Delving beneath the surface Taking an in-‘depth’ look at Kerr Lake BY ALLIE OUTHOUSE DISPATCH INTERN

Kerr Lake seems to be a hook, line and sinker for fishermen. The lake is one of the finest fisheries in the eastern United States. Ever wondered why? “It has a good reputation,” said Chris Harward of Harwood Stripe Bass Guide. According to the Vance County Tourism Department, the lake’s reputation repeatedly attracts national and state fishing tournaments. FLW Everstart Series Tournament Director Ron Lapin arranges bass tournaments for a living. He says there are a number of factors that draw him to Kerr Lake: the catch rates, the size of the fish and easy access to fish just to name a few. “Different people like different species,” Harward added. “There’s lots of fish and lots of different kinds of fish in Kerr Lake.” Kerr Lake has such large quantities of diverse species that it is able to produce consistent catches all year round. The four most popular fish from Kerr Lake are largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish (channel, blue and flathead). In the spring Kerr Lake has been a trophy crappie system. Between April and May, Kerr Lake provides great access to bass. Catfish are popular during

The blue catfish is one of four types of catfish found in Kerr Lake. the summer and fall but striped bass are preferred in the cooler months. Because each of these species reproduce naturally, Virginia Department Inland Game and Fisheries, who primarily manages the aquatic life of Kerr Lake, rarely has to stock them. “The catch is always consistent,” Lapin added. A high or consistent catch rate indicates that the lake has a flourishing population of particular

species and, according to the 2012 Buggs Island Lake Report, all of the popular fish have them. Dan Michaelson, aquatic biologist of Virginia Department Inland Game and Fisheries, indicated that the large number of popular predators may be partially due to the quantities and variety of prey species. His North Carolina counterpart, Kirk Rundle — a fishery biologist of N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission — concurred.

“There’s a lot of food for them to eat,” Rundle said. “Such diversity all has to do with habitats. It’s a unique system,” Michaelson said. Michaelson explained that the fishing diversity was likely created when Kerr Lake was created in 1953. The two ecosystems of the Dan and Staunton rivers, which were both nutritious, productive and diverse when apart, were combined into a single, large, man-made reservoir that

was nearly twice the size of the original, individual fisheries. The size and structure of Kerr Lake made it an ideal location for a variety of diversity. Rundle added that the nature of the land when the lake was flooded created nutritious and diverse habitats for fish. “It has a good forge base and lots of nutrients,” Rundle said. Kerr Lake contained a lot of natural vegetation that forms the structure of most natural fisheries. Kerr Lake has continued to maintain a wooded shoreline — preventing development from degrading the fish’s habitat — which enhances the fisheries’ structures with timber and woody debris, enabling more fish to thrive. There are very few bodies of water in Virginia or North Carolina that can compare with the diversity and consistency of the fishing in Kerr Lake, but what sets it apart the most is its size, according to both Michaelson and Rundle. The size, structure and habitats of Kerr Lake has allowed for the production of record sized fish. For the state records, Kerr Lake has produced the largest freshwater drum (23 pounds, 8 ounces) and white bass (5 pounds, 14 ounces). The world record for blue catfish (143 pounds) also came out of Kerr Lake. In the words of Michaelson, “Kerr Lake has something for everyone. Meet the Rangers patrolling the shores of Kerr Lake Kerr Lake park rangers do a wide range of activities. They provide interpretation and education programs, conduct resource management work, assist with park management, manage the campgrounds and entrance station operations and are certified to provide emergency medical services when needed. They enforce the regulations of the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation and the state’s General Statues to protect the public as well as the park.

