The Voice On the verge of public health crisis, our actions have become so limited. The ambitions we once had were boxed within the four temples of our home. Our widest visions become limited in the screens of our phones. And the voices we once tried to echo out to the world were now concealed behind the mask. In this pandemic, our faith dances in the compromise of physical freedom over protection. In the school year 2019-2020, The Voice was once heard after its long hiatus for three years. And on 2020-2021, hurdles of immense adjustments brought by the advent of global shutdown left The Voice into a year of silence. But now, The Voice is back! For over a year of concealment, finally! We are gradually revitalizing our confidence and audacity. The Voice will again be redeemed! As humanity progresses amid the public health crisis, we were silenced by the mask we wear every day. But, not for long, antidotes will make us mobilized again! WE WILL BE UNMASKED! and so does this magazine! This season, Kolehiyo ng Pantukan unravels to you The Voice Unmasking Edition! Whilst everyone lives under the fear of COVID-19, the KNP has been pushing for advancements and major breakthroughs in our masked years. And now, we are ready to take the plight and UNMASK the institution’s endeavor! From local achievements to international — the KNP never paves a path to lose out. We only paused for protection, we stayed at home for the better but our passion of excellence have been wandering off in a global radius. The echo of KNP will now ripple! No three-ply sheets will impede us to be heard!
It’s time for unmasking!

Teaching Profession in the eye of Pandemic:
Transforming Risk to Renewal-PAFTE XI’s Drift “Education in the midst of pandemic is possible”, a quote full of hope from the PAFTE Region XI’s President Dr. Jocelyn H. Hua as she warmly welcomed all participants in the 1st Virtual Regional Student Congress with the theme “Capacitating Future Teachers in the New Normal” held on March 19. With almost 1,500 future teacher participants including prominent education professionals from different institutions in the region, the congress had been a great highlight as the PAFTE Region XI initiated a move this year to virtually web a huge educational network despite physical distance. “We cannot afford to be complacent especially in this roughest time… Pandemic is never a reason for us to settle at the bottom, be stagnant, and endanger our education!”, added Dr. Hua. Hence inspired the objectives of the congress to make the participants acquire and develop mechanisms in a new normal setup, prepare them for future challenges in various teaching-learning scenarios, and equip them with a variety of learning techniques and approaches applicable in the season of new normal. More so, Dr. Maricar R. Casquejo, Director IV of CHED Region XI graced the virtual congress by thanking all the Directors and Executive Officers of PAFTE Region XI for initiating educational innovations despite risky economic challenges in the present. Dr. Casquejo further stressed to all participants to “Never stop, never be contented of what you are told to do so”. She as well emphasized that teachers and future teachers need to upskill their competence to be sustainable and stay relevant. With that, prominent speakers and experts Dr. Felina P. Espique, Dean of School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts from Saint Louis University, and Ruchela P. Gamao, Registered Guidance Counselor from the University of Southeastern Philippines were invited to impart their knowledge to prepare the future teachers in facing education amid critical times. The program ran for eight hours from 8 am to 4 pm. In the morning, Dr. Felina P. Espique introduced the STRATEGIES FOR FLEXIBLE LEARNING. Dr. Espique started the capacitating training by inspiring students and empowering them that learning is inclusive and must be made accessible in times of crisis. The topics she gave immense emphasis on were the 4P’s of Flexible Learning: Place, Pace, Process, and Products, Different Learning Modalities, Models of Learning Modality, The Deming Cycle Strategy, and Planning and Leadership Requirements. Different emerging educational technologies like offline and online learning tools were also presented to students for them to explore and take advantage of to optimize the delivery of instruction despite the absence of physical teacher-student interaction. “As a transformative teacher, you must live up with the belief that there is a need to change, and that you must be willing to change”, highlighted Dr. Espique as she synthesized meaningfully her presentation. Ms. Ruchela P. Gamao, then graced the afternoon session as she discussed MINDFUL LEARNING AMIDST PANDEMIC. Ms. Gamao motivated first all the participants by encouraging them to assess their stress levels in the present time and see it as an opportunity to seek healing anew. Ms. Gamao served the afternoon with highly relevant psychological concepts that describe the current behavior and attitude of learners in the new normal. She emphasized the focal points of Discipline, Overcoming Weaknesses, Motivation, Minimizing Procrastination, and Controlling Negative Emotions. During the session, all participants had undergone a 5-minute Laughter Yoga and Relaxation Exercise that bade a positive vibe throughout the session. During open forum sessions, questions were fully addressed to students’ satisfaction and ignited interesting ideas and intellectual discussions. Hence, student participants had expressed their overflowing gratitude and commendations in Facebook Live and Zoom Meeting for both speakers as they went beyond the expectations from the primary objectives of the virtual gathering. “The webinar had a great impact on me. It taught us many things more than what I had vowed for as a future teacher. It was transformational!” witnessed Angel Grace B. Patongonon, a student from the University of Mindanao – Digos College. On top of that, the PAFTE Region XI immensely appreciated the gestures of both highly commendable speakers offering them certificates as a memento of their nevertiring support, for being generous for sharing thoughts, and for preparing the future teachers in their 21st-century battle.

