Work First working in Vance County The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, Vance County Department of Social Services and Vance-Granville Community College are continuing a partnership with the Work First program to provide employability skills training to Work First eligible clients. Connie Ragland joined the staff of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce as Work First Coordinator in May 2011. She brings a combined total of fifteen years experience in assisting teenagers and young adults in preparing for the future. This experience comes from working with the Granville County School System as a College Preparation Coordinator and as a Career Transition Specialist for Kittrell Job Corps Center. In addition to this experience, Ragland has also worked for Franklin-GranvilleVance Smart Start. Connie is married and has one son. In her spare time, she and her husband operate Reclaiming

Our Youth Leadership Program (R.O.Y.) and New Horizons Training Group. Ragland says “my goal is to make a difference in someone’s life. ” The Work First program began in early 2007 and continues to provide services in Vance County which includes a three week preparation course in “STEPS to Self Sufficiency. ” During this course, individuals learn job seeking skills, interviewing skills and techniques, appropriate dress, resume preparation, etc. They also participate in intense job searching and are given firsthand job leads. During this time frame they are also given a WorkKeys assessment through Vance-Granville Community College’s Human Resource Development Department. The assessment determines an individual’s skill level in Reading, Writing and Math skills. They are awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold certifications which are recognized by the National Career Readiness Institute. An aver-

Connie Ragland age of fifteen participants attends these monthly courses. Upon finishing all requirements, individuals are awarded a certificate of completion. In addition to classroom participation, several businesses in the area have also agreed to take part in the program. As an incentive, employers who hire the Work First eligible clients will receive a 75 percent hourly wage reimbursement for the clients they hire. This program is called Job Boost. National Farm-City Week celebration coming Tuesday As part of National Farm-City Week, Vance County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the 2011 Farm-City Week Breakfast. County extension director for Rockingham County Brenda Sutton — “The Produce Lady” — will be the guest speaker. The event is set for Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church. Bringing together members of the agricultural and business communities, the event commemorates the mutually beneficial partnership between the two. The event will feature a program of speakers including Chamber President Bill Edwards who will represent the local business community. Also featured will be a full country breakfast catered by Ted Wheeler and utilizing a percentage of locally grown produce. Awards will also be given during the course of the event for the Farmer, Small Farmer, 4-H Volunteer and Community Supporter of the Year. The mission of the National Farm-City Council is to enhance the linkages

between farm families and urban residents, providing local organizations with educational programs and materials about the people who grow their food. In recent years, the major focus of the programs and materials has been on consumer and classroom education. Student activity sheets, teacher packets, placemats and bookmarks are just a few of the materials the Council has created to support its mission. In the past year, thousands of materials were used in classrooms, at Farm-City banquets, at civic club meetings and in other venues. Farm-City activities are grassroots in nature. Communities across the nation have Farm-City events ranging from banquets to tours to job exchanges. Farm-City groups work closely with Agriculture in the Classroom programs in educating students and teachers about agriculture. Registration deadline for the event is Friday. For information or to register, contact the Chamber at (252) 438-8414.

Express Employment Professionals celebrating a decade of local service Express Employment Professionals conducted a Business After Hours Oct. 18 to celebrate their 10th year of serving the local community. The event took place at their new location at 124 Main Street in Oxford . A true kickoff for the Fall season, the event was like a Fall Festival, complete with seasonal hors d’oeuvres, snacks, crisp apple cider and fun for all. The Express office opened its doors at 212 Granville Corners in Oxford Sept. 17, 2001. This was exactly one week after the infamous terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Sam and Pam Higdon were the original franchisees, and this was their second Express office, the first one serving Durham and Orange Counties. By October of that year, the company had 18 paid associates working with 5 clients and by the end of 2001, the Higdons had grown to 25 associates placed on assignments with five clients in the area. Over the next five years the Higdons averaged 80-100 associates working in the region. In August of 2006, the Higdons sold the Oxford office to Hal Muetzel, a former hospital executive from the Tampa Bay Area. Muetzel and his family relocated to the region for the opportunity to start

‘Member Spotlights’ offer opportunity to spread the word Now over a year old, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber’s “Member Spotlights” continues to be one of the most popular free Chamber benefits. This special section of the Business Outlook Tabloid and Chamber web-site allows member businesses to list their upcoming public sales, special events, special products and/or services for free. A link on the Chamber homepage takes all viewers to this special page. Criteria set for each listing is 50 words or less typed in a Word or text document using 10 pt. Verdana. The name of the company is listed first and then the complete description of what is being spotlighted. Entries are listed monthly. Any entry to be listed in “Member Spotlights” will have a deadline of the 25th of the month preceeding when the entry should appear. Entries are listed alphabetically on the page with the company name in bold and the description in normal type. All are uniform in appearance. Chamber Members who wish to have an entry listed should send their information as seen in the November Spotlights below to info@hendersonvance.org by the 25th of the month preceding the listing or call the Chamber at (252) 438-8414 with questions.

Sugar n Spice earns fivestar rating Sugar n Spice Preschool has recently received a five star ranking from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Child Development. The Division of Child Development (DCD) began issuing star rated licenses to all eligible child care centers and family child care homes in 1999. Since 2005, all programs earn their star rating based on the two components that give parents the best indication of quality: Staff Education and Program Standards. Program standard points are based on an evaluation of the daily environment of the child-care program. This includes: program environment, sufficient space for activities, variety of play materials, cleanliness and comfort of play area, number of staff per child and interactions between adults and children, children with other children and children with activities and materials. In order to receive a total of 5 stars, 13-15 out of a total possible 15 points must be earned. This is the highest star rating that can be earned for the two component license. To contact Sugar n Spice, call Latonya Carter at (252) 492-7335 or email lcarter03@yahoo.com.
