Ready to turn corners, heads on the way up BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

Northern Vance head coach Eric Watkins is seeking to “re-establish” Northern Vance football after three consecutive losing seasons. Northern is a combined 6-27 in its previous three campaigns, winning just once in 2011. The Vikings’ last state playoff appearance came in 2008. Watkins, who officially joined the program over the summer, knows a thing or two about Eric Watkins success, having built Henderson Middle School into a consistent winner, and more important — a reliable feeder school for Southern Vance. Now Watkins turns his focus to Northern, which has plenty of talent returning, especially at the skill positions. The face of the team is Tray Elam, a senior running back on offense and linebacker on defense. Watkins said he expects Elam to be a 1,000yard rusher this season. “He shows that every day in practice,” Watkins said. “He works hard every day. I can see him getting 1,000 yards. That’s my goal for Tray.” Elam has a couple of tough, experienced offensive linemen to open holes for him in Preston Ellis and Montel Clark. They’ll also be moving bodies for senior quarterback Tyquan Bryant, who showed in the pre-season Pigskin Jamboree that Elam isn’t the only Viking with wheels. “What he brings most is leadership. He leads by example,” Watkins said of Bryant. The Vikings’ coach said Bryant could also line

up as a receiver as he has in the past for Northern. Bryant’s classmate, Travon Scott, should be one of his top targets, although Elam is the team’s leading returning receiver after the departure of Armani Williams to VMI. Tight end Connor McFalls is also back for the Vikes. Even with a couple of standouts, Watkins said defense will be the strength of the team. Elam will be another leader in that department on the outside of a linebacker corps that Watkins is very high on. Junior Devin Anderson will play in the middle with sophomore Anthony Davis on the other side. “He’s a great kid, has great character,” Watkins said of Anderson, who will also get carries on offense. “He’s a great student-athlete representing Northern Vance High School. He’s just an all-around great kid. He works hard.” Clark and Mykel Williams return to anchor the defensive line and they will welcome a huge addition in 6-foot-2, 380-pound tackle Anthony Jennings, a Southern Vance transfer. “For his size, he can really move,” said Watkins. “He’s a big addition. It allows us to not use some of our offensive linemen (on defense) as much.” Benjamin Stewart leads the secondary at cornerback. Bryant will play free safety and could be joined by freshman, Kristopher Haywood. Scott will also line up as a defensive back. When Watkins was hired, he proclaimed that he would be winning at Northern. “I don’t know any other way,” he said. While Northern was picked to finish last in the league this season, Watkins is expecting the resurgence of Viking football to come sooner rather than later.

Defenders, Mount Bullock anchor hopes BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

All the pieces appeared to be in place for Southern Vance to make a deep run in the 3-A state playoffs a season ago, but the Raiders’ season ended in heartbreak at Clayton Cleveland. Southern’s 21-point fourth-quarter lead evaporated with Cleveland tying the game in the final minute. The Raiders, a No. 2 seed, lined up for the winning kick inside the 5-yard line with less than a second on the clock, but the Rams blocked the kick, returned it for a score and advanced to the third round. Most of those Raider pieces are not returning for new head coach Lewis Young, who previously served as former coach Mark Perry’s defensive coordinator. But the cupboard isn’t exactly bare, Lewis Young either. The Raiders will lean heavily on Reggie Hunter and Xavier Gregory. Young believes they are two of the best defensive players in the state. Both can play just about anywhere on the field, on both sides of the ball, but Hunter stands out at middle linebacker and Gregory at defensive end. Hunter was named pre-season all-state by NCPreps.com after 136 tackles and eight sacks in 2011. “He’s the team leader,” Young said. “It’s just great to have a guy like Reggie Hunter on the team. He does whatever you ask him to do.” Gregory was second on the team in tackles and led the team with 10 sacks. “I think Xavier is in the same category as Reggie Hunter,” said Young. “He might not get all the publicity Reggie gets, but as far as sheer talent and playing ability, he’s a Division I talent. He’s so fast, he’s strong — he’s benching over 300 pounds.” Then there’s Mount Bullock, also known as Jaquez Bullock, a returning defensive tackle. Young said the massive, 6-foot-7, 350-pound junior has received interest from LSU, Nebraska, North Carolina, N.C. State and Wake Forest, to name a few schools. “We’ve been getting letters every week,” said Young. “He’s a monster. He’s a beast inside.” Bullock and Gregory are joined on the defensive line by returner

