Chairman’s Message By Taylor Rice
Final Thoughts from The Chairman Looking back over the events of the year gone by provides us with a unique perspective of the year ahead. With so many things happening in our lives, it’s easy to lose sight of the many and varied accomplishments of the prior twelve months. Here are a few highlights from 2011 to build upon as we plan for the new year: The winter of 2011 brought us weather like we haven’t seen in quite a while. The paralyzing effects of snow, ice and freezing temperatures were felt by people throughout the southeast. During the storm businesses struggled to open and those that succeeded likely found themselves with no customers. We learned lessons about ourselves and neighbors and that not even a four-wheeldrive truck can traverse a hill covered in ice an inch thick. Most importantly, we learned that we all need to have an emergency plan. During the spring we were able to see the results of a decade of explosive growth in our region. The findings of the 2010 census were revealed and Henry County now has over 200,000 residents calling it home. We certainly have come a long way in 10 years, and, if projections hold true, we have even further to grow. The Atlanta Regional Commission projects that we will double our current population over the next 20 years. What lessons have we learned from the previous 20 years and how will they help us plan for the growth of the next 20 years? In the summer of 2011 Henry

Business Boosters Lunch for January Co-Hosted by HCCC Small Business Council & Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) Atlanta “Business Development Successes on the Southside: The “Rest” of the Story” Featuring Panelists: Bob Simmons Chief Development Officer, Development Authority of Fulton County Greg Wright President, Coweta County Development Authority Grant Wainscott Director, Clayton County Office of Economic Development Bob White Executive Director, Henry County Development Authority January 19, 2011 HCCC Hudgins Room 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. While the rest of metro Atlanta is slowly coming out of the Great Recession, the Southside – with major project locations such as the Porsche North American Headquarters, Phillips-Van Heusen and Cancer Treatment Centers of America – is showing a remarkable rebound. Join us in January for a look- behind-the-scenes – with a panel of South Metro’s top economic developers to discuss these, and other, exciting business development announcements. The cost is $12 for Chamber members and $20 for non-members. Reservations are required. Call (770)957-5786 or email preeves@henrycounty.com for more information.
The Transportation Investment Act (TIA) of 2010 put the future of Georgia’s transportation in the voters’ hands. Following a process outlined in the TIA, elected officials in each of Georgia’s 12 regions developed a list of projects to be funded by a one percent sales tax. Georgians will vote on the tax via a referendum in the 2012 primary elections. Henry County is part of the 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission and as such, local transportation improvement projects are included in the Metro Atlanta Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST) referendum adopted by the ARC Round Table. A 21-member Regional Roundtable unanimously approved the $6.14 billion project list on October 13, 2011. Henry County’s share of the project list totals $193 million dollars in sales tax revenue over a ten year period. In addition, Henry County government and each of Henry’s four cities will receive a 15% discretionary amount totaling about $74 million dollars. This means the county’s direct return on projects and the discretionary funding is $267 million. Over the last eighteen months Chamber members have been following the detailed process that led to the development of the projects list/referendum and are now determining whether they are ready to support the T-SPLOST Referendum. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce has been involved in this process since the beginning working to assure Henry County’s fair share of revenue generated by the proposed tax, and assuring all modes of transportation were considered including roads, bridges, buses and commuter rail to address traffic congestion and assure transportation projects were linked to economic development. The Chamber is now providing facts about the upcoming regional T-SPLOST to better inform its members. “The Chamber has not taken an official position on the T-SPLOST referendum,” said Taylor Rice, Chairman of the Board of Directors, “but we will ask our Board to consider a position during the first quarter of 2012.” In the meantime, the Chamber will be working diligently to provide information on the T-SPLOST and encouraging members to study the initiative and advise the Board on its upcoming decision. “We want our members to be
