Henderson Wellness Center declared 2009 recipient of Small Business of the Year award The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce, along with the Franklin, Granville and Warren County chambers and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center, sponsored the 2010 Small Business Luncheon in a collaborative effort again this year. The event was hosted by the HendersonVance County Chamber and was held at the Henderson Country Club on Thursday. Recipient of the 2009 Small Business of the Year for Vance County was Henderson Wellness Center. The business recently expanded to include an urgent care center. Henderson Wellness Center offers chiropractic services and acupuncture; treatment of back and neck pain; sports injuries; and the new urgent care
services. Urgent care services offer persons the opportunity to be seen on the same day without an appointment. The business is owned and operated by Dr. Brandon Taylor and is located at 414 Dabney Dr. To contact the office, call (252) 430-8000 or go to their website at www.taylorchiropractic.com. This was the ninth consecutive year that the Chamber has presented the award, which recognizes a member business with 50 employees or less. An anonymous committee is charged with the task of deciding the winner from among those businesses that are nominated. Franklin, Granville and Warren counties also awarded Small Business of the Year honors for their counties.
Former recipients of the Vance County award include Franklin Brothers Nursery & Greenhouses Inc., Ballet Arts, Interiors, Fogg’s Exxon, Vance Furniture, Gray’s Gourmet, The Peanut Roaster and Raemac Transportation. The luncheon featured keynote speaker Joyce Siler, director of client services with the Women’s Business Center of North Carolina, who conducted a brief seminar entitled “Common Mistakes Small Business Owners Make.” The Women’s Business Center of North Carolina is a partnership program between the Institute of Minority Economic Development and the U. S. Small Business Administration. The event concluded with the presentation of the 2009 Vance County Small Business of the Year.

12th annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament scheduled for June 2 Sponsorships are available for the 12th annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament. This year’s Presenting Sponsor is BB&T. The Gold Sponsor is Maria Parham Medical Center. The event will take place at Kerr Lake Country Club on June 2 (rain date: June 3). All Chamber members are invited to participate in this Captain’s Choice (Superball) tournament. One of the Chamber’s most popular fundraisers, this event is a great way to network with other Chamber member businesses. After lunch at noon, the tournament will begin with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded for the top four teams, with other prizes being awarded for the longest drive, hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest putt. A dinner and awards ceremony will take place immediately following the tournament. Sponsoring teams and individual registrations are accepted on a first-come, firstserved basis. Patron status includes sponsorship of an individual award such as longest drive, closest to the pin or longest putt. Administrative professionals honored by Chamber at luncheon The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosted a special luncheon honoring administrative assistants and other professional support staff on April 21 at the Henderson Country Club. The speaker for this year’s event was John Formica of John Formica Enterprises, who presented “How Do You Deal with Work When All of Your Sick Days are Used?” Formica Enterprises is a training and coaching firm specializing in leadership development, personal and employee performance, improved communication, team relationships, business and organization growth and customer service. Prior to starting his own training and coaching firm, Formica held numerous top management positions with service industry leaders including Walt Disney World Resorts, Hyatt Hotels, Hilton Ho-
tels and Sunrise Senior Living Inc. During his 10 years at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., Formica managed the top luxury resort properties and has since spoken to companies and business professionals all over the world. He holds a bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University. In his presentation, Formica used humor and energy to motivate employers and employees alike to be the best they can be and to do their best at every task. The event was well attended with approximately 140 present. Teacher Executive Institute holds graduation
On March 23, a graduation celebration was held for the 2009-2010 session of the Teacher Executive Institute (TEI). The annual program, now in its 16th year, concluded with a dinner and ceremony at Middleburg Steak House. Rep. Michael Wray, who represents Vance County in the N.C. General Assembly, was the featured speaker for the evening. He praised all of the program participants for their leadership in the educational field. He also encouraged them to continue to be leaders in their important work with students each day in the classroom. Wray added that he admires the educators for their efforts in their profession and for seeking to improve by participating in a program like the Teacher Executive Institute. Each graduate was presented a framed certificate by George Fowler, executive director of the Vance County Public School Foundation, and Lisa Bolton of Walmart Distribution Center in Henderson, which sponsored the graduation and dinner. The Teacher Executive Institute provides Vance County classroom teachers, counselors and media specialists with opportunities to tour local businesses, learn about the facilities and take part in informational seminars to broaden their skills base. The results strengthen the partnership between the professionals in education and the business community. The program offers educators a chance to network and share ideas with one another and also talk with business leaders about how they can work together to prepare students for the future work force. The institute is funded by the Vance County Public School Foundation, a nonprofit organization funded by private contributions, foundation grants and local business

