Message from the Chair

June Wood

Together…have we made Henry better?

T

hroughout this year, we have focused on working together to make Henry County better. A better place to live, work, play and pray. What were our contributions? Did we support more Henry County Businesses? Did we celebrate the service of our educators and leaders? Did we focus on the positives or do something that improved the image of our community? There will forever be an opportunity to make a positive difference. As I pass the Chamber’s Chair baton to Leonard Moreland, an awesome individual and leader, I pray that the seeds that have been planted encourage us all to accept our differences and unite, where possible, to make Henry County even greater than it is today. I must take this moment to express my appreciation to our chamber staff. David, Gary, Laura, Lydia, and Phyllis, you are awesome! It has been my honor to truly experience your hard work and dedication for the success of our chamber of commerce and community. For this and more, I say thank you! I am esteemed to have served with the many volunteers who have served as Ambassadors, Board of Directors, Committee Leaders and Committee

Members for the difference you make. You truly make your chamber membership a partnership. Because of your dedication, you have helped this county move forward and you have helped each other prosper. You have demonstrated the power of working together! We thank our State, County, City Representatives of Hampton, Locust Grove, McDonough, and Stockbridge for the collaboration that continues to strengthen this great county. I look forward to continuing our work towards the economic prosperity and wellness of our community.

Most importantly, we thank all of the members of our Chamber of Commerce. You offer services, products and leadership which makes it great and convenient for us to do business right here at home. Thank you also for allowing the chamber to serve as the voice for the business community, provide quality services and programs that meet your needs, improve the economic environment of our community and to create a legacy of your leadership. As I glance into the future, I look forward to the grand success of the “One

Henry” Initiative that is currently underway. This initiative will transform our community and help balance our hometown comfort and our opportunities for managed growth and economic prosperity. Thank you to those who are already involved in this countywide initiative co-led by the Chamber of Commerce and the Development Authority. We also invite those who have a passion and interest in our image,

There will forever be an opportunity to make a positive difference. arts & leisure, workforce development, professional services and industrial hub efforts to get involved. You may do so by going to henrycounty.com for more details. It is through this collaboration that our community will continue to work “Together making Henry Better”. It has indeed been an honor to serve you and our county as the 2015 Chair of our Henry County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

How Do You Describe

Your Business? By Cheryl Greenerl, Program Coordinator

Several times each week, I received calls from aspiring entrepreneurs seeking help from the SBDC to launch their new businesses. The callers are always eager to get started but no matter how passionate, determined and ready they sound, I always ask three questions: 1. Can you briefly describe the business? 2. What have you done so far to get this business off the ground? 3. Will you send me a copy of your business plan? Generally, the callers have no trouble talking about the steps they’ve already taken to get started. Often they’ve secured the business license, designed a logo and business cards, set up the LLC, even, scouted out a location for an office or retail space. However many of them tell me they don’t have a written business plan. But surprisingly, many have the most difficulty offering a brief description of their proposed venture. I actually talk to people who want our help to start a business but can’t clearly tell me what that business is. Their passion gets in the way of a succinct message about what they want to do. Being able to clearly describe your business, in a few sentences, is one of the most important tools an entrepreneur has. You must be able to quickly paint the picture for potential mentors, investors and customers. To tell your story, you must state the what, how, who, why, and where of your business in 30-60 seconds. What problem exists and what are you going to offer that will solve it? How will you solve that problem? How will you provide a quality product or

service? Who are your potential customers? Who is on your team? Why will people do business with you? Where will you operate this business and where are your customers? Many people refer to this as a business elevator pitch. The idea is that it’s an explanation of your venture that can be delivered in the time it takes to ride an elevator up several floors. But whatever you call the speech, if you can’t clearly describe your business in a few seconds, why should anyone take the time to invest or become a customer? In today’s world, with modern technology delivering almost everything in an instant, you must be prepared to explain your business before your lose the attention of your audience. Or worse, before they decide that you’re not worthy of their time and/ or money. Whether you’re just getting started or already in business, if you haven’t already done so, make the effort to move your business concept from your head to comprehensive written plan. Then extract a brief description and practice your delivery. Starting with these steps will not only give you a roadmap to reaching your goals, but will also help others see your vision and give them a reason to do business with you. The Small Business Development Center provides tools, training and resources to help small businesses grow and succeed. We’re located at Clayton State University and assist entrepreneurs in Henry, Clayton, Spalding and Fayette counties.

