WELCOME
In this technological and impersonal era we wish you a word of hearty welcome to your own magazine! One problem of a single editor is: Not what to publish? BUT WHAT TO LEAVE OUT! The only objective of this magazine is to make our viewers happy; we all have become “viewers” and not so more “readers or writers” in the true sense of the word! We are too busy, we just want to look and move on! Our aim is to “save” and to “record” and to spread your contributions around! History is like manure, if you spread it around, it makes things grow and that growth is your contribution for posterity. CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR Met die naderende feesgety word u almal ʼn geseënde Kersfees en Voorspoedige Nuwe Jaar toegebid. We wish you a happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Also to all our friends all over the globe, in the Southern Hemisphere where is “lekker” hot and to our friends in the i e old “snow white” Northern Hemisphere, may you all e lessed! We know some miss “Sunny South Afri a” and due to various reasons live all over the globe. Even I have family in Scotland, Canada, Texas and Australia, so I know what the feeling is during Christmas time when everybody wants to be together! 5
Bruno Martin: Australia Request for images with a Christmas theme Dear Hennie I sear hed through my ‘ar hives’ and ame up with these images I had scanned from slides it is – that’s if my memory serves me orre tly – one of the “The Annual Christmas Braai Spe ial” run y the Natal Bran h of the RSSA. Looking through the back copies of my Natal Newsletters it would set the date to 1 December 1984, the location Eston Station on the Umlaas Road - Mid Illovo narrow gauge line. The attached images show Father Christmas who was actually on the footplate when the train stopped at Eston! I recall it being a rather damp day, so I needed to apply a it of “ olour enhan ing” to the images. I don’t know the names of the people appearing in the images – members of the RSSA Natal branch and their families - so I hope they don’t mind me posting them on your e-mag. Sadly, this was the last time that the RSSA was able to hold this function on that line, for it was closed at the end of February 1985. Kind regards Bruno

WEPENER’S PERAMBULATIONS 20141118 Hi guys. Southbound at Bloemfontein.

for
Harmony Surface Rail at the exchange yard with Grindrod at the old Showgrounds. Between Kalkvlakte and Virginia, beer trucks and fuel for BFX, first time I see a white beer truck?? Just before the Sand River bridge at Virginia, southbound mielies and cement, same spot, northbound empty fuel tankers heading to Gunhill. After this train a white rail trolley bound for Bethlehem was following, did not feel like waiting for a trolley...

20141120 Hi guys.
We got the train again just out of Odendaalsrus at the beginning of the climb up to Friedesheim - the driver making gestures that we should help push from behind to get the train over the gradient. By the time we approached Friedesheim the train was travelling at walking pace but the single diesel soldiered on and brought the train into Welkom where it pulled into a loop. The fitters were on their way and arrived much later and said they could do nothing. So the train was staged in Welkom and was still standing here this morning. Also two shots of Grindrod passing through Welkom station with the ore haulage. There was a huge crane busy lifting two motor coaches of the ex-Kiwi metros off their bogies - why I don't know, will find out. Probably to do with the traction motors ?? Cheers. J & J.

20141120 (1) Hi guys. At Friedesheim we got the return working of the Bothaville pick-up. Pushing back from the timber siding, the cattle waiting for the train to pass before they crossed the line. Then the train pulled onto the main line and pushed back to pick up the assistant. Grindrod was waiting in the exchange yard with a load of waste from Freddies 5 shaft.
Then I got a call from my driver mate. He was on his way back from Wesselsbron / Losdorings with a block load of Kroonstad bound mielies. He told me he was going to stop at Allanridge due the second 34 Brightstar giving problems. The first pic is approaching Allanridge. Just behind the diesels Skoonspruit silos can be seen in the distance. (Well at least when they moved away !!). Then at Allanridge we hopped onto the second diesel to reset a fuel pump failure, I was also told that one of the rear bogies' traction motors was in the process of falling off and that the loco is a total failure - but he was going to try and make it to Welkom. So we left and he told us that he doubted it if he would get over the gradient at Phakisa race way, just before Friedesheim.
Slowly in the distance we could see the train crawling along, picking up speed on the down hills and almost stopping going up the gradients. Cheers. J & J.

20141122 Hi guys. A sign of things to come - heading north between Virginia station and the Sand river bridge, 2x 18E's on the containers. I have said it before and will say it again, I am going to miss the 6E/1's when they are gone, the 18E's don't sound like screaming Suzie's anymore... And after a while it is going to get boring to see one type of unit in one livery on all the TFR trains - well, until they get dirty and get some "character" !!
Then, today, the same train, just before Virginia and 2x SAR 6E's up front and the characteristic sound. The other two units were brought back from BFX after one of them developed traction motor problems and tripped the power and failed. They actually spoil the shot of what could possibly be the last time 2x SAR liveried units work together...
While the containers were disappearing the Welgelee pick-up's diesel came past. Then at Virginia station we found the container train stopped. The reason for this being that the Telemeter had failed and they were waiting for a spare one to be brought from Kroonstad. She left a couple of hours late. Finally a southbound working with more vintage electrics !! The last couple of trucks look like scrap headed for the torches at Bloem, even an "O" truck. Cheers. J & J.

