Do-it-yourself holiday gifts cost less, but they mean so much more By Anne Wallace Allen For The Associated Press
If ever there has been a year to give a homemade holiday gift, this is it. The economy’s in the dumps and budgets are tight. Gift-givers have to be more creative than ever if they want to delight their friends and family with something unusual. Meanwhile, business is booming in the world of homemade crafts. Not only has scrapbooking launched an industry of its own, but the notion of do-it-yourself has produced thousands of new products, services, classes, and ideas that now jostle for space on the Web and in stores. With all these choices, the question remains: What to give? Here are some ideas: • Aprons are big this
year, according to Kathy Rogers of Oak Park, Calif. These kitchen cover-ups are useful and they’re easy to sew, even for novices. “People are having fun with it; I’ve seen a lot of aprons with retro patterns,” said Rogers, a fiber artist and teacher who is president of the California Art Education Association. “That seriously seems to be a very hot item.” Can’t sew at all? Order a white cotton twill apron from the Dharma Trading Company, http:// www.dharmatrading.com/. They start at around $7 and can be dressed up with tie-dye, buttons, decals, fabric paint and just about anything else. • Try a wreath. Jenny Bosben, a Madison, Wis., art teacher, estimates she spends about $3 per wreath for a metal frame and some
craft wire. Then she heads into her backyard to chop off a few pieces of an evergreen shrub. If you don’t have access to evergreens, boughs are available to buy at Christmas time. Just wrap the boughs securely onto the frame with the wire, overlapping so the stems don’t show. “You can add whatever you want: holly berries, dried flowers from the backyard,” said Bosben. “It’s something people really enjoy because it’s real and it smells good.” • If you’re making gifts with children, try baked goods, said Laurie Nagus, who runs playgroups at the Madison Waldorf School in Madison, Wis. Nagus likes to give homemade fudge as a gift. She also makes shortbread every year for neighbors and friends. “We give it with a candle and a
tiny bottle of wine,” she said. • Bosben also makes ornaments from a salt clay recipe that her mother used. Baked hard, the ornaments can be painted and decorated. Salt clay renders the ornaments both rock-hard and unappetizing to the family dog. “The ones my mom made, they lasted forever,” Bosben said. Bosben’s holiday ornament recipe: 1 cup flour 3/4 cup salt 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup cooking oil Mix flour, salt and oil with wooden spoon. Add water gradually. Shape, add hook for hanging from tree, and then bake pieces at 300 degrees for 1 to 2 hours, until hard. Paint and decorate.

As holiday gift lists shrink, who will make the cut? By LISA A. FLAM Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — Gift givers are getting ready to cut. Against the backdrop of record high unemployment and other financial struggles, people are taking out their holiday gifts lists and finding themselves having to cross off friends, relatives and coworkers this year. “Like the rest of the world, this economy has me cutting almost everyone off the gift list,” said Trish Bonsall, who lost her job as a sales manager for a new home builder in June. For Bonsall, 51, of Charlotte, that means losing all but about six people — her four sons and their significant others — from her list of 35. “Christmas is my favorite season. I like to buy presents,” she said. “It hurts.” While it may be a relief not to have to buy for a family friend or your book club, breaking up with a gift giver can be hard to do. To avoid hurt feelings and awkward situations, experts advise, be kind and tell the truth. “Be honest, and say, ‘Times are tight this year and I’m having to cut back. Do you mind if we don’t do gifts?’ ” said Peggy Post, director of the Emily Post Institute. And don’t wait too long. “Do it early” so your friend doesn’t buy you a present before you break the news, Post said. But in place of the latest best-seller or pair of gloves,
come up with an alternative, like a holiday lunch. “Don’t forget there’s a lot of gifts that are free — your attention, your time, maybe your talent,” says gift expert and author Robyn Spizman. That’s just what Bonsall is doing. In September, she emailed two sets of friends and asked that they skip the gifts. One group of five women she has known since childhood in Philadelphia is saving up to attend her son’s wedding this summer, while another five, who like her live in Charlotte, will meet for dinner. “Buying gifts for five gal pals would run me $100 (or more) ... but going dutch treat for dinner, I can enjoy a night with the girls and only spend
$20,” said Bonsall, who’s got a coupon for the restaurant. “Everybody was relieved that I took the initiative and said it’s OK not to buy gifts this year,” said Bonsall. And it’s a financial fix for her as well. Of the $200 savings, she said, “It’s huge. It’s an electric bill and a gas bill.” She and her husband, who does not work, also have decided not to buy gifts for each other, but to go on a date instead. “He is thrilled not to have to go shopping,” she said.