about Public Safety in our community

Members of the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2016 participated in their Public Safety Day on Tuesday, November 3rd. While most of their classmates were out of school for a Henry Schools professional development day, our class participants were learning about Public Safety in our community. We met at the 911 center; where Director of Emergency Services, Don Ash, welcomed us as we prepared to board the bus. We then went to Fire Station One. We learned a LOT about the equipment and training our firefighters receive, the surprising number of calls (they had 4 while we were there) they receive, and the variety of situations they need to be prepared for. Our class then returned to the 911 center, where we learned how our county prepares for potential

emergencies, and how we can do so personally and as families. We were also able to learn what the 911 operators do on the floor where calls were coming in and being dispatched. Our last stop was the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff McBrayer explained about the constitutional office of Sheriff, its history here, and a look at the evolution of the office over time. We then took a tour of the facility,

learning how he and his staff keep folks safe while awaiting trial. We had an amazing time, with many of our class of HS sophomores saying they had a whole new perspective of public safety after today. If you want to keep up with class events and programs, we encourage you to “like” the Youth Leadership Henry facebook page and follow us on Twitter @YLHenry.

Leadership Henry Learns about Public Safety in October The October Leadership Henry class focused on those who serve and protect the citizens of Henry County. The Henry County Fire Department hosted the first part of the day at the Fire Training Facility in McDonough. The first session of the day was presented by Captain Simmons of the Henry County Police Department. He shared about crime trends in the community as well as the various divisions within the police department and their respective roles. Following his presentation, the class moved outside where they got a firsthand look at some of the equipment used by the department and were treated to a demonstration by the K9 Unit. Chief Bill Lacy then spoke to the class about the Henry County

Fire Department and the fire and emergency services they provide. The class learned about the thirteen existing fire stations and corresponding equipment, and Chief Lacy shared about future expansion and additions before leading the class outside for an operation demonstration of some of his department’s equipment. Class members boarded the bus for a short drive over to the Henry County Emergency Operations and 911 Center where they enjoyed lunch and a presentation from the Emergency Management team. They also had the opportunity to tour the EOC and 911 Centers and learn about they serve the community. The final stop on this busy day was at the Henry County Jail, where they

met with Sheriff Keith McBrayer and his team. The class learned about the expansive operations of the facility which encompasses over 900 beds and 160 employees before getting a tour of the jail. Public Safety Day is always one of Leadership Henry’s favorite classes, and this year’s program was no exception. November’s program is Education Day and will include tours and presentations about some of the innovative education initiatives happening in Henry County.

FINANCIAL FOCUS Maximize the Benefits of Your Charitable Giving It’s certainly the season for giving – and when you make charitable gifts, you can both give and receive.

To get the most out of your gifts, your first step is to make sure you are giving to a worthy charity. That means you’ll need to ask some questions. How does a group measure its effectiveness? And does it use its money wisely? Is it devoting as much of its contributions as possible to the actual work of the organization, or is it spending too much money on administrative costs? Generally, a worthwhile charity should spend at least 75% of its income on programs.

its website. But if you want to dig deeper, and get information from an independent source, you may want to go to the website of one of the agencies that evaluates charitable groups. On these sites, you can get a lot of information dealing with a charity’s effectiveness, income, spending, mission, governance, transparency, executive salaries and other topics.

as a tax-exempt organization. Ask your intended charity for information on its tax status. Reputable nonprofits will be more than happy to offer proof.

But what if you’d rather not simply give cash to the charitable group? What if you’ve owned some stocks for several years, and the stocks no longer fit your investment needs? Should you sell the stocks and Once you’ve chosen a charity, then donate the proceeds to or charities, you can decide the charitable group? how much you want to give. But if you directly donate the appreciated stocks to the charity, you’ll get an immediate tax deduction, which is normally worth the property’s fair market value. And, perhaps even more importantly, you’ll avoid any capital gains taxes on the donated stocks’ appreciation. If you’ve held the stocks for a long time, and they’ve increased in value substantially, these capital gains taxes could be significant. Once you’ve donated the appreciated stocks to the charity, it can decide whether to hold them for a while or sell them immediately. In either case, though, you’ll have no capital gains tax obligation.

However you choose to make your gift, be sure to document it. Typically, no deduction is allowed for a contribution of $250 or more unless you have a written confirmation from the charity. Consult with your tax advisor on the specifics of the deductibility of your gifts. Finally, whether you give cash or appreciated assets, you’ll need to make your gift by Dec. 31 if you’re going to deduct it on your 2015 taxes. Charitable giving can benefit everyone. Your gift can help a group whose work you support, while at the same time providing you with potential tax advantages. That’s a winwin situation.
