Long hiatus to end soon for EverStart at Kerr Lake
R
eturning to Kerr Lake, North Carolina, for the first time since 2008, this year’s EverStart Northern Division Bass Tournament on Kerr Lake June 14-16 will be the area’s largest tournament of 2012. Anglers from all over the east coast will begin arriving in early June to prepare to take their shot at the top prizes. The middle of June is one of the best times of the year to catch these fish on Kerr Lake, as the bass will have recuperated from the spring spawn and rearing of their young. They will be hungry and ready to fill up on shad, blue herring, and crawfish, so anglers will be focusing their efforts on mimicking those food sources with artificial lures to catch the winning stringers. These tournaments last for three days, with the full field of anglers competing on Days 1 and 2. Only the top 25 anglers will make the cut to compete on the final day. Winners are determined by the total weight
of bass caught from all three days, with each day’s catch consisting of a five-fish limit of either largemouth or smallmouth bass. Each must measure at least 14 inches long. Typical weights at this time of year recently are around 14-15 pounds per day, so a two-day Walt total near 30 pounds Bowen On the Water will likely be needed Special to have a chance at fishing on the last day for the top spot. The first place finishing professional fisherman (or woman) will pocket $35,000, plus a brand new Ranger Bass boat with a 200 HP engine, if they are competing from a Ranger boat during the tournament. Alongside the professionals, co-anglers fish from the back
of the boats, competing against all the other co-anglers. The co-anglers are randomly paired each day with a professional, and the co-angler winner is chosen at the end of Day 2 of competition. The co-anglers first place prize consists of $5,000 cash, as well as a Ranger Bass boat with a 90 HP engine, if they are a qualified registered Ranger Boat owner. Anglers will be blasting off from the Nutbush Park ramp daily at 6 a.m., with the Day 1 and 2 weigh-ins at 2 p.m. at the Nutbush Park North facility. The final weigh-in on Day 3 will be take place at 3 p.m. at Wal-Mart No. 2256, 200 North Cooper Road, Henderson. Most recently conducted on Kerr Lake in September of 2008, this event should draw at least 300 anglers between the professionals and coanglers, so you can count on seeing some exciting take offs and thrilling weigh-ins from the new tournament facility recently dedicated at the

Ryan Daniel to hit Satterwhite Point Park stage July 7 By MARTIN FISHER Daily Dispatch Writer
The Vance County Department of Tourism’s annual celebration of Independence Day, scheduled this year for July 7 at the Satterwhite Point park location, will feature a newcomer in the world of country-style patriotic, party and romancethemed music: Ryan Daniel, and his band. Vance County Tourism Director Nancy Wilson said that grabbing Daniel and band was a stroke of providence because as a North Carolina perform-
er, based in Gastonia, and as an engaging personality, he offers a warm and friendly brand of leadership for patriotic focus. A look into Daniel's background reveals why: as a United States Air Force performer, he was selected to join the elite male quartet musical touring group, "Tops in Blue," as a featured vocalist. He performed many solos for the show that included intricate a-cappella pieces. He also performed the demanding choreography. The Air Force had the group on tour all over the world,
entertaining an estimated 250,000 troops plus civilians. His style, drawing from Garth Brooks, includes an intentional focus on connecting with his audiences, to make everyone feel like they are part of a true celebration that reaches beyond mere stand-andwatch performance. "When I perform a song, I really get into it. I want the audience to feel what I'm feeling," Daniel said. "Reaching out to your audience with your voice and your emotions and just being plain buck wild — I think Garth does
that better than anyone else." Wilson said she is looking forward to a great, family-centered day that with a personality and a band like Daniel's truly highlights what is best about freedom and America. "That's why I chose him," she said. "I found he does the patriotic music. It will be great for a family day, for people to come out and celebrate the day with the cookouts and the music, and of course the fireworks at the end." Satterwhite Point has been the holiday destina-
tion spot for many families in past years, with Vance County's tourism folks offering a Saturday venue this year for a weekend-centered commemoration of America's most historical day. According to prior comments by Park Ranger Charles Shelton, it is the busiest weekend of the year at the lake. “We have had a good group of folks out here this weekend,” Shelton said after the event last year. “The fireworks went great on Saturday, with a larger crowd than normal.”
Responses from those who enjoyed the holiday last year helps to illustrate what the day means to so many. “It is a great opportunity to be with the family and get into the water,” said 55-year-old Marion Davis, a Henderson resident and Vietnam War veteran of the United States Army. “Seeing so many people here makes us feel like holidays still exist. We spend valuable time with each other and get to eat good food. It is a great time.” Along with his wife, grandson, niece, nephews

and friends, Davis recalled why Independence Day means so much to him. “I love to celebrate the freedom we all are blessed with, being free of many adversities in life,” Davis said. “Being able to come back from war to a country that is free, where people died for us to have that right. There is no place I would rather be.” “This is our first year coming here,” Granville County resident Paul Harris said. “Everything is so nice out here and we are glad we came. The kids are having a great time.” “It is a tradition for a lot of families to come here for July 4,” said 39-year-old Donald Harris, lifelong Henderson resident. “We love to come out here and grill and just spend time with the family.” According to Shelton,

