Small business luncheon set for May 19 The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating local small business by hosting the annual Small Business Luncheon on May 19. The event, co-hosted by the Franklin, Granville and Warren County chambers and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center, will be held at the Henderson Country Club beginning at noon. Sponsors are CenturyLink, presenting sponsor; Express Employment Professionals, silver sponsor; and Kittrell Job Corps Center, bronze sponsor. The luncheon will feature keynote speaker Todd Davis, area vice president of sales for CenturyLink’s MidAtlantic Region. He leads a team of approximately 110 salespeople and engineers

serving business clients. Davis began his career in commercial banking at SunTrust Banks Inc. and worked for BellSouth International prior to joining Sprint. He graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a bachelor’s Davis degree in history and holds a master’s in business administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. After joining Sprint Corporation’s executive development program in July 1996, Davis has held positions in consumer Internet services, strategic planning, product development and sales and marketing. He has led a seven-state sales region

since the mid-2009 formation of CenturyLink. Davis, his wife Catherine, and their two sons live in North Raleigh. The annual spring luncheon is part of a national effort to educate communities on the importance of small businesses to the local economy. A quote from the United States Small Business Administration states: “We recognize that small business is critical to our economic recovery and strength, to building America’s future, and to helping the United States compete in today’s global marketplace.” SBA statistics show that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. They also create 60 to 80 percent of new jobs in the country. The event will conclude

with the presentation of the Vance County Small Business of the Year. This will be the 10th consecutive year that the Chamber has presented this award. Franklin, Granville and Warren counties will also award Small Business of the Year honors for their counties. Former recipients of the Vance County award include Henderson Wellness Center, Franklin Brothers Nursery & Greenhouses Inc., Ballet Arts, Interiors, Fogg’s Exxon, Vance Furniture, Gray’s Gourmet, The Peanut Roaster and Raemac Transportation. The event will include lunch and the seminar. For more information or to register, contact the Chamber at (252) 438-8414 or rsvp@ hendersonvance.org.

Chamber Challenge to be held at Henderson Country Club on June 14 The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce‘s 13th annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 14 at the Henderson Country Club (rain date: June 21). In addition to presenting sponsor BB&T, Maria Parham Medical Center, Toyota/Scion of Henderson, Kerr-Vance Academy, Satterwhite Point Marina and Walmart Distribution Center #6091 are gold sponsors for this year’s event. Silver sponsor is Parkview Plaza/Sprinkle Properties. One of the most popular of all Chamber fundraisers, this event is a great way to network with other Chamber members. The Captain’s Choice (Superball) tournament will begin at noon with lunch. Following lunch, the event will kick-off with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded for the top four teams, with other prizes being awarded for the longest drive, hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest putt. A dinner and awards ceremony will take Please see GOLF, page 2

The annual program, now in its 17th year, concluded with a dinner and ceremony at Middleburg Steak House. Event honors administrative professionals The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon honoring administrative assistants and other professional support staff on April 26 at the Henderson Country Club. The speaker for this year’s event was AlexSandra Lett, noted storyteller, publisher and author. Through her company, Southern Books & Talks, Lett publishes books and presents programs on a variety of topics. As a writer and as a speaker, her intention is to express her creativity and to help others discover passion and purpose in their work and meaning in every aspect of their lives. Lett addressed the crowd in the character of “Sandy

Lynn” who told stories of her Southern roots and childhood on a farm in rural North Carolina. In her presentation, Lett encouraged attendees not to listen too much to what others say about you, figure out what you’re good at and what you want to do, and have a good attitude. The sell-out event was one of the most attended ever with over 160 present. The luncheon is sponsored each year by the Chamber of Commerce of Warren County, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Franklin County Chamber, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center.

Noted author AlexSandra Lett addresses a crowd of over 160 at the 2011 Administrative Professionals’ Luncheon.

Norman Shearin retires as school superintendent Norman Shearin, superintendent of Vance County Schools for the past eight years, was honored at a retirement banquet on April 26. A large crowd gathered in the Southern Vance High School cafeteria to offer their best wishes to Shearin, who officially retired on April 30. “It seems like he has been here 15 years,” Vance County Board of Education Chairman Margaret Ellis said. “He has been such a great superintendent and has always erred on the side of the students, and we all thank him for that.” During the event, piano music was presented by Eaton-Johnson Middle School Principal Larry Webb, Ph.D. Also speaking at the event were Vance County Commissioner Terry Garrison and former commissioner Danny Wright. “On behalf of the county commissioners, it is an honor to congratulate you on your retirement,” Garrison said. “I want to commend you for the calm, poise and the leadership you have

shown as superintendent. You are going to be missed and we wish you the very best.” Wright added: “Dr. Shearin would never let us forget the most important thing for county commissioners is the education of our citizens, and we thank him for that.” On behalf of the Vance County School Board, board member Gloria White presented Shearin with a rocking chair and a set of luggage. White said of Shearin: “He would go into his own pocket, not just look in the budget, to give something to a child.” Shearin thanked the speakers for their kind words and expressed his appreciation of everyone he has worked with. “I think we have made a lot of progress, but it always needs to be for the kids,” Shearin said. “Vance County Schools have great principals and teachers who are there for the kids constantly.” Ronald Gregory, assistant superintendent of Vance County Schools, became interim superintendent on May 1.

Mission Statement Norman Shearin offers closing remarks at a retirement banquet in his honor on April 26.
