‘Linemen lead the way’ for promising Raiders Southern Vance returns 22 seniors, 16 starters

How do you replace a 1,000yard rusher?

With another one, of course.

Southern Vance lost its star running back Nunu Henderson to graduation, but Bryan Person is more than capable and more than ready to replace him.

Both players rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2010.

Henderson was the go-to Raider back last year, but was forced to battle through injuries, leaving Person to carry the offense. “What he got more than anything last year, more than game experience, was game confidence and realized that when he does what he’s supposed to do, he’s a great player,� said Southern coach Mark Perry.

Person, now a senior, was named the Carolina 3A Conference Preseason Player of the Year. “Bryan is going to have to tote most of the load this year and I think he’s ready to do it,� said Perry.

And Person isn’t the only weapon in the Raider backfield.

There’s the bruiser, Miller Allen, playing a fullback role with heavy blocking responsibilities, but also a receiving threat.

Southern’s third-string back, Chris Henderson, got plenty of carries last year and looked impressive in the Pigskin Jamboree, shouldering most of the load with Person recovering from a twisted ankle.

How do you replace a threestar starting safety that was good enough to earn a scholarship to play in the ACC? You don’t. But Southern still has a talented cast of characters in the secondary to fill in, maybe sometimes by committee, for N.C. State’s Hakim Jones.

Terrell Hope will sport Jones’ old No. 5 jersey and play his same safety position. Josh Young will line up at the other safety and Jamarcus Perry and Jahuan Riggs are among those vying for cornerback spots.

Special teams were a concern last season, but Perry is hoping the addition of Mike Burns at kicker will help solve those issues.

All totaled, Southern has 22 seniors, eight starters back on offense and eight on defense from last season’s team (7-6, 4-1) that finished second in the conference behind Cardinal Gibbons.

Perry said the crew even has tee shirts that read “Linemen lead the way.� “I wouldn’t be surprised if two or three of them end up playing on another level,� Perry said. “But that’s the heart and soul of our guys. They’re going to lead us. Whether we’re running or throwing the football, it all starts with them.�

Devonte “D.D.� Henderson returns under center for Southern this year. Perry is confident in Henderson’s mobility, but thinks he has improved as a passer. “He got a lot of game experi-

ence at the varsity level last year and we kind of nursed him along,� said Perry. “We gradually eased him up to where he could handle and more open offense and he’s a little more adapted to that this year.�

One of Henderson’s top targets will be Shaq LeMay, a slot tight end. “He’s a team leader and a charlie-hustle guy,� Perry said of LeMay. Other top threats will be Tyekwan Peace and Tyriek Branch.

E.J. Miles, who was forced to sit out last year, will be eligible to practice the first week of September.

loss in the second round of the state playoffs to a good Havelock team. “Hopefully that leadership will take over and that playoff experience from last year will come in,� said Perry. “Maybe the kids have a taste of getting into that second round and how much it hurt when they lost, use it to a positive advantage.� “Obviously the first goal you have is to get yourself in position to qualify for the playoffs,� Perry added. “The second goal after that is looking for a conference championship and keeping that record good enough so we can play some games at home.�

Uncertainty abound as Eagles look to bounce back them.

Assistant coach Waverly Jackson, now the interim coach, feels the same and aims to continue what Powell started.

The defensive coordinator, Rick Alexander, claims he was cut loose from the program, although it was initially reported that he had resigned.

Jackson brings a defensive background to the program as a former defensive linemen for Virginia Tech and later in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers and the Indianapolis Colts. Jackson retired from the NFL in 2004.

Jackson previously served as the head coach for Park View High School in Virginia for six years before joining the Warren County program last year.

But that score says a lot about Warren County’s 0-11 season in 2010 and second-year head coach Steve Powell knows it — or rather, he KNEW it.

Three days before the Eagles were slated to open the season, Powell resigned.

Jackson added that he has the same expectations out of the players that Powell does.

So what did Powell think before his resignation was announced? “We’ll be in every game. I can guarantee you that,� said Powell, about a week before the coaching announcement was made. “We’ll be in every single game we play in. I guess who makes the most mistakes will determine how things shake out.�

Vikings flying under the radar in ‘11

“When you have a big gun, you better shoot it.�

J.F. Webb’s big gun is Chris Billups, returning to the Warrior backfield after rushing for 1,200 yards last season. “When you have a 1,200-yard back — it’s like they always say, ‘When you have a big gun, you better shoot it,’� said Webb coach Brian Currin.

