Defensive oriented Raiders Baskett aims to get Vikings excited for upcoming season back to state playoffs BY JOHN HOLT

he Southern Vance Raiders boys’ basketball team looks to improve on its 9-13 record from a season ago. Although the squad graduated six seniors, they still have a core nucleus of players returning. “The attitude is awesome so far,” Raiders head coach Greg Ackles said. “Ever ybody is coming in with the antennas up ready to learn. A lot of the guys are ver y active, moving around and asking questions. They want to learn, so they know exactly what’s going on.” Last season was Ackles’ first leading the Raiders varsity boys program and he’s expecting bigger things in his second year. He said with the players already understanding his demands, the on-court performance will be improved. “I can get a little more directed into coaching versus having to teach what needs to be done in the beginning,” he said. Ackles is instructing the Raiders to be a fast unit who can push the ball down court within six to seven seconds. Meanwhile on defense, he wants to be nothing but aggressive. “You tr y to make the offense uncomfortable,” Ackles said. “If you want to go to the left, I’m tr ying to force you to the right. Tr y to make you do things that you don’t want to do on both sides of the ball.” At this point, Ackles notes that the teams’ defense has progressed farther along than the offense. But his main goal is to keep Raider

opponents under 40 points. “Some people think that’s unrealistic,” Ackles said. “To me, that’s ver y realistic. That’s 10 (points) a quarter. If you play defense like you’re suppose to play defense, the way we’re suppose to play defense, that’s ver y reasonable. “Now are we going to hold ever y team to under 40? Obviously not. But that’s the goal.” Ackles feels that if his team can be relentless on the defensive side of the ball then ever ything else will fall into place. “If we make it hard for teams to score that softens it up for you a little bit on offense,” Ackles said. “Our offense, that’ll come naturally on its own.” The Raiders will be expecting big things from Torian Henderson, one of the Raiders’ returning starters. “He’ll probably be one of our leaders this year,” Ackles said of Henderson. “He’ll definitely be one of the top players in the conference. I know that for sure.” The primar y objective for Ackles and his group is to earn a state playoff berth and capture the 2A Northern Carolina Conference title. He acknowledged that there were games the Raiders shouldn’t have lost last season, but also games they shouldn’t have won. “The game goes hand in hand,” Ackles said. “You at least always want to compete in your conference and then get in the playoffs. Once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen.” Contact the writer at jholt@ hendersondispatch.com.

orthern Vance varsity girls basketball coach Randolph Crews assures his 2014-15 squad is the best team he’s seen at Northern in the last 10 years. “The difficult job I have this year is subbing issues,” Crews said. “I can put a whole second unit in and not miss a beat.” The Vikings finished a disappointing 3-22 last season, but competing in a summer league at Franklinton this past summer gave Crews a newfound belief in his team. “It was the first year since I’ve been coach that we committed as a team to doing something over the summer,” Crews said. Although the Vikings didn’t have their entire team present at the summer league, they still fared well. “I didn’t care if we won the tournament or not,” Crews said. “I just wanted our girls to go play.” Besides having a strong summer, Crews feels his team’s other strengths are size and guard play. The Vikings will be led by junior Jacquilyn Miller who earned a spot on the 3A Big Eight all-conference team last season. “She’s a post player who can step out and shoot the 3,” Crews said. “She can be as good as she wants to be.” While the Vikings have several preseason goals, one of them is to end a losing streak to their biggest rival. “We haven’t beaten Southern Vance since I’ve been here,” Crews said. “I’ve gone five or six years and have not beat them.” Crews said if the Vikings can defeat Southern Vance, the culture of women’s basketball in Vance County, will shift. “They are, until we beat them, the premier

fter losing just one starter from last year’s team, Warren County girls basketball coach Shannon Jones is optimistic heading into her fifth year at the helm of the Eagles’ program. “We don’t have to do much teaching,” Jones said earlier this month. “We just have to get in shape. We’ve got to refresh and we’ve got to put in some new things. But other than that, the girls are used to playing with each other and the chemistr y is still there.” While Jones doesn’t necessarily believe that having an experienced team translates to automatic results, she does see it as a positive. “Their passion and drive for the game is a whole lot deeper than in the past,” Jones said. “I don’t really have to motivate them much. They just want to play.” Thus far, Jones said her biggest challenge has been getting her team in shape. Yet she has been pleased with her squad’s attitude. “The only thing you have to make sure is that they’re disciplined,” she said. “Ever ything else just falls into place.” As far as goals are concerned, the Eagles are aiming to capture the 2A Northern Carolina conference title. “One increment at a time, one game at a time, one play at a time,” Jones said. “So we focus on winning ever y single play. We focus on winning ever y single possession. Then, we focus on winning games.”