Maurice Howard. Jahun Ricks will miss the season for Southern in the secondary due to injury, leaving Jamarcus Perry (cornerback) and Ty-Traveon Roberts to anchor the backfield. Southern got a big lift last season from kicker Mike Burns, who was named all-conference honorable mention. Michael Lopez and Chris Henderson are the leading candidates to replace him. Young must also fill the void of nearly an entire offense, including leading receiver E.J. Miles, tight end Shaq LeMay and an offensive line that paved the way for Miles Clifton to rush for close to 1,400 yards. Chris Henderson, a returning allconference all-purpose back, returns but the Raiders will not have Clifton or Bryan Person, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2010. “He’s just a great running back,” said Young said of Henderson. “He’s hard to bring down and he’s got good vision to cut on a dime.” Young also likes what he’s been seeing from Qualik Shearin, a quick, shifty back. Southern lost not only the entirety of a strong offensive line, but also the group’s backup players. Young, however, is optimistic about the new crop which features Taheed Evans, Charlie Kersey and Xavier Fields. “We got some guys that are looking pretty good that I think are going to be OK for us,” Young said. Despite the offensive inexperience, the Raiders are as strong at quarterback as they’ve been since James Harris led the team in 2009. De’Vante Henderson emerged as perhaps the best signal caller in the area last season and is poised for another big year. “Great arm, great running ability. It’s great to have a senior like that coming back,” said Young. “His accuracy has improved. He’s really throwing the ball well. I think this year he has total command of the offense. He knows exactly how to get everyone in the right place at the right time.” Through the preseason, Cameron Evans and Shawn Henderson look to be the top receiving targets. Young has been pleased with the progression of the rebuilding offense, but says Southern will be “defense first.” “I think we’ll be a strong defensive team this year,” he said. “And then we’ll try and build on that.” Contact the writer at kholtzman@ hendersondispatch.com.

Two years ago, J.F. Webbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s junior varsity football team dominated the 3-A Carolina Conference on its way to an unbeaten season. Warrior coach Brian Currin, the only area head coach returning, is banking on that past success translating to the varsity level this season. Brian Currin Webb had a strong year in 2010, finishing third in the league, but a high volume of graduations, combined with a number of injuries, left the Warriors depleted last season. Currin said Webb will hang its hat on its defensive front seven, led by returning all-conference middle linebacker Bryan Smith. The Warrior coach said the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Smith can â&#x20AC;&#x153;definitely play at the next level,â&#x20AC;? he just needs to find the right fit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got exactly what you want in a linebacker,â&#x20AC;? said Currin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got good size. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got good speed. He just has a nose for the ball and wants to go hit somebody.â&#x20AC;? Smith leads a stacked group of linebackers that also includes Christian Tilley and Rufus Terry (all-conference honorable mention), also returning starters. Sophomore Gearl Majors lines up at one defensive end with senior Matt Hobgood on the other. In between are Eris Hart and Cedric Spence (all-conference honorable mention). Webbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secondary is less experienced on the varsity level. Seniors James Strong and Deshawn Skipwith are joined by junior Nyqwanza Henderson and junior safety Antonio Bowden. Bowden had a good summer, highlighted by a seveninterception performance at an Averett University summer camp. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really come on strong, has a good nose for the ball,â&#x20AC;? Currin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d expect big things from him and of course, he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t started a game.â&#x20AC;? The Warriors offense should be more diverse this season with dual-threat junior quarterback Corey Evans coming up from JV. Currin expects Webb to go under center more this

season rather than out of the shotgun formation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With Corey back there and some of our receivers coming back, we can now throw the ball when we feel like it,â&#x20AC;? Currin said. Skipwith is the top target for Evans. The senior is Webbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading returner in touchdowns, receptions and rushing. Henderson, junior Beau Smith and sophomore Taylor Williams will also line up at receiver. The Warriors must replace Chris Billups, who was just short of 1,000 rushing yards last season. Evans and junior Tobiah Lewis will see most of the carries in 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As long as they can keep doing what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve shown in the last couple of years on JV and what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve shown so far in camp this year, we should have a good year from those two guys,â&#x20AC;? Currin said. Evans and Lewis have some experience in front of them on the offensive line. All five of Currinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top linemen (left tackle Si-Kevvs Johnson, left guard Jacob Williford, center Antonio Jones, right guard Cameron Blanchard, right tackle Zach Watkins) started at some point last season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They get off the ball well and that playing experience from last year helps,â&#x20AC;? said Currin. Currin believes his starters can compete with anyone, but the team must work on building more depth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As long as we stay healthy, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be OK,â&#x20AC;? said Currin. Warren County Winging a no-nonsense approach BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