Currin may have his big gun back, but he won’t have the same caliber bullets he had on the offensive line last year.

Jordan Downey is the only returning starter from the offensive line.

But that won’t stop Currin from keeping his same, pound it down the opponents’ throat mentality. “We want to be a power team,� he said.

This year, the Warriors will rely more on zone option and power option. “We’ve got to have the assignments right,� Currin said.

Billups got close to 20 carries every game last year and Currin expects to see much of the same this year.

When he’s not toting the rock, returning slot-backs Anthony McKinney and Hosea Gibson will contribute. “This year, I think they’re going to be bet-

ter when they get their touches,� the coach said.

Currin says his team has plenty of overall offensive speed. They will have to adjust to the absence of graduated all-conference receiver Darquis Thomas. “It’s not that we don’t have talent, we just have to fix the mistakes,� Currin said.

Another key returner on the Warrior offense will be quarterback Tre Harris.

Harris, much like Joel Adcock of two years ago, is powerful and will be a run-first quarterback.

Harris was sidelined for almost all of 2010 after suffering an injury in the second game of the season at Person.

In preseason scrimmages, Webb has suffered a few injuries, but Currin expects to be close to healthy by Game 1.

The Warrior defense also entered the preseason depleted, returning only four starters, three in the secondary and one on the defensive line. The d-line returner is Larry Hester, who started every game last year.

Two all-conference-level players in safety Jeffery Bumpass and cornerback Tevin White should anchor the defensive backfield. “They understand the scheme and what it takes to win,� said Currin.

“Do something every day to get better.�

That’s what Darian Harris is trying to instill in his Northern Vance football players. “We try to do something every day where they are competing because in life, you’re going to compete with people,� said Harris. “So when you leave the field at the end of the day, you can say, ‘What did I do to get better?’�

Harris might be also be saying, “Where did all my players go?�

The second-year head coach lost “16 or 17� seniors from last season’s team that just missed out on the playoffs, finishing 4-7 (1-4). “And they all played an instrumental role in our season last year,�

Harris said. “So it’s a big hit for us.�

Northern returns only three defensive starters and two on offense, but Harris said a number of returning backups did get plenty of game time in 2010. “We’ve had an offseason together.

I’ve gotten to know the players, the community a little bit,� said Harris. “I think you’ll see a much better performance from the team and the program this season.�

In particular, Harris is expecting more consistency on offense.

Northern never could quite settle on a quarterback last season and early on in 2011, the battle has been narrowed down to two: sophomore Matt McCutcheon and senior Larry Champion. “It’s still undecided. Both guys will get reps in our scrimmages,� Harris said last week.

McCutcheon was the starting signal caller on the junior varsity team last year and Champion spent a majority of his time on the defensive side of the ball.

The primary threat for whichever player lands the job will be Tyquan Bryant, a former QB in his own right. “He’s a more natural receiver than quarterback,� said Harris. “He’s going to have a great season. He’s had a great summer, a great offseason.

Preston Ellis will anchor a young Viking offensive line and Tray Elam is expected to be a major contributor at running back and receiver.

Ellis, Elam and Bryant are all underclassmen.

With a small squad (29 on varsity, 27 on junior varsity), a lot of players will be required to go both ways.

Leaders of the offense, Ellis and Elam will also be relied upon defensively. Elam suits up as an outside linebacker and Ellis as a nose guard.

Dezmund Peterson will be the leader of the secondary.

Special teams will look a bit different as Northern welcomes new kicker Raymond West from the soccer team. “We lost the game to Franklinton

(last year) by an extra point so hopefully we can have that special teams stuff narrowed down before the season starts,� said Harris.

Harris has heard the talk that his team will be a pushover this season. “Southern Vance had a good season last year. Cardinal Gibbons is always in the thick of things.