involved in this important decision and we want our decision based on research and knowledge,” said Rice. He further stated, “This is a historical vote for Metro Atlanta including Henry County and we have a responsibility to cast an informed vote.” Over the next few months, the Chamber will provide members with educational information on the T-SPLOST through a variety of mediums. Additionally, members are encouraged to visit websites provided by the Metro Atlanta Voter Education Network (MAVEN) charged with carrying out the voter education components of the Metro Atlanta Regional T-SPLOST referendum. MAVEN has already provided the public with relevant information about the project selection process and involved as many members of the public as possible. Over 200,000 metro Atlanta residents participated in the public input process through tele-town hall conferences, twelve public forums, online surveys, focus groups, polling instruments, and public comment at Roundtable meetings. MAVEN has launched its website – transformmetroatlanta.com, and Facebook (Transform Metro Atlanta) and Twitter (TransformATL) accounts to keep citizens informed. On the website, citizens can see the list of projects, receive updates about the ongoing effort and sign up to get more frequent updates through the newsletter. In the coming days, MAVEN will roll out an interactive map, allowing citizens to access and review specific information on the projects selected in their area. In addition, MAVEN began airing two radio spots during drive-time to begin the public education initiative. These radio spots can be heard on the website. Chamber members are encouraged to access the information provided by MAVEN, take advantage of the opportunities to learn more through continuing information provided by the Chamber, and communicate comments and concerns about the T-SPLOST referendum to HCCC Board members or Kay Pippin at kpippin@henrycounty.com. The work of educating Chamber members and voters begins now. This article is Part I in a series of articles/forums to provide Chamber members with information concerning the 2012 Metro Atlanta Regional T-SPLOST Referendum.

Mercer “educated” attendees about the types of programs offered at the RAC and about new programs soon to begin. Numerous door prizes were given out, ranging in value from $10 to $250, including a Nook donated by Mercer University and won by Chris Todd. The event concluded with the drawing for the $1,300 Chamber Jackpot – won by new member, Wade Carpenter (see the article “We Have a Winner!” on page 7).
Chamber-Sponsored Ireland Trip Was A Hit! It was a beautiful crisp autumn day November 3 when Rhonda Segers, Joyce Rodgers, Jeanne Glover, and Mayor Lorene Lindsey departed via limo from the Chamber office, bound for Ireland. There they visited in and around Dublin and Killarney. Their adventure took them through Irish countrysides, famous businesses like Guiness, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and to visit the Blarney Stone. “There were two to three days where the weather was as picture-perfect as they’d ever seen it in Ireland,” said Joyce. “Ireland is a beautiful, picturesque country and it was a great trip!” The Chamber partners with Collette Vacations to put together high-quality, yet affordable, trips to desirable destinations. Thus far, groups have been to Portugal, Tuscany, China and Ireland. A group of 14 will leave for Athens and the Greek Isles in March. Stay tuned for the next opportunity!

Mr. Carpenter attended his first Chamber-sponsored Business After Hours event Thursday night, October 27, only one day after joining the Chamber, where his name was drawn from among over 700 fellow business members to win the Chamber Jackpot of $1,300! Each month as incentive to entice participation by member businesses at the Business After Hours networking event, the Chamber holds a drawing for a jackpot. Up to three names of member businesses are drawn and if a winner is not present, $50 is added to the jackpot amount for the following month. In October, Chevy’s was the first business name drawn, followed by Al Hosford with Bank of the Ozarks. The third name drawn was also proof that the third time’s the charm, as Mr. Carpenter was actually present. “This type of incentive works quite well,” noted Membership Director, Roger Nix. “While the event is popular on its own merit, the jackpot definitely has member interest and contributes to
the success of Business After Hours.” “Chamber membership sure pays off – in many ways!” says Wade. “I’m happy to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce and appreciate this great introduction to the organization. I look forward to meet-
ing other business owners through the network the Chamber affords.” Due to the holidays, there will be no Business After Hours in November or December; the Chamber will start the jackpot at $100 with the new year.