"We just always want people to come, get together, and to honor what the holiday is really all about: patriotism, freedom and honoring our veterans also," Wilson said. Food and drinks, as well as T-shirts and glow sticks, will be on sale. Wilson added that the fireworks display, priced at $9,000 last year, is an appropriate end to the day, as it gets dark and they sound upon the lake. “When they’re displayed over the water, it is always pretty,” she said. “With all the boats on the water, too, it’s really a sight to see.” The Ryan Daniel concert is one of two
sponsored by the Vance County Tourism Department in 2012, with the second slated for Oct. 20, during the daytime Saturday portion of Show, Shine, Shag and Dine, featuring The Seaside Band. More about Daniel Daniel served in the Air Force for more than nine years, seeing deployment to the Middle East several times. His opportunity with touring led to him meeting producer and "Tops in Blue" music director Barry Best. He left the military in August of 2005, to pursue his musical dreams. Like many starting artists, he took odd jobs, including work at a speed shop, as a karaoke jockey, and performing in a local production of "Best Little Whore House in Texas." A break came in the

summer of 2007 during a mini-tour of military installations, starting with Florida at Patrick Air Force Base, and through contacts on the way, a performance at Shades of Green, the military resort at Disney World. After his first performance there, he was asked to do an encore for military families. Daniel then performed at several more bases in Florida before wrapping up the tour in Georgia at Moody and Robins Air Force bases. In addtion, he teamed up with Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola to perform at several grand openings of their stores. He also performed throughout North Carolina and Tennessee.
Daniel and his band made it to the finals at the Bodog Music 2008 "Battle of the Bands" in Nashville, Tenn., the only country music act to do so, out of 10,000 bands worldwide that were a part of the competition. Through 2009, Daniel worked to finish his first full-length album, “Love Life and Memories, “now available for purchase through his website, ryandaniel.org. In 2011, Daniel was a Carolina Music Award nominee, male country artist of the year, and is a Randy Travis Award nominee for best country male vocalist. Nutbush ramps facility:
Possible ‘major’ factor in luring tourneys to area By KELLEN HOLTZMAN Dispatch Sports Editor
The new Nutbush Bridge boating access area boasts four new boat ramps, a courtesy dock, a 600-square foot restroom building and parking for 165 vehicles, including 135 for boat trailers. Add in separate docking and event space for fishing tournaments and Nutbush could play an integral role in attracting top-level fishing events to Kerr Lake again. “In order to compete with other states and other lakes, we had to have a facility like that,” said Walt Bowen, fishing enthusiast and The Daily Dispatch’s “On the Water” weekly columnist. Bowen, born and raised in Vance County, still has two houses in the county limits, including one at Kerr Lake. The Walnut Cove resident competes in the FLW Bass Fishing League, a 24-division league devoted to weekend anglers. Top winners in the BFL can advance to the EverStart series and the top-tier FLW Tour. According to Bowen, the top levels of FLW are now about on par with that of the Bassmaster Classic and Elite series. FLW events are televised on the NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) while Bassmaster
is contracted with ESPN and the Outdoor Channel. Kerr Lake regularly attracts Bassmaster Weekend Series events, but a major tournament hasn’t taken place at Kerr Lake since 1998, Bowen said. FLW’s EverStart will stop at Kerr Lake in June for the first time in four years. Bowen believes no lake
in the eastern part of the state has better facilities for major fishing tournaments now than Kerr Lake. He said Lake Norman has similar amenities, and has been able to attract the top tourneys. In Bassmaster Magazine’s latest top-100 bass lakes list, released in April, Kerr Lake came in
at No. 81. Bowen said 1215 years ago, Kerr Lake ranked in the top-10 on that same list. A major factor in the ranking drop has been the largemouth bass virus that led to a major decline in not only the bass population, but also the size of the fish. Bowen said the virus is gone and the population
is about 90 percent back. “Maybe before too long we can be back in the top-10 again,” he said. “We’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing, like this Everstart tournament coming in June. We have to keep bringing those tournaments to the lake and bring some of the toplevel tournaments.” One major selling point
for Kerr is the sheer size of it. “It’s a huge lake,” Bowen said. “There’s plenty of places to fish, 835 miles of shoreline I think it is. So that’s one of the things you always hear that people like. Even with a lot of boats out there fishing, you don’t get crowded.” Please see ‘MAJOR’, page 13

