Musical events to satisfy every taste coming up For music lovers, the upcoming spring and summer months offer a variety of concerts and performances to suit every musical taste. The Vance-Granville Community Band will offer its annual Mother’s Day Concert at the gazebo on the main campus of Vance-Granville Community College, Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, on May 8 at 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be gladly accepted. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn
chairs and a picnic meal. The band also plans a free Memorial Day concert on May 27 at the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre on Raleigh Road in Henderson. Under the direction of VGCC music instructor Michael Stephenson, the Vance-Granville Community Band is a combination of students and interested citizens. Band members hail from all four counties of the college service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Frank-

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor three “Meet Me In The Street” outdoor concerts. On May 26, The Castaways will perform a free concert in downtown Henderson, followed on July 14 by the Konnection Band. Both performance will be held on Breckenridge Street from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Vendors will be on hand with concession food items and Harris Inc. will provide beverages. A third concert event is planned for Sept. 1. This year’s Alive After Five events, sponsored by the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, will kick off May 12 in Oxford with Jim Quick and The Coastline Band as featured performers. The second event, which will be held in Creedmoor on Aug. 4, will feature The Craig Woolard Band. The Legends of Beach will perform for the last concert of the series on Sept. 22 in Oxford. Area theater groups offer drama galore in upcoming productions The Henderson Rec Players, the Granville Little Theatre and the Lakeland Theatre Company are all offering upcoming productions this spring and summer to entertain and delight area residents. The Henderson Rec Players will present “The King & I” July 14-16 at E.M. Rollins Elementary School’s auditorium. The story deals with the experiences of a British schoolteacher who is hired by the King of Siam as part of his drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the king and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the play, as well as by a love that neither is able to express. The musical premiered on Broadway
on March 29, 1951 and has become a classic. For more information on tickets, contact Julie Beichner at (252) 431-6091. The Granville Little Theatre will stage a production of “Bye, Bye Birdie” May 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and on May 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Oxford City Hall Auditorium. “Bye, Bye Birdie” is a satire on American society, set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The rock star character’s name, “Conrad Birdie,” is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered today for his long career as a country music star, but before that, in
the late 1950s, he was one of Presley’s rock ‘n’ roll rivals. The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a 1963 film and a 1995 television production. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $5 for children under 5. Tickets will be available at the door. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. (1:45 p.m. for matinees). ‘A Journey Thru the 20th Century’ planned at Harris Exhibit Hall Preparations are in the works for the next exhibit in the Granville County Historical Society Museum’s Harris Exhibit Hall, located at 1 Museum Lane in Oxford. Pam Thornton, director, is in the process of collecting interesting items for “A Journey Thru the 20th Century,” which will open this spring. The large exhibit room will be divided into 10 rooms, each depicting a decade from 1900-1999 with pieces, pictures, music and other items that define that decade. As visitors walk through each room, they can see the changes made every 10 years in the areas of household, entertainment, education, “fads” of the time, technology, clothing and
other ways which show how Americans have evolved during the last century. The entry room will now be turned into a country store where drinks and snacks may be purchased. “We think this will be an interesting and fun exhibit,” Thornton said. In 2000, the Harris Exhibit Hall opened in space that was formerly the city’s freezer locker plant, located adjacent to the old jail (now the Granville History Museum). This larger facility now houses exhibit rooms, offices, a conference room, workshop, archival room, kitchen and rest rooms. The museum is a member of the North Carolina Grassroots Science Collaborative and frequent science hands-on
exhibits can be enjoyed. Other exhibit topics include history, art and culture. In addition, the Granville History Museum and the gift shop located in the Harris Exhibit Hall will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Beginning with the Native American period through recent history, the story of the county is told through artifacts, murals, printed material, a movie and oral histories. The historical “heroes” of the county are interpreted in “light boxes.” Topics cover agriculture, education, architecture, industry, jail history and military. Hands-on exhibits are enjoyed especially by the young visitor.