Warren County wowed the field recently at the Southern Vance Pigskin Jamboree with the debut of its single-wing offense, but first-year head coach John Ward didn’t plan on allowing his team get “fat and happy” after the impressive performance. “They can’t confuse this with a game,” Ward said following the scrimmage. Ward John Ward has about 36 years of coaching experience on both the college and high school level. He succeeds Waverly Jackson, who took over the Eagles program after the departure of Steve Powell just days before the start of the 2011 season. Warren County is seeking its first winning season since former East Carolina running back Marvin Townes led the team to a 6-5 mark in 1999. The Eagles did show great improvement last season after no wins in 2010, but most of last year’s key

performers are gone. Ward’s no-nonsense approach has been tough on some of the Eagles, the coach said. “Some guys have not hung in there and stayed with it.” The “leading athlete” in the preseason has been junior Chris Privett, who will start at middle linebacker and should get plenty of carries at tailback. “He’s a kid that physically goes very fast, very hard all the time,” said Ward. The quarterback will be junior Jaquan Jones, who regularly found the end zone on his feet in the jamboree. “He runs the ball real well,” Ward said. “He’s a lefthanded thrower. He’s got to grow as a thrower. He’s got to get better for us to get better. He’s not a great thrower right now, but he’s getting better every day.” Josh Davis and newcomer Ceazar Ryan have stood out at receiver in the pre-season. John Sidberry and Brandon Hargrove return to anchor the offensive line. Junior fullback Devonte Hargrove is the leading returner in both rushing and touchdowns. Senior back Derke Wortham also looked strong in the jamboree.

Defensively, senior James Clark and sophomore Otis Bullock join Privett at linebacker. Senior nose tackle Clyde Jones is the leader in the trenches. “We’re not really big, but they’ll be quick,” Ward said of the defensive line. Senior Stephon Alston is the only returning starter in the secondary. He should also get some looks on kick and punt returns, along with Privett and Jones. Like most teams in the area, Ward said special

teams are a work in progress at this point in the season. Ward has preached “getting better every day” throughout the preseason. After the jamboree, Ward said, “We’re better right this second than we were two hours ago.” If the Eagles can continue to improve at the rate they appear to be, that elusive winning season could be within reach sooner than many might have guessed. At Kerr-Vance, Nutter is two members shy of having a boys team, although Jacob Goswick, Pierce Tooley and Jacob Bowen can compete individually. There are eight total Spartans on the roster. Nutter said Tooley is a runner to look out for after he improved his times dramatically last year from the previous season. Kayla Holder recorded the top time for KerrVance in the state meet last season, finishing 18th overall. The KVA girls finished eighth out of 19 teams in the meet. Holder was all-conference as an eighth-grader in 2011. Addison Mabry joins Holder as a strong underclassman and also earned all-conference honors last season.

The 3-A Carolina Conference coaches in the area all seem to agree that Cardinal Gibbons is in a league of its own when it comes to tennis. And all three coaches are sharing realistic goals for their programs in 2012. The consensus is the defending league and 3-A state champion Crusaders are the favorite in the Carolina Conference again. “Cardinal Gibbons is a completely different animal,” said Northern coach Jeff Arthurs. “They have probably 15 different players that would be No. 1 for us.” Chapel Hill has also been strong since the league’s inception, leaving Orange, Northern, Southern Vance and J.F. Webb fighting for third place. Only the top two teams make it to the state playoffs. “Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill are just a different world,” said Webb coach Will Darden. “But even on those nights, we can at least try to be competitive.” “There are no App States defeating Michigan here,” added Darden. At Southern Vance, Bernard Alston is in his first season as head coach after leading the Raider boys in the spring. Alston hopes to add underclassmen to his roster to help build the program. “The programs that do have success — that’s what they do,” he said. “They’re not scrambling to get enough players to field a team.” Most of Alston’s players this season are seniors, led by team captain Jametrice Glover. “I know we’re kind of building, taking a program and trying to return some of the luster. They have a history of winning,” Alston said. “The aim and goal is to try and get back to that.” Southern and Webb tied at the bottom of the league last season. Darden has eight returning Warriors, but no seniors. Northern finished third in 2011, sweeping Orange, Southern and Webb. Arthurs returns his top-five seeds from a season ago. In the private school ranks, Kerr-Vance has a tough 2-A Eastern Plains Independent Conference to contend with in its own right. Arendell Parrott Academy won the league last season and should be strong again this year The Spartans’ top seed from 2011, Meredith Freeman, will miss her senior season with an ACL injury.

