Our Chamber…

Expanding the Possibilities Well Summer is now officially over and our local schools and colleges are fully in session. There is not a media outlet that isn’t already displaying some sort of ad with the infamous count down until the holidays.

Although we will be singing “Auld Lang Syne” before you know, there is still much to do before the end of the year.

One of our primary initiatives between now and November 5th is the advocating for the passage of SPLOST V. As a Chamber we have historically supported both the SPLOSTs and the ESPLOST. This year after doing our due diligence by meeting with the county manager and many of the county commissioners, reviewing the project list and surveying our Chamber partners, the Chamber voted overwhelmingly to support SPLOST V. I’ve learned through life that there is no way to please

100% of the people 100% of the time but when evaluating this SPLOST project list it was clear to see over 60% of the funds were allocated toward transportation projects which has been a major concern of the business community for years. We have a committee in place consisting of Chamber members ready to go out in the community and

lend their talent, time and resources to advocate for this great cause.

Another great event coming up in the Fall of the year is our annual membership appreciation luncheon. It goes without saying that we would be nothing without our great partners. Before accepting the chair position, I often heard our former CEO say,

“I have a staff of five but a workforce of hundreds.” It wasn’t until I truly saw the behind-the-scene workings of the Chamber that I realized what he meant.

I’ve really juggled my work schedule to try to make as many ribbon cuttings as possible, but we have experienced record setting requests for ribbon cuttings this year. And there is no way

those ribbon cuttings would have been as successful as they were without our volunteer Ambassadors.

Another great example of our hard-working partners is that we have been able to ensure members of our Education Committee have volunteered for every Mock Interview event at the public schools throughout the county. And our government affairs committee were able to pull off a legislative breakfast with over 80 in attendance with only weeks notice. And our membership committee has our membership recruitment numbers at pre-recession levels. These examples and so many more are why we have such a thriving chamber. So, on October 31st we will have our 9th Annual Member Appreciation Lunch. Please come out and enjoy a catered lunch and wear your favorite costume.

aste Industries is now part of GFL Environmental, Inc. (GFL). The two entities merged in 2018 to create the largest privately-owned environmental services company in North America. The merger combines the GFL workforce of more than 6,000 employees with over 2,850 employees of Waste Industries operating in Canada and in 10 US states. Together the company now provides its broad range of environmental services to more than 137,000 commercial and industrial customers and its solid waste collection services to nearly 4 million households including over 250,000 customers or “service points” in Georgia.

In Henry County, GFL operates from an office in Stockbridge with over 120,000 service points in the cities of Stockbridge and Hampton and neighboring Lovejoy in Clayton County as well as many subscribing customers located in surrounding unincorporated areas. The familiar Waste Industries branding that has been seen on trucks collecting trash in these neighborhoods for more than 40 years is gradually being replaced with the leaf sprouting GFL Green For Life logo and its eye-catching neon green. The transformation will take place first on employee uniforms, trucks and commercial containers. The household receptacles will be replaced only over time as the existing ones are still doing the job.

Community Involvement As a service provider for residential end-users, GFL partners with major clients such as Stockbridge and Hampton to support their common customer base with programs that enrich

the community. Merle Manders Conference Center Manager for the City of Stockbridge, Econuel Ingram stated that GFL is one of Stockbridge’s most consistent partners in hosting community events. “They have sponsored the Sounds of Summer, an annual free concert that has grown to over 2500 in attendance this year. And GFL helped us introduce the “Pretty in Pink” luncheon to honor over 300 cancer survivors in our community and they are an annual supporter of Bridgefest, our flagship event.”

Chamber Involvement GFL is carrying forward a culture of corporate responsibility that was intrinsic at Waste Industries.

They are members of all the local Chambers of Commerce, including the Henry County Chamber, where their end-user customers are located. “We understand that the Chamber is a vital part of the community. As a member of the Chamber, we can partner in supporting and helping maintain a vibrant economic environment in which businesses can be successful,” said Renova.

