For Otis Lyons, coaching track and field in Granville County is nothing new. Lyons has previously coached the sport at South Granville and Granville Central before most recently accepting Webb’s opening. “I’ve did my rounds,” Lyons said with a laugh. “Been at South Granville, Granville Central and now I’m at J.F. Webb. This is my last go round.” Thus far, Lyons has been pleasantly surprised with the numbers on both his girls and boys squads. “We’re way ahead of schedule number-wise,” Lyons said. “Got some great kids. They’ve been doing what I ask them to do.” Despite having a good bit of youth, Lyons feels his roster has a vast amount of talent as well. “We’ve got a long way to go with technique on a lot of things,” he said. “The good thing is I now have facilities to work with. Of course when I was at Granville Central, we had nothing to work with.” Throwing events are expected to be Webb’s specialty this season. “Shot and disc is probably our bread and butter right now,” Lyons said. “That’s for guys and girls. That is really going to be our strongest (events).” Lyons noted that whenever he previously would coach against Webb he rarely saw athletes compete in multiple events. He plans to immediately change that. “We’re going to do a lot of that,” he said. “Some kids are going to learn some events. It’s going to take us some time, so I’m hoping to develop some long jump and triple jump people. Get that in their repertoire now, early.” The Warriors return junior Rainesha Taylor who was the 3-A Big Eight girls track and field runner of the year in 2014. “She’s probably our strongest sprinter,” Lyons said. Lyons thinks the Warriors girls’ team should excel in sprints. Meanwhile on the boys’ side, Brandon Throckmorton is back and was one of the conference’s top throwers in the shot put last season. Senior football standout Gearl Majors is also expected to provide a boost as a thrower. “We’re looking at some big things from these kids,” Lyons said. It remains uncertain as to how Lyons’ final track and field coaching stint will pan out. Yet one thing has always been consistent for him and that’s the energy he shows whenever the season kicks into gear. “I’m always excited at track time,” Lyons said. “I’m just trying to change the culture here. Like I said, I’m a person that goes around the hallways and tries to recruit kids to get out here. That’s the only way to be successful.”

SNorthern, tarting from Scratch Southern, Webb each welcome in new coaches

BY JOHN HOLT - DISPATCH STAFF

J.F. WEBB Last month, Leo Brunelli was wrapping up his ninth season leading the J.F. Webb boys basketball program. Fast-forward 30 days and he is beginning a new chapter as Webb’s latest softball coach. “This is new for me,” Brunelli said. “When I came to J.F. Webb nine years ago for the basketball program, it was a new beginning. I was proving myself to them. We were proving ourselves to each other. “Now this is a new opportunity.” Brunelli’s daughter plays softball at Northern Granville Middle School and he said the opportunity to coach the sport at Webb was brought upon to him. “It wasn’t something that I seeked out,” Brunelli said. “When the opportunity came up, I went home and asked my boss, my wife. I said, ‘Do you want to be a softball widow?’ It kind of concerned me a little bit because she jumped at it real quick and said yes. “My wife said, ‘is this what’s best for J.F. Webb?’ She’s an educator also and she understands. I said, ‘I truly believe it is.”’ Almost immediately after accepting the position, Brunelli brought on Winston Puryear and Duane Allen to become his assistant coaches. Puryear is the team’s offensive coordinator (working with batters), whereas Allen is the team’s defensive coordinator (spending time with pitchers and catchers). “It’s been good because this is new for me not to have complete control of every aspect of it,” Brunelli said. “But it is a different game. It is a different sport. You’ve almost got double the players.” Brunelli understands the Lady Warriors didn’t reach the postseason in 2014 and he doesn’t want to look back in the past. “I’m worried about now and the future,” he said. Webb’s 2015 roster includes just one senior in Ellen Blevins and its pitching lineup is extremely young with three sophomores and one freshman. Brunelli is uncertain how things will unfold for him in his new role, but he’s eager to get the challenge going. “Great athletes want to be coached,” Brunelli said. “Great athletes want to take whatever they’re given. Some of it is going to work; some of it is not. But we want to give them options. “Everyone is in it for the right reasons.”

nothing but attentive and doing what’s been asked of them. “No signs of nothing bad,” Hoyle said. “If we get to something like that, we’ll address it when it comes. For the most part, everything has been great. They’ve really made me feel good about coaching the team. “They’ve made it where it’s been all worthwhile because they’ve kind of showed me respect and gave me appreciation.”