EXPO 2010 set for Oct. 12

Ambassadors’ Club needs new members to represent Chamber On March 25, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber held its quarterly Ambassadors’ Club meeting at the Golden Corral at 8:30 a.m. Golden Corral is one of the Chamber’s newest members. “We really appreciate Manager Will Johnson opening up just for us. It is great to have a Chamber member that has breakfast meeting space as well,” said Rachel Hedrick, director of Membership Services. Approximately 17 attendees were treated to a buffet that included pancakes, French toast, eggs, grits and other breakfast fare. Ambassadors used this time to sign up to volunteer at Meet Me in the Street events and the
upcoming Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament. They also discussed keeping in touch with new members to aid them in making the most of their Chamber investment. The Ambassador Club is composed of volunteers from Chamber member businesses. These volunteers attend ribbon-cuttings, maintain contact with Chamber members, and volunteer at special Chamber events. The employee and the business they represent get exposure in the community and in Chamber publications. It’s time to mark your calendars for the 2010 Business EXPO! This year’s event will be held on Oct. 12 in the Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) Civic Center. Sponsorships are available for the event. The event, now in its 20th year, offers businesses an excellent opportunity to showcase their products and services as well as meet the hundreds of potential customers who pass through the aisles over the course of the event. There are approximately 80 booths available inside the Civic Center. Limited spaces in the outside lobby as well as outside in front of the building can also be reserved. Sponsorship are available at two levels. Gold Premier sponsorships are $1,000 and will allow interested businesses to become EXPO co-sponsors with the VGCC Small Business Center and participating Chambers. Also included at this level is exposure in
EXPO publicity, exhibit space and lunch. Silver Premier sponsorships are available for $500 and include publicity, exhibit space and lunch. To celebrate the event’s 20th year, registration amounts have been reduced to $185 for Chamber members and $300 for non-Chamber members. Electric hook-ups are available for an additional $10. EXPO 2010 is being coordinated by the Henderson-Vance County Chamber, the Franklin County Chamber, the Granville County Chamber and the Warren County Chamber along with the VGCC Small Business Center. The public exhibit will take place from 2-7 p.m. Door prizes will be given away during the event. N.C. ProsperityProject (NCP2) provides tools to state businesses
With 19 announced retirements already (and nearly 20 other legislative races expected to be hotly contested in November), there will definitely be changes in who serves in the N.C. General Assembly next year. What’s not yet certain is what organizations will be most engaged during the upcoming elections when new leaders are selected. Make no mistake about it — the organizations that do the best job of being informed, involved and organized during the 2010 elections will play a stronger hand in shaping North Carolina’s future! North Carolina needs elected representatives who understand what it takes for businesses to be competitive and successful to spur economic recovery and keep and create jobs. Unfortunately, many of the legislators who are retiring from the state legislature were knowledgeable about business issues — about what employers need and what the state needs to be globally competitive to attract and retain the best jobs. That is why we must be informed about and involved in the 2010 elections — and why our members and their employees must be as well. Lighting technology update provided money saving options for small businesses The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosted an informative luncheon entitled “Lighting Technology Update for Small Business� at the Henderson Country Club on April 8. Progress Energy lighting experts discussed energy-saving techniques, lighting technology, and rebates that are available to small business. In these tough economic times, the information presented in this session proved very beneficial to the attending companies and offered opportunities to improve their bottom line. The event was free to Chamber members and was underwritten by Progress Energy and Parkview Plaza.

Crawford appointed to small business committee Rep. Jim Crawford has been appointed to the House Select Committee on Small Business. The House Select Committee on Small Business is responsible for studying issues related to small business including access to credit; technical assistance and support needs of small businesses; the impact of existing economic development efforts on small business development, and tax credits for small businesses to spur job creation. “I am delighted that the Democrats are paying special attention to small businesses, and I look forward to working with the committee to come up with some ideas to preserve and promote small business interests in the state of North Carolina,� said Crawford. Crawford is a small business owner
currently serving his 13th term in the House of Representatives. He is chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations and vice chairman of House Transportation. Several sessions earlier, Crawford organized the House Small Business Caucus to monitor relevant legislation and continues to chair that caucus.