When doubts had covered the minds of the young, opportunities have sought their way to shine. Through the virtual congress, hopes have sparked for the upcoming generation of teachers of the region to create something promising, something new, something creative beyond the conventions of traditional education as what the PAFTE Region XI always envisions for them. Stories aRE not just Told
P
Stories are Built!
eople are tired of listening to endless stories — stories of promises that always come out without conviction and certainty from the one who loves to nail their promises to the cross. For many reasons, we grew so fed with the delusion that one day, all of the thoughts we tend to hear do carry truth with them. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to find out the pure intentions of every word spoken by just hearing them. Our ears are not enough. We need to see them!
Everyone seemed to be hopeless about hearing the promise of the three-story building. Since 2018, our hands have been clapping and our lips have been curving for the future-dated check of promise that frequently bounces and declines in our subconscious. We bluffly ask “Kanus a naman sad ni matuman?”. Our eyes have been rolling up and down in a tiresome response for every utter of the phrase “the three-story building”. Perhaps we want it in an instant. The funny thing is people are so fond of seeing results in an instant right away! Slow down, why do we have to hurry all the things around us? Perhaps, we are not patient enough to see all the pieces of promises happening progressively into a reality. Beautiful things can wait. Today, we see the raw framework of the three-story building and suddenly, all these impatient connotations “Kanus a pa na matukod!” “Ay sus! Mangambot nalang ko sa three-story building!” “Nah! Story ra jud diay ang threestory building...,” are now unheard of. Where are these people who derided their heard promise? They will surely clap again, this time for real, before the magnificence of the anticipated infrastructure. This three-story building is a promise granted, a promise unbroken, and a promise made real! We all thank this to the unwavering leadership of Congressman Ruwel Peter Gonzaga together with the support of the Local Government Unit of Pantukan spearheaded by Hon. Roberto M. Yugo, MPA, and the SB Members. And of course, it would not be possible as well without the vision and love of our one and only Queen of the Academe, FDr. Dr. Jocelyn Hijada-Hua, DFRIEdr. This landmark building consists of extra fifteen (15) spacious rooms and extra office spaces that approximately will accommodate 1,800 students [40 students x 15 rooms x 3 shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening)]. A gift of a lifetime for the generations of Pantukeños to come. Sometimes, we do not need to rush things out! A plan is a plan and eventually, it will happen. “Patience is a virtue”, as cliché as it sounds but it still holds true. Magnificent outcomes are progressively developed through time. Soon, this building will embrace us in its fifteen (15) wombs and will surely love us back by sheltering our future nation’s workforces with the convenience of space for learning. The story of this three-story building will flourish in time and sooner, we will be part of its pages. #TheLandmarkBuilding #SoonBeDone m

The traditional face-to-face classes were wiped off in the meantime. Public health is always a top priority. But, KNP advanced herself and offered new methods and modalities. Albeit the new mode of teaching, our numbers of students keep growing! We have also started to make a name in the field of cultural food as the institution will launch a hub that will dignify and resurrect IP arts and victuals. Not just that, KNP has cultivated livelihood programs for our fellow IP people who have been so affected by the economic shutdown. Furthermore, the culture of excellence is not only apparent in what we do but also in what we have been doing for ourselves to

