New Members Learn to Network and Win! Networking was done in style and with flair at Eagle’s Landing Country Club on October 13. Twice per year this elegant country club sponsors a reception honoring new members received into the Henry County Chamber of Commerce during the six months prior. These receptions provide a comfortable and supportive environment
where most people present are new to the Chamber and serve as an opportunity to coach new members on how to network at future Chamber events. They quickly learn that business cards are a “must” – both for networking and for winning door prizes! Much like speed-dating, members rotated tables every five minutes to learn about ta-

ble topics such as benefits afforded Chamber members, committees, special events, how to get the most from your membership, and the CVB’s role with the Chamber. Then they have a chance to win great door prizes provided by member businesses, reinforcing the principle of members giving business to fellow Chamber members.

Chairman’s Message By Taylor Rice
Shop Local – Invest Wisely As we head into the holiday shopping season, I’m writing to share my thoughts as a local businessman on why Henry County residents should make the decision to purchase from local merchants and businesses. Choosing to invest locally is a decision that all of us could make on a daily basis. And I believe strongly that it’s a very important investment that we can make in our own local economy. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce has many member businesses that are locally owned and operated that count on the support of this community. So as you plan your shopping list, keep these thoughts in mind: Choosing to make your tax dollars work for your county makes good sense. Buying locally is the only way to put your tax dollars to work for Henry County. Per sources at the 3/50 project (www.the350project.net/home.html), for every $100 spent with a locally-owned independent business, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. For a purchase in a local national chain, $43 remains in the community. However, make a purchase online and NOTHING stays in your community. The choice is yours. It reflects an investment you make – or fail to make. One of the most important reasons to support local businesses is that they tend to be the first to give back to the local community by supporting its charitable organizations. From the little league that needs sponsorship to non-profits who depend on donations to carry out much-relied upon programs,
local business owners are chief contributors. Without the support of the local business community, many of the non-profits would be unable to meet the needs of those they serve. Choosing to spending money locally enables you to strengthen our community’s charitable support network. When you spend dollars with a local business, you exercise your ability to help stimulate job growth right in your community. I personally believe that spending money locally can do more to spur job growth and job creation than any intervention from other sources. When we choose to spend money in our community, we enable businesses to employ OUR friends and neighbors. When local companies thrive, they tend to expand and when companies expand, they hire even more employees. So helping to make our businesses successful can improve the quality of life of the people right around us. Further, each
new job created represents another resident with a positive ripple effect on the ability to support other businesses in the community. You are more likely to know who you’re dealing with. Local businesses often enjoy name and face recognition so that when a problem arises, customers don’t feel like they’re going up against a Goliath or an unknown entity. Instead, they tend to know the staff, if not the owner, of businesses they support, which results in a more personalized experience. After all, who is better positioned to know the culture and buying trends in a community more than those businesses located in the community? By patronizing locallyowned and operated business, you get personal service, often from a friendly face who works directly for the boss! We want to continue to enjoy a diversity of options. By purchasing locally, you help ensure the success and longevity of the business and economy at home. Your purchases support and thereby keep the option of going two miles versus twenty-two miles to make a purchase. While larger businesses are also local options, you don’t want to eat at a fast food chain every time you eat – sometimes you want the neighborhood café that’s run by someone you know. It may not always be advantageous, convenient, or even possible to choose to invest with a local business, but when it is feasible, I hope you’ll make the decision to shop local -- and consider it a wise investment in your community.
Taylor Rice is both a partner in Moye’s Pharmacy and Registered Pharmacist who oversees a Moye’s long-term care division.

Chamber’s Golf Tournament Soars Above Expectations Raises $36,000 to support Chamber programs
The Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s Golf Committee, chaired by Rhonda Segers with United Community Bank, went above and beyond this year to make the Chamber’s 11th annual Golf Classic a success, raising $36,000 to support Chamber programs. Held on a beautiful Monday, September 26, the tournament and related events were quite memorable, kicking off with local actress/ singer Lynna Schmidt singing “God Bless America,” accompanied by kiltclad Winter Taylor playing Scottish bagpipes, a handsome color guard from Union Grove High School Naval JROTC, and a dramatic “cannon shot” start. Players once again were treated to the popular helicopter ball drop competition, with Gary Sparrow taking to air and taking aim to release the balls on the course.
Twenty-three teams and 116 players enjoyed the crisp, clear fall day on the beautiful Georgia National Golf Course at Lake Dow in McDonough. Kay Pippin, HCCC President said, “committee members did an excellent job of signing up so many golf teams. This has to be a record, considering the current economic environment. We are so appreciative of our golfers.” A huge thank you also goes to this year’s sponsors: Piedmont Healthcare (presenting sponsor); Georgia State University/Robinson College of Business (putting green sponsor); Georgia Power; Phillips
Van Heusen; United Community Bank; Henry Medical Center; Smith, Welch, Webb & White; Gas South; Outback Steakhouse; AT&T; Renfroe Outdoor (gold sponsors); SERVPRO (Mulligan sponsor); Mercer Univer-
sity; Bennett International Group; Brooks & Maddox Cosmetic & Family Dentistry; Fidelity Bank; Hamilton State Bank; and Charter Business (silver sponsors). The first place team was United Community Bank, consisting of Ken Palmer, Wayne Lowery, Rusty Strawn and Scott Freese. The second place team was Georgia State University/ Robinson College of Business and the players were Ralph Kahlan, John Marshall, John Hicks and Dara Broadus. Outback Steakhouse placed third and team members included Kareem Hinton, Max Shirley, Griffin Shirley and Josh Monk. The winners of the helicopter ball drop were: first place – Rusty Strawn with United Community Bank’s team; second place – Matt Freeman with My Supplies Team; and third place – Chuck Spahos, playing with Piedmont Healthcare. The winners of the put-
ting green contest were: first place – Greg Hammonds with Robinson, Whaley, Hammonds and Allison; second place – Larry Battles with Phillips Van Heusen; and third place – John Webb with Smith, Welch, Webb and White. At the end of play, Outback Steakhouse provided dinner for the awards ceremony.