KVA coach Candy Adkins expects a “close group” of Spartan netters to build on last season’s fourth-place league finish. Around the bend at Crossroads Christian, Hilda Delbridge has some rebuilding to do — and “a lot of teaching.” The Colts lost four of their top seven players from last season. Lora Yount and Holly Waddell, who played Nos. 4 and 5 a year ago, are back. Delbridge said the other team members have shown some athletic prowess. “The girls seem enthusiastic,” she said. “You have to be patient. Expectations, by the dozen Kerr-Vance talent pool extends deep BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

Kerr-Vance has about as much experience as a team could ask for — and plenty of talent, too. The Spartans return a dozen seniors led by Brandon Dickerson, Darren Doyle, Dallas Smith and Wyatt Evans. Dickerson will spend much of his time at striker. He scored 31 goals last season on his way to being named all-state. His primary attacking partner is midfielder Doyle, who can also move up as a forward. “Brandon has great composure in front of the goal. When balls are played into him, he doesn’t panic,” said KVA head coach Tommy Farmer. “Darren has fantastic speed and good foot skills. He controls a lot of things. He really puts a lot of pressure on the other team’s defense.” Dallas Smith will patrol the pitch as a stopper with Wyatt Evans serving as a sweeper on the back line. “Dallas has great skills as far as tackling the ball away, has great vision,” said Farmer. “Wyatt can anticipate well. He saved us a lot of times with balls back through. He was able to clear them away before they could get shots on goal.” Troy Bickle, Daniel Burnette, Hayes Griggs, George Hoyle, Franklin Irvin, Josh Monahan, Luke Pegram and Jake Ruggles round out the senior class. Farmer is looking to Ruggles to replace goalkeeper Chris Mitchell, who is now at Mars Hill College. Juan Lopez, a transfer from Southern Vance, could also give the Spartans a lift. Farmer said the sophomore has good speed and isn’t afraid to demand the ball. Most of KVA’s upperclassmen play with the same Oxford-based club team. That cohesiveness could prove beneficial against Triangle foes St. David’s and Cary Christian, which finished at the top of the conference last season. J.F. Webb earned a top-three finish in the 3-A Carolina Conference last season, but the Warriors graduated their dynamic attacking trio of Stephen Hill, Alex Elliott and Andrew

Pruitt as well as defender Grant Parrott. First-year head coach Sean Barnes is replacing Allie Urbanski, who will stay on as coach of the Lady Warriors. Barnes has coached in Granville County for the past seven years, including a stint as the Northern Granville Middle School head coach. He spent last season leading South Granville’s boys and girls teams. “I’m just overjoyed to be back in this area and coaching this team,” said Barnes. “It’s just a good feeling to be able to coach these guys again and see through what I started.” Despite a significant loss of skill, Barnes feels good about what he has returning. “We’ve got a lot of youth, but that’s not an excuse for what we want to do,” he said. Barnes said senior Luis Donaldo and junior Jamie Gomez should form a potent strike-force at the top of his 4-4-2 formation. Zach Espino and Will Gillespie return in the midfield and will be joined by two new defensive midfielders, Josh Liddane and Luke Wheeless. The Warriors return three of four defensive starters and junior Branson Isley will play in goal again. “Dedicated goalie,” Barnes said. “I’m going to push for him to be all-conference this year.”

Webb swept Northern and Southern Vance last season. The Raiders finished fifth in front of the Vikings. Razvan Tegean returns to Northern for his second season as head coach. The Vikings have 15 returning players. “This is a very special group for me,” said Tegean. “I’ve worked with them since their freshman year. All of them — the whole group — it’s a great group of kids.” Joseph Sharpe and Raymond West will be looked to for scoring, especially. Tegean said sophomore midfielder Jake Wiggins has come back stronger and faster. Wiggins will partner with Tyler Manning, Reed Kimbrell, and Luke Trull in the midfield. Chris Pendergrass, Jaleel Seward and Ethan Byrom lead the defense in front of goalkeeper Barrett Johnson. “He’s strong, fast, good control of the ball,” Tegean said of Byrom. “I can use him anywhere I need him on the field.” In 2-A, conditioning has been the name of the game in the preseason for new head coach Jason Fullen and Warren County. Fullen, a native of Columbus, Ohio, says he has a fundamentally good team; they just weren’t in the best shape. “We’ve spent the first two weeks getting in good condition,” he said. “We’ve been running every single day, just getting them in shape.” Leading the fitness movement is senior captain Hamilton King, one of 10 returning players. Midfielder Brooke Sikes is a four-year starter. Fullen also said he will look to Darian Sellers to provide distribution in the middle. Ethan Frazier should be another key contributor for an Eagle team that failed to a win a game last season. Crossroads Christian didn’t fare any better last year. Short on numbers, injuries forced the Colts to suspend their season after five games. But Crossroads is back in 2012 and coach Joshua Bogle has his sights set on a competitive season. Holden Hedgepeth scored the majority of the team’s goals in last year’s abbreviated season. Captain Sam Jones is also back and Joseph Brown will suit up in net. Trio of new directions New head coaches debut at Northern, Southern, Warren County BY KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

