Chairman’s Message By Taylor Rice
What We Did Over The Summer Fall is in the air, school is back in full swing and you can’t turn around without encountering the perennial question: “What did you do on summer vacation?” Here in Henry County you would be hardpressed to find any evidence of vacation. Instead, two hundred teachers were preparing for their first year in the Henry County School System, the Chamber’s E2: Economics & Education Task Force worked diligently to complete its recommendations for accomplishing lofty goals, a deal was brokered to purchase Tara Field airport from Clayton County, and Rebecca and I potty trained our son! Roughly two-hundred educators joined the ranks of our public school system this year. Their summer was spent in preparation; waiting for that moment of culmination when the first day of school began. In these austere times we should be proud of the efficiency that is the Henry County School System. A quick comparison with our neighbors to the north highlights our success. The Atlanta Public School System will educate an estimated 47,000 students with a budget of around $580 million. In case you are still on
vacation that breaks down to roughly $12,000 per student. On the other hand HCS will have an estimated 42,000 students and their matriculation will cost $284 million. Our teachers will educate slightly fewer students with a budget 51% smaller than the Atlanta Public Schools. For months now one-hundredplus volunteers have given of their time and talent to contribute to the E2 Task Force. The group comprised all segments of the community and brought insights from all walks of life. Goals were established early and then honed for maximum results. While their neighbors were going on road trips, the E2 Task Force met tirelessly in order to craft recommendations that will form the backbone of corporate involvement in our school system for years to come. As families wheeled their luggage through busy airport termi-
nals headed for tropical destinations, our county commissioners were engaged in negotiations to secure the Tara Field Airport for Henry County. Pondering the quote “A mile of roadway will get you a mile further down the road. A mile of runway will get you anywhere in the world,” and we can only imagine what this will mean for economic development in Henry County. Our family reached a milestone over the summer, Rebecca and I potty trained our son. The economic implications may not be as far-reaching, we didn’t enlist the help of 100 volunteers, and our budget was considerably smaller than $284 million, but our pride was immeasurable as we watched our son grow up right in front of us. We have accomplished much this summer and we all have a lot to be proud of here in Henry County. Get involved in the community, decide what you will do to help improve the lives of others, and when questioned about what you did over the summer remember it’s not boring to talk about school, airports, or going to the bathroom. Just be sure the person asking the question is ready for your response.

Tournament champions and Putting Green Contest winners will win attractive cash prizes at the awards dinner following the event. As always, lunch, dinner and on-
course beverages will be provided. You can still arrange to sponsor the golf tournament at the Platinum ($5,000); Gold ($2,500); or Silver ($1,500) level. A team of four can play at $750. Leadership Henry Selections made for Class of 2012
Chamber Bids Farewell to Summer Interns For the past few summers HCCC has enjoyed the benefits of having a summer intern; this year was no exception. In fact, due to unexpected circumstances, we had the pleasure of having not just one, but two very remarkable young women who made outstanding contributions during their brief tenure of June-July. Haley Stewart, who attended Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville utilized her education in Mass Communications and concentration in Public Relations and Advertising to enhance the Chamber and CVB’s marketing, particularly in the areas of social media. In return, the Chamber enabled Haley to attain the requisite number of hours of work in her field necessary to graduate and receive her degree. It was a real win-win situation. Sarah Boyd, a student at Gordon College in Barnesville where her focus is on Communications, also interned with the Chamber. She used the experience with the Chamber as an opportunity to build her resume and gain hands-on experience in her field. A highly motivated individual, Sarah not only completed a successful internship at HCCC, she continued to work full-time at the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House in Stockbridge as well.
Leadership Henry, a program patterned after Leadership Atlanta -- which is the oldest sustained community leadership program in the nation -- has selected the members who make up the 2011-2012 Class. Through retreats, full-day seminars, service projects, discussion groups and community and state government tours, members explore county issues, examine themselves as leaders and build relationships of trust and mutual understanding that serves them well as they network and collaborate on future issues and projects of importance to Henry County. This is the seventh class of select participants benefitting from this rewarding program. Past participants of Leadership Henry include a select group made up of many of the county’s civic and business leaders. The success of the program lies in the core mission -- to engage participants and enable them to succeed by providing a foundation that prepares them for positions of leadership and one that fosters relationships that result in synergy and collaboration.

Possessing a winning combination of both beauty and brains, Haley and Sarah shared receptionist duties and it did not go unnoticed that the number of Chamber visitors seemed to increase significantly while they were around! Given the professionalism, education, skills and work ethic of these two young ladies, they have a great future ahead. Together they set the bar for future Chamber interns. The only problem with having had them is having to see them go -- they are already greatly missed.

