WELCOME Consider yourself welcome and join in the fun. We can’t offer you the real clicketyclack of the railways, or the hustle and bustle of a crowed railway station with porters pushing or pulling their trolleys, excited passengers looking for their compartment on the passenger list, or the aroma of the station restaurant (Remember the pie, chips & gravy finished off with railway coffee?) or the smell of a clean compartment on the Trans-Karoo or just the excitement of just being there watching the spectacle of steam in action. No, we can only invite you to come with us and share what’s on the menu. They say in Afrikaans: “hunger is the best cook”. On that culinary note come along and see what we have scraped together for you – some are from the past and other are brand new.

WHO ARE WE? You may have wondered who we are. We are three chaps who, with your help outside in the field and on the rails, work and compile to complete this magazine. Not one of us is a railwayman or a former railwayman. We simply love trains like other people love aircraft or motor cars.

Mr Les Pivnic As novices regarding the South African Railways and its successors in title we have asked Mr Les Pivnic to be our patron. Why do we need a patron? Well he is an accomplished historian and a former deputy-curator of the SAR Museum in its heyday when it was in Johannesburg. Such a pity I never spent enough time in the Johannesburg Railway Museum. I loved to watch the various SAR models on exhibition. He never ceases to “educate” us on the finer detail and he corrects us when we make mistakes. In short you can say he keeps us on the right track! Helping me is:

Johan Jacobs During the 60’s we lived alongside the railway lines between President and Driehoek stations near Germiston. Here my younger brother and I grew up alongside the many trains that passed our house every day and night. Our love for trains started here! We painted a steam cabin on one of our outside buildings’ wall and often played “engine-engine”. During my school days I travelled regularly to Krugersdorp on the local passenger train to visit my grandparents. After school my brother became a stoker on steam locomotives at Germiston Steam Depot. I spent quite a few times 5

with him on the footplate especially when they were shunting. Whilst my brother pursued a career on the railway as a stoker and later as a railway policeman, I instead joined the SADF. Later in my life during my service in the SADF I travelled regularly on the TransKaroo and Trans-Natal trains and also travelled a few times by train to Namibia. It is an honour for me to be part of the Facebook group ‘Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorweë/ South African Railway and the monthly e-magazine ULOLIWE Then, I am also a keen aviation enthusiast and love vintage prop planes! I am married for 33 years to Jeanette.

Ballistic Lab, KwaZulu-Natal (Nov. 2000)

Glenn Elsden in 2001 as a member of the SAP Natal Service Shooting Association (NSSA)

Glenn William Elsden was a member of the "old” South African Police Force as well as the "new" South African Police Service for nearly 24 years (Dec. 1977 – May 2011) where he held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel at the time of his resignation. He is a specialist in ballistics and a real proverbial "officer and gentleman". Glenn served with distinction in various departments of the SAP first in the uniform branch, commencing as an ordinary Constable on patrol at Randburg Police Station (JHB) where he also performed ‘detached service’ in surrounding townships when uprisings there where the order of the day. Later Glenn was transferred to Police Head Office (Wachthuis) in January 1983 and later in mufti to the SA Criminal Bureau (SACB) in Pretoria where he enrolled in a 36

year in-service training programme at the Ballistic Unit to pursue a career as a Forensic Ballistic Specialist. As a Ballistic Expert he served for the remaining years of his career - first in Pretoria and later, from 1994 onwards, at the decentralized Forensic Science Laboratory in KwaZulu-Natal as 2nd in Command, Head of the Ballistic Training Division, and Regional Coordinator of IBIS (Integrated Ballistic Identification System). In KZN he performed work of sterling quality and could be regarded as a pioneer in that province. Glenn is now a self-employed Education Adviser (t/a EDU-Adviser) dedicated to the goal of guiding and motivating learners to reach their full potential, both in their personal and professional lives. He has written a short memoir (eBook) of his experiences in the SAP, Memoir of an Apartheid Cop – downloadable for free in various formats at Smashwords. One of his favourite pastimes is graphic and website designing, a hobby which eventually progressed into a supplementary freelance business. His high standard of professionalism was brought to my notice. He was approached during February 2014, to assist with the design and development of a new website for the old South African Police and he launched the project successfully without hesitation. He also accepted the offer to become an associate of eNongqai Publications as Graphic Designer and Webmaster. Like me, Glenn is also passionate about the History of the Police (and the railways) which we are trying to preserve for coming generations. – HBH.