FIREWORKS REGULATIONS

Finding out which fireworks are legal in North Carolina can be difficult. According to Henderson Fire Chief Danny Wilkerson, an easy rule for citizens to remember is, “Nothing is allowed to leave the ground in North Carolina.” There are two kinds of fireworks, which are distinguished by their size and construction. The smaller of the two devices, called consumer or class C fireworks, are designed within the construction, chemical composition and labeling regulations of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a device is designed to exceed the CPSC restrictions in any way, it is considered a display firework and is illegal to unauthorized personnel under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. FHSA also prohibits the sale of the most dangerous types of class C fireworks to consumers. These federally banned fireworks include large re-loadable mortar shells, cherry bombs, aerial bombs, M-80 salutes and mail-order kits designed to build the aforementioned fireworks. Although North Carolina is one of 40 states that allows civilians to market class C fireworks, Wilkerson explained that the North Carolina’s 2012 Fire Prevention Code is all about safety. The code defines fireworks as “any composition or device for the purpose of producing a visible or an audible effect for entertainment purposes by combustion, deflagration or detonations.” Thus North Carolina considers devices such as party poppers, string poppers, snappers

or drop pops, snake and glow worms, smoke machines and sparklers to be fireworks. The previously listed items are some of the only fireworks North Carolinians are permitted to use. The state fire code dictates noisemakers be composed of 0.246 grains or less of explosive mixtures while sparklers must contain less than 100 grams of mixture. “The smaller amounts lessen the chance of an accident,” Wilkerson said. “And again its more for the aesthetic perspective. They’re still pretty, especially at night.” Fire and Life Safety Educator Jon Juntunen said, “I am in complete agreement with the fire code because they have done a lot more research to come up with guidelines and measurements that make people’s lives safer.” All other fireworks are illegal to North Carolinians unless the device contains less than 200 grams of explosives in tubes, with a maximum of 75 grams per tube, and is unable to detonate, explode, spin or propel itself through the air. While the legality of homemade fireworks is debatable, Wilkerson said, “I would strongly recommend buying approved fireworks from a reputable dealer.” He explained that the city fire department inspects local fireworks stands and vendors for illegal devices, but have yet to encounter any problems with local vendors. He said vendors often know the laws surrounding their products and that some vendors will even call the fire station to see if any laws have changed concerning the distribution of fireworks. see

• Do not carry fireworks in your pocket. • Do not allow young children to play with fireworks under any circumstances (including sparklers). • Do not permit older children to use fireworks without close adult supervision. • Do not allow any running or horseplay near fireworks. • Do not wear loose clothing while handling fireworks. • Never alter or experiment with homemade fireworks. • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. • Never light fireworks in a container, especially a glass or metal container. • Never have any portion of your body directly over a firework during or after ignition.

Essentials to have when on (or in) the water Water recreation is a popular pastime. When the weather warms, people often take to coastal areas to enjoy some fun in the sun and surf. What to wear for a day on the water depends on the type of activity one is partaking in, but there are some essentials you do not want to forget to bring along. • Sturdy shoes: Whether you will be standing on the deck of a sailboat or baiting a hook alongside a river, footwear should be sturdy. Water makes for slippery conditions, and shoes that provide traction blend form and function. Although flipflop sandals have become the go-to footwear, these shoes do not provide the arch support or traction necessary in wet conditions. A water shoe that has a sturdy sole as well as a

breathable upper material is a better bet. • Sun protection: The Food and Drug Administration advises that surfaces such as snow, sand, grass, or water can reflect much of the UV radiation that reaches them. A day on the water or nearby reflective surfaces necessitates wearing sun protection products, such as broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses rated for 100 percent UV protection are good ideas. UV rays are most intense at noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. • Layers: The weather can be unpredictable, and the temperature inland may differ from the temperature at the shore by several degrees. When boating or visiting the

coast, wear layered clothing so you can shed layers as needed to remain comfortable. • Change of clothing: Wet clothing can become uncomfortable to wear, and it may become dangerous if the temperature drops. Wet clothing can extract heat from the body much faster than dry clothing, potentially causing hypothermia, or a drop in body temperature. Couple wet clothing with windy conditions, and hypothermia can quickly set in. Always bring along a change of clothing and store it in a waterproof bag or container.

This should include extra socks and shoes. • Life jacket: The Centers for Disease Control and Preventionsays drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury deaths in the United States. Whenever you are on or near the water, wearing a life jacket is a safe idea and one that can potentially save your life. A life jacket should be made available for everyone on a vessel. Dress the part when spending a day on the water. Having the right equipment can reduce your risk for injury.