Chapel Hill has its receivers coming back and the quarterback,� he said. “I guess they are expecting Orange and Northern Vance to bring up the rear. That’s the talk is Oxford Webb, Southern Vance and Cardinal Gibbons.� “We’re going to surprise some folks,� Harris added. “I’ve been impressed with how the kids have been working. We don’t have a lot of guys, but the few we have are definitely quality and they’ve been putting in good work.�

Tommy Farmer inherits loaded Spartan soccer squad

Last season, Kerr-Vance could have made a strong case to be classified as the best soccer team in the area.

In fact, the Spartans were head and shoulders above the other local teams with possibly the exception of J.F. Webb.

There’s a good chance this year won’t be much different, but how will KVA measure up in the competitive 2A Eastern Plains Independent Conference?

Warren County has plenty of room to improve its offense. The Eagles surpassed 10 points in a game only twice last season and were shut out five times.

Powell had a new tripleoption style offense in place.

Jackson wasn’t clear on what the new-look Eagles would be running — or if there would be a new look.

He wants to “try to put a program together the kids can handle and be successful in.�

Powell said he had “three and a half� quarterbacks. Last year’s starter Markell Pitchford, sophomore Kalen Evans and freshman Kendrick Wilkins make up the three.

The half Powell is referring to is Phillip Bailey, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound running back who was not eligible to play last season. “He’s a difference maker.

Powell said. “Phillip is a beast. He’s strong. He’s smart. He’s a leader. He has great hands, so he’ll be in the passing routes as well.�

Powell was hoping the attention Bailey requires will free up receiver Derrick Robinson, who often drew double coverage a

Currin feels like the conference is completely up for grabs this time around. “Some people around the state say our conference wasn’t very good,� he said. “Top to bottom, our conference is right there with any other 3A conference in the state.� “Cardinal Gibbons has a new coach. Southern Vance is always talented and well-coached,� Currin added. “Northern Vance is talented. They will be much improved and they have a good coach. “ Orange and their record in the past, they are always good. Everybody can beat everybody else.

Powell said he had received close to 20 inquiries about the guard. “He’s a hard-nosed, hardcore, quality offensive lineman.

Bailey Bailey will also serve as inside linebacker on defense, where the secondary is expected to be the strength. “Our secondary can score,� said Powell. “If any of those guys pick it off, they can all score. They cover well. They know the defense. They’ve been coached well.�

Dickerson scored close to 30 goals in 2010. “They both have strong legs,� said Farmer. “Darren can shoot from anywhere. He’s very fast, good skills. Brandon is also very tall and a good target.�

Farmer’s 2-3-2-3 formation is slightly unorthodox, but the coach likes how it suits his players.

Marshburn didn’t play last season, but brings speed to the team. Early on, he’s also shown the ability to find the back of the net.

The most important player could end up being the goalkeeper Chris Mitchell. Mitchell played outfield last season, deferring to Ric Davis.

This year, the net is all Mitchell’s. “He has a lot of experience. He’s interested in going to the next level,�

Farmer said of the keeper. “He’s got a lot of leadership. He’s got good technique, good leg strength.

He’s real savvy with putting the ball in play.

We’ll pass the ball back to him and rely on him to distribute.�

How good KVA can be may, at least in the win/ loss column may just depend on how good the conference is — and how deep 2A proves to be this year.

The Spartans finished 13-11-1 (4-4) last season, good enough for third place. The No. 2 team St. David’s of Raleigh earned a No. 4 seed in 2A and the league winner, Cary Christian, was a two-seed.

This year’s cover concept was a collaborative effort on the part of myself and Ashley Ayscue.

The photography and design was all in Mr Ayscue’s hands and he did not disappoint. Southern Vance football coach Mark Perry is hoping his cover athletes (Shaq LeMay, Xaxier Gregory, Reggie Hunter, Bryan Person) don’t disappoint. And with all of that talent, don’t bet on that happening.

Hicks era ends at Northern; Razvan regime begins

Northern Vance soccer won’t quite seem the same this season, but the keys to the program do rest in familiar hands.

Razvan Tegean will replace longtime fixture on the Vikings sideline, Northern Athletic Director David Hicks.

Hicks has been involved with soccer in the area since the late 1980s, but was forced to step down after the Vance County school board’s decision to no longer let AD’s coach.

Tegean served as Hicks’ assistant for the last four seasons.

There may be a drop off in coaching experience, but the Romania native is no stranger to the beautiful game.

He followed in his father’s footsteps, playing professionally in Romania for CFR Cluj.