What are Soft Skills?

Communication, teamwork and adaptability are important soft skills due to a demanding and dynamic business environment. Expectations must be set through effective communication and adhered to in order to reach optimal solutions. Teamwork brings diversification and experts to the project or corporate mission. Team diversity is productive and responsible for innovation and new processes. The only constant in business

management is change. It is not if, but when a strategy, mission or idea will be altered due to external and internal issues.

All managers need to have contingency plans. Building the right team with polished skill sets while communicating expectation and allowing for change will have positive organizational results.

Effective communication, adaptability and a team environment will build continuity and a healthy corporate culture.

The last three soft skills we will discuss are leadership, conflict resolution and critical observation. Leadership is a common term used today in the business world. However, many organizations are not reaching their full potential with their management team. Leadership is about influence and serving others. Many organizations have turnover, quality and recruiting challenges due to inadequate leadership. Quality leadership can solve many issues within the organization.

Conflict resolution is trying to make the best out of a bad situation or creating a winwin value model. All organizations have conflict. There are two kinds. The first is functional and the second is dysfunctional.

Functional conflict can bring innovation, ideas and sustainable solutions. However, dysfunctional conflict can cause short and long term damage to the organization.

The last soft skill we will discuss is critical observation. Analyzing and sorting data has become the new competitive advantage. Due to technology, we have more data than any time in history.

Companies need critical thinkers who bring innovation, analytics, and continuous improvement while creating competitive advantages. Critical thinkers change the status quo.

In summary, soft skills are in high demand in all organizations. Knowing how to lead others while solving issues, creating value and adapting to the current environment will lead to success in organizations. Strong soft skills build relationships and create a conducive work environment where innovation is supported and new products are developed.

Developing and enhancing soft skills is a journey and not a destination. There is always room for self- improvement in soft skills. Good luck on the journey.

While recently meeting with employers in Atlanta, many human resource (HR) managers mentioned soft skills in job descriptions. So, what are soft skills and why are they important? Soft skills are intangible and difficult to quantify yet a necessity in today’s business world.

Unlike hard skills, soft skills cannot be measured. For example, communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, conflict resolution and critical observation are all examples of soft skills. The business environment is changing due to technology and globalization. These skills are required now more than ever to manage employees, projects and bring value to the organization’s stakeholders.

With the start of a new school year, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce welcomes two new student interns. This year Madison Gordon and Masson Forte will follow in the footsteps of previous Henry County Schools Work Based Learning student interns building their professional portfolio while preparing for their next steps after high school.

Madison Gordon, a Youth Leadership Henry graduate, is a senior at Stockbridge High School.

Not only is she an academic leader and a member of several school clubs, she is a student athlete on her school’s varsity track and field team. With hopes of becoming a forensic scientist, Madison is preparing to go to Virginia Commonwealth University where she plans to major in forensic biology. “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to helping the Chamber in support of the Henry County business community,” says

Madison.

Masson Forte, a senior at Hampton High School, is focused on serving and bettering her community. “Youth Leadership Henry was a way for me to better understand the social and economic climate of the county.” As a student intern, Masson will be able to sharpen her writing skills, acquire knowledge of a broad base of technical platforms and strengthen her interpersonal skills. She plans to major in Psychology and Marketing at Kennesaw State University.

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is excited about the arrival of student interns Madison Gordon and Masson Forte. The pair will be focused on promotion of member events and activities and supporting the Chamber across all mission-driven initiatives.

The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round—all the way to Camp Twin Lakes on the other side of town. As I boarded the bus, I had flashbacks of childhood summer camp. We were greeted and directed to our cabins and the nostalgia filled the air.

Into the woods we go, and the activities that the Board of Directors had planned for us during the two days was amazing!

The outdoor challenges and team building activities were not only physically and mentally challenging but provided a heightened awareness of team mentality and strategic problem solving. Spending this quality time with other Henry County leaders allowed for group exposure to multidisciplinary talents and cultivated community relationships.

