Much to do on Virginia side of Kerr Lake N
BY DAVID IRVINE DISPATCH STAFF
orth Carolinians may forget that much of Kerr Lake lies in Virginia. In that state, it is often referred to as Buggs Island Lake: same water, different name. By whichever name, the lake offers many opportunities for sport and recreation. Many of the events of the Clarksville Lake Country Chamber of Commerce revolve around the city’s location on the water. “Just having the lake brings in visitors,” said Sheila Cuykendall, executive director of the chamber. “The water is our biggest asset.” The major event of the summer is the annual Virginia Lake Festival, which will take place this year July 17 to July 19. Visitors can enjoy arts and crafts, food, music, hot air balloons, sand sculpture, nighttime fishing, an antique car show and competition for the title of Lakefest Idol. The climax of the festival will be the traditional “Gathering Of The Boats” and fireworks show July 19. Two public parks on the lake are maintained by the State of Virginia. Occoneechee State Park, named for the Native American tribe that once inhabited the area, is the largest recreation area in Virginia’s part of the lake. Assistant Park Manager Robert Kimbreo said the park features

marina. A bunkhouse, two lodges, 13 cabins and numerous campsites are available for overnight stays. “We have 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding,” Kimbreo said. A museum traces the history of the Occoneechee people and displays artifacts taken from digs on sites in the park. Staunton River State Park — seven miles upstream from Clarksville — features cabins, a campground, a swimming pool, picnic shelters, three playgrounds, tennis and volleyball courts, and several boat launches. Wildlife enthusiasts can get hands-on experience at the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the center is
located at 5164 Buggs Island Road, Boydton, Virginia. Visitors can learn about birds and mammals that inhabit the area or take pictures in the butterfly garden. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Whether fishing in North Carolina or Virginia waters, anglers will find that the lake is rich with bass, catfish, crappie, stripers and perch. A fishing license is required, but an agreement between the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission recognizes fishing licenses from both states.

parklers may seem like mild pyrotechnics for any July Four th celebration. But they can reach temperatures up to 1,200 degrees, according to Jon Juntunen, fire and life safety educator at the Henderson Fire Depar tment. “Safe fireworks just don’t exist,” he said. “When things go wrong with fireworks, they go ver y badly wrong.” Pyrotechnics, or fireworks, are prohibited in Nor th Carolina — except for explosive caps, glowworms, trick noisemakers and small sparklers. Legal fireworks can be purchased by anyone 16 and older. Lt. Alan Hedgepeth of the Henderson Police Depar tment said he encourages ever yone to attend a fireworks display held by professionals and not put their personal safety at risk. Still, he knows there are always some people who want to enjoy them at the home. Juntunen said families with private fireworks displays should never allow young children to handle them. “Fireworks should always be ignited away from houses and flammable materials in clear area,” he said. “They should light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting it.” Setting of f fireworks is not the only activity that people should be cautious about, however. Br yce Fleming, Kerr Lake state recreation area superintendent, said his staf f deals with several heat-related emergencies ever y year. “With as hot as it’s been, people need to be aware of the heat and aware of their limitations — which is dif ferent for ever y person,” he said. He said lake-goers should bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

David Reese picks out a load of fireworks from a stand last July in preparation for a celebration for family and friends at his home. Pyrotechnics, or fireworks, are prohibited in North Carolina — except for explosive caps, glow worms, trick noise-makers and small sparklers. Legal fireworks can be purchased by anyone 16 and older. State law requires children younger than 13 to wear an appropriate life jacket whenever they are on a boat moving in the water. It must be U.S. Coast Guard approved and be a proper fit, with youth sizes corresponding to weight. Boaters are also required to wear proper life jackets while being towed. Fleming said there are several locations along Kerr Lake where visitors can borrow communal life jackets. Contact the writer at smansur@ hendersondispatch.com.
The following tips provided by Safe Kids:
• The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals. If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area. • Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks. • Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass. • Be prepared for an accident or injury • Always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly. • If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. • If an eye injury occurs, don’t allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage.

