Message from the Chair Together…Let’s Spring Into Action Together….Let’s Spring into Action! Spring is a wonderful time of year! Flowers begin to bloom, families share more outdoor activities, and our community features more entertainment for us all to enjoy! It’s a wonderful time to spring into action together and enjoy the wonders in Henry County. Some of us often visit other communities and cities to shop, eat, and play. Just look around Henry County! We have much to enjoy right here at home! By doing so, we are able to support our local businesses and do not have to travel far. Henry County is rich in resources with great people and wonderful venues in McDonough (our County Seat), Hampton, Stockbridge and Locust Grove. Here are some suggestions for Henry County’s great things to do, places to visit and experiences to share. If your taste runs to weekend mountain trails or camping, the park at Panola Mountain may be just the thing for you. The centerpiece of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, the park is conveniently located and costs only $5.00 for daily parking. Looking for high adventure? Atlanta Motor Speedway, located in Hampton, is one of the country’s premiere motor sports venues. From high thrill spectator racing to on the track driving schools and events, AMS is just a short drive from anywhere in Henry County. When the mercury starts rising so does the action on the track. The weekly spring/ summer Friday Night Drags Series kicks off in May and runs nearly every Friday through August. Quick on its heels is Thursday Thunder where racing stars of tomorrow take on the quarter-mile oval and battle it out for short track supremacy. Both events are inexpensive and family-friendly. For a change in your golf game, Henry County boasts one of the country’s premiere disc golf courses. A short drive to Moseley Park on Miller’s Mill in Stockbridge brings you to the course. A great afternoon of fun and exercise, and best of all, it is free. For history buffs, there is Heritage Park in McDonough, GA. While adults may appreciate the Veteran’s Wall of Honor, the children will certainly enjoy the heritage village and all will be duly impressed with the Heritage Park Veterans

Museum. Again, this attraction is easily accessible and can be viewed without cost. For a great adventure for the whole family, enjoy a visit to Noah’s Ark, located in Locust Grove. The world famous animal sanctuary is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 3:00 p.m. depending on weather. With over 1,200 animals on site, there is something to appeal to the entire family. As for cost, admission is free with donations solicited to help defray the $33,000 monthly cost to feed and shelter these animals. This is the only place in the world to see a lion, tiger and bear living together. Do you want to experience an actual farm in operation? Southern Belle Farms in McDonough has a number of family-friendly activities during much of the year. In the spring they offer the opportunity to pick a gallon (or two…or three) of strawberries or pick-up a gallon of pre-picked berries if you are short on time. Don’t miss the homemade strawberry ice cream from Mimi’s Kitchen and a chance to visit with the farm animals. The Pumpkin Patch at Yule Forest Hwy 155 is another great agricultural attraction right here at home. Do you enjoy music in a relaxed atmosphere? Stockbridge and McDonough have free concerts in the summer, which can be a great family evening. There are a number of festivals sponsored by the Cities of Hampton, Locust Grove, McDonough and Stockbridge. These can also be great family fun at little or no expense. If your idea of weekend relaxation is great food and drink with friends, try a new restaurant or

for something different, pay a visit to JailHouse Brewing Company in Hampton. Henry County has a growing number of new and homegrown restaurants, some of which are recognized throughout Metropolitan Atlanta for their excellence. Shopping is abundantly available in Henry County, whether it is in large centers such as Tanger Outlets, Henry Town Center, South Point and antique center like Peachtree Peddlers or at one of our locally owned and specialized retail shops. Henry County has a wide variety of goods and services available, and there is really no reason to leave our County to meet your shopping desires. Check out the member directory at the Chamber of Commerce’s website at www.henrycounty.com for more suggestions. You may find that weekend getaway is right outside your door. The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau has complete information on these and other Henry County attractions online at visithenrycountygeorgia.com. We hope you stay and see all that Henry County has to offer first! Together, let’s make Henry better by spending more time here at home, shopping locally and inviting family and friends to join us. We become a better community when we ourselves make it better by patronizing our local businesses & events and sharing the good news about what our County has to offer.

Healthcare Day Piedmont Henry Hospital played host to Leadership Henry’s Class of 2015 for Healthcare day on March 18. This jam-packed day gave the group an upclose look into one of the vital pieces to Henry County’s growth and success. Jeff Mills, Piedmont Henry Hospital Board Member, welcomed the class to the hospital and provided an overview of its history and its offerings to the county and Southern Crescent region. The group was able to hear how the hospital has grown by leaps and bounds, and how it continues to be a leader in healthcare offerings thanks to its association with Piedmont and the extensive Piedmont family. Dr. Sam Lorenzo then took the class on an entertaining journey into the world of emergency medicine. This presentation is usually one of the highlights of the day and gets the class fired up to tour the hospital campus. The class then divided into smaller groups for tours of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Cardiovascular Services, the Emergency Department, and the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center. Class members heard presentation by experts in each department detailing the day-today operations and offerings in their respective areas. Lunch was provided by OB’s BBQ and sponsored by Southern Journal Magazine. Hands of Hope Clinic Executive (R) Class members hear a presentation on the NICU.

(L) Hands of Hope Clinic Executive Director Mollie Cole shares information on her non-profit organization with the class.

Congratulations to … If you are a Chamber member with good news to share, send your logo and/or photo and information to lpierre@henrycounty.com and let us congratulate YOUR business!

Director Mollie Cole spoke with the class after lunch regarding the non-profit group’s outreach to the financiallychallenged in need of quality health care. The individuals and families seen by the clinic don’t typically qualify for assistance through the government and can receive services at little to no cost. One more tour awaited the group after Cole’s presentation. The Henry Radiation Oncology Center was the next stop for class members, and they had the opportunity to see some of the hi-tech, advanced equipment used by doctors in treating patients battling cancer. Karen Bouwman, a Cancer Navigator for the hospital, rounded out the day with a presentation on the Cancer Wellness Programs Piedmont Henry uses to meet the needs of the increasing number of patients fighting the various types of cancer. The last class of the year took place on April 29, and class members learned all about public safety in Henry County. Graduation for the Class of 2015 takes place on May 12. It has been an exciting and informational year for the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2015. They have been learning about the people and organizations in our community that make Henry County a great place to live. Class members have been exposed to public safety, education, healthcare, state government, and county history; broadening and deepening their knowledge about our community and how they can make it a better place. Past classes have really enjoyed their capstone community service project which allows them to put what they’ve learned in the program into action. In addition to being offered the opportunity to participate as a group in the community-wide Hands On Henry program, this year’s class put on a youth-only career fair as their legacy project. It was exciting to see our class members using their leadership skills to help other young people in their community. It really exemplified the servant leadership that the program is intended to develop in our class members.

Help the Chamber Welcome New Teachers to Henry County The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Henry County Schools in its pursuit of educational excellence by sponsoring the 2015 Teacher Induction Program (TIP) luncheon on July 23, 2015. The luncheon is part of a week-long orientation of new teachers to the Henry County School System.