WEPENER’S PERAMBULATIONS 20140327 Hi guys. On approaching Bloemhof we noticed a speeding train heading north. We caught up to it at Grasslands and noticed the points and route indicator were set for the loop, so a crossing was going to take place. Slowly an empty load of CR ore wagons behind 4x 10E’s pulled into the loop. Not too long after this the pick-up came past with a load of mielies and one 6E upfront. Buy now the empty train had trundled off out of sight. Soon we caught up with her again, stopped at a red signal. Also the southbound signals were green again. This time a Luxrailer trolley sped past. The signals were then set up for the empties to proceed and so did we. All along the line huge trees have been removed from the railway reserve, all the nice braai spots are now gone... Then, near Kingswood the north facing signals were red again and south green, so the empties we going to be held back again. Soon a load of containers came past behind 2x 6E's. Plenty of refrigerated containers in the consist. At Kingswood the signals were green for the empties, but only for a while and near Drie Ruiters the route indicator showed to the loop, another crossing. In the distance we noticed that something different was on its way. Soon we realized it was light blue PRASA 18E's with a passenger train. Operating did not want to tell us anything about this special but at least they told us there was another special passenger on its way and plenty of other trains as well. Why the secrecy - we would like to know - both trains looked like empty coaching stock and our other connections have told us they were heading down to Cape Town for the Jazz festival. At Makwassie a very smart looking 18E was ready to depart with another pick-up load of mielies, there were also wine tankers in this consist. Standing in Makwassie station we found the Plasserail Dynamic StopFexpress, it was knock-off time for them. The track master told me they had started at Leeuhof and were slowly working their way to Fourteen Streams. They also told me that the derailment near Boskuil was from Kilometre point 88 to 110 - just do the maths yourself - 22Km of sleepers were replaced! Back next to the line just after Makwassie the route indicators once again put the empties onto the loop, these guys were having a slow shift! 8

At Leeudoringstad, a load of rail bolsters behind a single 6E, were being held back for what turned out to be the other special - the Premier Classe. Unfortunately we had to leave as there were even more trains on their way... Greetings and hoots from all the crews. We have heard that the last Daylight Sitter leaves Johannesburg for Durban tomorrow and returns on Sunday - this service is being withdrawn... Cheers. J & J.

20140328 Hi guys. We decided to head down to the Free State mainline to try and get the Algoa. The timing was quite nice and we managed to get her speeding through Bosrand, friendly waves from the crew. According to the timetable I have she is about right time, some people in the Diner.

13

I can remember when I was at school and the holidays came - train travel!! Unfortunately no more... The first 2 photos are just something "else" - just to show that it still is nice to live in Africa, even with all the crap - where else are you going to get wild animals 15 minutes from your house?? Lastly I have been having hassles with e-mails bouncing and the like - If you still want to receive my sightings please reply to this mail - I am going to clean up my address book and make a new one. I know there are plenty of guys out there that use my photos - but still - please reply - then I know you receive them and I have the correct addresses. Thanks. Jacque & John.

20140404 Hi guys. Between Boskuil and Drie Ruiters we got a northbound load of mielies, note all the new ballast, this is where the derailment of a while back took place. All seems sorted now, temporary speed restrictions have been lifted. Next, another northbound load, this time ore wagons and Lime at Kingswood. The track master and his gang were busy here, hence the train running on the loop. The 18E's are heading north travelling at an incredible speed.