business AFTER HOURS
The best and worst thing about the “great outdoors” is that it is...outdoors -- and completely outside human control. Mother Nature did not smile on the 7th Annual Toast to Tourism, as she brought muchneeded rain to the area, forcing activities like tree climbing and archery, to be cancelled and the remainder of the event to move under shelter. Despite the change in plans, visitors were still able to get a taste of Henry County’s tourism offerings as they visited the booths and learned about geocaching, a real-world treasure hunt. Children, unfazed by the rain, enjoyed the timeless pleasure of puddle jumping and were able to get up-close
and personal with some local wildlife brought by the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division and the Friends of Panola Mountain State Park. While the rain made picnics on the lawn out of the question, Momentum Church was there to provide sweet treats to all attendees from their ice cream truck. The HCCC/CVB would like to thank the gracious staff at Panola Mountain, the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division, Georgia State Parks, the Department

September – A Toast to Tourism of Natural Resources Search and Rescue and loyal volunteers from Panola Mountain and the HCCC/CVB who worked to put this event on. Just talk to someone who attended this year and you’ll find out that many who are parents or grandparents added it to their “must visit” list when wondering what to do
with the children. Gift cards for Chick-fil-A were given away as door prizes. Skip Pitner won a gift bag from HCCC/CVB. Southern Belle Farm provided a family fourpack of tickets. The Chamber’s $1,250 jackpot was not
awarded since Charles Iner, Bobby Williams, or Chris Willard were not present to win when their names were called, making next month’s jackpot worth $1,300.

The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant “Strike Up the Band” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” (both are in this show) is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad and the trumpet playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

When Tourists Spend, Residents Win It seems as if travelers let out a collective sigh of relief in 2010 and began making travel plans that had long been postponed. While 2009 saw a dip in tourist spending, visitors made up for lost time in 2010 -- spending $187 million in Henry County, the highest level of tourism revenue to date. The 2010 number is $10.89 million more than was spent by visitors to Henry County in 2009 and even $4 million more than 2008 when Henry County was experiencing unprecedented growth. Although travelers remain cautious and the way and reasons people travel have changed, Henry County is perfectly positioned to accommodate the new needs of today’s travelers. Today’s visitors are more priceconscious and their trips tend to be shorter, closer to home and are often combined with visits to see family and friends. With
Henry County’s proximity to Atlanta and with 80 percent of the US population within a twoday drive radius, Henry County is a great day-trip destination as well as a wonderful stopping place due to its convenient location along Interstate 75. It offers plentiful dining, comfortable lodging and a unique array of affordable attractions, making it a logical choice for travelers. So what is the benefit of tourism for a Henry County resident? The money spent by tourists in essence reduces the tax burden of local residents. These out-oftown guests contributed $5.65 million to the county’s local tax base in 2010. This means that each Henry County household had to pay $208 less in taxes to enjoy the high level of services provided by Henry County, thanks to tourism dollars. In addition to the taxes generated, the tourism industry also employed
more than 2,000 in Henry County in 2010. “Tourism is thriving in Henry County and the HCCC/CVB works diligently to raise travelers’ awareness through advertising and to draw new visitors to the county through programs such as the newly-launched and very popular geocaching program, billboards along I-75 and a receipt redemption program that encouraged local spending during race weekend,” states Laura Luker, Director of Tourism for the Henry County Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau. “From families bound for Disney World who stop here for gas and a bite to eat to die-hard race fans who make Henry County home for a long weekend, they all make an impact on our economy!” For more information about the HCCC/CVB visit www.visithenrycountygeorgia.com.

