Come celebrate the harvest at Oktoberfest BY DAILY DISPATCH STAFF
Oktoberfest will return to Henderson on Nov. 6. The Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission will again host the event, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Henderson. A committee selected to follow up on ideas from last year’s premier Oktoberfest celebration hopes this year’s event will be just as exciting and successful. One key feature that commission members agreed could not be improved on was the stage and street performances by the Little German Band and Dancers. Commission Chairman Jason Stewardson said the band’s performance includes more movement and interaction than anyone might expect. “It is more
than just music, it’s a whole show,” he said. Food vendors are being asked to think strudel, bratwurst, sauerkraut, knockwurst and other foods with links to German culture. Organizers hope to fill the streets of downtown Henderson with the sights and smells of a truly German celebration of harvest. “Folks should understand, Oktoberfest is all about celebrating harvest,” Downtown Development Commission Director Phil Lakernick said. “We’re on target for that with our early-November celebration date.” The Little German Band has 80 members, all volunteer Oktoberfest enthusiasts. Anywhere from a couple dozen band members up to more than half the troop are likely to head out for a typical event. Stewardson said the band
and festival means excitement for families plus fun and games for children. Children’s games, attractions and vendors are slated to begin that morning, some situated in the library area. The intersection at Breckenridge and Wyche streets is planned as a focal point for band and show activities, with a flow of celebration fanning out from there. Ahner Security and Harris Distributing are key sponsors for the events. Oktoberfest started 200 years ago in Munich, Germany. The 16day festival grew in recent years due to additional remembrances of German reunification. Dates in Munich run from late September to early October. It has also become a global phenomenon, with celebration dates varied depending on seasonal and local factors.