Cluj qualified for the 2010-2011 Champions League, playing in the same group as world power Bayern Munich of Germany and Italy’s Roma.

Tegean began playing professionally at 17, maintaining an eight-year career with two Romanian clubs. His father also served as a head coach in the Romanian first division.

Tegean followed his wife, a teacher at Northern, to the area. Tegean himself is a physical education teacher Tegean at L.B. Yancey Elementary.

Tegean said Hicks has been like “family” to him.

“I’ve really enjoyed and still enjoy working with him,” he said. “He’s a great person,

coach, teacher, friend. He was like family for me, just because we don’t have any family here.

All of our family is back in Romania. As much as I enjoy being a head coach, I’m sorry that he’s not next to me.”

Tegean has plenty of work to do. The Vikings lost five seniors from last season and over the past two years, a total of 12 players.

On the bright side, Northern does return 11 players and will feature seven rookie players, six

of which are freshman.

“That’s going to give you a good start, thinking long term and building a team,” Tegean said.

Brandon Aycock, a right back, and Colton Floyd, a midfielder, are the only seniors.

Tegean said he isn’t expecting miracles, but does want an improvement from last season when the Vikes finished fifth in the conference standings.

The new head coach said he will adjust his style of play judging by the opponent on the pitch, but as a former striker, he admits he wants the team pushing forward.

“My big thing was to score goals,” said Tegean. “I think that’s probably the cherry on top of the cake in this sport, everything that we’re working and creating is going to end up scoring.”

Junior Barrett Johnson is the frontrunner early on to replace Will Cooper in the net.

Joining Aycock on defense will be Ethan Byrom, Cody Mitchell, and Chris Pendergrass.

Nick Sharpe, Sam Long, Jake Wiggins, Clayton Harris, Blake manning, and Tyler Manning will patrol the midfield.

The likely culprits (Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill, Orange) should be dangerous in the conference while J.F. Webb also returns some experienced talent. That’s not stopping Tegean from setting his sights high.

“We’re going to try our best to change it this year,” he said of the league standings. “We’re going to try really hard for that fourth spot to take us to playoffs.”

Warren County soccer looking for more offense

Warren County’s soccer team has something that makes it stand out from the other teams in the Northern Carolina 2A Conference: girls.

The Eagles will be a coed team again this year featuring five females. Warren County is the only team in the league that plays with both boys and girls.

The leader of that bunch is Brooke Sikes, a starting left winger.

First-year head coach Ryan Kapa says Sikes King is “being recruited by several schools.”

“Not only a strong foot, but good assistant leadership to our

captains,” Kapa said of Sikes.

“She’s not afraid to help tell kids what to do if they’re doing something wrong.”

With no girls’ team to play on, Sikes is making the most of her opportunity.

“I think they look at her as a stronger player,” Kapa said of college teams. “She’s competing against all-guy teams. It brings a strong sense of competition for her. She’s always ready to

go.”

Warren County lost only one senior from last season and Kapa is confident in the team’s defense and goalkeeper Bryan Hoadley.

Hamilton King returns as the team’s leading scorer and will be joined up top by fellow junior Ethan Frazier.

Zach Evans will captain the defense as a senior leader.

Kapa is expecting Roanoke

Rapids, North Johnston and Corinth Holders to be the class of the conference.

The goal for his team: “To build upon an offense that was relatively young last year and see an increase in goals, definitely. To continue our strong teamwork and see people step up as new leaders.”

Raider runners want some magic

BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH SPORTS EDITOR

Two years ago, Southern Vance cross country coach Michael Bean had only five runners at the first meet of the season.

This year, he’ll have 14, despite losing 10 runners to graduation.

The Southern team is made up of seven boys and seven girls, the most the Raiders have ever had going into the season.

For the girls, Taylor Stanton and Jessica Fairley will be two of the key returners.

“The ones I really want to keep an eye on are Kaylan Hoyle and Samantha Patrick,” said Bean.

“Samantha was one of my top runners last year, so I’m really looking forward to

seeing what she can do.”

Recruiting multi-sport athletes like Hoyle and Patrick has become Bean’s bread and butter.

“That’s kind of how I trick them into doing it,” Bean joked.