shop at tackle shops. They pay ramp fees to launch their boats. They buy outof-state fishing licenses that generates revenue for the state.” Bowen estimated that each angler is likely to spend at least $1,0001,500 during a stay. One missing link for Vance County could be more convenient hotel accommodations. “We would benefit from motels that cater to fishing, have parking and electrical hook-ups,” said Bowen. “That’s what Henderson needs too, safe accommodations that cater to fishing.” When Lewis Ledford,
director of the state’s Division of Parks and Recreation, spoke at the dedication of the new Nutbush Bridge boating access area earlier this month, he said the project helps make Kerr Lake a “destination area.” Area anglers like Bowen hope it’s only a matter of time before the lake again becomes a destination of choice for top-shelf fishing tournaments. “Now that we’ve got the top-level facilities, maybe we can get the toplevel tournaments,” said Bowen.

Warren County: carving out its own niche on Kerr Lake BY DAVID IRVINE Daily Dispatch Writer
Of the 800 miles of the Kerr Lake shoreline, only a small portion of it lies within Warren County. But it offers residents as well as visitors opportunities to enjoy boating, fishing, camping and all the other pleasures associated with lake life. Kimball Point Recreation Area, the state park serving that part of Kerr Lake, lies six miles northwest of I-85, accessible from Exit 223 or Exit 226. Nearby are homeowners and businesses that have been attracted to the lake
and what it offers. John and Angela Hyson live on neighboring Keats Road. The Hysons and their daughter, Andrea Ferguson, are turning their adjoining properties into a destination for school groups and church activities. The facility will have year-round camp sites, cabins to rent, a greenhouse and a farm tour with animals. “There’s one place we call ‘eagle point,’ We have our own resident eagle there,” said Ferguson.She said that, although their property faces Kerr Lake, the recreation area is important to them. “We come
down to Kimball Point for swimming and picnicking. We have 26 campers here, and they launch their boats at Kimball Point.” Down the road toward Drewry, Buchanan’s Store serves both year-round residents and seasonal visitors. Johnny Fleming waited on customers as he talked about the importance of the lake to his business. “The park keeps us going,” he said. “If we don’t get (business) in the summer, it’s hard to stay here.” The store has groceries and other needs of year-round residents, but
its shelves display fishing and camping supplies and hardware that would be of particular interest to visitors to the lake. Fleming said he has customers from all three of the nearby recreation areas — Bullocksville and County Line as well as Kimball Point. Gabe Cumming, director of Economic Development for Warren County, said, “Kimball Point is tremendously popular. We have a lot of visitors coming (to Kerr Lake) for a short duration. The infrastructure is fairly limited. Our strategy is to develop more businesses:
for example, more accommodations, more dining options, more activities. And it’s a great place to observe wildlife — loons, otters, great blue herons.” He said the lake with its parks is important for the local economy. That point was reinforced by Lewis Ledford, director of the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. “State parks make a strong contribution to North Carolina’s tourism economy as well as to the economies of local communities in which they’re located,” Ledford said. The fishing must be good. Last summer, Walt
Bowen, who contributes the “On the Water” column to The Daily Dispatch, reported that an 80-pound catfish was caught near Kimball Point. Kimball Point offers a variety of amenities, including tent sites, picnic area, electric hookup, swimming, rest rooms, sanitary dump station, public telephone, fishing, boating, playground, dock, boat ramp and pavilion. Where lake travelers find ‘whatever they need’ By WES PLATT DISPATCH NEWS EDITOR
When anglers and campers on Kerr Lake need bait and other supplies, they don’t need to look much farther than the 12-mile stretch along N.C. Highway 39, north of Interstate 85. At several strategic points en route to various campgrounds and boat ramps, one can find stores that sell gas, red worms and nightcrawlers. Hungry? They can help with that too. Rex and June Perkinson have had R.J.’s Country Store and Deli for about six years. It’s right at the turnoff toward Hibernia. “We’ve got fishing licenses, hunting licenses, maps to all the campgrounds, wi-fi, high-test gas, boat sheds
for storage,” Rex Perkinson said. “Our deli has a counter where we make sub sandwiches, chicken wings, hamburgers. Our chili and slaw are homemade.” They offer more kinds of bait too, such as squid, shrimp and chicken livers. He sees customers come into the store from throughout North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and many from West Virginia. “The lake draws a good crowd,” he said. “It’s a nice, clean place to camp and fish. Nice lake.” Terry Marrow agrees. He stocks and dips minnows for bait at the busy 39 Pit Stop near the turnoff to Nutbush. The shop’s been there for about 60 years, he said, since before Kerr Lake actually existed.
“We see a lot of people come through,” Marrow said. “We give them minnows, worms, fishing
equipment. Whatever they need.” Other stores along the Highway 39 route include
Morgan Road and M&J’s Snack and Tack and Grill at Townsville Landing.
