The wideout steadily improved as the 2012 season wore on, finishing with five touchdowns and close to 500 receiving yards.

“I’m expecting a great year out of Shawn,” said Young. “He’s doing things in practice that has all the coaches’ mouths dropping. We’ll just be amazed at the plays he’s making.”

Young also likes what he sees in athletic senior DeAndre Jefferson, a 6-foot-2 wideout who missed much of last season with an injury. He and Shawn Henderson are joined in the receiving corps by classmate Jeremiah Williams.

Bullock and junior Maurice Howard form the middle of the defensive line with Isaiah Leveille and Juwan Harris on either end.

Young said junior linebacker Sheldon Smith was the team’s defensive MVP last season. He’ll play on one side of senior Stanton Fields.

The other linebacker spot as well as a couple of secondary spots are up for grabs. Roberts lines up at free safety while Deon Smith also returns in the backfield.

Warren County Harder, better, faster, stronger

Warren County’s offensive backfield is loaded with talent, but the Eagles are young up front with only one returning starter. And that means everything in John Ward’s single-wing system.

“In my offense, a team offense, the offensive linemen are just as prevalent as the John Ward backs,” said Ward, entering his second season in Warrenton. “In a team offense, it’s not just the skill guys that count.”

Those skill guys, led by seniors Jaquan Jones, Chris Privett, Devonte Hargrove, and quarterback Kaelen Evans, will each play both ways as Warren County shoots for its first winning season since 1999.

The Eagles finished 4-7 in 2012, narrowly missing out on a 2-A state playoff bid.

“That is definitely something we talk about,” Ward said of returning to the playoffs. “The teacher in me just says, ‘Are we better today than we were yesterday?’”

Warren County is overall stronger, faster and more in tune with Ward’s offense. But that won’t guarantee wins in a Northern Carolina Conference that welcomes back the Eagles’ rival Southern Vance in addition to what is expected to be a strong South Granville team.

Those two teams join traditional league powers Bunn and Roanoke Rapids and Franklinton finished second in the conference last season behind the Wildcats.

“I think this conference is better than it was last year,” said Ward. “This conference doesn’t have to apologize to anyone.”

The lone returning offensive lineman is tackle Corey Green, a 6-foot-5, 270-pounder who Ward says has gotten stronger along with much of the team.

Warren County didn’t use a placekicker last season and the Eagles were still sorting out that aspect of special teams in the preseason.

Privett ran for 746 yards and six scores.

Jones and Evans will each see time at quarterback and wingback. Pete Johnson also plays some wing back and junior Dyami Wortham impressed last season as a junior varsity call-up. Each of those players also lines up in the defensive backfield.

Ward anticipates an improved passing game. Seniors Xavier Alexander and Jaylen Jones line up as receivers as does freshman Darius Southerland.

Dennis Waddell, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound tight end, could be a lethal weapon for the Eagles — if they can just get him the ball.

“I don’t mean good, I mean he has terrific hands,” said Ward. “And he can block now. A tight end can be extremely

valuable in our system, especially one who can block.”

Waddell’s backup is Anthony Oliver, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound senior. Oliver started at Warren County as a freshman before playing two seasons at Plano High School in Texas, where he was expected to be a valued contributor this season for the storied Texas University Interscholastic League 5-A program.

Oliver, who will play tackle or end, is expected to be one of the leaders of the Eagles’ defense along with Privett, Johnson, George Burnette, and Otis Bullock.

Burnette led the team in tackles last season as a sophomore, tallying 90 to go with three sacks.

Privett tallied 80 tackles from his linebacker position, where he is joined by Bullock.

“They’re athletic,” Ward said of his defense.

J.F. Webb is trying to get everything it can out of its tank of a tailback, Tobiah Lewis.

He’s the leader. Whether he likes it or not.

“We’re going to make him lead this team,” said first-year head coach Tony Midgette. “We feel like he’s going to be one of the best players on our team and I think he can be one of the best backs in this conference. We’re trying to make him understand that, make him believe that.”

Lewis, a 5-foot-10, 235-pound senior, finished with 874 rushing yards in 2012, adding three scores.

He leads a backfield that also features speedy Tony junior Midgette Desean Moss and Tevin Evans, a 5-foot-10, 215-pound sophomore.