“The kids that do it seem to genuinely enjoy it,” Bean added. “The kids I have seem to enjoy the running and I think that’s the important thing.”

Bean said the girls’ team has a chance at breaking the school record for wins.

On the boys’ side, Ian Metcalf and Jonathan Maddox will lead the way.

Maddox is the top returning male runner.

“With Jonathan Maddox, Ian and Kyle, I’m hoping between those three, we can make a little bit of magic happen,” Bean said.

Bright future for KVA CC girls Kerr-Vance’s cross country team will feature eight girls and three boys this season. Coach Courtney Nutter said the program has been “up and down” as far as numbers go. Two years ago, the team had 17 boys on the roster.

Nutter did say the girls’ team is stronger than it has ever been. The team has no seniors. One of the leaders will be freshman Addison Mabry — but she is no rookie, but rather a veteran of the program.

“She has a great future ahead of her,” said Nutter.

Nutter is also expecting big things out of Kayla Holder, an eighth grader and Britney Lopez, a junior. She also expects seventh grader Carrington Matias to contribute.

Nutter said Lopez is a “very dedicated runner” and that “running is her passion.”

Nutter added that she often looks to the girls she coaches in cheerleading to help field the team, but some girls on the squad do consider running their “No. 1 sport.”

The boys need two more runners to be able to compete as a team. Cody Huber, Anthony Montone and Piers Tooley are the current three on the roster.

Dynamic trio returns for Webb Elliott, Pruitt, Hill are back for hungry Warriors

“Back with a vengeance.”

Expect that to be the battle cry for J.F. Webb soccer in 2011.

The Warriors’ season ended in heartbreak and heroics last year.

The heroics: Goalkeeper Shea Stepusin played out of his mind against top-seed Northern Guilford in the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs, stopping shots left and right. Coach Allie Urbanski estimated the senior made around 30 saves for the No. 4 Warriors.

“He was an absolute beast,” Urbanski said after the game.

“I’ve never seen a high school goalie play like that. I don’t think a professional goalie could have played any better.”

Stepusin helped keep his team in the game as a Stephen Hill goal had the Oxford bunch up a score for most of the game.

Then came the heartbreak: After letting the game flow all along, the referee pointed to the penalty spot with just over three seconds left in the match.

Northern Guilford converted and sent the game to extra time, where it added two goals to win and advance to the second round.

“That is still so fresh in their minds,” said Urbanski. “It’s almost like they’re continuing last season and coming back with a vengeance.”

And the Warriors have just the group do it with.

Stepusin won’t be in the net, but the dynamic attacking senior triumvirate of Andrew Pruitt, Alex Elliott and Hill are back and poised for success.

“They’ve been playing together since middle school. The

three of them have so much chemistry,” said Urbanski.

Pruitt is the midfield maestro, orchestrating the flow of the attack.

Hill and Elliott are quick and polished finishers and will score the bulk of the team’s goals.

“He (Alex) and Stephen are very compatible. They’re always expecting great things,” said Urbanski.

The other seniors are Grant Parrott and James Chavis.

Webb lost three seniors from last season as well as exchange student and defensive player Eskender Khayserov.

The biggest question mark will likely be placed on the back line and the goal.

Urbanski is especially optimistic about what freshman defenders Luke Wheless and Timmy Smith bring.

Transfer Brandon Frazier is also in the defensive mix and Brandon Isley is slated to be goalkeeper.

“He’s got good instincts,” Urbanski said of Isley. “He’s a good leader, he talks a lot. He’s good at directing the back line.”

Urbanski says if Webb’s “going to do it, this is going to be the year.”

But what exactly is “it?”

“I think second or third is definitely a possibility. It’s a tough conference, but this team looks pretty good,” said Urbanski. “I think just to improve on our record from last year. I think it’s realistic to expect to beat Orange in both games and give Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons a run for their money.”

“It seems like we’re starting to put it together,” Thompson said of the team overall. “We’re leaving certain parts of the floor too open. We have to move just a little bit better. But I think we are going to be okay.”

Southern Vance tennis coach Mike Bertner lost seven seniors from a good team.

He admits they need to rebuild,

but wants the team to “play hard and do the best possible.”

Morgan Richardson, Jametrice Glover and Alexandra Bercik are battling it our for the top spots.