FINANCIAL FOCUS
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
Be Aware of Key Benefits of Life Insurance You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And while a whole month may seem like a long time to focus on life insurance, it’s actually a good opportunity for you to realize the important role that life insurance can play in your life. Unfortunately, many people don’t have sufficient insurance. A recent report by LIMRA, a research and consulting group, shows the following: • Individual life insurance ownership among U.S. households has reached a 50-year low. • Three out of every 10 households (about 35 million households) currently have no life insurance — an increase of 11 million households since 2004. These figures help explain why the nonprofit LIFE Foundation coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month each September. Simply put, many people don’t realize how many ways that life insurance can help them and their families. To be specific, life insurance can: • Educate your children — If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance policy can pay, in whole or in part, your children’s
college education. And if you live a normal life span, life insurance can help to pay for your grandchildren’s college education. • Pay off your mortgage — If you have sufficient life insurance, the death benefit can pay off your mortgage, so your family wouldn’t have to move. • Help pay for your spouse’s retirement — Your spouse might be counting on sharing some of the money you eventually withdraw from your retirement plans — such as your 401(k) and IRA — to help with his or her own retirement. If you were to die early, your spouse, as beneficiary, would receive the existing account balances in these plans, but your future contributions would, of course, die with you. • Help pay for your retirement — You don’t even have to die to reap some benefits from your life insurance. If you’ve purchased some form of permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, you have the opportunity to build a cash balance. And through policy loans or withdrawals, you can tap into this cash to help you pay some of your expenses during retirement. • Help you leave the legacy you
desire — Life insurance can be an important part of your estate plans. To use life insurance properly for estate planning, consult with your legal advisor. Of course, one big question that you may ask is this: How much life insurance do I need? You’ve probably seen those estimates that say you should have insurance that’s worth a certain number of years times your annual income. While this might not be a bad estimate, it’s not a hard-and-fast rule for every single individual. The amount of insurance you need will depend on a variety of factors: your age, income, size of family, value of home, employment situation and so on. Your financial advisor can help you determine the level of insurance that’s appropriate for your needs. Now that you’ve seen how life insurance may help you over the years, and you’ve got a sense of how to determine the amount of coverage you need, you can appreciate the message behind Life Insurance Awareness Month — so A life insurance policy will provide you with the take it to heart and make sure you’ve actual ability to have a positive influence on the got the proper insurance plan in place. future of those you love.

FTC COMPLETES REVIEW OF PROPOSED PARTNERSHIP Piedmont Healthcare and Henry Medical Center to Advance Partnership Transaction Process
(Stockbridge/Atlanta) AUGUST 11, 2011 – Piedmont Healthcare and Henry Medical Center officials announced today that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued notification of its completion of review of the required Hart-Scott-Rodino filing regarding the proposed partnership of the two organizations. The Hart-Scott-Rodino Act established the federal premerger notification program, providing the FTC and the Department of Justice with information about large mergers and acquisitions before they occur. The established waiting period must pass or the government must grant early termination of the waiting period before the parties can proceed. On Wednesday, Piedmont Healthcare (PHC) and Henry Medical Center (HMC) were notified that the FTC had issued an early termination, reflecting compliance with all requirements and rules and completion of review by the FTC and the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. “We were pleased with the news from the FTC, completing one additional and essential step on our partnership journey with Henry Medical Center,” said R. Timothy Stack, president and CEO of Piedmont Healthcare. “Both organizations continue to work diligently to ensure the fruition of this relationship in the best interest of the community served by Henry Medical Center.” “As we anticipate final approval of the partnership documents and prepare the required filing with the Attorney General,
we were pleased to learn that this important review by the FTC and Department of Justice was concluded favorably,” said Charlie Scott, president and CEO of Henry Medical Center. “We are most grateful for the support of our employees, physicians and community as we advance the partnership process. In particular, we appreciate the letters of support that we were able to share with these federal antitrust agencies from community leaders including Henry County Schools, the City of Stockbridge, the City of Locust Grove, the Henry County Board of Commissioners and the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.” Greg Hurst, executive vice president and COO for Piedmont Healthcare, added, “We are eager to proceed with the next phase of our relationship with Henry Medical Center. As not-for-profit organizations devoted to serving the needs of our communities, we share a common mission, vision and set of values aimed at improving the health and lives of local residents by delivering the highest standards of care balanced with compassion and caring. We bring with us a strong spirit of collaboration, world-class quality care, and a solid track record and success in running community hospitals.” Over the next 90 to 120 days, partnership terms will have final approval by both parties, and additional necessary regulatory approvals will be pursued prior to the signing of definitive agreements, with projected “go live” of the new organization by January 2012.