SOUTHERN VANCE

The Southern Vance softball team welcomes in W.A. West as its new coach in 2015. While this is West’s first official season at the helm, he’s no stranger to the Raiders program or the sport of softball. “I helped them for two years kind of as a volunteer and didn’t do the coaching,” West said. “I played the game for 10 years. I’ve coached it for 35 (years) on the travel ball circuits.” West said he plans to run the program similar to that of how travel ball teams conduct practices and workouts. “Everything will be fast-paced,” NORTHERN VANCE West said. “We’ll do a lot of short game Following a season that was cut stuff. … We’re going to have a whole short 12 months ago, the Northern new system, run everything different. How quickly his newcomers develop as well as how quickly the group picks up on his system will be two majors keys in the team’s potential success. “That’s our goal basically, to win more games than we did last year and try to make the playoffs,” West said.

WARREN COUNTY Following a state playoff appearance with her girls’ basketball team, Warren County softball coach Shannon Jones is hoping for a similar type of positive season with her Lady Eagles softball squad. “We just want to learn,” Jones said. “When you have a young team, of course your goal is always to win. But at the same time, we want to teach them the game. Right now, they’re learning the game and learning how to play with each other. Warren County’s roster features a balanced mix of returners and newcomers. The team’s lone senior is Kiana Alston and Jones notes that her team doesn’t include one superstar. “Definitely no standouts,” Jones said. “We have to pull each other up by the boot straps every day, every

game. You may have one standout today and then somebody totally different the next day.” Jones’ coaching style remains consistent between softball and basketball. “I’m not going to change across the board,” she said. “I am the same.” The fifth-year Eagles head coach credits Finnell Moss, her assistant coach, for getting her team prepared in the offseason. “I’ve got the best assistant coach in the world,” Jones said. “He’s had them out here since February. The ones who haven’t been doing another sport have been out here for a while working out. He’s the best in the business.” The Lady Eagles should rely on their team speed in 2015 and Jones is optimistic about her unit’s freshman class. “Our freshmen are pretty mature for freshmen,” Jones said. “They listen well and do what they’re supposed to do. They’re pretty responsible for themselves.” The Lady Eagles hope to contend for a conference title as well as earn a postseason berth by season’s end. Experience and Poise

BY JOHN HOLT - DISPATCH STAFF

CROSSROADS CHRISTIAN

Since Crossroads Christian varsity girls’ soccer coach Josh Bogle took over the program prior to the 2012 season, the Lady Colts have grown each year under his guidance. Crossroads went from being 0-11-1 in Bogle’s first season, to 2-8 in 2013 and 3-6 last spring. “The first three (years) have been a building environment, which I think we’ve finally laid the foundation that we need,” Bogle said. “I definitely feel much better about this year. I think a lot of the work we’ve put in, working on fundamentals, working with younger players has paid off.” The Lady Colts said goodbye to Caroline May who scored 90 percent of the team’s goals during the past two seasons and also looks to replaces its goalie, backup goalie and a center back from last year’s squad. “We definitely lost some from last year,” Bogle said. “But this might be the most experienced team I’ve had in four years despite their age. If for no other reason, they’ve been playing middle school or varsity on some level here. So they’re still young, but they’re more experienced than our teams have been in the past. “We don’t have that one star I feel like this year, but I feel like the 11 together will be better than the 11 we’ve had in the past.”

J.F. WEBB

The J.F. Webb varsity girls’ soccer team returns 15 of its players from 2014 this spring and the expectations are simply to have a productive season. “This year we have more upperclassmen I feel like,” Webb second-year head coach Mary Robinson said. “It’s nice having more people who have been playing together for a while and more leaders on the team.” Due to the February inclement weather, Robinson said the team’s preseason was limited and not as encouraging as it had been one season ago. She does state, however, that she’s been excited about the progress she’s noticed from senior Abbey Smith and junior Carla Pike. Smith, a midfielder, missed a majority of her junior campaign with an injury. The good news for the Lady Warriors is that she is back healthy and ready to go this spring. “She’s a very versatile player,” Robinson said. “We can put her on offense or defense and she does very well in either spot. She’s also one of our captains. She’s a great leader on the team both through her actions on the field and also just her encouraging words to the others.” Meanwhile Pike, the Warriors goalkeeper, returns after earning all-conference honors and being named all-region by the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association last season. “She is another one of our captains, and from what I’ve seen this year, she’s definitely grown as a player,” Robinson said. “She’s become more vocal. She’s very talkative, a good director, and I think she’s done that for our team.” Robinson hails from a family coaching tree as her sister currently coaches lacrosse at the collegiate level and her grandfather was a former college basketball coach. She said it’s nice to have family members as resources whenever concerns or questions arise, but anticipates those to decline as year two of her own coaching career year begins. “I will probably have to change a few things just based off what I saw last year,” Robinson said. “And of course, each individual game is different. Now that I’ve seen a lot of teams that we’re playing, I’m at least familiar with them. I think that’s going to make it a little bit easier.”