New volleyball head coaches will debut this season at Northern Vance, Southern Vance and Warren County. That leaves J.F. Webbâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ellis Crews as the lone returning area coach in the 3-A Carolina Conference. The Warriors return nine players from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team that snuck into the state playoffs after winning a three-way tiebreaker with Northern and Southern for the fourth spot in the league standings. Hayley Marshburn had a breakout freshman campaign a season ago, earning all-conference honors. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll alternate between middle and strong hitter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pure athlete,â&#x20AC;? said Crews. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very versatile. She can play any position.â&#x20AC;? Senior captain Victoria Hughes will lead the team at middle blocker and Caroline Joyner will be the setter. Cat Pittard, Stephanie Moyer and Brook Roberson join Hughes in the senior class. Crews thinks Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill and Orange should all be strong again. He said â&#x20AC;&#x153;everyone in the countryâ&#x20AC;? wants Orangeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6-foot-2 outside hitter Jamie Lea. Gibbons, the three-time defending 3-A state champion, lost star player Madison Bugg to Stanford, but will reload, according to Crews. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They got players that will be playing on television next year,â&#x20AC;? he said. If the conference tiebreaker last season had been settled on the softball field, Southern would have been in good shape. The Raidersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; most talented players also happen to be standouts on the diamond. Juniors Kiyanna Kearney and Megan Hight will trade catcher and third base, respectively, for middle and outside hitter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people look to them. They are really two of the leaders of the team,â&#x20AC;? said first-year head coach Shannon Allen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m looking for a big role from Kiyanna Kearney. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletic and she really leads all around. Megan is a great leader by example.â&#x20AC;? Allen, a Southern Vance graduate, served as an assistant to Tracey Turner for one season before stepping in as head coach. Freshman Brittany West is a Kerr-Vance transfer and could make an immediate impact. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also play basketball and softball for the Raiders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very talented,â&#x20AC;? Allen said of the rookie hitter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be so young, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really like abnormally talented, but sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s filling in a key role.â&#x20AC;?

Allen added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we go and play these higher-seeded teams, they need to be worried about us.â&#x20AC;? Southern and Northern split last season with the Vikings taking the season finale to force the three-way tie. Northern head coach Meredith Thompson, who played at Barton, inherits five returning players, led by senior Kara Reese. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She passes really well, she serves well, she blocks,â&#x20AC;? said Thompson. Kristin Long will be a defensive specialist with junior Jesse Edwards at the net and Emily Hilliard hitting on the outside. Northern also added two Southern transfers, Elizabeth and McKenzie Gay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know we have a lot of work to do to build from last season, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really excited about teaching them a lot of new skills in a game that I really enjoy,â&#x20AC;? Thompson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no pressure,â&#x20AC;? Thompson added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a lot of really talented girls. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just figuring out who works best where and who works best with each other.â&#x20AC;?

A familiar face rounds out the area coaching changes. Shannon Jones replaces Wanda Thompson at Warren County. Jones coached the Eaglesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; varsity girls basketball and softball teams last year. Warren County lost only one player to graduation. Among the private schools, Crossroads Christian head coach Christie Hayes is looking to her daughter, Jessi, to lead the Colts once again this season. Jessi, a senior, will see time at outside hitter and setter. Crossroadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; regular setter, Ali Arnold, could miss at least half of the season with an injury, meaning Michaela Nicholas will see a bigger role this season. Lizzy Long and Caroline May will play in the middle. Christie Hayes said she is looking for another outside power hitter. Crossroads is scheduled to host neighborhood rival Kerr-Vance Sept. 14. KVA has only one returning player in junior middle hitter Bryles Cutts. Spartan coach Randi McMillen said her team showed promise at UNCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team camp over the summer.