The Raiders do have two JV returners on what Bertner calls a

“spirited squad.”

“I’m excited for another season.

I’m excited to have a good one,” said Bertner.

Matthews enters 2nd year at V. Christian

Entering her second season as head volleyball coach at Victory Christian, Rebecca Matthews has three returning starters.

Priscilla Nobles, Stephanie Matthews and

Amy-Jo Hissong are all returning veterans for Matthews.

The Eagles lost two seniors from last year, Brooke Loughlin and Megan Stell.

Victory had a solid season last year and Matthews is hoping for another one.

“My expectation is to take it all if the girls play with the heart and desire that I see in practice,” said Matthews.

Allison Stell, Kayla Padgett and Taylor Alston have looked good setting so far as Matthews continues to feel out who is going where on the floor.

Big season expected for Crusader volleyball

Coach J.D. Wright is striving for excellence at Norlina Christian. If he doesn’t quite get there, he knows his volleyball team will be “very good” at the least.

The Crusaders were a good team last season, finishing up with a mark of 10-6.

“I’m not expecting any less out of them this year to be honest with you,” said Wright.

They lost only one senior and one other player who isn’t participating.

The junior varsity team has four girls who have never played an organized game, but the varsity girls are seasoned.

“I’m expecting a decent JV team. My varsity, I’m expecting to be excellent,” said Wright.

Norlina has three seniors: Holly Eatmon, Anna Davis and Bridgett Matthews.

Eatmon and Davis are the Crusaders’ two setters.

“I dare say Holly is the best player I’ve had in quite awhile,” Wright said.

“She does set, but she can spike well. She does it all. I use her often to show how it’s supposed to be done.”

Deja Palmer, Anna Britt Harty, Taylor Eatmon, Laura Mosley, and Molly Harty round out the team.

Wright’s goals for the season?

“To win every game,” he said with a chuckle.

“We play some good, good teams, but I’m expecting to be very good.”

Last season was a season to forget for Southern Vance volleyball.

After a deep playoff run in 2009, the youthful Raiders managed only two wins.

Southern is youthful again this year, but coach Tracey Turner said this is a completely different team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really picking up almost five chapters ahead of where they started last year,â&#x20AC;? said Turner.

Turner said more girls are playing Junior Olympic and â&#x20AC;&#x153;you can see the growth.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m watching a team transition so much better,â&#x20AC;?

Turner added.

Amber Edwards and Meredith Moore are the only returning seniors.

Edward is a senior setter while freshman Bryanna Simmons is expected to contribute heavily.

Southernâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s softball squad isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only team on campus with its future resting squarely on Megan Hight and Kiyanna Kearney.

Hight and Kearney are standout volleyball players too, coming off of successful freshman campaigns.

Kearney is returning from a fractured wrist suffered while playing with the Henderson/Vance AllStar softball team, but Turner said she is good to go and is establishing herself as the go-to person.

Turner said Hightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success on the softball diamond could propel her to a better sophomore season on the hardwood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really grown,â&#x20AC;? said Turner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more vocal, leading the team on and off the court.â&#x20AC;?

As usual, Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill are the conference favorites. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to fight real hard just to finish third.

And that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean you had a bad season,â&#x20AC;? said Turner. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being No. 1 in this conference means something different.â&#x20AC;?

If April Abbott guides Northern Vance volleyball to a second straight state playoff berth, it will be with a much different looking group than she had last season.

Six seniors graduated from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squad that finished fourth in the Carolina 3A standings in Abbottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first season as coach. The team bowed out in the first round of the playoffs.

Reigning Daily Dispatch Player of the Year Hannah Thompson will be the most difficult player to replace from last season. Thompson, an attacking force for the Vikes, will play libero at N.C. State this season.

Edwards, Elliott and Abbott are the only returning starters.

Abbott will benefit from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successful junior varsity season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that the ones that came up from JV last year are going to be able to bring something for us when their time comes,â&#x20AC;?

Abbott said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This year is going to be different because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m

trying to separate it: our hitters versus our passers,â&#x20AC;? Abbott added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not trying to let someone who has better ball control stay in one position, so we can move some stuff up.â&#x20AC;?

Abbott said the move should be advantageous against taller teams as the blue and gold try to keep the ball off the floor.