“He’s a tough player physically,” Midgette said of Lewis. “Physically, he’s just going to overpower a lot of people. We’re just trying to get the most out of him.”

Midgette, a former Elizabeth City State linebacker, succeeded Brian Currin as head coach.

Midgette was Currin’s defensive coordinator the previous four seasons.

Midgette said the offensive line in front of his trio of backs is the biggest he’s seen at Webb, led by one of the smaller ones, Zach Watkins, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound center and 2012 all-conference selection.

The other returning offensive lineman is senior Cameron Blanchard.

Senior Beau Smith is a returning offensive starter.

But he’s never played quarterback. That’s what he’ll be asked to do this season as he replaces Corey Evans, a 2012 all-conference selection that transferred to Granville Central.

Smith, also a member of the Warrior baseball and basketball teams, moved to signal caller from receiver.

“I hate that we’re throwing him into the fire, but he’s the guy that we think is going to be the best fit,” said Midgette. “He’s catching on very quick to our system. We’re not asking him to throw it 60 yards down the field. We’re just asking him to make strong decisions with the ball.”

At 6-feet-2 and 235 pounds, sophomore tight end Deshawn Lewis could be Smith’s top target.

“The softest hands in Oxford,” said Midgette. “I think he catches just about anything. And he blocks well.”

Junior Deshay Hollifield did not play last season, but is expected to be another dependable option for Smith.

Midgette knows he can rely on Gearl Majors, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive tackle.

“He’s excited some college coaches already,” Midgette said of the junior.

Midgette added that his offensive line has a hard time doubling Majors in practice.

“And I think we have a pretty good offensive line,” said the Webb coach.

Nykwanza is a very fast, speedy guy. He’s about 5-11, 180 pounds. Hopefully we’re not going to get a lot of touchdowns thrown on us because of those two guys.”

Midgette likes what he sees from returning kicker William Gillespie.

And Henderson and junior Deonte Hart will get time fielding kicks.

Webb looks to return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2010. The Warriors have six combined wins in the previous two seasons.

“We know we’re in good shape,” said Midgette.

“We’ve got some good kids, some amazing talent. Our thing is we just want to improve every day.”

Darden expects a Webb team of about 10 with three or four back from last season including seniors Lina Lue and Melissa Phelps.

Lue was the top seed last season.

“They’re good players,” said Darden. “They’re consistent. They get the ball over the net.”

Darden has also been impressed with some of his newcomers including freshman Anna Freuler.

Holder eyeing run at state title

Kayla Holder is No. 1 in her class.

Her Kerr-Vance cross country coach wants her to be No. 1 in the state.

Holder was 11th in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association 2-A state meet last season as a freshman. Her time of 21:17.03 would have been good enough for second place in the 1-A ranks, where she’ll compete this season.

“Kayla probably puts in at least 40 miles a week,” said KVA head coach Courtney Nutter. “And she’s been training every day all summer. If she’s not running, she’s doing Zumba or Pilates or she’s lifting weights.

Running is her thing and this is what she wants to do.

And she’s going to do it.”

Holder finished 18th in the state as an eighth-grader.

She and junior Addison Mabry have earned all-conference honors each of the previous two seasons.

Nutter’s primary goal for the team is to recruit more runners. A total of five is needed for a team score.

Jacob Goswick and A.J. Holloway are returning for the boys and Audrey Thompson is a seventh-grade newcomer.

KVA hosts the Eastern Plains Independent Conference Championship Oct. 18, a week before the state meet. The Spartans open Aug. 28 against Oakwood, Franklin Academy and Southern Vance.

The Raiders don’t have any seniors and junior Jonathan Carlock and sophomore Damonte Blash are the only returners.

Southern leaves the tough 3-A Carolina Conference for the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference, which should provide more stiff competition. Durham School of the Arts and N.C. School of Science and Math join Roanoke Rapids as the likely teams to beat.

Headed home with high hopes Cross country: Kerr-Vance

Northern and Southern Vance each have new volleyball coaches for the second consecutive season.

Christa Mosly succeeds Meredith Thompson at Northern while former Viking coach April Abbott replaces Shannon Allen and returns to her alma mater.

Abbott won a state championship with the Raiders in 2003 before playing at UNC-Pembroke.