Thompson said. “Honestly we only have one true post player. Then after that, we really drop down a few inches. But hey, we’ve got a lot of athletic players and rebounding is just a state of mind. “You don’t have to be 6’8” to rebound. You’ve just got to have a lot of heart.” Thompson expects that her team’s non-conference schedule will serve as a beneficial test early on. The Eagles are set to face opponents such as Nash Central (Nov. 25), Northern Vance (Dec. 5) and Granville Central (Dec. 9). “Anytime you play Northern Vance that is definitely a wonderful game because you don’t see many teams play a 1-3-1 (defense), and they do it to perfection,” Thompson said. “So I just think that’s a wonderful non-conference match up.” And as Thompson prepares to begin her fourth season leading the Eagles, she states that a successful season would be another top-three conference finish as well as a return trip to the state playoffs. “You always go into it with the mindset that we’re going to be competing for the No. 1 spot and I truly believe that,” Thompson said. “I think a lot of teams lost a lot of players. It’s how quick these young players mature and get out there on the floor and show what they have.”

arren County boys basketball coach Wanda Thompson isn’t hesitant to admit that her team has several questions marks heading into the 2014-15 season. After finishing with a 19-7 record, runner-up in the 2A Northern Carolina Conference and advancing to the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs, Thompson’s most difficult task will be attempting to replace 11 seniors. “Those guys worked hard,” Thompson said. “Their work ethic was just tremendous. We were confident going into last year. I know the expectations were high for us. “This year, we want to continue that. The juniors are really going to have to perform this year.” Despite losing nearly 75 percent of their team, the Eagles do return Tyler Thompson and A.J. Alston, both starters on last year’s squad. The group also welcomes back Michael Hargrove and Dyami Wortham who each played key roles coming off the bench. “They’ve got to be the leaders and they’ve got to work hard,” Thompson said of the returning quartet. “They know the system.” One area of concern Thompson carries into the season, however, is a shortage in depth and size. t was a milestone year for the Kerr-Vance Academy girls’ varsity basketball team last season as the squad reached the state tournament for the first time since 2008. The joys and thrills 201314 provided, however, have passed and the main area of concern entering this season is depth as the Spartans roster features just eight players. “Depth is a worry,” KerrVance head coach Brian Russell said. “We’re going to have to be real smar t because we can’t get in foul trouble. Can’t end a game with four players on the cour t. That’s my biggest worry.” Russell said he believes his team will be competitive this season, but they’ll have some positions to fill. The Spartans lost two of their top scorers from a year ago as well as their best post player. “We’ve really got to find some people that can handle the ball,” Russell said. “Someone that can handle the point and pick up some of the scoring that we lost from last year.” The third-year Spar tans head coach notes that he’s going to need more production from juniors Macy Lee Johnson and Sophia Naradzay this season. Rachel Ross, an all-conference honorable mention selection from last season, is also set to return. “She’s our most consistent player and best all-around player,” Russell said of Ross. Besides Ross, the roster welcomes back senior Cristin Abbott who last played for the Spartans as a sophomore in 2012-13. “She’s probably our best long-range shooter,” Russell said. “She took a year off and

When she’s making shots, she can really help us against the zone.” Russell said he let his senior captains Ross and Abbott discuss the team’s season goals. They all came to an agreement that striving for another winning season and a return trip to the state playof fs is realistic.