Overall, the retreat was an eye-opening experience and the start of a legacy. From Dolly Parton’s distant cousin to an NCAA record-setting athlete, our group of 30+ charismatic individuals came together as one with our sights set on becoming the best class ever!

From classroom instruction to game night, every minute was filled with excitement and learning opportunities. Work-life balance is difficult to maintain, and this retreat allowed a break from the monotonous cycle. The Clifton Strengths workshop highlighted our attributes and showcased how similar we all are, yet so unique. I was shocked to have

By Lyndsay Theado On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, Youth Leadership Henry kicked off its new year with their Orientation Reception to meet and greet all the upcoming students and their families.

The selections committee had a very tough time this year combing through almost 100 applications from all over the county. The 41 applicants selected for this year’s class come from 12 different high schools representing public, private and homeschool sectors.

included the addition of vertical treatment spaces in June of 2019, an obstetric emergency department, a 20-bed unit on 2 East, and a 12-bed transitional care unit.

Under Armstrong’s leadership, the hospital has also made investments in cancer wellness, with a new space for The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center, and cardiovascular services with a new catheterization lab and a cardiac rehabilitation department.

Piedmont Henry is also committed to strengthening partnerships in the community with a focus on education. The dedicated education unit, where nursing students work alongside Piedmont Henry nurses, opened in September of 2019 and the hospital is also building a Patient Simulation Lab, which will be used by staff members as well as local high school and college students interested in careers in nursing.

HCCC Hosts 12th Annual Intergovernmental Retreat in Columbus, GA The HCCC Board of Directors hosted over 40 Henry County business leaders and elected officials for its annual Intergovernmental Retreat, August 22-23, at the Marriott Columbus on the Columbus State University campus in Columbus, GA. The theme for the 2-day event was “Building Community in Times of Change” with discussions facilitated by consultants with the Columbus State University Leadership Institute.

In sessions centered around strategic thinking and managing difficult conversations, the group identified

areas of need and concern that can impact Henry County quality of life, smart growth and economic development. The attendees shared a consensus that the retreat was a meaningful and positive platform for identifying common goals and finding unity in problem solving.

Georgia Visitors Center Staff Visits Henry County

What is a SPLOST? Georgia law allows local communities to use Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) proceeds for capital improvement projects that would otherwise be paid for with General Fund and property tax revenues — or that would not be accomplished.

Funds may not be used for operating expenses.

If voters approve the SPLOST V program on November 5, 2019, the sales tax collection will begin in April 2020.

Sales taxes will not increase as a result of this program. In fact, it will continue at seven percent (7%) since the current SPLOST collection will end in March 2020.

Visitors to Henry County will also be contributing to the improved quality of life by paying the sales tax. According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Henry County households would each pay an additional $282 annually without tourism activity.

Welcome to Georgia! For more than 12 million visitors each year, the Georgia Visitors Information Centers (VICs) are the first stop upon entering Georgia. These centers offer clean restrooms, maps, a myriad of information about the state, and is staffed by Georgia tourism experts.

The staff at the 11 Georgia Visitors Centers offer directions, make hotel reservations and offer recommendations for things to do and places to visit throughout Georgia.

Educating the VIC staff is just one of the ways the CVB is working to increase awareness of Henry County’s tourism offerings.

“The State calls the VICs Georgia’s front porch,” said Director of Tourism Laura Luker. “They welcome millions of visitors and many guests use their recommendations when deciding where to stop, stay and play.”

In August the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau hosted nine representatives from eight of the 11 VICs for a three-day study tour of Henry County. During their visit, the VICs staff took aim at an archery class at Panola Mountain State Park and tasted wine and cheese pizza at 15th Street Pizza, one of the featured dishes in the 2019 Georgia’s 100 Plates Locals Love list. They enjoyed overnight accommodations at the newly renovated Courtyard by Marriott and were wowed by Noah’s Ark’s Walk on the Wild Side tour as well as so many other amazing places and delicious restaurants.