KERR-VANCE ACADEMY

After earning a spot in the state tournament last season, the Kerr-Vance Academy varsity girls’ soccer team is optimistic heading into 2015. The biggest reason behind that optimism: experience. “This year I’m really excited about the season because I have six seniors,” KerrVance head coach Amy Peralta said. The Spartans senior class features Jacey Monahan, Shannon Cash, Mckenzie Jones, Bailee Tippett, Claire Freeman and Rachel Ross. Cash returns at goalie after she hardly saw any action last season due to an early season concussion. “We’re really fortunate to have her back healthy and ready to go for her senior year,” Peralta said. Monahan and Freeman are listed as strikers. Jones plays midfield and the duo of Tippett and Ross anchor the defense. “Every position on the field,” Peralta said, “defender, midfield and striker, I have at least a senior everywhere. … So I feel like I’ve got a lot of experience in every position on the field.” Besides the senior class, Peralta is encouraged with her quartet of freshman. They include Holly Steg, Caroline Hoyle, Nicole Dunkley and Riley Short. “All of these girls have played a lot of soccer,” Peralta said. Steg, who is one of Peralta’s two daughters on the team, played goalie last season when Cash was sidelined with the concussion. “Holly was an eighth grader and played goalkeeper for varsity all of last year,” Peralta said. “So (we) never had a true backup goalkeeper. For this year, I’m hoping Shannon (Cash) will be well. But if something happens, I’ve got a backup goalkeeper.” Now entering her eighth season at the helm of the Lady Spartans soccer program, Peralta believes this year’s bunch has the continuity and depth to make a deep run into the state tournament. “I’ve got more coming back in every position than I’ve probably ever had,” Peralta said. “All six seniors are great motivators to the others and good leaders. I think we’ll have a good season. I think they’ll feel good about it. “I think that they will be able to compete and play just as well as anybody else in the conference.”

NORTHERN VANCE

A new era begins for the Northern Vance girls’ soccer program. Adrian Edwards takes over the head coaching reigns for the Vikings and enters his new role carrying plenty of experience in the sport. “I played soccer in high school and university too,” Edwards said. “I used

to play forward, right wing. I bring my speed from track and field into it because I was a sprinter. My background from high school and college is what I bring to the table.” Edwards states that his coaching style is open meaning he wants everyone on his team to be passionate toward growing. “It’s basically putting a classroom on the field,” Edwards said. The first-year Vikings head coach wasn’t sure as to how the squad fared in 2014, yet this spring he plans on guiding the group as far as possible. “Most of the girls here are new to the team,” Edwards said. “We have a few returning players. I’ll try my best to work with them. Basically push them as hard as I can. “The girls are willing to work and I look forward to it being a successful season.” Edwards said that he would like his team to win at least 50 percent of its games this spring, but admitted that he won’t measure their success solely through total number of victories. “Each team member will have to show some type of improvement in terms of knowledge of the game and also their skill level,” he said. While the Vikings’ offense looks to be strong, Edwards is somewhat worried about his team’s defense before its season opener. “My girls, most of them, don’t want to go into the goal,” Edwards said. “So I’m concerned about that, having a goalkeeper. My defense is the weaker link.” Early on, Edwards wasn’t able to name one player he had high expectations for entering the season. Instead, he elected to speak more about the group as a whole. “All of the girls on the team are putting their all on the table,” Edwards said. “That’s what is important. I don’t want to specifically single one out. I’m proud of what the girls are doing so far. “They have the right attitude and that’s the most important thing, their attitude toward the game.”