“It’s nice to be here,” said Abbott. “It’s just odd to go from one side to the other and not feel some type of uneasiness. I didn’t know how the girls would accept it, but I haven’t had one problem.”

Abbott was the head coach at Northern from 2010-2011 and coached some of her new Raider players in middle school and Junior Olympics.

“I have an idea of what they’re about,” said Abbott. “They know what I’m about. I think that has helped with the preseason stuff a lot.”

Abbott said the 3-A Carolina Conference, which was mostly controlled by Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill and Orange, should prepare the team for the move to the 2-A Northern Carolina Conference.

South Granville, the 2012 2-A state runner-up, is the reigning champion.

The Raiders aren’t short on talent. They’re led by athletic outside hitter Kiyanna Kearney, who had 145 kills last season.

“Her work ethic is amazing,” said Abbott.

“She’s going to keep going. She’s going to do what you ask her to do and not give you any lip about it.”

Megan Hight, Deja Hicks, Allyson Dunn, Rashyda Burwell, and Mikayla Sellers join Kearney in the senior class.

Sophomore Brittany West won’t leave the floor from her outside hitter position often.

Hight, a four-year veteran, gives the team a dominant presence in the middle. She may be joined there by Sellers.

Dunn and Hicks will play some back row and Bryanna Simmons is a setter.

The Southern-Northern conference rivalry is no more this season due to realignment. But the series continues with the Raiders hosting the Vikings Aug. 22 and the return trip scheduled for Aug. 30.

Mosly, a Virginia Beach, Va. native, played volleyball at St. Paul’s College and has been teaching at Northern for three years.

“I think they play well,” Mosly said of the Vikings.

“I think they just need to improve a little bit in certain areas and I know that I can get them there.”

Emily Hilliard was Northern’s lone first team all-conference selection last season after racking up 152 kills and 86 digs.

“She understands the game, which is what I like about Emily,” said Mosly.

“Anywhere that I put here, it doesn’t matter. I tell her to set, she can set. I want her to swing, she can swing. Anywhere I place here, she’s going to do great.”

Hilliard, McKenzie Gay, Elizabeth Gay, and Jesse Edwards are the seniors.

Edwards leads Northern at the net.

“Jesse is really, really important,” said Mosly. “I need that height at the net.

Even the girls that aren’t tall, they can jump. But having that big body there is always good.”

Northern lost Southern as a league rival, but J.F. Webb hasn’t moved anywhere.

Freshman Harper Pruitt is stealing the show at setter and hitter.

“She was all-world down there,” Crews said of Pruitt in middle school. “She has probably five of the best skills in volleyball. She can set. She can jump-serve.

She can hit. She can pass.

She can dig.”

Crews said this group can be successful, in part, because of young players like Pruitt and Ashley Owen that can go back and forth between varsity and junior varsity.

“We have to get a little bit smarter,” said Crews.

“No question about that.

But if we can get that, skill-wise, we can be pretty good.”

Warren County lost all but three of its players from last season.

Kelsie Clary, Kassie Clary and Taylor Abel, are each returning senior setters.

“We’re kind of small this year,” said Warren County coach Shannon Jones.

“But we have a lot of heart.

We play hard. We’re not going to be as talented as before. But we’ll see what happens.”

Cutts and classmate Rebecca Ross are team captains and Jessica Moss rounds out the senior class. Each plays at outside hitter.

Kassidy Dickerson is back as a setter, Sophia Naradzay is a sophomore middle and junior Hannah Faulkner moved from the middle to outside hitter.

“I see strong things for Kassidy Dickerson too,” said KVA head coach Randi McMillen. “Even though she’s a freshman, she’s been playing for me for varsity since she was in seventh grade. I’m wanting her to be a setter and a hitter this year.”

McMillen added that she expects another tough Eastern Plains Independent Conference led by St. David’s and Cary Christian.

Trudy Stell is in her first season at Victory Christian, which claimed a regular season and conference tournament championship in 2012.

The Eagles have 10 players back, but no seniors.

Sophomore setter Allison Stell is the offensive and defensive leader.

“She’s very strong,” said Trudy Stell. “She’s an athletic individual. They get the ball past her, they’ll be doing good.”

Sophomore Tayler Thompson is back at setter and is one of the team’s top servers.