Greetings from all the crews as usual, the ballast tamping machines are near Bloemhof. The Johannesburg bound Algoa departing after a short stop at Virginia. The Premier Classe coaches are also in the consist. She is running about 90 minutes late. On the left you can see the ruined goods shed... A southbound load of fuel went past behind 2x 34 class diesels, too far for a photo, the diesels are probably heading to the workshops in Bloem. Also a southbound load of mielies was missed. Then our first visit to Whites since its closure on 2014/03/31, strange not to have a chat with the friendly TCO... At least there is still a security guard here - so the vandals will stay away for a little while longer. Also the first train we get running with CS 90 through Whites en-route to Kroonstad. Mostly fuel tankers. There is a 15Km/h speed restriction through Whites. Virginia is the next station to close; the guys have been busy there all week. Temporary white crosses have been erected over the signals while the switch over to CS 90 takes place. We have been invited to visit the TCO's in Kroonstad. They told us the following: WelgleĂŤ is switching over after Virginia, Brandfort which will fall back to Bloemfontein.

The semaphore stations north of Kroonstad might still take several years to switch over due to difficulties with the points and signals that are worked by the lever frames. Good news to us!! Most of the lever frames have had

electric motors installed to operate the points as the female TCO's can't pull the levers... Sasolburg is going to be controlled by Leeuhof soon. Nothing new at RRL or Sheltam or Harmony Surface Rail. Lastly the 34 class is at Friedesheim with the timber empties. Plenty of track maintenance going on here as well.

Cheers. J & J.

A thought: Just look at the stations like Whites later on. If we do get a passenger service like in the old days it will cost billions to refurbish them or build new ones. Why can’t we preserve old stations? Why can we let them to old railwaymen; community organisations or security companies? Why can’t there be a service say from Hennenman to Kroonstad or Hennenman to Bloemfontein. Taxis are expensive and with the new toll roads let’s get people back on the track - HBH

Friedesheim

20140416 Hi Guys. Quite a lot - so two instalments. E1444 & sister on a load of empty fuel tankers and beer trucks heading through Virginia, en-route to Kroonstad, ex Bloemfontein.

34-409 returning from Bothaville with the pick-up. To the left of the diesel the line heading to Bultfontein can be seen, this is at Rooiblom / Ancona. This train was supposed to shunt the timber at Friedesheim but the crew's time was up and the train was staged in Odendaalsrus and only continued the following day. Have a look at the remains of the goods shed... A couple of days later and 34-409 is heading back to Kroonstad light loco after doing the Mondi timber shunt at Odendaalsrus, this is at Welkom. Harmony Surface Rail at the exchange yards, waiting for Sheltam to bring in a load of ore. At Hennenman, heading south, also in the consist a 34 class heading to the workshops. Another southbound movement, in the same spot and yet another diesel heading to BFX. These units are for the Kroonstad bound working of the car train later in the day. As far as I know only one 34 class is 27

allowed to be hauled dead on a train, thus two trains and two Hennenman's old silo can be seen as well.

diesels.

A couple of shots of Sheltam between Saaiplaas 4 and 5 shafts with empty hoppers, this is where the mine line crosses over the Transnet line to Whites. It seems as if the waste rock has been stopped at 4 shaft for the time being and waste is now being hauled from 5 shaft, as well as reef. A train load of waste is pictured here, this has to be moved clear in order to allow the reef to be loaded. Continued in part two... A couple of more pics of Sheltam. One of Harmony's locos heading back from the exchange yard to the loco depot with a faulty hopper. RRL at Niemandsland. This train has just come from the exchange yard at the show grounds, the locos has to run around the train here to continue onwards to Odendaalsrus. One of the vacuum pipes was leaking and the load was delayed quite some time. Northbound between Whites and Hennenman a load of brand new refurbished mielie trucks. Also 2x 35 classes in the consist, returning from BFX workshops. One was painted in the new livery, the other still blue. Seems like 2x 35's are allowed on a load. Then another northbound load near Kalkvlakte. This is a load bound for the Ncala Corridor, even in their own wagons. There is a CGR 1906 piece of rail at the level crossing. Just before the Sand River bridge at Virginia, light locos heading to Bloem for the car train. A 30km/h "scrap" train for Bloemfontein heading through Kalkvlakte. Plenty of "flat wheels" in the consist. This train is a killer to work... Another HSR loco at old Brand shaft. 34-058 shunting the timber at the old Welkom goods shed. Lastly RRL heading through Friedesheim with a load of empties bound for Freddies 1 shaft at Odendaalsrus. Last week there was a derailment near Christiana. This caused the northbound Trans Karoo to be delayed for several hours. Apparently the passengers ran out of food and drink and Shosholoza Meyl did nothing...