SOUTHERN VANCE

the Southern Vance varsity girls’ soccer team, head coach Brandi Breinig still remembers a memorable feat that occurred in 2014. “Last year, we did get our first win as coaches,” Breinig said. “That was exciting.” Breinig described her first two seasons as a period of trying to build a program. She believes that the upcoming season already has the potential for a better outcome than her initial two years. The reason behind that thinking: larger numbers in interest. “We had 29 girls come to tryouts,” Breinig said. “We actually had to make cuts for the first time. It was hard, but it was exciting because we know our program is getting better with more to choose from.” Breinig has been impressed with her team’s willingness thus far and likes what she’s seen from the forward position. “Our offense is looking pretty good and we’ve got a lot of returning defenders,” Breinig said. The Raiders return sophomore allconference performer Kendall Harris who started at goalie last season as a freshman. “She’s back and that’s good,” Breinig said. “She is definitely one of our top players, especially in goal. She’s a beast.” Breinig is also thrilled about welcoming back Brianna Escobar on defense, Rosa Gonzalez in midfield and Cristal Sandoval at forward. “All of our returners are really good girls,” Breinig said. “We’ve got some heavy hitters.” The expectations Breinig has set for her 2015 group is to produce at least a .500 record. “That would be awesome if we could do that,” she said. “We really just want to stay positive this year, work really hard at practices and just have a lot of heart and do what we do at games.” It looks to be an interesting year ahead and Breinig is eager to get it underway. “We’re looking forward to this season because we’ve got a full team of girls and a good group of girls,” Breinig said. Raising CROSSROADS CHRISTIAN

For the first time in four years, the Crossroads Christian School welcomes back a varsity baseball program. “It’s exciting,” Crossroads head coach Mike Thomas said. “I’m really looking forward to it.” The Colts’ 2015 squad features four freshmen, five juniors and just one senior. “We’ve got a young team,” Thomas said. “We’ve got some inexperience. But where we’re lost for experience, we make it up in heart.” Thomas listed Dillon Thomas as his team’s top ace and batter. “He’s probably going to be our ace as far as pitching and batting,” Thomas said. “He’s got a good bat.” The first-year coach also stated that he has high expectations for freshman Parker Gill, Brody Steffensen and Austin Bishop. “I expect those three to really step up,” Thomas said. The team’s biggest strength likely will be its speed and Thomas said he aspires the group to finish at least .500 or better. “We want to play .500 ball,” Thomas said. “If we can play .500 ball, I think we’ll be satisfied with this young team.”

J.F. WEBB

Youth plagued J.F. Webb last season as the Warriors finished the year with a 7-16 record. “We started on an average game, two freshmen,” J.F. Webb head coach Mike Carroll said. “We had two seniors. The rest were middle of the pack guys. A lot of our pitching staff was young.” Despite being so young, Carroll was glad his group was competitive in a majority of their conference games. “I don’t know how much the public keeps up with it, but it’s probably one of the toughest conferences in the state,” Carroll said of being a member of the 3-A Big Eight. “I felt like we competed in every game. And this year, I expect us to come out on top in some of those games.” This past fall, the Warriors spent a significant amount of time working on improving their strength. “We stayed in the weight room four days a week, getting stronger, getting faster,” Carroll said. “I’ve definitely seen it. In the little bit of time we’ve had on the field, I’ve been able to see the development strengthwise.” The squad will be led this spring by Lenoir-Rhyne University signee Taylor Williams. Williams enters his senior season as a three-time all-conference selection. “I expect a lot out of him,” Carroll said. “What he gives me, I’ll find out. The expectation is still high with him.” Besides Williams, the Warriors welcome back senior Zach Harris who plans to play at Guilford College beginning in the fall. “He’s just been a contributor everywhere,” Carroll said of Harris. “He’s a utility player. He’s going to be one of our middle guys this year up the middle. But he’s that utility kid. “He’ll sacrifice anything for the team and just go play.” Carroll also is excited to have back sophomore pitcher Zack Keeton. “He was close to the top of the leader board in the conference as far as ERA as a freshman pitcher,” Carroll said of Keeton’s 2014 season. “So we definitely expect good things out of him.” A successful season for Carroll and his bunch would be a berth in the state playoffs. The program hasn’t made it since before Carroll took over as head coach in 2013. “If we can finish in the middle of the pack in this conference and make the playoffs, we’re going to have a good year,” Carroll said.