Whom to cut When it comes to friends, Spizman suggests cutting people you don’t see any more. Instead, send a card with an
offer to get together. If you live nearby, invite the person over for dinner. “If you’re broke, say, ‘Let’s have a drink together or a cup of coffee,’ ” Post said. When it comes to family gifts, you can skip grown-up gifts and buy only for children, or draw names for the adults, so each person buys and receives one gift. The same can be done for children, by drawing names for, say, all the cousins. When it comes to thanking people, a gift isn’t always necessary. “If you give your business to someone, you can shake their hand and thank them,” Spizman said. “You give them your business — that’s a gift.”

Against the backdrop of record high unemployment and other financial struggles, people are taking out their holiday gifts lists and finding themselves having to cross off friends, relatives and co-workers this year.
Gift alternatives There are still many ways of marking the holiday without a trinket wrapped up with a bow. “You can cut back without cutting the holiday spirit,” Spizman says. • Part with a possession: “Maybe this is the year you pass something down that was meaningful to you — a baseball, a comic book,” Spizman says. Or she suggests giving four or five books to help someone start a library or a piece of jewelry. • Lend a hand: “Long after the fruit cakes are forgotten, people remember true help,” Spizman said. “They remember when you repotted the plants at their front door when they no longer have the energy, or the soup you brought, because you made that by hand.” Another way of helping, especially considering the unemployment rate, is to refer somebody for a job. “You might not have the money, but you might have a connection,” Spizman said. Or you can offer to babysit or run errands. • Share a tip: If you’re getting together with a group, everybody can bring a dish along with a copy of the recipe for each person. Or if you’re gathering for a girlfriends’ dinner like Bonsall, add a theme by asking guests to bring their favorite beauty tip, says Spizman. • Pick up the phone: “Call someone and say, ‘I’m
thinking of you’ and ‘You mean the world to me.’ That is beautiful,” Spizman says. Or stop by to spread some good cheer. • Give by giving back: Tell your circle that you’re donating money (it doesn’t have to be a lot) to a charity or working in a soup kitchen in their honor, Post says. Or do a combination. In Beth Cleveland’s family, her aunt asked that instead of buying all 25 people a gift, each person bring one $25 gift with an animal theme. They will play a White Elephant exchange game. “I think everyone had a tough year and it’s just going to be about spending time with family,” said Cleveland, of Charleston, S.C. “We will still have the experience of opening gifts, but it will be more of a group activity rather than a free-for-all.” Her aunt also let the family know they would draw the name of a charity out of a hat and donate any voluntary contributions. “This year it doesn’t have to be all about the gifts,” said Cleveland, 27, the founder of a public relations firm. And though Bonsall will miss picking out presents, she too said she feels this celebration will be more meaningful. “I’m actually looking forward to putting the real meaning of Christmas back and taking away the gift part and getting back to spending time with family friends and enjoying each other,” she said.