28

Also due the riots near Bloemhof / Christiana and the derailment the Cape Town bound Blue Train came via Orkney - Westleigh - Bloemfontein - Kimberley - unfortunately all in darkness... Cheers. J & J.

Comment One is proud to see what the people at the Lord Milner Hotel are doing to preserve our history. It is a very historic place to visit and a nice rest along the way to, or from, Cape Town. Jimmy Logan is the man who put Matjesfontein (I prefer the original Dutch spelling) on the map. His farm Tweedside is nearby along the N1. Olive Schreiner had a little house here. It is so tranquil and quiet. During the Anglo-Boer War many British troops were stationed here and at Memorial (an unused halt) there are various historic graves. Lawrence G Green also did much to publicise Jimmy Logan and Matjesfontein.1 If you are interested get the book from a library and read it. Pure enjoyment and nostalgia – HBH.

The South African Class 6J 4-6-0 of 1902 is a South African steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Cape Colony. In 1902 fourteen 6th Class bar framed steam locomotives with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement were placed in service by the Cape Government Railways. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered and reclassified to Class 6J.[1][3][5] Manufacturer The 6th Class was designed at the Salt River works of the Cape Government Railways (CGR) at the same time as the 7th Class. While the 7th Class was conceived primarily as a goods locomotive, the 6th Class was intended to be its fast passenger service counterpart.[1] The fourteen 6th Class locomotives that were placed in service by the CGR in 1902 were built by Neilson, Reid and Company. They were practically identical to the two bar framed locomotives built by Sharp Stewart and Company in 1900 that became 55

the South African Railways (SAR) Class 6F, and they were visually identifiable as second generation 6th Class locomotives by their higher running boards without driving wheel fairings.[1][2] Distribution Four of them were numbered in the range from 537 to 540 for the Midland System of the CGR. The other ten were numbered 155, 160 and in the range from 287 to 294 for the Western System.[1][4] It would appear that the CGR’s Western System was more concerned with having unbroken number ranges than the CGR itself was about allocating different classifications to dissimilar locomotives, even when they had different wheel arrangements. Of these Western System engine numbers, 155 and 160 had been used before on two 6th Class locomotives that had been sold to the Oranje-Vrijstaat Gouwerment-Spoorwegen (OVGS) in 1897.[1][4] Class 6 sub-classes The Union of South Africa was established on 31 May 1910, in terms of the South Africa Act. One of the clauses in the Act required that the three Colonial Government railways, the CGR, the Natal Government Railways and the Central South African Railways, also be united under one single administration to control and administer the railways, ports and harbours of the Union. While the South African Railways (SAR) came into existence in 1910, the actual classification and renumbering of all the rolling stock of the three constituent railways required careful planning and was only implemented with effect from 1 January 1912.[3][6]

When these fourteen locomotives were assimilated into the SAR in 1912, they were renumbered in the range from 635 to 648 and reclassified to Class 6J.[2][3][4] The rest of the CGR’s 6th Class locomotives, together with the Central South African Railways (CSAR) Classes 6-L1 to 6-L3 locomotives that had been inherited from the OVGS via the Imperial Military Railways (IMR), were grouped into thirteen more subclasses by the SAR. The 4-6-0 locomotives became SAR Classes 6, 6A to 6H, 6K and 6L, the 2-6-2 locomotives became Class 6Y and the 2-6-4 locomotives became Class 6Z.[2][3][4] Service The Class 6J has been described as the most successful of the bar framed 6th Class locomotives. The CGR placed them in service on the Cape mainline and for several years they hauled the Dining Car Express Train that left Cape Town every 56

Wednesday morning for the Orange River Colony and Johannesburg the Transvaal, running via De Aar, Noupoort and Springfontein.[1][5]

Liveries illustrated The main picture shows CGR (Western System) 6th Class no. 292, later renumbered to SAR Class 6J no. 642, painted in the CGR's green livery on the Cape’s Dining Car Express Train. It is a colourised photograph that was used as a post card, on which some artistic licence had been used with red wheels and a red headlight reflector. The following picture shows one in SAR black livery in later years.[1] Also illustrated is a first class annual season ticket, issued to Mr. W. Smith on 25 January 1909, that allowed the holder to travel between Cape Town and Hopefield, Eendekuil, Caledon, Franschhoek, Carnarvon,Prieska and Vryb urg, literally all over the Western System lines in the Western Cape and into the Northern Cape Colony.