SOUL OF A RAILWAY [SOAR] Just to let you know that Les's latest chapter, with a big contribution from Peter Micenko, has just been posted: https://sites.google.com/site/soulorailway/home/system-7-1/natalspruit-tovereeniging-3 This is Part 3 of southwards from Germiston, the final chapter dealing with the OFS mainline from the Reef and features the changeover from steam (and diesel) to electric traction in 1959, with many photos depicting the electric workings but also, more than a smattering of steam, which amazingly continued to work under the wires as far as Leeuhof for another 20 years after the juice was switched on. Also depicted are the brief but spectacular shows by Germiston engines on the Amatola the East London express - in 1989/90. A fine section of this chapter is that by Peter Micenko that deals with workings around Vereeniging/Leeuhof and also the cross-country steam-worked route from Grootvlei (& Balfour North) to Redan (&Leeuhof).
19
As usual your comments, criticisms and corrections will be gratefully received: please send them directly to Les at a31mazoe@optusnet.com.au May I close with an appeal: we are about to post the next chapter, dealing with what was the busiest freight line on SAR for almost its entire existence. Les has unearthed some wonderful old photos of the steam workings (which ceased in 1959) but they are rather swamped by electrics. If any of you have photos of the steam days on this line and would be prepared to allow them to be used on SoAR they would be very very welcome. With our usual thanks to Bruno Martin for his maps that contribute so much to the understanding of the history of these lines, and to Andrew Deacon for editing our website. Also, a reminder that the main index here: https://sites.google.com/site/soulorailway/

LIVERY: ORANGE EXPRESS / ORANJE SNEL Dear Oom Les Could you help me with a photo in colour of the "old" Orange Express, please? I want to have a model painted - was it chocolate? And cream? - Cream from the windows up to the gutters of the silver painted roof? Thanks very much
Dear Hennie, I have attached three black & white SAR photos of the original Orange Express to show you how the livery was applied to the coaches. I have also sent you four photos of my models of coaches on the Orange Express in colour. PLEASE NOTE that three of the photos show the A-28/AA-29 Dining car KEISKAMA that was one of three in use on that train and where the Indian Red colour is a little on the light side on my models. The real "Indian Red" was slightly darker. The fourth photo shows a C-22 articulated saloon that reflects the true "Port Wine" colour that was applied to this train. It is shown just above my Blue Train models in my display case. If you look closely at the three Black & White photos of the real train, you will notice a dark strip between the cream and the silver roof. This strip was also Indian Red but on my small HO models I left it off because it was unnecessary to go to such fine detail on the model's paintwork. On a larger scale model I would fit the red beading strip.

When the Orange Express first went into service after the 1947 Royal Tour, the dark brown and cream livery was initially retained just very briefly. The coaches were placed in Bloemfontein Mechanical Shops for repainting in the Indian Red and Cream livery which can be regarded as the livery of the original train. The dark brown and cream period was very brief. I have never seen original photos of the real train in colour. All my photos of that train were taken with black & white film. I hope that the above will be of use to you. Groetnis

Hello again Hennie, I forgot to mention that the chocolate brown and cream livery was used for the 1947 Pilot Train and after that tour, some of the C-22 saloons were taken directly into Orange Express service - hence the early but brief use of the choc brown and cream livery. As I said earlier, the coaches were put through the Paint Shop in Bloemfontein to change the chocolate brown to Indian Red. Cheers Oom Les Dear Oom Les, Thank you very much. As a boy I grew up in Durban. I first went to Stella Park Primary School and then to Port Natal; the first Afrikaans Primary School in Durban. The schools were along Umbilo Rd. After school the bus would travel along Umbilo Rd and once it passed Umbilo Railway Station and Blue Ribbon Flour, the bus went with a bridge over to South Coast Rd along the railway line past Rossburg Railway Station. I loved to watch trains, the green fireless engine shunting at the Escom Power station opp. Umbilo station and the various trains going out or into town. It was there that I fell in love with the Orange Express; all the passenger coaches were in various shades of varnished teak to dark rown. Well it’s een quite I long time and I still love her ... that is my wife and the Orange Express. In about 1961 all passenger trains were changed to the popular Dove Grey and Indian Red – in various shades and more or less took the livery of the Orange Express. Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

