MPMC offers big city healthcare for women While the larger cities of the nearby Research Triangle area may offer many services and products not available in the local Tri-County area, high quality health care for women is not among the missing options. Maria Parham Medical Center offers an excellent selection of minimally invasive gynecological services and advanced technology procedures to meet the health care needs of women — without the need for a trip to the big city. “I don’t think a lot of people realize that we have many of the minimally invasive procedures for women available right here at Maria Parham,” said Dr. Netasha McLawhorn, chief of staff for the medical center and a physician with Premier Women’s Health in Henderson. “With our location in a smaller community, people often think you have to go Raleigh or Duke to have procedures done when we can do essentially the same thing here.” When it comes to surgical procedures, “minimally invasive” is what patients are looking for, said Dr. McLawhorn. Also termed laparoscopic procedures, Dr. McLawhorn said these new approaches to traditional surgery

LADIES, from page three result in less scarring and less pain – not to mention quicker recovery times. At Maria Parham, 80-90 percent of all hysterectomies were performed laparoscopically in 2010. A laparoscopic hysterectomy is done by inserting a laparoscope and surgical instruments through several small abdominal incisions. The uterus is removed in small pieces through one of the incisions. In some cases, the cervix is left intact. This type of procedure usually causes minimal blood loss and pain, said Dr. McLawhorn, and the hospital stay is shorter than for total abdominal surgery. Most women can return to normal activity a week or two afterward. With the more traditional abdominal hysterectomy, a much larger abdominal incision is made, requiring a 3-4 day hospital stay and 4-6 weeks of recovery. The latter procedure is still the most common way hysterectomies are performed in most parts of the United States, Dr. McLawhorn added. Another common minimally invasive proce- Dr. Netasha McLawhorn speaks with a patient at her Premier Women’s Health office in Henderson. Hospital’s facilities, services show significant growth in past 85 years From 27 beds in 1926 to its current capacity of 102, Maria Parham Medical Center has expanded services and opportunities in Vance County and the region. Since its creation 85 years ago, the hospital’s history has been punctuated by several major expansion efforts. At its original location on South Chestnut Street in Henderson, the hospital grew from 27 beds to 44 beds to 75 beds. By the 1960s, more space was needed to meet the needs of the community. The Board of Trustees elected to make a major expansion by building a new 100-bed facility. The heirs of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Brodie donated a 40-acre tract of former dairy land west of Henderson. The new hospital opened on that site on Nov. 14, 1965. Additional space and efficiency were added in 1978 and 1984. Each addition was named to

Helping us see more clearly Dr. Daniel Bernstein’s approach to life and to his medical practice is illustrated on the walls of his office at Four County Eye Associates. While waiting for their eyes to be dilated, patients can check out cartoons about medical situations and plaques documenting the many awards Bernstein has received from various organizations, such as Prevent Blindness and B’nai B’rith. Long hours and dedication to his patients have not diminished his sense of humor or commitment to community service. Among the changes he has seen in the local medical scene since 1976, when he established his practice, are two in which he played a leading role. Thirty-five years ago, cataract surgery was an in-patient procedure. It is now routinely performed on an outpatient basis. A second innovation was the establishment of a physician assistant program at Maria Parham Medical Center.

The medical center, known then as Maria Parham Hospital, began its service to the community in 1926 from its initial location on South Chestnut Street in Henderson, shown in the top photograph. A new facility was completed on Ruin Creek Road in 1965, shown above at a memorial for the victims of 9/11 in 2001. At left, the new patient tower, which opened in 2006, heralds a new day for Maria Parham Medial Center.

The most recent expansion to the medical center took place between 2003 and 2006, when a $58 million patient tower was constructed and patient-care areas were renovated. The expansion includes more private rooms and larger rooms. The patient facilities in the old structure were renovated to match the style of the new section, brightening and modernizing the area, Tucker said. Another major change is on the horizon. In February 2011 the board of directors approved and signed a memorandum of understanding to form a partnership with Duke University Health System Inc. and LifePoint Hospitals. The MOU is non-binding but authorizes the parties to move ahead with a negotiation process, leading to a formal agreement. Tucker said, “We are very excited about the tremendous benefits this proposed partnership offers our employees, medical staff and community.” MPMC offers a wide range of services and the latest technology to meet the needs of the community. As the second largest employer in Vance County with approximately 750 employees, the medical center is a major contributor to the economic health of the region.

A Love for People ... “I believe in what the hospital gives back to the community. I like having a connection with the patients I care for.”
Kathy Thomas
loves taking care of her neighbors When Kathy Thomas’ kindergarten teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, the answer was always the same. “I always wanted to be a nurse. I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else.” Thomas grew up in the Bobbitt community on her parents’ hog farm. Later, her family ran Beckham’s Barbecue, a local restaurant, for many years. She headed straight for East Carolina University after graduating high school and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She had already been working as a nursing assistant at Maria Parham Medical Center while in school, and the hospital had awarded her a nursing scholarship to help pay for her education. She returned to the hospital in 1995 and has been working here as a nurse ever since. Thomas is currently the manager of wound care services for the hospital. She returned to school at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., in 1996 to earn certification in wound management, ostomy care and incontinence care. She put her new skills to work first as a wound care specialist for

hospitalized patients, then expanded out to treat patients who were being cared for by the hospital’s home health nurses. Several years ago, the hospital opened its outpatient wound care clinic, which now operates four days a week. “I believe in what the hospital gives back to the community,” said Thomas. “I like having a connection with the patients I care for. I
often know their families or loved ones and that makes them feel more secure. We try to treat everyone like they’re our next of kin.” Because most of her patients are older, traveling to Raleigh or Durham for care can be difficult. “If a patient requires more than we can offer, I don’t hesitate to send them where they need to go to get the care they need. But I know
that traveling out of town is a big concern for many of our patients and I always assure them we’ll be right here for them when they get back.” Thomas feels her role is that of a servant, taking care of her neighbors. “I don’t know a better population to serve than the people you’re going to live around and go to church with.”

After starting a family, Cindy Faulkner returned to nursing school at Vance-Graville Community College. Now the vice president of patient care services at MPMC, she earned her bachelor’s degree at N.C. Central University and her master’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A Love for Nursing Cindy Faulkner
Even as a young girl, Cindy Faulkner loved to read her mom’s nursing books and magazines. “I think I always knew I wanted to be a nurse like her,” Faulkner said. She headed off to nursing school after graduating from high school in Henderson in 1978, but ended up delaying her pursuit of a nursing degree to marry and start a family. Her own family had moved to Henderson when she was 11, and her husband had grown up here, so they settled in Henderson to start their life together. Faulkner worked at Maria Parham Medical Center in non-nursing roles for several years, but headed back to Vance-Granville Community College in 1985 to resume her nurse’s training. The hospital had offered her a scholarship, and she graduated with an associate’s degree in nursing in 1988. Except for a short stint working in Raleigh,
Faulkner. “When I worked in Raleigh, I never saw my patients again after they were discharged. I didn’t really know them or their families. Here, you go to church together, you see each other in the grocery store, your kids play together. You really are taking care of your neighbors. I like knowing that I’m taking care of people from my Faulkner was employed as a staff nurse at Maria own community.” Parham until 1999, when she accepted the The primary reason a patient is admitted to position of manager of the Women and Infants the hospital is because they need nursing care, Department.