This school year, KNP breaks national borders for international relations as our workforces are roaring their names beyond the nation. Nothing can break the chain of our goals! With the commitment and dedication of the people behind these magnificent victories, KNP will uproot herself from the ground. The Man on the Chair
E
A Faculty Member's Diary
veryone was so excited as Kolehiyo ng Pantukan opened herself to the public once again through an annual program ‘Paskuhan sa KNP’ where the institution prepares a grant event every December. Thousands of Christmas lights are set in the school’s facade, lanterns are hung and getting humongous each year, an arch is erected, and of course, a Christmas tree is stood up to flash a hope of lights in this yuletide season. But this year, the KNP took it extra special — 18,000 hand-made Christmas roses were planted and bloomed at 8:00pm on December 10. Before the lighting ceremony, we danced in colorful lights to rejoice in such a vigorous night. To think we have been crippled by COVID-19 for almost two years and that night was an opportunity for us to show our students what they have been missing a lot if the pandemic did not succumb to our municipality and the nation. The incubus of viral plague, unfortunately, impaled the institution’s operation. That is why most of the school’s programs have been held virtually. But that time was a
chance to let the culture of fun be known in our family - the KNP family. Hundred of lights had been flashing at that moment, laughter, smiles, and cheers kept all of our vigors atop when suddenly, a man whom my colleagues assisted was placed on a seat in the middle of the cheering crowd. Everyone then became silent and emotional background music followed while the crowd started to murmur about the man on the chair, Sir Edwin S. Cosep. It was June 04, 2018, when I first met him in KNP. I remember he did my preliminary interview before I was evaluated by the College President for my application. He was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at that time. I was glad because he was an English major like me. I said to myself, I would learn from him. While I was on my teaching journey here in KNP, a lot of students affirmed that he was enthusiastic and immensely expert in his craft. Upon hearing these commendations, the more I wanted to know him. As I was scanning through the old photos of the school, I saw Sir Cosep in almost every frame. Those are proofs that this man worked dedicatedly behind the lens. According to our College President, he took multiple roles and responsibilities when KNP was insufficient of the workforce to fill the institutional organization. He became a registrar, at the same time a guidance counselor, sometimes a cashier, most of the time an instructor while being the College President’s acting secretary who ran here and there to catch up documents for the institution’s development. Not to mention, a loving and supportive father to his son and wife at home. Just knowing the fact that he did all of that makes me think that he is a superhuman and that is a great form of love and commitment he gave to KNP no one can question! Not even us who are just new in this institution. It was not long when I noticed his cubicle was vacant every single day in the mid of 2019. At that time, he was diagnosed to have Meningitis, a life-threatening ailment that inflames the fluid and membranes around the brain caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Since meningitis attacks the brain, the vital tissues responsible for mental function are most affected. The patient will experience speech problems, memory issues, loss of coordination, vision and hearing loss, and learning difficulties. This ailment has weakened his brilliance. Unfortunately, Sir Cosep can no longer work for KNP. As the flashlights are pointed up high, so does the question of those who have not known him “Kinsa na sha?” (Who is he?). And these curious individuals who happen to be the new students of KNP are clueless and might think that the man who was crowded has nothing to do with them. But they do not know, that he is one of the greatest key persons who made the KNP possible! And he has left a huge legacy... While most of us are anticipating the fireworks and Christmas lights to illuminate the night, Sir Cosep has actually brought the true light that the whole KNP community celebrates. The light of LOVE he gave for Kolehiyo ng Pantukan despite his fainting body. m
It was not the 18,000 lights of roses that lit up the night. It was him! He lit up the KNP that night.

Chismiss here, chismiss there, everywhere!
Katong oras nga nasakit kag ‘chicken pox’, ‘measles’, or simple nga
Meresi! Kalinturahon ka, mamuypoy imung lawas, mawal an kag panglasa, mukarat imung tilaok, kapuyon ka, magsuka ka, magsakit imung tiyan... ug daghan pa. Imung lami nga lawas wala pa kaila ana nga virus, so unsaon man pagsukol sa imung lawas ana sa olympics dzaeee? COVID-19 vs, You? Pag sure! HAHAHAHA chourrrr! m
#2
Unsa diay sulod anang vaccine? Nganong kalinturahon man ang mga tao o maluya after matusukan?
Gurl! Of course! So meaning, nay “meet and greet” nahitabo. HAHAHA Bright atung body sisszt so salig lang! Kung ma vaccinan naka eesshhh, you know! COVID-19 virus is everywhere ug basig one time nga wala ta kabalog masudlan ka eesshhh, na remember na sa imung body ang kana nga virus ug maremember niya kung gi unsa to niya pag control ug pagpatay. (So nganong kalinturahon man ta?) Girl! I told you, naay meet and greet nahitabo sa sulod. Mawala ra ang side effects esshh by their own after few days.

