INDUSTRY PROFILE CHILDCARE PROVES ESSENTIAL TO RE-OPENING SCHOOLS AND ECONOMY Across the nation when response to the COVID-19 pandemic caused businesses to close and workers to stay home, many childcare programs closed too, except for those serving essential workers. All together demand dropped by 60% to 75% nationwide in March and April. Entering the seventh month since Georgia ordered businesses to shelter in place, the childcare industry is considered by many to be a part of the essential infrastructure. Many childcare businesses have continued to operate and have done so with minimal interruption due to the pandemic. A wealth of new information derived from studies around groups that cared for the children of essential and frontline workers led recently to the release of new CDC guidelines for re-opening schools. Recognizing that social distancing is difficult with young children, some of the successes at childcare facilities involved dividing children into groups of 9 or fewer children per adult with no mixing of children or adults between groups. Children are provided their own craft materials and limited sharing with toys. Temperatures of each child (and parents) are taken daily at drop-off and parents are not allowed to enter the buildings. Children are delivered to the parents outside at the end of the day. Every staff member is required to wear a mask and, of course, there’s continual disinfecting and cleaning. David Mann, President and Director of Missions at Strong Rock Christian School said that they determined it was critical for families and their children for challenges to be met in order to remain open. “By implementing appropriate mitigation strategies, the Strong Rock Early Learning Center could remain open safely and meet the needs of families,” he explained. Eagles Landing Christian Academy which serves K-3 –12 closed in March and re-opened in June when restrictions eased. They spent the summer months planning and training for re-opening and developed a comprehensive plan which they posted online. Their childcare protocols and best practices follow closely the CDC Guidelines and helped them to re-open safely and without incident. The Chamber recognizes the essential work of its childcare industry members during these challenging times. Jennifer Flores, owner of Cedars Preschool at Locust Grove, and her team created a “Thank you for washing your hands” call-out to motivate children in their care to enjoy handwashing. When asked about measures taken to prevent infections, Flores said, “On week one, we implemented hand-held foggers six times a day, which create a fine mist disinfectant over everything. We also take temperatures continually and during naps. That’s when the Tylenol wears off.”

CHAMBER NEWS $2.5 MILLION CARES ACT GRANT ROLLOUT FEATURED The opening of the Henry County CARES Act Grant Restart Program was the subject of the Virtual Business Booster Luncheon held on Thursday, August 20, 2020. Hundreds of Chamber members and Henry County businesses tuned in at the noon lunch hour for the live webinar which broadcast also on Facebook Live. Henry County staff members, Shannon B. Sagnot, Director of Administrative & Constituent Services and Community Development, and David Smith, Henry County Director of Finance, presented information about the Henry County federal CARES Act (Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) supplemental grant funding allocated to support small businesses.

VIRTUAL BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 • 12:00 NOON ONLINE

PANEL DISCUSSION — WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN HENRY COUNTY: NEEDS, TRENDS, BENEFITS & OPPORTUNITIES

Familiar with the topic, Chamber president Joseph Henning moderated the discussion about how the County intends to award $2.5 million in grants for job retention and creation. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the global, national, and local economy, Henry County is committed to offering assistance where possible for the small businesses that are the fabric of our communities,” explained Joseph B. Henning, Chamber CEO. An additional $2.5 million will soon be available for non-profits.

The Business Booster Luncheon will feature a panel discussion on September 17, via Zoom and Facebook Live. The event assembles a panel of workforce development experts who have Henry County as a primary focus area. The recent surge in supply chain logistics and advance manufacturing and technologies will bring nearly 2000 jobs to the area in the next year and positions Henry County as a leading hub for additional growth. But are we ready? Are we adequately prepared with a pipeline of skilled workers and technicians to fill the hiring needs of the recent business expansions? Will businesses in the area be able to become a part of the supplier ecosystem?

The live Q & A provided details about the grant, who qualifies, and how to apply. To view the Business Booster Luncheon, visit www.Together4Henry.com.

Join us during lunch for this discussion so relevant for business leaders and employers of Henry County. To register, visit the Chamber website Events page at henrycounty.com.

LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP FINDING HISTORY INSPIRES YOUTH LEADERSHIP By Lyndsay Theado

History has taken such an enormous role in the present-day conversation that the Youth Leadership Henry board of directors could not let the missed class for “County History Tour Day” slip through their fingers. Through brainstorming sessions, some trial and (quite hilarious) error, and working with Henry County Historian Gene Morris, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2020 was sent out on a history scavenger hunt throughout the county during the month of August. While able to work individually to maintain social distancing the class has taken their families for a ride through notable places throughout Henry County’s past. The students have visited places such as the Locust Grove Institute, a 1890’s era college preparatory school that is now the city hall, to Floyd Chapel Baptist Church in Stockbridge where Martin Luther King, Sr. preached his first sermon, to the old Smith’s Power Plant foundations, a hydroelectric power plant founded in 1919, along Airline Road at Cotton Indian Creek. We hope the history of our community will continue to help shape the leaders of tomorrow! #YLHClassOf2020