Francois Matthe端s Wa nommer 141 Jade Wilson Alexander James Knight - type please Alexander James Knight With a 1xx number it would have been a A-37 dining car and this is not it. This is clearly a kitchen/staff coach. Someone must have renumbered for some reason which I suspect was converted to a single car. Note the absence of the pantry on the right. It could have been given a 141 number to follow the AC-1 numbers the last number being 133. Alexander James Knight What is the story with this coach? Is she being moved to workshop? Francois Matthe端s Alexander James Knight, yes, they shunted this wagon back to Wictra. There are 3 refurbished wagons standing there for a while now...will try and get a pic...
Ek dink mense is erg oningelig of luister bloot nie. André Kritzinger, Philmar du Plessis, Japie Terblanche and 33 others like this. Deon Gouws Ek stem saam Martin
80
Andre Somers Maartin ek stem saam met jou. Net n paar vrae. Toe daai trein die stasie binnekom wou my ma nie eens inklim nie so vuil was daai trein buite.

Martin Nel Steve, ek hoor jou. Steve Compion Dankie Philmar. Feite is feite. Pierre Pieterse Goed gestel!,

My heartfelt thanks for sharing their own and historical pictures from their collections: * Bob Adams * Eugene Armer * Peter Bagshawe * Charles Baker * John Batwell * Malcolm Best (for some brilliant colour shots of now long-gone steam) * Martin Drescher * Len du Preez * John Faulkner * Ryan Fincham 95
* Phil Girdlestone * J. Stuart Grossert * Hennie Heymans * Bob Hogan * Luca Lategan * Sue Lawrence * Robert Maidment-Wilson * Jacobus Marais * John Middleton * Dennis Mitchell * Richard Niven * Hannes Paling * Leith Paxton * Ian Roberts * Terry Rowe * Gary Ruddy * Jezmundo Smith * Les Smith * Trevor Staats (also for some great video clips) * Anthony Stanton * Logan Stone * Lourens Sturgeon * Hilton Teper * Chris van Wyk * Derek Walker My apologies to the people I may have omitted. Most thanks must go to the late members of the 1930s Railway Group, people like Arthur Arnold, A. Butchard, S.H. (Silvy) Carter, Frank Garrison, D.F. (Frank) Holland, Dr. Eric Manken, A. Spence and several others, who left us a rich heritage of some incredible old photographs that were made available from the collections of Pierre de Wet, Richard Gillatt, Leith Paxton, Ian Pretorius, Les Pivnic and others. And, of course, to the late Frank Holland, without whose two great volumes on the "Steam Locomotives of the South African Railways" this project would have never even happened.
17 November at 13:05 路 Like Sentra Rand Yard: Jaco Holtzhausen

Hennie Heymans Richard Niven - thanks for the nice photo you shared with us! I had a sneaky feeling that SentraRand has become a white elephant. I had asked the question earlier this month: "Was Sentra Rand being used? On the way to the airport from Pretoria one always saw trains crossing the free way on to Sentr Rand - now one sees no goods trains. I think the railways are only doing "block freight". Richard Niven That is just terrible Hennie!! What has ever become of that once great railway!! Its generally the same for freight here in UK. Mainly block loads and that's about it so not much freight around. However passenger trains are by the millions. My station in Edinburgh just cannot cope anymore with the amount of passengers. I will post a few more photos of Sentrarand which I took from that plane in 2008 Anton Hitge Dit is sleg vir Sentra Rand Pieter van Rooyen En om te dink dat hierdie werf veronderstel was om slegs die eerste fase te wees...daar moes nog Sentra Rands langsaan gebou word, so was die beplanning!!!! Pierre Engelbrecht Moet wees punt A tot punt B. Hennie Heymans Richard Niven - thanks very much, I would like to do an article in our electronic magazine on Sentra Rand. Hennie Heymans Richard Niven - I might be "off Topic" but on YouTube I have watched various videos about the various British Rail Co's. I have watched Edenburgh Station and its trains on various videos. I watch a lot of British & Dutch Rail Videos - sorry we don't have much to watch these days. Richard Niven Hennie, yes Edinburgh is my main station and that's where I start and finish everyday. Unfortunately we are not allowed to take photos or video while we are driving so I'm afraid I cannot post much on Youtube, sorry

Sal probeer uitvind. 30 November at 00:38 Hennie Heymans In the 1950's, Willie Engelbrecht & Richard Niven, I can remember an incident reported in the papers about a couple of Double Deckers between Cape Town and Jhb. The crux of the story was when they came to Du Toitskloof Pass the busses were just too high to pass under an overhang. The traffic was blocked and a little boy said: "Daddy why don't they just blow the tires down a bit?" It helped! I also know that apart from Jhb, the SAR, also had double deckers. I will ask Mr Pivnic.