Take care to avoid heat-related illnesses By DANIELLE HAIRSTON Dispatch Staff

unscreen, hydration and shade are key components of Independence Day celebrations this year. According to the Climate Office of North Carolina, past holiday temperatures have averaged between 85 to 92 degrees in Vance County. Temperatures have already reached the mid-90s this summer. Matthew Bitner, medical director of emergency medicine at Maria Parham Medical Center, said he sees more heat-related illness around this time, but proactively tackling the excessive heat can help most avoid trips to the emergency room. “You don’t want to wait until somebody has a heat stroke,” he said. “You want to catch heat illnesses early.” He said people should schedule outdoor activities for the earlier and latter parts of the day in shady areas. They should also replace alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body, with water and sports drinks interchangeably. “If you consume large volumes of water only, you can have problems with that because it doesn’t have the electrolytes that sports drinks do,” Bitner said. He said those prone to heat-related illnesses are young children and elders, though for different reasons. Young people have high body-surface ratios. Those who are older struggle to regulate their body temperatures. Similar symptoms, however — skin redness, nausea, Ginger Morris sprays sunscreen on her daughter Berketrouble breathing, fast heart-rates, muscle cramps and ley at Satterwhite Point Recreation Area at Kerr Lake. difficulties walking — are found in most, he said. Prepare for traffic around the lake S
By Vanessa Shortley Dispatch Staff
ome 25,000 people are expected to flock to Vance County’s portion of Kerr Lake this weekend to take part in Independence Day festivities. Many will crowd into the lake’s facilities, said Nancy Wilson, Vance County tourism director. “It’ll be a park-full,” she said. “All the campgrounds will be full. They usually are.” One of the biggest draws tends to be the festival at Satterwhite Point, which includes vendors, food and information and culminates in a fireworks display — held this year Saturday, July 5. But that means a lot of traffic. State park rangers, highway patrolmen and volunteers alike work to ensure people get into and out of Satterwhite as quickly as possible; in addition, park maintenance staff set up the parking lots that allow drivers to quickly find a space. Bryce Fleming, superintendent of Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, said people should come early if they want to make sure they get into the park. “In past years, we’ve recommended that if you got here before 6, you should have a pretty decent parking spot, but it really all depends on when the crowds really start coming,” he said. “If they show up earlier, we fill up earlier.” And when the park’s full, that’s it; Fleming said once they hit capacity, rangers will start sending people away down Anderson Creek Road. But they try to fit in as many as they safely can. Once it starts getting full, they stop traffic to allow those already in the park to find a spot. Working with the State Highway Patrol, they’ll send in groups of cars until there’s no room left. This can turn Satterwhite Point Road into a parking lot.
MARK DOLEJS / Dispatch file photo
Late afternoon crowds cool off in Kerr Lake during last year’s Independence Day weekend celebration. If you plan on visiting Satterwhite Point on July 5 for this year’s celebration, make plans to arrive early to beat the long line of traffic waiting to get into the park. “There’s a good chance they’re going to be parked on Satterwhite Point Road from Anderson Creek Road out toward the interstate,” Fleming said. “There was a long line of folks waiting last year after about 7 p.m. or so.” Fleming recommended people go to the pier at Bullocksville to see the fireworks if they couldn’t get into Satterwhite Point or just want to avoid the traffic. Leaving in the evening can be tricky, too. Fleming said people should bring flashlights so they can make their way safely back to their vehicles. On the way out, State Highway Patrol Sgt. J.R. Creech said they normally do a lane reversal to allow as much traffic to flow out of the park as quickly as possible. He said drivers should try to stay with the group and use both lanes; officers will indicate when normal traffic patterns resume. Regardless, Fleming said people should be prepared to wait. “People need to be patient,” he said. “Satterwhite Point Road is the only way in and out of there. Everybody’s got to come out on Satterwhite Point Road. It can take about an hour.”

Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

Fireworks have colorful history
Fireworks can be traced back to ancient China.
I
ndependence Day celebrations are marked by many spectacles. But few can garner the “oohs and aahs” of a good fireworks display. Summer is a time of year when the resonating booms and bright spills of color that dot the night sky are quite common. Fireworks, which can be traced back thousands of years, have an interesting history. Many historians believe fireworks originated in ancient China as early as 200 B.C. It is thought that early fireworks were not the gunpowder-filled explosives of today, but something made from bamboo, a material native to China. Chunks of bamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, may have been tossed onto a fire as fuel. The rods would blacken, but eventually explode in the fire, causing a loud, frightening noise. This noise was a result of trapped air and sap inside of the bamboo rods heating and expanding until the bamboo exploded under the pressure. The exploding bamboo was used to ward off animals, other people and evil spirits. Chinese alchemists eventually stumbled on a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixing together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sulfur, and other ingredients. This powder was packed inside of hollow bamboo rods to produce an even bigger bang. Soon paper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fireworks were used for more than just scaring away spirits, as they were routinely included in special celebrations and even deployed during military
engagements. Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around the world. Italians had been fascinated with fireworks ever since the explorer Marco Polo brought back firecrackers from Asia in 1292. During the Renaissance in Europe, the Italians began to develop fireworks into a true art form. Since this was a period of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created. “Firemasters” were fireworks experts in medieval England. They worked with “green men,” who wore caps of leaves to
protect themselves from raining sparks from the fireworks. In 1758, the Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d’Incarville, living in Beijing, wrote to the Paris Academy of Sciences about the methods and composition of fireworks, including how to make many types of Chinese fireworks. The world remains fascinated by fireworks even now. Fireworks displays have grown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters. Various powders and chemicals
mixed together produce a rainbow display of colors and aerial tricks that would likely have shocked the earliest firework creators. Not forgetting its origins, China continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. Safety experts recommend the public leave fireworks to the professionals and sit back and relax during awe-inspiring pyrotechnic displays. As the United States and Canada prepare for their respective Independence Day celebrations, flashy fireworks displays are bound to be part of the festivities.

