Bob’s BBQ in Creedmoor was founded in 1970 by Paula Ellington’s mom and dad. “My grandfather had a barbecue place in Roxboro and my mom convinced him to move it to Creedmoor, said Ellington. “I started working at the restaurant as a freshman in high school. Ellington pursued a career in real estate after school, but soon returned to the barbecue restaurant when her daughter was old enough for pre-school. “My mom called to see if I’d come help her for a bit, and I’ve been here every since, she says with a hearty laugh. She and her twin sister purchased the business in 1997. For Ellington, the chamber is the glue that holds Granville County together. “This is a big county and when I was growing up, the Tar River was definitely the dividing line between southern and northern Granville County. In fact, the county even had two separate chambers of commerce at that time, she remembers. The restaurant has been a chamber member from the start. Ellington appreciates the exposure her business receives county-wide as a result of chamber events held at the restaurant as well as the referrals that come through the chamber. “The chamber has done a lot to bring the county together and to provide information on important issues.

Safe harbor
Masonic Home focuses on stability for its children Faces change, but the family care never does. Not through 140 years. The Masonic Home for Children in Oxford has provided a safe harbor for children since 1873. Each year, there’s an alumni gathering, with Shriners and Masons coming to lend support. And there are new children with unique circumstances. Some stay a short time. Others spend most of their childhood and adolescence. The family atmosphere is always present. The stories of many represent the power of the Masonic Home to enrich the lives of the young people it serves and have served for more than 140 years. For some it is a haven. For others it is simply a station on the route to another phase of life. But for many it is a stabilizing force in their lives. “This place changed my life,” said Tina Gilreath. “I was given more support than I could have gotten anywhere else.” Before it opened its doors as the Oxford
Orphan Asylum in 1873, a search for the use of the property had gone on for a number of years. The Grand Lodge of the Masonic Fraternity first attempted to establish a college, which it named St. John’s College. A building was constructed and the college opened in 1858. But is also soon closed. The lodge decided that the college should be turned into a place for protection, training and educating “indigent” orphan children. The Oxford Orphan Asylum admitted its first three residents in February 1873. It has operated continuously since, although the name has been changed twice. In 1923 it became Oxford Orphanage. That name gave way to the Masonic Home for Children in 1994. Although the name has changed, service to young people has remained its purpose. And the Masons have continued their support as a fraternity and as individuals. “People need to know what the Masons
have done for kids in this state,” said Chris Richardson, the director of financial development. “They are taking care of kids who will never see their faces.” Much of the home’s financial support comes from Masons, Richardson said. “There are Masons who have never set foot on this campus who left us something in their wills,” Richardson said. Mary Helen Parrott has worked in finance and development at the Masonic Home for more than a quarter century. “I wish there was some way I could tell them what their support does for the children here,” she said. The emphasis at the Masonic Home, from administrator Kevin Otis throughout the entire staff, is making a home in the real sense of the word. Parrott said the staff and children are “one big family.” “We make sure what they take away is Continued on page 14

Oak Hill! Granville camp ‘makes Christ known’ to thousands of young people
Forty years ago Greg Poole Jr. made an investment in Granville County. Over the decades, his vision for that investment, known as Camp Oak Hill and Retreat Center, has touched the lives of thousands. But the story of the camp begins a year earlier on a day in April 1972 at the site of the abandoned Oak Hill High School off Highway 96 north of Oxford. The school, which opened in 1919, graduated its last class in 1963 and was an elementary school until it closed in 1971. “My father graduated (from Oak Hill) in 1926,” Poole said. “He drove a school bus from Virgilina over those dirt roads. He was terminally ill and wanted to drive back through it.” What they found on the property was a school building in an “abused condition, vandalized, roof caving in. That sparked my interest. It sparked my attention because this was acreage that could have camping potential,” Poole said. “Quite unexpectedly, the superintendent of Granville County schools got in touch with me that they were going to sell it,” said Poole, now a retired heavy equipment dealer. “I went to the courthouse and bid $10,000” for the 16-acre site. “What would you do with it if you got it?” Poole recalled his father asking. Then someone raised the bid by five percent, the minimum required by law. “I didn’t know who was bidding against me,” Poole said. All he knew was that the bidder owned a sewing facility in an old school in Stovall and intended to run a similar operation at Oak Hill. Each beat the other’s offer until Poole’s reached $18,000, and he decided he wouldn’t “keep playing this game.” But then the other bidder withdrew. Poole also recalled his father, who passed away in September of 1973,