Sip on ra nang COVID-19 ug kalintura, i toob ra na siszt! Di nato kinahanglag vaccine
Sizzzt, musalig man ko sa traditional na pamaagi pero dili na pang long term! Awh! Sigi! Sip on ra bitawwww. Ug ma intensive care unit uroy ka sa hospital, ayaw pag post ug GCASH number ha? #toobpamore

Kinsa ra man pud ka uie para i track? Awh! Sahhrriii AHAHAAHA. Asa man sad ka nakadungog ana?
Staaahhhppp! Magka COVID-19 gihapon ka pero dili na tika ma “See you in ICU”.

Dili! Dili mandatory ang vaccination eessshh! According sa DOH, “No, vaccination is not mandatory. But the government highly encourages the public to get vaccinated and be protected against preventable disease.” We need these professionals as well para ma dugangan atung mga kahibalo. (Wala man koy kwarta esh...) Awwhhh, dira lang... Babayuuuuuu! Charot! Go! Avail na! Then, basa2x ta online aron lami ang mga sploka! m

What if You Wear Mask All Day Long? Mask Mouth: Problems and How To Deal With It Erika Mae Campoamor Cagadas
A
s the world is attacked with an incubus of viral plague, many countries including the Philippines are requiring people to wear face coverings in most public spaces to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Then and there, face masks became the simple barrier to protect ourselves and others we come into contact with. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the evidence is clear that this particular effort does help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and that the more people wearing masks, the better. However, prolonged contact with the mask can create unwanted side effects, such as what we call “mask mouth”. It is a variety of oral side effects from wearing a mask for an extended time which includes dry mouth, tooth decay, and even gum disease. The severity of mask mouth symptoms varies for each, but the condition most commonly presents itself as dry mouth, bad breath, and bleeding gums. These effects come about mainly because behind the mask, you tend to keep your mouth open as you are trying to let in more air thus you breathe through your mouth which eventually makes you have a bad breath due to lesser saliva production inside of your mouth. As a result, you are bound to drink less water than usual as you feel it to be inconvenient since it is still unnatural for you to be wearing
a mask. Doing that makes you have more dental issues because there is even less chance for you to get the mouth out of its dry state. On top of that, wearing a mask may impact the type and amount of bacteria in your mouth, which can cause plaque build-up and eventually affects your gum tissues. Now, you will have bleeding gums as a result. Therefore, despite having the studies show that masks do indeed play a crucial role as one of the protective measures in this drastic time, it is undeniable that it can still bring risks to one’s dental anatomy and thence it is a high recommendation to see your dentist every three to six months depending with your schedule. Now that we have listed out the problems with mask mouth, how do we deal with it albeit still wearing the mask every day? As demonstrated by dental health professionals, one must implement some of these preventative measures:
1. Focus on your oral care routine 2. Freshen up between cleanings 3. Keep an eye on tooth and gum health 4. Stay hydrated 5. Use a clean mask 6. Contact a health professional
Medical professionals that wear masks regularly already understand what it's like to spend hours at a time in their breath. The mask mandates of 2020 however have given many people this experience for the first time and it is not always easy for them to adjust and from this segment, mask mouth is the somewhat general term to describe all of the symptoms and complaints that patients are coming back to the dentist with. Henceforward, we must address this condition with the help of the right tools and especially by seeing a dental professional first and foremost. Check your mouth today!