Abbott is expecting big improvement from Abbott and Edwards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lauren, as a senior, is determined to step up,â&#x20AC;? the coach said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Red (Rebekah) is going to be our libero this year so sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be ready to pick up some balls on the floor. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got her goal set for how many digs she wants before the end of the season and she said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to do what it takes to get it.â&#x20AC;?

McMillen energizes Kerr-Vance

Kerr-Vance volleyball is loaded with seniors and loaded with energy thanks to new head coach Randi McMillen.

McMillen, replacing coach Paul Ross, joined KVA from Vance Charter School, where she served as an assistant volleyball coach. She will continue to teach at VCS. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say anything better about the way Paul left the program,â&#x20AC;? McMillen said.

Before the season began, she said she was happy to follow in the footsteps of her father, Randy, and mother, Darlynn, both longtime coaches at Southern. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always loved playing and I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time I gave that up,â&#x20AC;? McMillen joked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the game of volleyball. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my favorite sport.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think I can leave the gym â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that might be my parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fault.

McMillen herself was a Raider standout, but she may have had the wrong idea about private school

volleyball. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I used to think it was not as competitive. I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say that anymore,â&#x20AC;? said McMillen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The girls are just as good now. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re catching up.â&#x20AC;?

McMillen said her main goal coming in was to bring some youthfulness back and teach the girls how to have a good time.

‘Dedicated’ group for KVA

NVHS netters have solid future Top three seeds return for Arthurs,Vikings

By KELLEN HOLTZMAN Dispatch Sports Editor

Northern Vance tennis lost seven seniors from last season’s team that finished third in the Carolina 3A standings.

The silver lining for the Vikings: the top-three seeds (Erin Crews, Rachel Riddle, Mary Oakley) are all back.

Even better, Riddle is just a sophomore and Crews and Oakley are both juniors.

“That’s encouraging and it really makes you work hard because you know you can build into the future,” said coach Jeff Arthurs.

As for the rest of the squad, that’s still a work in progress early in the season.

“We have lots of new people and they are getting better every day,” said Arthurs. “We’ll just see who fits in where.”

With a young team, Arthurs is relying on a pair of senior veterans for leadership, Callie Faulkner and Kristie Golding.

“I have a couple of seniors who have really stepped up and been the leaders and the organizers,” Arthurs said of the duo. “So I really rely a lot on them.”

Arthurs is hoping to be competitive once again. A tougher non-conference ledger should help prepare the Vikings for league mates Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons.

“We have a much tougher schedule, especially out of conference, which is something I asked for,” Arthurs said.

“We’ll have our work cut out for us. That’s for sure.”

Kerr-Vance girls’ tennis lost three seniors to graduation and has no seniors coming back for 2011.

Candy Adkins is back coaching with the Spartans after taking last year off. Previously, she was a co-coach.

“This is a really dedicated, hard-working group of girls,” said Adkins. “They always encourage each other. I’m optimistic about this year.”

Meredith Freeman, a former three-seed will be the top seed this season for the Spartans, followed by Price Wester, Cassidy Tucker, and Cameron Ford.

Adkins praised Freeman and Wester, both three-sport athletes, for their work ethic.

Adkins said her team is working not only on their physical game, but their mental game as well.

Eagle tennis wants top spot Senior-laden team at WCHS

With a season of coaching the boys under his belt, Warren County coach David Keesee now turns his attention to the girls’ tennis program.

Keesee took the reigns of the Eagles tennis program from longtime coach Tom Traylor in the spring and will be coaching the girls for the first time this fall.

Keesee and the Eagles are working on building depth, but with four seniors returning, the outlook is positive for the 2011 season.

Sh-kiyrah Johnson, Breanna Faulcon, Ashleigh Smith, and Calena Jeffries are all returning

and expected to be the top seeds.

Warren County finished second in the conference last year behind Roanoke Rapids.

“We’re shooting Keesee for that first spot in the conference,” said Keesee.

Early on, Keesee is looking to provide the proper preparation for the Eagles.

“We’re really just working hard, hitting a lot of balls and trying to get them ready for

the season,” he said.

Keesee added that this team has “a lot of potential to be pretty good.”

“They had the Johnson fundamentals down,” he said.

“They just really hadn’t had the training, so they’re going to improve pretty fast by the end of the year.”