“It’s going to be tough to win the conference,” Russell said. “So if you make that your focus and then you don’t get it then you feel like you haven’t accomplished anything. Our goal is the bigger picture, which I think is good.” Contact the writer at jholt@ hendersondispatch.com.

ince Joseph Cooper became head coach of the Crossroads Christian boys’ basketball program in 2011-12, the Colts have improved each season. In Cooper’s initial season the team won just three games. The next they doubled their victory total, finishing with six. Meanwhile most recently, the team picked up 15 wins in 2013-14. “Hopefully we continue (winning) this year,” Cooper said. “We certainly have the capability to do that. By year four, we’re starting to build the program and bring up the middle school kids and getting them into our system and used to it. So hopefully that’ll continue.” The Colts lost four seniors from last years’ 15-win squad, but only have one senior on

their 2014-15 roster. “Everybody else is fairly young,” Cooper said. “We’re starting to finally get those kids that played in middle school at Crossroads to the varsity program. Of course they were really successful in middle school, so hopefully that will translate this season into some success.” Cooper states that his squad will be modeling themselves after Virginia Commonwealth University’s team on both sides of the ball. “We’re going to be up and down,” Cooper said. “It’s going to be pretty fun to watch. “ If the Colts are in good enough shape, Cooper said he plans to apply full-court defensive pressure throughout an entire game. “I hold the guys to a pretty high standard,” Cooper said. “I know what they can produce and I expect them to

do it on a daily basis. So I’m going to hold them accountable defensively.” Crossroads is expecting immediate contributions from Granville Central transfer Jeremiah Green this season. Green, classified as a junior, was an all-state performer in 2013-14. “He’s going to have a huge impact,” Cooper said. “Whether that’s running point or off the ball, I expect defenses to be keying in on him. So we’re going to move him all around and hopefully keep the defenses guessing. “ Cooper also anticipates Zack Norris to have a productive season. Norris earned a spot on the all-conference team last season and should draw plenty of attention. Contact the writer at jholt@hendersondispatch. com.

Yarbrough era gets underway BY JOHN HOLT

fter coaching the Crossroads Christian middle school boys team last season, Ric Yarbrough transitions into leading the Colts varsity girls program in 2014-15. “My philosophy is up-tempo and pressure defense,” Yarbrough said. “This year we’ll probably slow it down a little bit but I’m still going to try and bring the pressure defense aspect to the game.” Yarbrough, a Franklinton native, played collegiate basketball at North Carolina Wesleyan and he is confident the Colts are capable of achieving their preseason goals. “When I played in college,” Yarbrough said, “we started the first practice by cutting the nets down because everybody wants to be a national champion. So

our goal is a conference championship and hopefully a state championship.” The Colts have two seniors on their roster and thus far Yarbrough has been pleased with what he’s seen. “They’re working hard,” he said. “They’re listening. The only thing I can ask for is to work hard and listen.” Yarbrough feels productive seasons are in store for his point guard Ashton Hayes and senior Michaela Nicholas. Nicholas even has a shot at breaking the school career three-point record by seasons end. Although he wasn’t coaching the Colts’ girls last season, Yarbrough said he paid attention to their results and would attend games. What he noticed was several close defeats. “I felt if they had been in shape a little bit more, a little bit more prepared, they could have came

out on top at the end,” Yarbrough said. “That’s been a big focus this fall, getting in shape. If we can get in shape then things can start to happen for us.” And while many people likely think jumping from the middle school level to the high school level would be a major adjustment, Yarbrough doesn’t see it that way. Instead he only sees one significant change. “The biggest difference is I’m used to coaching boys and now I’m coaching girls,” he said. Regardless of what gender it is, Yarbrough sees a group of talented individuals that have what it takes to mesh with his coaching style. “It’s going to be a good year for Crossroads,” Yarbrough said. or Brad Stevenson, the winter season always is his busiest. Stevenson, the varsity boys and varsity girls’ basketball coach at Victory Christian School is in his second year leading both teams. “It’s pretty tough,” Stevenson said of coaching two teams during the same season. “It’s a headache dealing with it, but I’m here and you’re already here to practice with the kids. Meanwhile his girls’ squad achieved a perfect undefeated season all around. “They worked as a team and it just clicked for them all year long,” Stevenson said. “I was proud of them all.” Entering this winter, the Eagles boys will rely on their speed whereas the girls will look to excel on teamwork. On the girls’ squad, Stevenson has high expectations for junior Allison Stell. “She’s one of the top scorers, top rebounders,” Stevenson said. “She’s just an awesome ball player. She’s smart. he Southern Vance wrestling program welcomes in a new coaching staff as Clarence Dale takes over for Jameil Floyd as head coach and Chris Watson is the team’s new assistant coach. Dale has a wealth of wrestling experience as he coached the sport at Eaton-Johnson Middle School in 1992 and then produced an 80-1 record from 1996-2001 while coaching at Henderson Middle School. “I’m bringing forth some stern discipline,” Dale said. “I’m trying to develop proper discipline, academics and character. I’m looking to teach young men how to be men and how to be men off the mat.” Like Dale, Watson also carries a strong background as he wrestled for Southern Vance in high school and most recently was East Chapel Hill’s head wrestling coach last season. “East (Chapel Hill) it was rebuilding,” Watson said. “I actually loved it there, but it was just something about being home that I wanted to be