Fireworks will illuminate the night sky, the rich smell of barbecue will be in the air, and the country will be awash in red, white and blue splendor. Chances are the swelling melody of “The Star Spangled Banner” will be broadcast over the radio and on various firework display telecasts. A poem is born
America began its fight for independence from Great Britain in 1775, and the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 to identify the 13 colonies that succeeded in winning their independence from Britain. However, the battles with Britain stretched on. Fights over territories kept disputes between the British Empire and the newly formed United States raging on, and it was during one such fight, and not during the Revolutionar y War as some may think, that “The Star Spangled Banner” was written. The War of 1812 was declared by the United States to set right some of the issues that were not resolved after the Revolutionar y War. Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer at the time of this war, negotiating for the release of an American hostage being held by the British. Although Key won the hostage’s release, he was not able to leave the British fleet where the negotiations took place until the British completed their attack on Baltimore. Key witnessed the British fier y bombs on Ft. McHenr y at Chesapeake Bay. Just before dawn on the morning of September 14, 1814, Key was said to have noticed a huge American flag still waving above Ft.
McHenr y in defiance to the British attack. This imager y helped inspire the words of a poem that eventually would become the national anthem. Key penned the poem on the back of a letter he held in his pocket. After the battle was over and Key was released, he completed the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was staying. The poem was titled, “Defense of Fort M’Henr y.” The poem was put to music to fit the popular melody “The Anacreonic Song” by English composer John Stafford Smith. Key’s brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, anonymously made the first printing of the lyrics to the melody, and the song was printed in two newspapers. The song quickly became popular, and soon after, Thomas Carr of the Carr Music Store in Baltimore, Mar yland published the words and music under a new title, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Preventing carbon monoxide poisoning on boats G
as-powered boat engines produce carbon monoxide, or CO, a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can prove fatal to humans. People exposed to high concentrations of CO over a short period of time can die from that exposure, as can people exposed to lower concentrations of CO over a longer period of time. No one gets on a boat expecting to be poisoned by CO. But CO can build up on a boat rather quickly, and because it has no color, odor or taste, boaters and their passengers may be inhaling CO without knowing it. To protect themselves from CO poisoning, those who plan to go boating should learn to recognize the symptoms of CO exposure and react to their presence as quickly as possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common symptoms of CO exposure and poisoning include: • headache • dizziness • weakness • nausea • vomiting • chest pain • confusion Many of the symptoms of CO poisoning are also indicative of seasickness, so boaters and their passengers exhibiting any of the aforementioned symptoms should consider that they might be suffering from seasickness, which is not nearly as risky to a person’s overall health as COpoisoning.
Boat owners must take steps to protect themselves and their passengers from exposure to carbon monoxide. In addition to learning about CO, boat owners should take steps to prevent CO poisoning on their boats. At the onset of each boating season and before each trip, inspect your boat’s CO detector to make sure it is working properly. When it is, the detector will alert boat owners and their passengers to elevated levels of CO in the cabin. Boat owners should keep a brand new backup detector on their boat so they won’t have to cancel a trip should they arrive at their boat only to find out their existing detector is not functioning properly. In addition to installing and maintaining your
CO detector, the CDC recommends the following preventive measures to reduce you and your passengers’ risk of CO poisoning. • Swim and play away from areas where engines vent their exhaust. • Keep a watchful eye on children when they play on rear swim decks or water platforms. • Do not block exhaust outlets. When such outlets are blocked, CO can build up in the cabin and the cockpit. • Do not dock or anchor within 20 feet of another boat that is running an engine or generator because exhaust from nearby
vessels can send CO into the boat’s cabin or cockpit. Preventing CO exposure and poisoning also involves teaching passengers to recognize its symptoms. It’s easy for boaters to get distracted when hosting passengers on their boats, so make sure passengers know how to recognize potential CO issues. Keep a list of exposure symptoms in an accessible common area on your boat so passengers can familiarize themselves and recognize any potential problems that might arise. A case of CO poisoning can quickly turn a relaxing day on the
boat into an emergency situation. Boat owners owe it to themselves and their passengers to take
preventive measures to ensure no one is exposed to or poisoned by CO while out on the water.

Safety tips for outdoor meals and entertainment
T
he warm weather is finally here, so it’s time to get ready for that first backyard barbecue bash. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these important tips for a safe, seamless summer soiree — tr y saying that three times quickly!
Outdoor gas barbecues
• Before firing up the grill for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust build-up. Clean or replace any blocked parts with certified replacement parts (or have a licensed technician do it). • Check for cracked, brittle or leaking hoses by applying a 50/50 solution of soap and water to hoses and fittings. Turn on the main gas or propane valve while leaving burners off. Any leaks will show up as bubbles. Replace any damaged hoses or fittings. • Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified ever y 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Do not use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, replace your tank. • Keep grills and barbecues away from combustible materials such as fences, trees, buildings, awnings and carports.
• No matter how hard it’s raining, never use a barbecue in a garage.
Decorative lighting
• It’s time to remove the holiday lights. These lights are designed to be temporar y and can be a fire hazard if left out too long. • When installing decorative lighting on patios or along walkways, inspect the packaging