20E: CSR ZHUZHOU ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE CO LTD: PHIL DU PLESSIS Brief Introduction of 20E Locomotive The contract of 95 20E locomotives come into effective on 18 th December 2012, 10 of locos are imported from China and 85 locos will be manufactured in South Africa. The first loco was completely manufactured and ceremony was held on 20th August 2013, only 8 months after Effective Date of the contract. 

First Two locomotives was delivered since end of September 2013 from CSR ZELC and arrived in Durban by 14th November 2013.

The 2nd batch three locomotives arrived in Durban by 15th December 2013.

The 3rd batch two locomotives arrived in Durban by 8th February 2014,

Loco no. 20010 is estimated to arrive in Durban before 25th April, 2014.

In the past 5 months, TFR and CSR have completed all the type tests and started the fault free running test, and test results show that the performance of 20E locos are safe, reliable. The design and manufacture of 20E locomotive are based on AC drive electric locomotive platform of CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd., and considering the actual railway operating requirements in South Africa.

Main Technical Feature 

20E Locomotive main circuit adopts the IGBT module (6.5kV/750A) composed of four quadrant rectifier and inverter; Main circuit can be divided into AC traction circuit and a DC traction circuit; Each traction inverter module supply power to a traction motor realizing axle control. 59

Auxiliary circuit: Auxiliary circuit branch can be divided into constant frequency and constant voltage and frequency conversion variable voltage branch. Both of them are provided power by auxiliary inverter module integrated within the main converter. The auxiliary inverter can achieve full fault redundancy. Locomotives set up three phase AC380V socket and DC110V socket for shop supply, and also set up 110 v control circuit emergency power supply socket at the end of locomotive. Multiple control: Though WTB bus Locomotive can achieve the control and display for 8 Mu-locomotive consist, and can multiple connect with diesel locomotive via AAR standard control. The car body adopts the whole bearing structure all made of steel plate, and steel sheet moulding compound of all steel welded structure, body compression load of 4.45 MN, MN tensile load 4MN.

Tranz Metro From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia

Tranz Metro

Tranz Metro, part of KiwiRail, is the operator of Metlink suburban trains owned by the Greater Wellington Regional Council in the Wellington Region of New Zealand. Tranz Metro operates the five-line 154-kilometre (96 mi) Metlink network, fanning north out of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, as far as Waikanae in the north and Masterton in the east. On average, 930,000 trips are made on Metlink trains each month. It claims 95% on-time performance for services arriving within 5 minutes of schedule. History Electric suburban services began in July 1938, following the opening of the Tawa flat deviation of the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT). The Johnsonville Line, the former route of the NIMT out of the capital, was the first line to be electrified. By 1940 the NIMT (the present Kapiti Line) had been electrified as far north as PaekÄ kÄ riki. The Hutt Valley Line was electrified to Taita in 1953 to coincide with major state housing developments in the area. In 1954, the Wairarapa railway line was diverted 81