We decided we could take the old school building and make it work.” And work it did. The property was given to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which used the camp for its retreats and leadership programs. In 1977, the FCA opened the facility to summer campers and served 46 youth, according to Jerry Barker, now a member of the camp’s advisory board and a director of the camp from 1977-81. To accommodate campers, parts of both floors of the school building and the agriculture and home economics wing were outfitted with bunk beds, restrooms and showers. Space was provided in the wing for a camp director and a chapel. But the national FCA decided it wasn’t equipped to own the prop-

The camp served 74 youth its first season, Barker, a retired administrator at N.C. State University, said. “The more successful we became, the more pressure there was on us” to work on the building, Poole said. And a decision was made to “put our money in something that would have some future.” Four cabins were built in 1988. In 1993, local fire departments were invited to burn down the old school building to hone their firefighting skills. Even in that, Poole said, the school was “educating adults to save other people.” The camp property has grown to about 103 acres. Early on, 10 acres adjacent to the original property were purchased and graded for athletic fields. In 2003, Poole purchased 72 acres across the highway and built a 14-acre lake. In 2007, a tunnel was built under the highway to connect Continued on page 6

From humble beginnings, Camp Oak Hill now serves about 1,200 youth in seven weekly sessions in June and July and hosts another 3,000 people for retreats from August to May, Kim Patterson, the nonprofit’s executive director, said. Much of the work outfitting the camp has been accomplished by volunteers in “40 years of sweat equity,” private donations, and fees paid by campers and others who use the facilities, Patterson said. The number of cabins has grown to eight and can sleep 226, she said. In 2005, the last remaining classroom building was torn down, and the 10,000-square-foot J. Gregory Poole Jr. Activity & Fellowship Center opened. The center provides meeting and “rainy-day space” and houses offices and a camp store. The Irene Poole Dining Hall, named for Poole’s mother and seats 300, was dedicated in 1982. Food service had been provided from the high school’s cafeteria. The original high school gymnasium has been refurbished. There’s a pool, and a teacherage on the property has been con-
verted for staff residence and guest rooms. During the summer season, an eightbed infirmary is staffed by several registered nurses and is necessary to maintain the camp’s accreditation by the American Camping Association, Patterson said. Before each camping season, Granville County EMS trains counselors in lifesaving and CPR, she said. Summer camp offerings have changed with the times, too. Campers’ choices include swimming, boating, fishing (there’s another lake of about three acres), archery, BB riflery, tennis and other ball sports, zip line, low-rope course, climbing wall, horseback riding and arts and crafts. The camp’s emphasis, though, has never changed and tracks from its founder. It remains faith-based, “focusing on the principles and teaching of Jesus Christ,” said Poole, who donated the property purchases to the camp. “Thousands of boys and girls have had their lives changed. That’s the involvement I’ve always wanted to have a connection with. “My faith in Jesus Christ was birthed in my early days. I thought I might like to study the ministry, but I didn’t think I had the skill or could stand the pressure. It was better to help others follow their faith.

You seize every moment to be effective.” “Each day our mission is to make Christ known,” Patterson said. The daily schedule speaks to the mission. The camping day begins with scripture reading or meditation, she said. An assembly “to get everybody moving” follows lunch and a rest period. After dinner, campwide events can include Christianoriented songs, skits and devotion time, as well as cabin devotion time. Both Poole and Patterson point out that the 40 camp counselors hired each summer are key to the mission. “We take it very seriously with counselors in the summer,” Patterson said. “With children we want to assure we are providing the right people. Quite a lot (of the counselors) have come through our program” or other Christian programs. Counselors must have been out of high school for at least a year, submit applications with references and undergo interviews and background checks, she said. “They’ll learn a lot more from counselors at that age than from their parents,” Poole said. “Nobody owns the camp. It’s a nonprofit,” Poole said. “It was God’s plan from the beginning.”