The band itself was named national runner-up and took home many honors while competing against bands twice its size in the AA class. “We are class A by the rules, but any group can opt to go to a higher class,” said Band Director Taylor Whitehead. “I felt we were good enough to go up to a higher class.” The Dynamic Marching Machine went into this year’s nationals trying to make up for the disappointment of 2008, when the band came in fourth place, and the “Steel Stix” brought home second place. “Last year, we went and we worked very hard, but we came up short,” Whitehead said. The band came away upset, but with the drive to work even harder this year. “Our focus from day one (this year) was to get that group ready not just to compete at the national level (but to win),” Whitehead said. For this year’s edition of the Dynamic Marching Machine, the new season began July 26 with band camp. This fall, they have competed in three events in Virginia, one in Maryland, and four in North Carolina. In the month leading up to nationals, the band practiced every day, including several hours on Sunday. “Be-
cause the drumline are members of the band, they only had seven days to come up with a routine (for the national championship),” Whitehead said. “Parents have bent over backward to support our rigorous practice schedule.” That hard work certainly paid off as many parents, along with high school administrators, accompanied the band to Atlanta to cheer them on. Many supporters drove to the competition as well. “Steel Stix” won the national championship against top drumlines from North Carolina, Michigan, Virginia and Texas with a score of 287 out of 300. In addition to being named national runner-up, the band received the following awards: first place, drum major (for the fifth time: 2004, 2006-2009); first place, percussion, for the fifth consecutive time, for a total of eight national titles (three indoor and five on the field); first place, marching, for the second time (2006, 2009); first place, flags, for the first time; and second place, general effect. The Dynamic Marching Machine includes the following members: drum major — Khyre Sledge; dancers — Alicia Steverson, Vanity Newell, Ashleigh Kearney, Stephanie Wilkins, Lashonda Williams and Jasmine Alston; flags — Ebony Hamilton, Seana Faultz, Robin Alston, Shamari Downey, Precious Blackwell, Asia Seward and Michelle Hinton; flutes — Coslyn Boyd, Jasmine Burwell, Joquawn Crews and
Members of Warren County High School’s national champion “Steel Stix” drumline are (first row, left to right) Jalen Dixon, Sydnei Bullock and Nouri Bullock; (second row) Bryant Bullock, Carlos Carter, Ramon Bullock and Marcus Joyner; (third row) Donald Hunt, Quinton Terry, Khrye Sledge, Giles Burnette and Jerron Jones. Additional staff members include Phillip Burgess, announcer; Richard Alston, operations staff; Derek Alston, manager; and Ashley Goode, auxiliary coach. Whitehead is proud that the Dynamic Marching Machine has participation from all three of Warren County’s high schools. “Years ago, it was just Warren County High School students,” he said. “(This year) I had participants from four different schools: Warren County High School, Warren New
Tech High School, Warren Early College High School and Warren County Middle School. There has been cooperation between the schools and the administrators.” The Dynamic Marching Machine features 18 seniors, including Marcus Joyner, who has been to all six nationals in which the band competed, something Whitehead called “finishing pretty strong.” “Marcus, who is the section leader of the percussion section, has been playing in the WCHS band since he was in the fifth grade, making him the longest running band student in the history of WCHS and the first to ever participate at the elementary level,” Whitehead said. Joyner, who may be one of the best high school drummers in the country, is being
recruited by a number of colleges and universities. Whitehead also expressed appreciation for the support of WCHS administrators this year. “I would like to thank all three administrators at the high school for their support of the band program,” he said. While the National Championship marks the end of 2009 competitions, the band will have to prepare for a number of upcoming events, including Christmas parades and the WCHS Christmas concert. In the spring, indoor drumline competitions will begin, and the group will have something extraspecial to work toward as well. The “Steel Stix” have been invited to audition for the television show, “America’s Got Talent,” in March.

several states after visiting her two brothers, a sister and me. My daughter had a CB in her car and while she was driving, was talking on and off with different truckers on the road. A car full of young men began to harass her by tailgating, passing her dangerously close, then pulling sharply in front of her and slowing down. Each time she’d manage to pass them, the harassment would begin again. She related her problem over the CB to a trucker. As if by magic, three trucks appeared! One got behind her, and another maneuvered in front — while a third sort of “nudged” the offending car out of her way, then positioned his rig alongside my daughter’s car. Those truckers talked to her the whole time and continued in formation until the men who’d been hassling her gave up and took off. The truckers continued to maintain contact with my daughter until she reached her exit, and I am deeply grateful to them. Because I never got to thank them personally, I hope they’ll read this in your column. Abby, may God continue to guide you as you strive to assist others, and watch over you always. — MOM MC C. IN OHIO DEAR MOM MC C.: Thank you for the blessing, and for the testimonial that acts of chivalry still occur on our highways. DEAR ABBY: For the first time in eight years, my husband and I will be staying in a hotel when we visit his parents for Christmas. While I love his family, their home is small, and we are relegated to a trundle bed and must share the sole bathroom with the entire family. It’s impossible for us to be comfortable with so many people in such close quarters. We assumed that sleeping in a nearby hotel and visiting during the days and evenings would be a fair compromise. We were shocked at their reaction when we discussed our plans with the family. They are very hurt about our decision and Dear extremely Abby offended. They are Universal Press begging us Syndicate to reconsider and stay in their home. Are our actions selfish and cold-hearted? We mean no harm, and are so surprised at the strong reaction that we’re starting to question our judgment. Should we travel and stay in the hotel, or just scrap the trip altogether? — STAYING HOME NEXT YEAR DEAR STAYING HOME: No, you, your husband and his parents should discuss this more fully. You didn’t mention how many family members will be spending the holidays in that small house. While I sympathize with family traditions, as children grow into adulthood certain realities come into play. If you prefer to sleep in a hotel and have a private bathroom and the ability to have a private conversation if you wish, I don’t think it’s too much to ask. But I’d hate to see you cancel a family visit because of the pressure that is being exerted. That’s in no one’s best interests.