KERR-VANCE ACADEMY

Despite having had barely any practice time prior to March, Kerr-Vance Academy baseball coach Todd Wilkerson feels encouraged about his upcoming fourth season leading the Spartans baseball program. “I think we should compete in the conference this year, if our pitching holds up,” Wilkerson said. The Spartans roster is highlighted with one senior and a stellar five-person junior class. Adam Medlin is the team’s lone senior. “He’s probably going to play in the outfield and some at short,” Wilkerson said of Medlin. Wilkerson’s son, Daniel, is a returning all-conference performer, who pitches and splits time at shortstop. “He’s just recently come back from Arizona,” Wilkerson said late last month. “He was out there in an Under-Armor (baseball) event. We’re expecting some good things from him there.” Other returning all-conference members for the squad are juniors Dustin Smith and Damon Stevenson (all-conference honorable mention). The Spartans also welcome back catcher Lane Humphries who spent the 2013-14 school year at J.F. Webb.

Warren County’s Justin Fountain tries to get back to first base as Kerr-Vance’s Dustin Smith waits on the throw. “(He) was at (J.F.) Webb last year,” Wilkerson said of Humphries. “He’s back. He was recently here, but transferred over there and now he’s back. We’re looking for some good things out of him.” Wilkerson feels that in order for his team to be successful their pitching will have to be on point. If that winds up being the case, special things have the ability of happening. “You’ve got to have your pitching,” Wilkerson said. “If our pitching is healthy, I think that will be a big key. I’m looking for a good season.”

I’ll find out as we go if they’ve gotten to be smarter baseball players. Hopefully that will come with the age and maturity.” McGhee is confident as to what the Raiders can accomplish in 2015. And thus far, he’s been proud with what he’s witnessed. “I think we’re going to have a good group,” McGhee said. “I’m going to be optimistic about what we’re going to do. Our goal is to still make “but we lost most of our pitching. So we’re young this year. We don’t have but one the state playoffs.” Nelson feels his 2015 bunch has the senior.” The squad’s lone senior is Tyler Thomppotential to continue its streak of postseason appearances. Yet he knows the task son who has been the Eagles’ leading hitter won’t be easy, especially considering the the past two seasons and was voted onto the All-Northern Carolina Conference baseyouth his team carries. “Our weak link I would say this year ball team in 2014. Martin anticipates Alex Stainback, Blake would be pitching,” Nelson said. “We’re going to have a lot of young guys that are Tharrington, Weldon Capps and Alston going to have to grow up quick. Myself and Scott will be his pitchers. It will be a transimy assistant (coach), we’re asking a bunch tion for Tharrington who spent last season of freshman, and even the returning sophomores, to continue what they did last year and the freshman to grow up quick because they’re going to have to play.” The Vikings graduated three seniors from its 2014 team, including its top pitcher Nate Arrington as well as Kevonte Hanks who also spent time as a pitcher. “Those two guys were the heart and soul of the team in producing runs for us,” Nelson said. “Unfortunately, they’ve graduated. I wish I could have them back.” Northern’s roster features two seniors this season. They are Kale Boone and Tabrian Scott. “I’m hoping they’ll take on some leadership,” Nelson said of the duo. Nelson is looking for productive seasons from Christopher and Cody Stainback as well Austin Murphy. At the same time, his returning sophomores, Jabe Montgomery, Payne Watson and Jared Bennett will each see their roles expand. “They got a little taste of it last year,” Nelson said. “So they kind of know what to expect. The freshman coming in — if they’re not ready, they better get ready.” The fifth-year Vikings head coach believes the way his squad acts and responds to adversity throughout the season will determine where they will be when it’s over. “I’ve liked what I’ve seen,” Nelson said. “It’s who’s going to step up on the mound for us is going to be the biggest challenge. Our conference is strong. We face good teams day in and day out. “Pitching-wise, how these young guys deal with it is going to be key.”

SOUTHERN VANCE

Following a one-year absence, Tony McGhee returns to lead the Southern Vance Raiders baseball program this spring. “I’m very excited to be back and getting started and develop the program and get it back in the right direction, hopefully,” McGhee said. The Raiders’ roster features four players that have played for McGhee when he was previously coaching the school. Yet the rest of his team is new faces to him. “I’ve got to get familiar with them and them with me as well,” McGhee said. “Some I’ve seen play.” While having been away from Southern Vance last season, McGhee doesn’t envision bringing or attempting to create a new coaching style in his return. “To be honest, it’s baseball,” he said. “There’s not much you can change. You’ve got to be able to pitch and hit and be strong up the middle. Make the routine play and every now and then make a great play.” Pitchers Dustin Brummitt and Montavis Gray are the team’s two seniors who have previously played under McGhee. Meanwhile Chris Harris and Hayden Harris are