Henry County CVB Launches Geocaching Treasure Hunt Leads Visitors to Henry County Gems The HCCC/Convention & Visitors Bureau joined the worldwide geocaching craze as a way to draw visitors to areas of Henry County they may not have previously visited. Geocaching, a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game where participants locate “geocaches” using GPS devices, boasts more than five million participants. “These geocaches are everywhere,” says Laura Luker, HCCC/CVB Director of Tourism. “I was blown away by the number of caches in Henry County alone.” According to Geocaching.com, the main hub for this type of activity, there are more than 1.5 million active geocaches worldwide. This is an activity that is fun for all ages. “My family began geocaching several years ago and we have found it to be a fun way to explore the outdoors together,” stated Julie Hoover-Ernst, Chairman of the CVB Board of Directors. “I immediately saw the benefits of geocaching programs to promote tourism and brought the idea back to the CVB because it is not only an inexpensive activity, which is important in today’s economy, it is also a great way to encourage people to visit places in Henry County that they might not otherwise have known about.” In just over a month, more than 50 people, many of whom made special trips to Henry County, have found these new caches hidden at four local attractions. In addition
to filling out the log book in the cache and logging their find on geocaching.com, participants in the Henry County series are also being asked to download a “Henry County Passport” from the CVB’s website and stamp their passport with a custom stamp at each location. Geocachers who collect all four stamps can then turn their passport in at the Chamber office to redeem their prize. Timothy Sorrells, Jr., a Macon resident, was the first geocacher to collect all the stamps and turn in his passport. “The feedback we are getting from the series is all very positive,” said Mrs. Luker. “If our early numbers are any indication, then this program has the potential to expose hundreds of people to both Henry County’s well-known and lesser known attractions.” An Atlanta resident and long-time geocacher, Sean Allen, was the first to find many of the caches, including the one at Noah’s Ark. “This location is really nice,” said Mr. Allen. “I plan to come back down here with my wife. I would have never known about [Noah’s Ark] if not for this cache. This place is truly a treasure.” For more information about the Henry County geocaching program and to download your “Henry County Passport,” visit www.visithenrycountygeorgia.com/visit/ geocaching or call (770) 957-5786.

Founder of Georgia National Produce & Motivational Lecturer November 17, 2011 HCCC Hudgins Room 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m
2011 is drawing to a close and with it another lackluster year in our country’s economic history. Politicians are experiencing less than favorable feedback. Many people remain unemployed. The country remains at war. We’ve seen earthquakes, hurricanes, and other disastrous news events. And all these situations impact the roller-coaster effect in the Stock Market…… so what have we got to look forward to in the upcoming year? Where’s the positive side? • How can we put a positive spin on all these real-world negatives? • What attitude do I or my business reflect? • Are we are in for more of the same, how do we keep going? Get the answers to these and more questions at the November Business Boosters Lunch. The cost is $12 for Chamber members and $20 for non-members. Reservations are required. Call (770)957-5786 or email preeves@henrycounty.com for more information.

Five Good Reasons to Create an Investment Strategy Some people buy investments here and there, now and then. Others open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), put some money in it, and then forget about it. But this type of haphazard investment behavior can lead to haphazard results. On the other hand, you’ve got five good reasons for creating and following a comprehensive, long-term investment strategy. Reason No. 1: You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. For most people, building resources for retirement is the most powerful reason to invest. As a key part of your investment strategy, you’ll want to consider investments that have growth potential. The proportion of your portfolio devoted to
these growth investments should be based on your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as you move much closer to your actual retirement date, you may decide to shift some — but certainly not all — of your portfolio from growth-oriented vehicles to those investments that can provide a reliable income stream and incur less volatility. Reason No. 2: You need to stay ahead of inflation. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced relatively low inflation, but over time, even a low inflation rate can dramatically erode the value of your savings and investments. That’s why you may want to consider investments that provide the potential for rising income. Reason No. 3: You need to
help manage the unexpected. You can’t predict what life will hold in store for you. To cope with unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a new furnace, you’ll need to create an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses so that you won’t be forced to dip into your long-term investments. And to deal with other major uncertainties of life, you’ll need adequate life and disability insurance. Reason No. 4: You need resources for major life events. Your retirement may eventually require the bulk of your financial resources — but it’s not the only milestone for which you’ll need to save and invest. You may need a down payment on a house, or you may someday even want to purchase a vacation home. And if
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things for which we’re truly grateful. At Edward Jones, we’re thankful to serve our clients and our community. During this holiday season and every day, we wish you all the very best.

you have children or grandchildren, you may want to help them pay for college. Reason No. 5: You’ll want to keep in mind investment-related taxes. Taxes, like inflation, can eat into your investment returns. You’ll need to evaluate whether you can benefit from tax-advantaged investments and retirement accounts, such as traditional or Roth IRAs. So there you have it: five good reasons to adhere to a unified investment strategy that’s tailored to your situation. Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2012 Announced 2012 sees record 129 applicants contend for available seats
Youth Leadership Henry, a program under the umbrella of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, is offered countywide to high school sophomores, and is designed to develop leadership skills and acquaint participants with community needs, problems and resources. The program parallels the adult Leadership Henry program with the intention of developing and cultivating future leaders and engaging promising talent at an earlier stage in life. YLH allows students to interact with community leaders in examining a variety of issues affecting Henry County. Participants gain insight into complex decision making processes essential in addressing community issues, and they learn
about the cultural and economic opportunities available within our community. Participants commit to one day each month for the eight months of the program.