Actors Steve Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang, from left, pose at a photo-call to promote their new movie ‘Avatar’ in Berlin, Germany.
Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ has its premiere in London, England LONDON (AP) — James Cameron’s sci-fi extravaganza “Avatar” premiered in London last week, and the movie industry is watching intently to see whether it will match the success of the director’s blockbuster “Titanic.” Stars Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana were expected to join the crowds in London’s Leicester Square before last Thursday’s gala screening. The 3-D epic about humans taking extraterrestrial form as they explore a distant world is reportedly one of the most expensive movies ever made, with a price tag well in excess of the $200 million spent to make “Titanic.” It uses cutting-edge digital technology to create dizzying special effects. Cameron said the movie, which is set in the future on an alien planet being pillaged by humans for natural resources, deals with how indigenous people are treated by newcomers. “It’s a way of connecting
a thread through history. I take that thread further back to the 16th and 17th centuries and to how the Europeans pretty much took over South and Central America and displaced and marginalized the indigenous peoples there,” he said. “There’s just this long, wonderful history of the human race written in blood going back as far as we can remember, where we have this tendency to just take what we want without asking,” he said. Cameron conceived the story for “Avatar” in 1995 then waited a decade for technology to catch up so he could film it. The film mixes live action and computer animation to create an eye-poppingly vivid alien world. The industry is watching closely to see how audiences respond to Cameron’s first narrative film since 1997’s “Titanic,” which won 11 Academy Awards and has taken $1.8 billion worldwide at the box office. “Avatar” opens around the world this week.
Celebrity Bits Man charged with theft of ’Catwoman’ jewelry LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors say they have charged a man suspected of stealing $25,000 in jewelry from Julie Newmar. The actress who portrayed the first Catwoman on the “Batman” TV series in the 1960s spotted the pilfered jewelry for sale on eBay and alerted authorities. That led Los Angeles prosecutors to charge 48-year-old Robert Ouriel with grand theft last Wednesday. He was due in court for arraignment Thursday. Efforts to reach Ouriel for comment were unsuccessful. He was arrested last month and remains free on $50,000 bail. Prosecutors say he was an acquaintance of Newmar’s and allegedly sent the items to an Illinois pawn shop that listed them for sale online.
Chris Cuomo leaving ABC morning show for ‘20/20’ spot NEW YORK (AP) — ABC says Chris Cuomo is leaving “Good Morning America” to co-host the newsmagazine “20/20.” The move paves the way for the announcement — expected imminently — that George Stephanopoulos will join the morning show. Cuomo has been the newsreader on “Good
Morning America.” His last day was Friday, the same day as co-host Diane Sawyer, who is replacing the retiring Charles Gibson on “World News.” Cuomo had been considered the main competition to Stephanopoulos for Sawyer’s old job. His move to the evening will pair him with co-host Elizabeth Vargas. ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co.
Billy Joel: daughter had ‘devastating heartbreak’ NEW YORK (AP) — Pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley say their daughter is trying to recover from her “dangerous actions” of last weekend, when New York City police received an emergency call about Alexa Ray Joel. In a statement released this past Wednesday, Joel and Brinkley say their daughter’s actions came “while suffering a devastating heartbreak.” The statement didn’t specify what her actions were. Joel and Brinkley also say a report published this past Tuesday in the New York Post was “false.” The Post reported the 23-yearold attempted suicide after a fight with her mother during a family vacation. A spokeswoman for the Post didn’t immediately comment. A publicist for Alexa Ray Joel said this past week she was feeling better and was with family.