Virtual Enterprises
Geni Slaughter, left, of the Granville Schools’ Virtual Enterprises Program, celebrates with students and Toni Anne Wheeler, right, the Granville Chamber’s membership coordinator, at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Below, VE students make a presentation . The Granville County Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the county school district to help students in a Virtual Enterprise (VE) Program at its three high schools learn the lessons of business. It’s the chamber’s first partnership with the schools, and it’s the first chamber of commerce-VE partnership in the nation, according to the coordinator of the program, Tom Cook. Cook, a teacher at Granville Central High School who is facilitator of the program there, is also the North Carolina director of New York-based Virtual Enterprise, International, which provides the VE curriculum for some 5,000 student enterprises around the world, 500 of which are in the United States. Fifteen are in North Carolina schools. A virtual enterprise is a simulated business — two businesses at each Granville school — which “students create and own and operate,” Cook said. Among the enterprises are a jewelry business, a grocery and a super hero store. Juniors and seniors accepted for the program, now in its fourth year in Granville, are expected to do market research, write business plans, solve problems, make presentations, design products, create a web site and trade with other virtual businesses, he said. Students hold positions, such as CEO, or work in sales, administration, finance, human resources and other departments. Their
businesses mirror those in the economy. VE programs typically partner with business so students can learn about career and workplace expectations. “Students are asked to get a mentor in the business community,” Cook said. “It gives our students a chance to interact with business.” The Chamber of Commerce found the unique partnership opportunity for its members at a 2013 Granville County Industry Appreciation Day at the Expo Center. Stan Winborne, Granville County’s director of high schools and career and technical training, made the introductions. “As VE began to grow and develop in our district, we knew that a critical part of future success depended on getting members of our local business community involved,” Winborne said. “We felt there was a wealth of experience, knowledge and resources just outside our schools our students could benefit from and in many ways. Of course, the logical way to do that was through our Chamber, and having such positive experiences in working with them, I really felt there would be great ways to collaborate.” “I was asked to attend with the six CEOs” of the virtual enterprises at the schools, Cook said. He and chamber officials “started talking about how to make staying here (in Granville) more

Chamber champion!
Toni Anne Wheeler had already finished one career as an educator and enjoying her retirement when an employment ad in the newspaper caught her eye. “Part-time, flexible hours, traveling around the county meeting and talking with people — that sounded like something I’d enjoy,” Wheeler thought. She showed the ad to her family and they readily agreed. Now a year later, she’s still going strong in her new role as membership coordinator for the Granville County Chamber of Commerce. “I discovered that there a number of Toni Anne Wheeler plants the seeds of membership and is excited to see recent drives still bearing fruit as more businesses people in the county and industries understand the importance of being a Chamber member. who don’t know about the chamber and what Networking events provide members it offers,” she said. “They don’t realize the chance to get the word out about their the resources, training and networking businesses and organizations. desirable” to students who might otherwise move away after high school or college. “I brought this to the chamber’s attention, and they thought it was a good idea,” Toni Anne Wheeler, the membership coordinator, said. “It’s the first time for this kind of Chamber partnership.” “It’s good in a lot of ways,” Monica Satterwhite, president of the chamber said. “They are the entrepreneurs of the future.” “Whether it be guest speakers, internships, field trips, consultants, or just opportunities for our students to interact and conduct themselves with local business professionals, we needed to reach out,” Winborne said. Students’ “businesses have mentor companies they are partnering with,” Wheeler said, and the chamber is “expanding on our positive influence on the schools. It’s all about making Granville County stronger for the future.” A recent seminar, for example, demonstrated how business mentors the students. Lorraine Yohey, facility manager at AA Self Storage in Butner, attended a seminar at J.F. Webb High School. “We observed the presentations (of business plans) and gave feedback,” she said. In exchange, students help the chamber with its membership drives. Plus, “by showing them what the chamber does and giving them an insider’s look at how the chamber operates, they’ll have a better understanding of the importance of being involved with the chamber,” Satterwhite said. “We involve them in everything we do.” VE programs were introduced to Granville following a visit by Webb representatives to a program in Tennessee. VE “started here and at South Granville, “ where Mark Jones is the teacher-facilitator, and a year later in Wake, according to Geni Slaughter, a Webb teacher who was the first facilitator of a county program. “We are fortunate to have three very dynamic and dedicated teachers for this program, each with diverse backgrounds and skill sets,” Winborne said. “One strength they all share in common is their passion for the program and their desire to seek out meaningful ways for our students to learn from the real world.” Virtual enterprise, based on a European Continued on page 20

