The Daily Dispatch

Recently on the way to a meeting, the commentator on the radio asked, “What is a hero and do you have a hero?” He shared several of the heroes in his life. Most of his heroes were leaders of our country during the time he was growing up Woody like President Caudle Dwight D. Executive Eisenhower Director/CEO or President John F. Kennedy, in addition to people like John Glenn (who was an astronaut for those of you too young to remember!). The commentator went on to

What is a hero?

explain how each hero had influenced his life in some manner. After he moved on to another subject, I begin to think about my heroes – those people who have had a big impact on my life. My dad (not my “father” – much too formal for our relationship!), is certainly my biggest and most important hero. I was lucky to have a Dad as good as he was to me. I also thought of a teacher and a coach who were important and have to qualify as heroes to me. My mom, who passed away in November at 94, was a hero — especially in her later years with her desire to be independent and take care of herself. What a lady! But you know as I drove on, I thought about a new friend that I have gotten to know. Now I do not know him well but have had

the opportunity to sit and talk to him and learn a little about him. I know he has been a member of the YMCA for nine or 10 years and comes almost every day. I’ll call my new friend “Jim” since he might not want me to use his real name. Jim is a quiet kind of person. See, Jim has had some major health problems in the past that have slowed his pace down a bit. Now please note that I said his health problems have “slowed” him down but not “stopped” him. Jim always parks out front and slowly eases into the Y, then checks in and always speaks kindly to Sandra and Brenda at the desk. He then moves down the hall to the Wellness Center to begin his workout routine. Everyday he works a little harder

to regain his strength and past abilities. One day, Jim and I were recuperating in the hot tub and got to talking. Jim was wondering if getting into the swimming pool to walk and exercise might help him. Being an old-type aquatics person, I explained how I felt water exercise was so useful because you can do all the motions without gravity pulling against you as it does on dry land. Water exercise is very good for regaining mobility and flexibility after an injury and/or surgery. Jim went on to explain his health issue and how determined he was to regain all his mobility and strength. So now, Jim not only goes through his normal exercise routine in the Wellness Center but spends a great deal

Summer Day Camp registration now under way Lights, camera, action! The Henderson Family YMCA’s Summer Day Camp will be here before you know it! The Summer Day Camp provides all-day care for children ages prekindergarten through rising 8th grade. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Y provides a safe environment for campers and a day filled with daily devotions and fellowship, games and activities, arts and crafts, daily snacks in the morning and afternoon, swimming and swimming lessons, weekly field trips and lots of fun! Lunch is provided each Friday and for most field trips; other weekdays, campers must

bring lunch. Each camper should bring a swimsuit, comb and towel daily. The Y staff asks that campers wear closed toe shoes for safety reasons and that all toys, games and electronic games be left at home. The staff promotes the YMCA’s character traits — caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. Campers are encouraged to share, be kind to one another, make friends, and build self-esteem and confidence — values that last a lifetime. Staff is carefully selected, trained in cardiopulmonary pulmonary resuscitation, use of an automated external defibrillator, and first aid.

The safety of each child is the primary objective. The camp is staffed at a ratio of one counselor to six campers in the younger camp; one counselor to 10 campers in the middle-age camp; and one counselor to 12 campers in the oldest camp. Campers receive a camp T-shirt and camp bag. So come join us for the summer and let your child have an experience of a lifetime! Registration is open now. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $25 per child. The 2011 Summer Day Camp sessions are as follows: • Session #1: June 13-July 1 (closed July 4-8) • Session #2: July 11-29

Sunday, April 10, 2011

• Session #3: Aug. 1-19 YMCA member fees for the summer camp are: • $310/session (first child) • $290/session (second child) • $280/session (third child) Non-member fees for the summer camp are: • $385/session (first child) • $365/session (second child) • $355/session (third child) Discounts are available for multiple children of the same family. In an effort to include all children, the Henderson Family YMCA has a financial assistance program that uses a sliding scale, which is based on need. For more information, please contact the YMCA at (252) 438-2144.

of time in the pool walking and exercising. What a guy! What determination, what dedication! I am sure Jim could just sit down and feel sorry for himself but no, he has the drive and fortitude to get better with no complaints — just hard work. Jim is a hero to me. Every time I start feeling sorry for myself or start looking for an excuse not to exercise, all I have to do is think about Jim. I’ll bet there are some heroes in your life and I bet there are heroes all around you. Pay attention and look around. Those heroes can teach you something and those lessons can have a lasting impact on your life — just like quiet and determined “Jim” has had on mine. Now, that is what a hero is!