between Petone and Haywards via Waterloo and Taita, with the old line truncated to Melling to form the Melling Line. Electrification was extended to Upper Hutt in 1955. Also in 1955, the 9 km Rimutaka Tunnel between Upper Hutt and Featherston opened, bypassing the laborious Rimutaka Incline and reducing the travel time from Wellington to Featherston to just over one hour, and from Wellington to Masterton to one-and-three-quarter hours. The Wairarapa Connection service started nine years later, after morning and afternoon peak services started to exceed the 176-seat capacity of the diesel railcars then used. The NIMT electrification was extended to Paraparaumu in the early 1980s. Ownership Suburban passenger rail services in Auckland and Wellington were a part of the New Zealand Railways Department, while bus services were owned either by city corporations or the Railways. With the restructuring of the department into the New Zealand Railways Corporation in the early 1980s, suburban bus and rail services came under the Cityline brand as part of the Corporation's Rail Passenger Group. Further restructuring of the rail network came in the 1990s, and the suburban rail operations were renamed CityRail after they were transferred to New Zealand Rail Limited in 1991. That year the Auckland Regional Council bought the Auckland CityRail fleet and contracted New Zealand Rail to run it, extending the contract until 1993 and again for 10 years until 2003. In 1993 New Zealand Rail Limited was privatised, renamed Tranz Rail in 1995, with CityRail rebranded Tranz Metro. On 15 December 2000, as part of management changes at Tranz Rail, the company split Tranz Metro into wholly owned subsidiaries Tranz Metro Auckland Ltd and Tranz Metro Wellington Ltd, with the intention of selling them. Stagecoach New Zealand and GWRC announced their intention to bid for the Wellington company, but both were barred by the Commerce Commission from doing so. Tranz Rail did not bid for the Auckland contract when it expired in 2003. Australian-based Connex (later Veolia and now Transdev) won the contract, and took over from 23 August 2004. In 2004 Toll Holdings of Australia bought a majority shareholding in Tranz Rail and renamed the company Toll NZ, and on 1 July 2008 it was bought (less the Tranz Link trucking and distribution arm) by the government and renamed KiwiRail. In October 2009 Cabinet agreed on a Metropolitan Rail Operating Model, which requires the operating contract to be "contestable". This is in line with Auckland's rail contract. An agreement signed in July 2011 transferred ownership of KiwiRail's station buildings, excluding Wellington Railway Station, to the Greater Wellington Regional Council, along with the D/DM class and EM/ET units (the FP/FT units were already owned by GWRC). KiwiRail retains ownership of the tracks, platforms, electric traction and signalling systems. The assets were valued at $107.5 million. Ownership of the fleet transferred on 1 July 2011 to Greater Wellington Rail Ltd, formed by Greater Wellington Regional Council in 20063.

English Synopsys A new science centre has been unveiled in Matjesfontein. Two railway carriages have been used for this purpose. It provides a laboratory and sleeping quarters. A further 10 coaches have been obtained to travel the country and to bring science to people anywhere near a railway line; much like the Pelopepha Health Train. Leon Croukamp one of the leaders of this project is also a man interested in trains and model railways.

A Dream for Touws River: Willie Marais

Above: Willie’s impression of a Metro train at Touws River. They are campaigning for a train service to run between Touws River and Worcester. There are many poor people in Touws River who would like to travel between the two centres. From a historical perspective the communities have built their lives along the railway.

Passengers stranded after Eurostar forced to cancel services Passengers warned by social media to avoid St Pancras Station 130,000 people planned to use the Eurostar over the long weekend Drivers faced long traffic jams as the Easter getaway continues An estimated 3.4 million Britons planning to take an Easter break

By Jim Norton and Tania Steere Published: 01:03 GMT, 18 April 2014 | Updated: 01:05 GMT, 18 April 2014 The great Easter getaway got off to a nightmare start last night as travel chaos hit one of Britain’s busiest stations. Thousands of Eurostar passengers were stranded at St Pancras station in London after a man died on a train line in France and a train broke down. Stations, motorways and airports are likely to remain congested over 109

the break, with more than six million Britons planning trips. Eurostar had to cancel 14 trains, leading to pandemonium as queues snaked around the station and passengers were hit with delays of up to eight hours.

+3Passengers stranded at St Pancras station after services were cancelled A fatality near Lille in northern France involving a French high-speed train resulted in diversions and delays to Eurostar. Then, just as services were getting back to normal, a Eurotunnel passenger shuttle train broke down in the Channel Tunnel. By 6.45pm, the company announced it was ceasing trains until today. An announcement on the Eurostar website said: ‘Eurostar services are now closed for the day and regrettably no further passengers are being accepted at our stations. Please do not travel to our stations this evening.’

