Barnes presented the 2013 Program of Work which identifies the organization’s goals for the upcoming year.

Embers Christmas: a welcomed event
The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce hosted the “Christmas With The Embers” holiday concert on Dec. 7 at the Vance-Granville Community College civic center. Over 700 attended this year’s concert which included the group’s unique costume changes and a new mix of songs. Attendees young and old enjoyed holiday classics and “not-soclassics” as “Santa” tossed goodies to the youngsters in the crowd. “The show is always a favorite and offered some new and fresh entertainment this year. The event is well-supported by the
local community and we’re happy to host it” said Chamber president John Barnes. Leadership Vance schedule set Applications are available for the upcoming 2013 Leadership Vance Program. Interested professionals who live or work in Vance County are invited to apply. The program will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants who will be selected to represent all backgrounds, occupations and geographic areas of Vance County. The Leadership Vance program is designed to create a group of informed and dedicated leaders who will contribute to the community. Brochures for the current year are currently available online and at the Chamber office. Five County First in Families is a non-profit that provides funding to support individuals and their families who are experiencing developmental disability or traumatic brain injury in Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Vance and Warren counties. Self-defined needs may include assistance with basic needs, home furnishings or modifications, childcare or respite, adaptive equipment, or connections to various opportunities in the community; whatever it takes for people to live and participate fully in their community. The organization partners with local businesses, citizens, and agencies to receive the lowest possible price for products and services families need. The Henderson-Vance County Chamber’s “Member Spotlights” continues to be one of the most popular free Chamber benefits. This special section of the Business Outlook Tabloid and Chamber web-site allows member businesses to list their upcoming public sales, special events, special products and/or services for free. A link on the Chamber homepage takes all viewers to this special page. Criteria set for each listing is 50 words or less typed in a Word or text document using 10 pt Verdana. The name of the company is listed first and then the complete description of what is being spotlighted. Entries are listed monthly. Any entry to be listed in “Member Spotlights” will have a deadline of the 25th of the month preceding when the entry should appear. Entries are listed alphabetically on the page with the company name in bold and the description in normal type. All are uniform in appearance. The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee honored Chamber ambassadors at a breakfast on Dec. 20 at Crossroads Family Restaurant.
