The Oude Maas is now one of the cleanest rivers, but it used to be regarded as a trash can. Mudlarking is the urban equivalent of beachcombing (looking on the beach for ‘treasures’ washed up by the sea/river ). I became lately an obsessive serious scavenger enthusiasts The most common item to find is wood, twigs, cables fishing net, lines, single gloves and shoes, styrofoam items, plastic bottles. plastic car parts and lots of wood usually broken and often sitting right on the surface The Oude Maas rises and falls by over 3 meters twice daily as the tide comes in and out, Can be triky on the basalt stones it can be muddy and slippery in places. Hoogvliet may not have a beach but the river the Old Maas runs right south of the city and as called it’s a tidal river, the river banks are uncovered every day. Lately I search the riverbanks for wood that had been dropped into the water and cargo that had fallen off passing boats.. The new role as treasure hunstman. My treasure hunting is this week resulted in scavenger colecting wood next on my list building a Bar-B-Q table for the house.