Isaiah Hicks burst onto the J.F. Webb High School basketball scene as a skinny, 6-foot-7 freshman. His potential was readily on display and he made an immediate impact. By the time he transferred back to Webb for his junior season, he was a prep star, having committed to North Carolina before the season began. In his senior season, he scored 34 points and grabbed 30 rebounds in his final game, an overtime victory for the 3-A state championship. Webb was forecast in 2012-13 to go far. Their schedule included invitations teams can get when they’re carrying a standout like the 6-foot-9 Hicks. The Warriors played elite teams at the Chick-fil-A Classic in Columbia, S.C., the Holiday Hoops Invitational in Raleigh and the MLK Classic in Greensboro. And Webb didn’t disappoint. Hicks averaged 24 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks for the season. He played in the McDonald’s All-American game and was named the state’s best player. Webb was 27-5, losing only twice all season to N.C. High School Athletic Association teams. Both were to conference rival Chapel Hill late in the season. “We pictured this. This was our goal as a basketball team this year,” said head coach Leo Brunelli. “There were points when it didn’t look very good.” Hicks was the kind of player, and Webb had the kind of season, that are rare. Gyms were always packed. Girls games and even junior varsity boys games were often played before a full house. Fire marshals were tested. Continued on page 14

WARRIOR, from page 13 After the second loss to Chapel Hill in the league tournament title game, Webb won six straight in the playoffs. They defeated Asheboro, Southern Wayne and Chapel Hill to reach the Eastern Regionals in Fayetteville. There, they turned back Eastern Alamance and Rocky Mount. Webb beat Statesville 73-70 in overtime on a Saturday night in Reynolds Coliseum. Hicks came up big when it mattered most, putting the team on his shoulders in the fourth quarter of the 3-A regional final against Rocky Mount before the staggering numbers against Statesville. “What I really enjoyed, principal Calvin Timberlake said in the aftermath of the celebration in Reynolds, “is seeing the community come together for a cause and total support and that to me was just beautiful. Before the championship game, Webb donned its customary state playoff purple Team Meghan warm-ups, honoring Oxford’s Meghan Bunn, an 11-year-old battling brain cancer. Bunn, who had just completed a round of chemotherapy, watched the game behind the Warriors’ bench. “I’m so proud of our team, of our community and of Team Meghan, said Brunelli. The team has been honored in several ways since, including a sign at the school and a parade in downtown Oxford. They’re unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon.