Skin care: 5 tips for healthy skin
Good skin care — including sun protection and gentle cleansing — can keep your skin healthy and glowing.
By Mayo Clinic Staff
D
on’t have time for intensive skin care? You can still pamper yourself by acing the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay natural aging and prevent various skin problems. Get started with these five no-nonsense tips. 1. Protect yourself from the sun One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. For the most complete sun protection: Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring. Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.
2. Don’t smoke Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler. This also depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles. In addition, smoking increases your risk of squamous cell skin cancer. If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking. 3. Treat your skin gently Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle: Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm — rather than hot — water. Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers. Shave carefully. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction TURN TO PAGE 23

How to look after your mental health from: MentalHealth.Org.Uk It’s important to take care of yourself and get the most from life. Below are 10 practical ways to look after your mental health. Making simple changes to how you live doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take up loads of time. Anyone can follow this advice. Why not start today? 1. Talk about your feelings Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. 2. Keep active Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy, and is also a significant benefit towards improving your mental health. 3. Eat well Your brain needs a mix of nutrients in order to stay healthy and function well, just like the other organs in your body. A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health. 4. Drink sensibly We often drink alcohol to change our mood. Some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness, but the effect is only temporary. When the drink wears off, you feel worse because of the way the alcohol has affected your brain and the rest of your body. Drinking is not a good way to manage difficult feelings. 5. Keep in touch There’s nothing better than catching up with someone face to face, but that’s not always possible. You can also give them a call, drop them a note, or chat to them online instead. Keep the lines of communication open: it’s good for you!
6. Ask for help None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go to plan.
If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help. Your family or friends may be able to offer practical help or a listening ear. Local services are there to help you.
7. Take a break A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, a half-hour lunch break at work, or a weekend exploring somewhere new. A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you. Give yourself some ‘me time’. 8. Do something you’re good at What do you love doing? What activities can you lose yourself in? What did you love doing in the past? Enjoying yourself can help beat stress. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it, and achieving something boosts your self-esteem 9. Accept who you are We’re all different. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were more like someone else. Feeling good about yourself boosts your confidence to learn new skills, visit new places and make new friends. Good self-esteem helps you cope when life takes a difficult turn. 10. Care for others ‘Friends are really important… We help each other whenever we can, so it’s a two-way street, and supporting them uplifts me.’ Caring for others is often an important part of keeping up relationships with people close to you. It can even bring you closer together. m

he is here again – Lilith. I told her not to see me today. But she insists, she really came. Her presence seems to kill me. She taught how to come home late at night, how to throw shades at people, and she even taught me how to crawl and get even dirtier. Lilith She takes me anywhere she goes. Last week, she went to see this tall thin guy named James. She asked me to stand away and watch her while they were making out with each other. After piles and piles of text messages, she has never really had enough of him. She told me about a tree on a farm beyond this subdivision where they shared their body once. Tonight she is going to see him again. This time, I tried to refuse her. But…..I don’t know, I couldn’t resist her. My feet just step out of the door. It’s too late! She grabs my hand and I’m out. Another night of coming home late. It is almost midnight, I am walking with her. How pathetic! She made me wear the same dress. As usual, she loves to show off too much skin. I remember when she said that men are just carnal animals and they would surely fall for it. One glance at it and it makes them beg to their knees. Lilith loves seeing men who can’t resist. I knew this doesn’t bode well. Looking at her, I have thought, I have started to risk myself out of my comfort zone. Since she came, I have been lying to my parents about my whereabouts. I started to love the night more. Things become worse and worst but it gets perfectly awesome. She lets me feel true freedom which I know was a lie. For her, the word ‘no’ doesn’t exist. She’s not and will never be nice but why do I keep listening to her? Why do I keep following her? This makes everything weirder. I couldn’t even tell how she and I became friends. All I remember was that moment of a nightmare. I was walking back home at that time when a man appeared behind me, drunk and wild. Suddenly, he gripped my shoulders and forced me. I refused. I was shaking, I was startled. I tried my best to escape from that erotic darkness. Out of nowhere, Lilith came and took my place. She sacrificed herself while I was slowly walking away from the clutches of lust! I did not know what happened then but all I know was she became the victim instead of me. It was my first encounter with her. Every time I see her, my memory of that night flashes back. I don’t even know this persona and she doesn’t even know me. How did she get into my way? Even after that incident, even after she saved me, there is always a feeling of me not to trust her, I just can’t! One dreary evening, she took me to a party. Lilith was drinking together with five strangers. She was aggressive and from there, the strangers altogether returned her the favor. They slaked her! I saw how she crawled and got out of her mind. She was the dirtiest in the lowest of the lows! She was mad yet fulfilled! There’s nothing I could do about her, so I just lurked behind the burnt cigarettes and sprawled empty bottles of rum. Call her filthy but believe me, she never cares! She gets even.