at. It feels right.” Dale coached Watson’s older brother in middle school and he feels his new assistant is a valuable addition to the program. “He’s a great young man,” Dale said of Watson. “He’s very enthusiastic. He’s young. At age 26, he brings a lot of extra energy and compassionate to the team.” Jonathan Carlock, Joshua Boyd and Damonte Blash are each expected to lead the Raiders. Blash placed fourth in the state last season and is poised for another strong year. Dale said he’s incorporating weight lifting into the team’s practice plan and thinks that will be beneficial. “Wrestling is one of toughest sports in world,” Dale said. “But wrestling you probably work every muscle in body. The physicality of wrestling is important.” According to Dale, if the squad develops discipline and a desire to win on-and-off the mat, they’ll surprise people at the end. The roster features at least four freshmen and will likely be led by senior Justin Perr y. “He’s going to be a candidate for West Point,” Caudle said. “That’s his goal and he understands how demanding that is. The leadership you’ve got to exhibit, and I think he wants to be a captain. I’ve been impressed just seeing him the last week.” The one worr y Caudle has entering the season is that his team lacks a heavy weight class. “My concern is we’re loaded with lower weight classes,” he said. “I don’t know how we’re going to field the heavy ones. That’s a challenge we have. But wrestling is wrestling.” Back in a once familiar spot, Caudle has proven he’s a winner on the mat. And now his mission is to take his alma mater to new heights.

ddie Caudle knew he wanted to help the Webb wrestling program this season. Yet it wasn’t until the beginning of the month, however, that he found out he’d be the team’s head coach. “One of the mothers called me and said they didn’t have a coach,” Caudle said. “I’ve been retired two years and I was going to see if I could help. When she told me they didn’t have a coach, the next day I came out and met Coach (Ricky) Givens and said ‘I understand you need a coach.”’ While it’s not an ideal situation for any coach to be hired just before a season begins, Caudle is already familiar with the program. He attended Webb back in the 1970s, won a state championship as a wrestler in 1975 and even helped coach the Warriors for four seasons in the early 1990s. “My problem is it’s Contact the writer at been 20 years,” he said. njuries and low numbers played a significant role in the Kerr-Vance wrestling team’s performance last season. The squad’s top performer Jared Hicks got injured and missed a month of time and the Spartans only had five wrestlers to begin with. “It makes it hard,” Kerr-Vance secondyear head coach Charlie Carroll said of having a small team, “but at the same time it’s still an individual sport too. A lot of the guys, they’re good friends. So if you’re losing, but somebody else is winning you’re still living vicariously through that. “So it keeps you going.” Although the team was dealt difficult circumstances last season, Carroll was proud of his team’s resolve. “If you can finish the season with moral then you know you have something to come back with next year,” he said. This season the Spartans have four wrestlers on their roster. Carroll ideally would like to see gradual improvements throughout the season with results coming at the end of the year. “I would say placing two of them in the state would be great,” he said. “But certainly trying to get a win out of all four of them in the state would be even better. The placing is going to take care of itself. But if I could get them there and get a win, then that might lead to another win, which might lead to placing.” Contact the writer at jholt@ hendersondispatch.com.