Susan Ball works full-time in her efforts to bring visitors to Granville County, focusing on a variety of festivals and recreation attractions, among others.
graduate brings home Our Best Granville passion for tourism as she Attributes promotes county activities
Susan Ball caught the tourism bug back in high school. When she travelled with other foreign language students to France and Spain before her senior year at J.F. Webb, a career was born, a career that has brought her back to her hometown of Oxford and an appreciation for all things Granville County. “It was so much fun” travelling abroad, said Ball, who, since March 2013, has been the first tourism development director for the Granville County Tourism Development Authority. “In high school I decided what I wanted to do when I went to college.” A 2010 graduate of N.C. State with a degree in tourism, she interned during her junior year at the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. “I worked under the director of marketing there and took an interest in destination marketing,” Ball said.
For three years after graduation she worked as an event coordinator and as a coordinator and manager in sales for a hospitality group. And then: “My mom sent me a posting” about the Granville position. Ball’s education and experience made her a perfect fit for the hometown job. “She was the most qualified applicant and a local person,” said Eleanor Fowler of Creedmoor, chairman of the seven-member authority board. “It was a shock when we got her application. I was tickled to death.” “It was a no-brainer,” Ball said. “Why not go home and explore where I grew up and tell everyone else what Granville County has to offer.” “She has been very, very active,” Fowler said. “She’s doing everything we ever thought about doing,” including creating a tourism
web site. She said the board realized “it was time to have a full-time person. It worked out great.” Since the TDA was established in 2000, Fowler said, duties have been handled by board members and the Chamber of Commerce. Ball said she recognizes that Granville doesn’t have that one large visitor attraction, so “we picked several main areas to highlight.” The list includes annual festivals, recreation, history and culture and genealogy. While the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest (the only such event in the state), Creedmoor Music Festival, Butner Chicken Pickin’ Day, Granville Arts Festival and the Masonic Homecoming Festival draw large crowds, “lately our biggest driver has been Continued on page 16

BALL, from page 15 the ball tournaments,” Ball said. “They have been fantastic for the county.” With a new baseball park at Butner expected to increase the number of weekend tournaments, “we’re really excited for the summer,” Ball said. The park opened last fall. “We can spread the wealth,” she said, as visitors seek lodging, food and other services in the southern part of the county. Two other ball parks are located around Oxford. The Butner park will be “very helpful,” Fowler agreed. “We get a lot of people from the Durham and Raleigh areas now, and that’s the reverse of what it used to be.” While figuring their impact on the economy can’t be exact, the number of tournaments has increased from four in 2009 to 50 this year, according to Mary Caudle, director of the Oxford Parks and Recreation Department. Thirty tournaments were played in Oxford, 18 at the Granville Athletic Park and two at the new Butner park, she said. Reaching into history, Ball said, promotions will highlight the county’s agricultural heritage, the Granville County Historical Society Museum and the adjacent Harris Exhibit Hall. The museum is raising funds for a stationary exhibit that will tell the history of railroads in Granville. “We’re going to have a lot of railroad enthusiasts visiting our county,” Ball said. And the answers to genealogy questions await visitors to the North Carolina Room at the Richard Thornton Library in Oxford, she said. Beyond the county line, the new director said, “piggybacking” on events in adjacent Wake and Durham counties will offer opportunities to invite visitors to Granville. The TDA’s new web site, www.visitgranville. com, explains Granville’s proximity to the RTP area where business and university meetings are held and visiting parents plan day trips with their students. Interstate 85 “generates a lot of exposure,” Ball said. “We’re such a long county. We do see one-night stops and want to work with hotels to tell (visitors) where the restaurants are.” Granville isn’t “a tourism specific destination,” she said. “This means we really have to draw out what our best attributes are. This means focusing on the current visitors and working with our hotel owners to find out what is bringing our current visitors to the area and how we can grow each demographic.” Continued on page 20