In the fall of 2009, Central Baptist Church began a new outreach program to touch the lives of the people in the community in a very real and practical way. “Central Cares” is a quarterly event where a number of the church members go out into the community on a Saturday with the purpose of serving the people of Henderson and giving a message of hope through sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. On October 24, 2009, members of Central Baptist showed their care for the community in three distinct ways. Approximately 185 plates of food were served at three distribution points: Springwood Apartments, Fire Station No. 1 and a group of senior apartments located on Coble Boulevard. Church members shared their faith, providing spiritual counseling and Christian resources at these locations. Secondly, landscaping improvements were made to the playground and flagpole areas at E.M. Rollins Elementary School. Lastly, Central Baptist members partnered with Rebuilding Hope Ministries to make needed repairs to a lady’s home in Henderson. Central Baptist Church is excited to continue this ministry and see it grow in 2010. “It is our prayer that God would continue to direct our hearts and hands to serve him where he is working. We find joy in meeting physical needs, but shame on us if we are not pointing each other

Equipping Faith Church The Bridge Program is being sponsored by The Global Training Center at Equipping Faith Church located at 549 South William St. in Henderson in collaboration with the Henderson Vance Weed and Seed Program. The program was designed by Pastor Orlando R. Terry to reinforce the knowledge and skills needed to be active in a technical world. The program offers assistance to youth in the community with developing various computer skills to prepare them for a fast-paced world of technology. The program will work to reinforce technology skills while offering a safe, challenging learning environment. The Bridge Program also offers adults in the community job training and basic computer training, including Microsoft Word, Excel and keyboard training. This year, the Backpack Buddies project has been supported by donations from church members that are above their usual contributions. The church would like to expand the number of children helped and foresees the need for outside contributions. They are hoping for business and corporate support. Based on this year’s figures, funds is the amount of $25 per month or $225 per year are needed for each child. Also, knowing the need to feed more hungry children in Vance County, First Baptist would like to see other churches and organizations get involved with other schools in this worthwhile mission. Members of the Mission Committee at First Baptist would be willing to share their experiences and expertise in helping begin this project at other churches/ organizations. Other mission projects at First Baptist Church include the At Risk Kids (ARK) Program. This is a once-a-week after-school tutoring session held at the church for 15-20 E.M. Rollins Elementary School children who are selected by counselors. In addition, the church, in conjunction with Shiloh Baptist and Greater Little Zion Holy Church, hosts a once-a-year mission project called the “Back to School” block party. The event which is held in August, where over a thousand backpacks filled with school supplies are handed out. “Celebration of the day includes lots of free food and games. It is usually hot and always a great day,” says Edwards.

The Church of the Holy Innocents has maintained for many years a commitment to outreach as an expression of its ministry. There is a line item for outreach in the church’s annual budget that is administered by a committee which reviews needs and requests from charities and makes recommendations to the vestry for final approval. The church vestry has voted to increase the First United Methodist Church outreach budget by 10 percent annually. The church makes grants each year on the local, First United Methodist Church has adopted state, national and international level. Annual both Dabney Elementary and Pinkston Street grants are made to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund for Episcopal Outreach; Lifeline Elementary schools in the Vance County Ministries; Penick Village; St. Augustine’s Colschool system. The Cooper House, a center for rehabilitation of women who have suffered from substance abuse, began as the area’s first battered women’s shelter, whose founding director was a member of Holy Innocents. The church’s Parish House is large enough for public meetings and gatherings, and is frequently used by various groups within the community including Alcoholics Anonymous and the Boy Scouts. The lot at the corner of Walnut and Breckenridge streets (Jackson Park) is leased to the city each year for a nominal sum and is used as a playground and recreational area by neighborhood children and youth. In addition to its outreach budget, Holy Innocents is blessed with several endowment funds directed to outreach. These include The Endowment Fund for outreach, the Genevieve Cooper Smith Fund and the Wolfe Scholarship Fund. New projects for outreach will also include the local cooperative effort of several local churches to provide a weekend soup kitchen as well as assistance with the men’s shelter.