Time to get ready for the triathlon Are you participating in the Vance County Relay for Life Triathlon on June 5? Do you need some swim practice to help you get ready for it? The YMCA is currently holding stroke training each Monday from 5-6:30 p.m. in the pool. On the three Mondays directly before the event, the Y will be holding open water swims at the Nutbush State Recreation Area at Kerr Lake. For more information, please call the Y. To sign up for the triathlon, go to www. setupevents.com and click on TRYSPORTS.

‘Make A Splash!’ promotes water safety With summer right around the corner, are you prepared to be in or near the water? According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 3,443 fatal unintentional drownings in the United States in 2007, averaging 10 deaths per day. An additional 496 people died in boating-related accidents from drowning and other causes. The YMCA has part-

nered with USA Swimming to offer a program called, “Make A Splash!” The program provides a water safety program for children who are less fortunate. With the assistance of the program, children will learn to be safe in the water and on the waterfront. The Henderson Family YMCA will also be providing summer swim lessons along with some Make A Splash events.

Register now for summer swim lessons at the YMCA Member Services Desk. Tax-deductible donations to help with the “Make A Splash!” program are welcome. For more information, contact Justin Lovin, aquatics supervisor, at (252) 438-2144 or at justinl@henfamymca. org. This contribution will allow us as a community to save lives, one person at a time.

Membership benefits for our younger members The YMCA offers a drop-in nursery service at no additional charge for members with family memberships. The nursery is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Members of the nursery staff are CPR certified and have many years of experience to ensure the safety of all infants and toddlers. The nursery is not licensed by the state of North Carolina, but registered with the N.C. Division of Child Development. (Additional fees apply if children are not members.) Kids’ Zone is a service to benefit our members and also to provide a safe structured environment for families so everyone can benefit from activities

provided by the YMCA. Kids’ Zone serves children from 6-12 years old. The staff works hard to make the environment a safe, happy, and fun place to be for kids.

Please note that children under 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or adult over 18 years of age if not participating in a scheduled or supervised program.

Each YMCA member is expected to conduct him or herself in a socially acceptable manner while in the facility. Fighting, destroying equipment, abusive language, or illegal use of drugs, alcohol or other controlled substances can result in suspension of membership privileges or other disciplinary action. Also, lending a membership card to another person is prohibited and could result in a revoked membership.

Talking trash Patrons who use the track for walking and exercising are asked to make an extra effort to place trash in the trash containers and replace the lid onto the container to help eliminate the area’s “four legged friends” from pulling the trash out onto the grounds. Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation!

After School Camp: better than being home alone The Henderson Family YMCA provides afterschool care for boys and girls ages pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Currently the YMCA buses pick up campers from Aycock, Clarke, E.M. Rollins, E.O. Young, Carver and Zeb Vance elementary schools; KerrVance Academy; Vance Charter School; Crossroads Christian School; and Eaton-Johnson and Henderson middle schools. Dabney Elementary buses campers to the YMCA. As campers arrive, they are provided a cubby for their book bags and personal items. Each day, they are provided with an afternoon snack and participate in a devotion time, swimming, games and activities, optional homework time, some arts and crafts activities, and time on the playground with swings. But most of all, the YMCA provides a safe environment instead of being home alone. The staff promotes the YMCA’s character traits — caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. Staff is carefully selected, trained in cardiopulmonary pulmonary resuscitation, use of an automated external defibrillator, and first aid. The camp is staffed at a ratio of one counselor to six campers in the younger camp; one counselor to 10

campers in the middle-age camp; and one counselor to 12 campers in the oldest camp. The safety of each child is the primary objective. Registration for the 2010-2011 school year is open. To participate in the After-School Camp program, a parent or guardian needs to come by the YMCA and register at the front desk between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. There is a nonrefundable $25 registration fee per child. The fees and payment schedule are as follows: • YMCA member (one child): $160 per month (due by the first of the month) • Non-member (one child): $180 per month (due by the first of the month) This averages out to $40 per week for members and $45 per week for nonmembers. The monthly fee includes teacher workdays, early dismissals and holiday breaks at no extra charge. Discounts are available for additional children in the same family. In an effort to include all children, the YMCA has a financial assistance program. This program uses a sliding fee scale for membership and child care, based on need. For more information, please call the Henderson Family YMCA at (252) 438-2144.