Boosters luncheon
Chamber Holds Membership Appreciation Lunch on Halloween The day and weather turned out beautifully as over 150 Chamber members participated in the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s first Membership Appreciation Luncheon held on Chamber grounds. As traffic whizzed by on Highway 20 West on Halloween, ghouls and goblins belonging to the Chamber feasted on delicious barbecue plates and desserts courtesy of Shane’s Rib Shack. The entertainment for the event consisted of numerous door prizes donated by generous Chamber members, many totaling up to $200-350 in value, and a costume-judging contest with the top three winners (Georgine Pitcher, Dianne Williams and Judge Jim Chafin) each receiving $50 gift cards. “We never seem to get to participate in Chamber events because we’re always working” said Doug and Marsha Carter of Showcase Signs, “today we decided we were just going to take the time off and attend the membership
business
appreciation lunch and we’re so glad we did. It was so much fun!” A different purpose and agenda, the luncheon seemed to reach a new segment of the Chamber’s membership than the more business-oriented Business Booster Luncheons or the Business After Hours networking events. Wayne Clanton of The Doctor’s Office joined numerous other members in The Chamber’s October Business Boosters Luncheon was well attended and calling the Chamber to say how much fun it was. He said, “The luncheon was simple and fun – I’d featured Our Children’s Future 2011 Committee Chairman, Mike Griffin, along with like to see the Chamber do this again. I’ve belonged to other Chambers before and I don’t recall Dr. Ethan Hildreth, Superintendent of Henry County Schools. Together they proany of them doing something just for the vided an informative presentation outlining reasons to keep the penny sales tax members and just for fun.” The Chamber extends a very special thanks to Shane’s Rib Shack going for Education SPLOST and how the funding is to be utilized. FINANCIAL FOCUS
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
Manage Your Money Carefully This Holiday Season As you know, the holiday season can be joyous, hectic, celebratory — and expensive. And while you certainly enjoy hosting family gatherings and giving presents to your loved ones, you’ll find these things even more pleasurable if they don’t add a lot more weight to your debt load. And that’s why you’ll want to follow some smart money-management techniques over the next few weeks. To begin with, try to establish realistic budgets for both your entertaining and your gift giving. When you host family and friends, don’t go overboard on your expenditures. Your guests will still appreciate your efforts, which, with a little creativity, can create a welcoming and fun experience for everyone. As a guiding principal, keep in mind these words attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the famous German
poet and philosopher: “What you can do without, do without.” Set a budget and stick to it. And the same rule applies to your gifting. You don’t need to find the most expensive presents, or overwhelm recipients with the sheer volume of your gifts. This is especially true if you, like so many people, have been affected by the tough economy. Everyone you know will understand that gifts don’t have to be lavish to be meaningful. Furthermore, by sticking to a budget, you won’t be tempted to dip into your long-term investments to pay for fabulous parties or mountains of gifts. It’s never a good idea to tap long-term investments for short-term needs, but can be especially bad when your investment prices are down, as they may well be this year.
So, if you want to stick to a budget but you don’t want to raid your investments, how can you pay for your holiday season expenses? If you can spread out your purchases, you may be able to pay for them from your normal cash flow. But if that’s not possible, you might want to consider “plastic” — your credit card. Using your credit card does not, by itself, need to amount to a financial setback, especially if you’ve chosen a card that offers favorable terms and you’ve already shown the discipline not to over-use that card. Just try to minimize your credit card usage over the holidays and pay off your card as soon as you can. Of course, you can make your holiday season much easier, financially speaking, if you’ve set up a holiday fund to cover your various expenses. While it’s too
late to set up such a fund this year, why not get an early start on the 2012 holiday season? All you need to do is put away some money each month into an easily accessible account, separate from your everyday accounts. You don’t have to put in a great deal, but you do need to be consistent, which is why you may want to have the money moved automatically, once a month, from your checking or savings account to your holiday fund. When next year’s holiday season rolls around, you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you’ve accumulated. But for now, following some common-sense money management practices can help you get through the holiday season in financial shape — and that type of result can get your new year off to You don’t need to find the most expensive presents, or overwhelm recipients with the sheer volume of your gifts. a positive start.
Toys for Tots brings joy to needy children. Edward Jones is supporting the Toys for Tots campaign by using our offices as drop-off locations. Help needy children in our area by bringing a new, unwrapped toy to the branch office nearest you during regular business hours. With the holiday season just around the corner, now is a great time to remember those who are less fortunate in our community.