110

Motorists using the M25 were also stuck Stressed motorists sit for hours in in long traffic jams as the Easter getaway stationary traffic as the Easter getaway continues continues

But passengers, many of whom knew nothing about the cancellations, voiced their anger on social media. Sarah Martin tweeted: ‘Really disappointed with complete lack of communication about cancellation of trains and options. No contingency plans.’ Pictures posted on social media showed long lines of passengers snaking around the terminal. British Transport Police said officers have been dispatched to assist with crowd control. A BTP spokesman said last night: ‘A number of officers have been at the station throughout the day assisting with crowd control and supporting rail staff and passengers, and will remain there as long as is required.’ Trains were expected to begin running again as normal this morning, with the first train scheduled to leave St Pancras at 6.18am. A spokesman for Eurostar said the company had worked hard to ensure that 44 services still ran yesterday. He added: ‘Inevitably there will be a backlog, but we will do everything we can to help the passengers affected.’ More than 130,000 passengers were expected to travel on Euro-star over the weekend. Meanwhile, millions took to the roads last night, with the weekend likely to see as many as 16 million cars on the move. About 3.4 million Britons are set to take an Easter break in the UK involving at least one overnight stay. In addition, 6.5 million Britons are planning day trips over the holiday period. For those staying at home, today is expected to be the best day of the holiday for weather, with cooler, cloudier and wetter conditions as the weekend goes on. Share or comment on this article. Selfie that went wrong -

Now that's photobooting! The moment foolish teen taking a selfie by the tracks gets kicked in the head by an angry train engineer. Jared Michael was struck in the head by the engineer of a single locomotive car and uploaded the video to YouTube.

By James Nye Published: 14:49 GMT, 16 April 2014 | updated: 17:36 GMT, 16 April 2014 A young man who tried to take a selfie right next to the tracks while a huge locomotive passed by him has learned the hard way why it's a bad idea. Jared Michael received a well-deserved boot to his head from the train's engineer who yelled at him as he motored past the foolish would-be photographer. Uploading the video to YouTube, Michael attempted to explain that he 'tried to take a selfie while a train passed a 'safe' distance behind'. But conceded, 'I guess I was still too close and got kicked in the head. I messed up'. Scroll Down for Video

125

+6 Selfie time: The young man prepares his angles for the picture of a train he is planning However, despite his admission of a lesson well-learned following the engineer's justified swing, Michael's first reaction as captured in his video is amazement. Instead of saying 'Ow!', or 'Maybe I was too close to the train', Michael exclaims, 'Wow! I got kicked in the head! I think I got that on film!'

Here it comes: The train appears in view as the young man no doubt is getting excited about his upcoming picture

126

Here comes trouble: The train's engineer appears on the side of the train ready to kick the kid

Smack: The boot of the conductor connects cleanly with the young man

127

Follow-through: The train speeds past and the young man's head feels the full force of the conductors boot But, before everyone holds this up as another example of the extreme lengths people will now go to for the perfect selfie, some have joked they see the hand at work of America's prankster in chief, Jimmy Kimmel. Indeed, Cooper Fleishman, the editor of the Dailydot tweeted that he would find it amusing if the video was revealed to be a set-up, filmed on an ABC studio lot and that the engineer was in fact Kimmel. The ABC late-night host has a past history for viral internet pranks - during the Sochi Winter Olympics he managed to get a picture of a wolf roaming the athletes village to go viral. In fact it was a fake, but that did not stop multiple outlets running with the image. Some Londoners might joke that it's the sort of location for which they would probably pay a premium. This railway line is so close to shops and homes that huge trains are forced to squeeze past market traders, pedestrians and playing children. The route in the centre of Hanoi, Vietnam, cuts through tight streets in the city's old town district, heading to Long Bien Bridge.

Comment: I experience the same scene in Taiwan. We were doing a course in a military camp near Peitou and a friend and I took the train to Taipei – instead of a taxi – and we had the same experience. Once I travelled by train between Ankara and Istanbul and there I felt if we were going through Koffiefontein ... Through one town there was a caravan with camels to the left of me and the right of me and the train steadily going on their trip minding their own business ... HBH