at first base. The team also is looking for bright seasons from twins Dustin and Justin Fountain who were standouts on the Eagles’ junior varsity squad one season ago. “I hope they hit pretty good,” Martin said of the brothers. “They hit pretty good last year on JV.” The Eagles’ infield should be decent defensively, however, it’s the team’s offense that somewhat concerns Martin. “They just got to hit,” Martin said. Warren County lost its two top pitchers from a season ago in Hayden Sullivan and Darian Sellers. Sullivan was named to the All-Northern Carolina Conference baseball team, while Sellers was an honorable mention selection. “A couple of games we lost by one run,” Martin said. “We could have finished in third place in the conference. That’s in the past.” The objective this spring is to make it back to the postseason and advance further. “That’s the goal for everybody, winning,” Martin said. “I think we ought to be able to finish in the top four of the conference. I don’t know what everybody else has coming back, but I know Bunn and South Granville are going to be powerful.” The Eagles will face both conference opponents twice this season. That’s really it, and you just try to build on that every year.”

NORTHERN VANCE

The inaugural season of lacrosse at Northern Vance last spring didn’t result in many highs. The squad ended the year with a winless record. Jimmy Johnson, the team’s new head coach, wants the Vikings to compete on a daily basis in year two of the program. “Our philosophy is going to be — no matter where you’re at in the depth chart — when you step onto the field, you should be ready to play and ready for that moment,” Johnson said. The Vikings return several players from last season and are a junior heavy group. The team features just two seniors. “We should be pretty good this year and next year hopefully,” Johnson said, “As long as they continue in the program.” see lacrosse/page 11

“Those are two that are really great,” Alderdice said of the duo. “But they’re all great (players).” Thus far, Alderdice said the Eagles’ singles top of the lineup is further along than its bottom of the lineup. “We’re doing better in singles than we are in doubles,” Alderdice said. “We kind of need to redo that a little bit and it’ll probably get better. But our singles is definitely better.” Alderdice said her squad dropped a tight 5-4 contest to Roanoke Rapids in their March 9 season opener, but believe they will steadily improve throughout the season. “Basically raising ever ybody’s levels,” Alderdice said. “We haven’t talked too much about really winning because we just started and some people are beginners. Obviously, I have some top players who know they want to win.”

Kirsten Alderdice replaces Tucker Whitesides as head coach of the Warren County Eagles boys’ tennis program. Alderdice hails from Charlotte and is quite familiar with the sport. “I took a lot of tennis lessons and a lot of clinics,” Alderdice said. “I definitely know how to play tennis and they needed somebody. So I said I would do it.” The Eagles’ 2015 roster includes five seniors and eight total players. “They’re making a ton of progress,” Alderdice said. “It’s a really good team. They really enjoy being with each other, which I think is really important.” Junior Austin Bender enters the season as the team’s number one singles player. Meanwhile senior Marcus Richardson has shown Contact the writer at jholt@ early growth after beginning the hendersondispatch.com. sport just this year.

The team’s three captains are a trio of juniors: Lucas Hamrick, Jonathan Williams and Jesse Hunter. Hamrick plays attack, Williams is a defenseman and Hunter is in the midfield. “Those three guys are going to be big for us, especially Jesse with the face-offs,” Johnson said. Jonah Peterson will begin the season as the team’s goalie.

The Dispatch extends its appreciation to the athletic directors and staff of the area high schools for participating in this year’s Spring Sports Preview.

“He should be able to perform nice for us,” Johnson said. “It’s his first year in goalie.” Johnson’s background in sports centered around playing football and wrestling growing up. He’s always been a lacrosse fan, however, and he hopes his team’s strength will be its defense. “I’m fine with a game being won 11-10 as long as we get the win,” Johnson said. “Defensively we are about where we need to be. Offensively, we need to pick it up a little bit.” Johnson said his players have displayed positive attitudes throughout his initial weeks of being in charge and he envisions that

continuing throughout the year. “It’s always a little different when you get a new coach, and a first-year coach too on top of that,” Johnson said. “Just like in a classroom they tr y to feel you out a little bit and see where you’re at. … They definitely seem to be, from what I’m told, more upbeat than they were last year. They expect big things, and as long as they keep that expectation and stay hungr y then we’ll be just fine.” Contact the writer at jholt@hendersondispatch.com.