And she can be more gruesome than that! Now, we finally reach the farm she talked about. I couldn’t see anything so well even with my flashlight on. My heart cannot rest like the dried leaves crunching to the silent steps of our feet in the dark space. I guess someone is standing under one of the trees. “Is it James!” she whispered. Lilith tells me to stay where I am standing. I grow queasy. The place is gloomy and cold. A crunch of dried leaves echoes from a distance. Someone seems to get near me. I tried to walk away slowly but suddenly, a strong grip of hands drags my shoulders. I drop my flashlight. “Noooooo……” I scream the loudest but I feel like inaudible. For goddamn sake, it’s James! And he is kissing my nape. I’m afraid he might have mistaken me for her. I grapple and try to speak. But, I can’t! I am enraged! I hear Lilith’s laughter! But she is nowhere to be found now! I knew she would do this to me! There is no way I can’t escape. James pushes my body against the tree as he starts to grab my hair. I can’t... Someone… Please stop him! He doesn’t know, I am not the person he thinks I am. My tears just fall out until they dried up. I am now voiceless. I never imagined Lilith would have gone this far! “Thanks,” was all he left after all that he had done. I am still trying to compose myself while wiping up my dried-up tears. He just ruined all of me. He would see me again he said. How will I refuse and he threatens me. “I’m your boyfriend right?” he said with audacity and leaves. A glimpse of memory suddenly flashed, I had already heard these words before – he told Lilith the same! I dress up and walk back to my home leaving the dread tied on the true trunk. It was a brink of disdain and gratification that coiled my consciousness after knowing what Lilith did to me. But deep in my buried thoughts, I knew that someday this would happen. Now I get the thought of why she always reminds me to “play a little more innocent!”. And James? I knew he would play it like that! This time, I won the game!. “Did I make you proud Lilith?” I ask the air smirking while walking down my way to our house. Now, I lay down on my bed thinking about what happened a while ago. I sit up and look at the mirror caressing the familiar red mark on my neck. She did not leave. She was there and she saved me. She saved this body! Lilith taught me to be never wise. And I guess, I have learned it now. Promise Lilith, I never will be… I take the two pills sitting on my desk to put her to sleep. In a few moments, we will be one. I just smiled and realized, James had Lilith all this time. James has always had me. m

8 TIPS TO AVOID... from page 22 to classical music or white noise to drown out any noise. PRIORITIZE Prioritizing your work and assignments is another way to help you avoid procrastination. Every week or so, make a list of what needs to be completed. Make sure you address the most critical or time-sensitive assignments first. Then work your way down the list. Get the hard stuff out of the way first, so that everything that comes after it will seem more manageable. SET GOALS Part of the reason you might procrastinate is because what you have to do seems overwhelming. It’s a lot easier to get started on a project when you establish simple, reachable goals rather than face a big, vague plan. Instead of telling yourself, “I’ll study chemistry tonight,” you might instead say, “I’ll study chapter six tonight.” This makes your goals less intimidating and more attainable. SET DEADLINES Another tip to avoid procrastination is to set deadlines. Many students get stuck in the “I’ll do it tomorrow or eventually” cycle when in truth that day or eventually never comes. It’s important to set a specific date for when you want a project or assignment to be completed. Aim to have your projects and assignments completed one or two days in advance. That way, if something unexpected happens, you still have extra time to complete them. TAKE A BREAK Another tip to avoid procrastination is to take a break from your school work every now and then. Take a 10-15 minute break. Listen to music, take a walk or scream into a pillow — anything that takes your mind off of your school work and allows you to relax. An Oregon State University study shows that taking a break can increase focus, reduce stress, and help you better retain information. REWARD YOURSELF Rewarding yourself may create an incentive to complete a task and help avoid procrastination. After studying for a test or completing an assignment, consider giving yourself a reward. It could be as simple as, “Once I finish this assignment, I can watch an episode of my favorite show.” HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE Holding yourself accountable for completing your assignments on time, studying for tests and getting good grades is another tip to avoid procrastination. While it is easy to find reasons not to study and take unnecessary or extra-long breaks, catch yourself before this happens. Remember that you are responsible for the assignments you complete or don’t complete, the tests you ace or don’t do so well on, and your grades. If you need help in holding yourself accountable, tell a friend or family member and ask them to check up on your goals, deadlines, and accomplishments. m

Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF. 4. Eat a healthy diet A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn’t clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated. 5. Manage stress Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Get enough sleep, set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect. m

trouble going to college and have a good career when now we know that they can’t even finish high school because pressure has been overwhelming them? Having to go through a mental health crisis like that is as worst as having a thousand swallowtails blitzing in your mind until it paralyzes your body into despair. How can students open up about this when all we do is always deem these mental health issues they have into a phase, hormones, or being overemotional? Society indeed has been perversely blinded! Mental illness, we call it, has been haunting us since time immemorial. It was just not recognized enough. But now, it is being sensationalized yet stigmatized and we are not even doing anything more to prevent it. Mental illness dresses up in subtle forms. Sometimes it is either ignored, overlooked, or overshadowed. For instance, it disguises in a form of a person having strange sleeping patterns, or in a person who is experiencing intermittent anxieties. It can also be in someone who would like to escape from his or her responsibilities or having unreasonable mood swings, or someone who always locks himself/herself in the room and comes out just for meals, or worst not even taking meals at all. The real problem here is that society disparages these kinds of behaviors. They will just say you are just having a hectic schedule, a simple moment of a hard time, or in women, they are just having their menstruation – “just having”. To pin this kind of illness is actually difficult. We must not also assume right away that a person has a mental illness or disorder just because they showed us only one sign of it. We need help! We need the help of mental health professionals because first and foremost, that is the reason why they exist, and seeking their help should be normalized! They are there to help people having a hard time staying still on a cliff where uncontrollable waves are crashing their mental posts. However, students who are floundered with their mental health choose to not seek the treatment they needed the most. Instead, they build towering barricades to conceal it from us – from the public. Parents should be the epitome of the word ‘propagate’ and because of this reason, the students mostly do not feel
safe with the energy they give off. They cannot open up! Many have also been sensationalizing that having a mental illness automatically makes you a psycho or schizophrenic which is a false mindset and needs not only a brief hiatus but an actual end! Judging has become somewhat a habit of the society that students nowadays are overtaken by fear upon sharing anything with the public or even just with their friends and families. As a matter of fact, it is inevitable to have mental health problems but at least students should allow people to take part in it because that is what they need. Every student, either a boy or a girl or even a member of the LGBT community always needs that warm conversation from the right person where it almost fixes everything. They just simply need society’s comprehension for their hearts to open again and again. Society was, is, and will never be designed to devour the students’ confidence towards weaving their futures. In this country, mental illness is stigmatized more than anything which creates a huge burden of untreated mental illnesses. Nevertheless, we must thrive to meet the best version of our society’s function and sole purpose. The schools must take the first step in this change. School is our second home, and as a second home, it must hold interventions that have a core of protecting the learners’ mental health, of course, guided by mental health professionals hired by the school itself. However, only a cluster of mental health professionals can help people dealing with such mental health crises, and worst, only a few areas are getting services from them. Therefore, the schools must take the action of introducing “Psychology” as an elective subject to students as early as first-year high schools. Knowledge is a privilege and so we must not allow our students to languish because of such ignorance. The truth is, a word of encouragement is worth a thousand praise, and a friend in times through thick and thin is worth a whole family’s love, and a single ‘regards’ is worth saving a life. Those are the simple things that students need and a way to avoid mental health crises is to knock on their doors. When they start to feel sad and blue, they only need someone to call to, someone they had a bond with that is tested and true. In that way, every student’s dream about a world where their mental stability will be put first above all will come true. Thus patchworks of pain will begin to heal and hope will once prevail again. If my friend Juan had been resilient enough to seek light out in a dark room of the past, circumstances would have been different and he would have had a chance to see this kind of world transpired to live. Juan was just like many of us. Let us not lose another him. Let us not lose another ‘Juan’. m