Dedication to quality
For more than 94 years, Granville Health System (GHS) has been delivering quality health care, close to home. To meet the community’s growing needs, GHS has expanded its services throughout Granville County, offering convenient access to medical care where its patients work and live. GHS has positioned itself to accommodate the future medical needs of the community through the GHS Expansion Plan. This 32,000-square-foot construction project is the largest in the organization’s history. It includes a new Emergency Department that opened in 2013 and added nearly 15,000 square feet; an expansion of the Laboratory Department; a new, larger lobby and admissions area; and additional patient and visitor parking. Granville Health System has received a number of national awards, including the Hospital of Choice Award which names GHS as one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. The hospital was also recognized as one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures. This recognition was shared with a select group of other North Carolina hospitals such as Duke University Hospital, Rex Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital. In 2013, Granville Health System was named one of the nation’s leaders in preventing infection rates and readmissions by the Partnership for Patients, a public-private partnership working to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care. The system had zero hospital-acquired infections in 2012 in several areas including knee replacement surgical site infections, cesarean surgical site infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia.
Expansion provides major boost to Granville Health Systems
In partnership with WakeMed Health & Hospitals and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, GHS launched its innovative TeleStroke program, a form of telemedicine that provides GHS patients with enhanced in-house stroke care and 24-hour access to WakeMed as well as Wake Forest Baptist’s stroke neurologists. In 2010, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina designated the health system’s Granville Medical Center (GM) as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement. This recognition sets Granville Health System as a top provider for these orthopaedic services in the Triangle area, including Oxford, Henderson, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and the surrounding areas. GHS was given this designation because it has demonstrated a commitment to quality care, resulting in excellent overall outcomes for patients who undergo knee and hip replacement procedures at GMC. Granville Health System also received the Community Value Index five-star hospital award, placing GHS in the top 20 percent of hospitals in the country in offering financial value to the communities they serve, while reinvesting back into their facilities in order to provide for current and emerging health needs. GHS is dedicated to quality — quality physicians and staff, providing the personal attention that Granville families deserve.

Harold Sherman Adult Day Center filling a need Granville Health System created the Harold Sherman Adult Day Center in 1998 to meet the needs of adults with disabilities who require care and supervision during the day. Though the reasons for this care vary, the center strives to provide a stimulating environment designed to promote good health and overall well-being for those enrolled in the program. The center currently serves adults in Granville and surrounding counties as far west as Durham and into Warren County. The center features space for socializing as well as large groupings of recliners for a more comfortable setting. The homelike surroundings welcome participants and newcomers into a safe and caring environment designed to meet their needs. The center serves as an affordable alternative to adults who might otherwise be placed in a long term care facility or as a transitional care arrangement for people who need rehabilitation or additional support after hospitalization. There they can focus on rebuilding their strength and improving their health. The center provides nursing services, nourishing meals and snacks, daily exercise, and activities designed to meet the changing needs of the adults in their care. In addition to caring for those in their charge, the center also provides support for the programs participant’s families through respite care, caregiver education and ongoing communication regarding their loved one. A monthly Caregiver Support Group is hosted on the hospital campus for the benefit of program caregivers as well as caregivers in the community. The program is licensed to serve 26 individuals Monday through Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and includes a fully registered and licensed nursing staff. The program also has a full-time activity coordinator, program administrator and social worker on staff. Attendance is based on each participant and caregiver’s needs and can vary accordingly.

‘Vanguard Vision’
VGCC seeks to lead in growth for Granville, Triangle North VGCC has introduced a new strategic plan, the “Vanguard Vision,” to bring growth to Granville and the other counties in the Triangle North region. According to Dr. Stelfanie Williams, VGCC’s president, the plan is a “road map” that will guide the college through 2019. “We’re very proud that the Vanguard Vision was developed with input from our faculty, staff, students, trustees and members of the communities we serve in Granville, Vance, Franklin and Warren counties,” Dr. Williams said. The strategic plan includes a new mission statement: “VGCC educates, inspires, and supports a diverse community of learners to achieve professional and personal success.” College trustees also approved a new vision statement: “In partnership with our community, VGCC will lead the economic development of our region, be nationally-recognized for educational excellence, and improve our world through stewardship and sustainability.” “The mission statement describes what we have done for many years and are continuing to do,” said Williams, “while our vision statement describes what we want to see in the future.” A key concept in the vision is “partnership,” the president emphasized. “As the community’s college, we are focused on meeting the particular needs of local citizens and local businesses, and we must partner with other local organizations to carry out our mission,” Williams said. The Vanguard Vision has five areas of focus. The first is “educational excellence, from access to success,” representing both the open-door philosophy of North Carolina com-
munity colleges and VGCC’s focus on students completing their programs of study so they can start rewarding careers or continue their education. The second area is “an organizational culture of quality, cooperation, and engagement.” Dr. Williams noted that “not only do we want to make this the best place to learn, but also the best place to work.” Third, the plan envisions “a learning community of continuous improvement.” The fourth area of focus is “one college experience” for all students who attend classes at any of VGCC’s four campuses (including South Campus in Granville County) or online. Finally, the plan focuses on “institutional stewardship” by securing new resources and advancing environmentally-friendly practices. In terms of “resources,” VGCC got three big boosts in 2013 when it was awarded grants by the American Association of Community Colleges, the N.C. Community College System and the U.S. Department of Labor. The latter was the largest grant in the college’s history (worth almost $1.8 million), and will allow VGCC to develop new advanced manufacturing training programs. Granville County employers like Altec Industries and Bridgestone are collaborating with VGCC on that initiative. “As we implement our new strategic plan, Vance-Granville will continue not just to serve but, in fact, to lead the Triangle North region,” said Dr. Williams. “After all, being in the lead, or at the forefront, is the true meaning of the word ‘Vanguard.’”

Hal Muetzel of Express Employment Professionals in Oxford faced a daunting task when he came to town to start a new business seven years ago. New to the area, he didn’t know many people and he needed a way to get his name and his new business on the local radar. “The chamber has been a good resource for me to get the exposure I needed in starting a new business,” Muetzel said. Muetzel provides recruitment, staffing, human resource training, and consulting services for more than 100 clients and partners in the region. “The chamber has opened the door to small and medium-size businesses in the area, which has been a real plus.” Muetzel participates in the chamber’s human resource professionals group and other networking events. He’s also a member of the chamber’s Ambassadors program, where he’s been able to share his experiences as a newcomer to help others who are starting businesses in the area. “The chamber is a valuable resource for bringing new business and exposure to the county,” he said.
ENTERPRISES, from page 18 model of apprenticeship, started in New York City about 20 years ago, Cook said. “VEI is an academic program,” he said. “The class period is 90 minutes long and is an adopted part of the statewide curriculum” for N.C. schools. The curriculum is licensed from VEI Inc., a national nonprofit that is supported by such firms as Bank
of America, New York Life Foundation, Starbucks and Verizon Wireless. “In a lot of other classes, what’s important is the answer,” Cook said. “In VE, just like in life, it’s what questions do I need to ask to discover the best result.” Students are evaluated on several levels, Cook said. In addition to participation in the VE economy and evaluation by “supe-
While advertising and stocking travel stops across the Southeast with printed material have their roles, Ball said social media are “extremely important. Visitors and consumers are always looking for the quickest way possible to get information. Social media is the quickest way to do that. It offers an outlet to engage visitors before they even begin planning a trip.” Visitor spending is on a fast track, too. According to the state Department of Commerce, visitors spent nearly $43 million in Granville in 2012, an increase of 5.1 percent over the previous year, and supported 280 jobs related to tourism. Tourism development spending is solely supported by a six percent occupancy tax on the county’s 415 hotel rooms. The tax generates about $200,000 a year. Ball said that an increase in traffic through the state and the number of amateur weekend sporting events likely drove the increase. As for the professional driving the effort: “Susan Ball was instrumental in helping us advertise throughout the entire state,” Julia Overton, founder of the hot sauce contest and interim director of the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corp., said. Visitors were “encouraged to stay, stroll, dine and shop with us. It helped the event to be a success.” riors” (student bosses), “the largest portion of their ‘grade’ is the staff evaluation process and their performance on tasks and job responsibilities. This makes VEI a very real-life simulation of business practices,” Cook said. VE is “an opportunity for students to experiment in a real lab setting,” School Supt. Tim Farley said, “and translate that into a lot of self-confidence.”
