So you have a small business, and you’re doing okay. You could do better, though, if you didn’t give a lot of discounts or freebies to family and friends. You don’t mind helping your mom, but when your mom’s friend from the neighborhood asks you to help her out, you know she doesn’t really want to pay what you normally charge. So you give her a discount, or allow her to just cover costs. The problem is, these “friends and family” discounts add up. Many small business owners don’t keep an adequate count of how much they give away when they give products/ services for door prizes, give discounts to acquaintances, or donate their services for events. Not only are they potentially losing tax deductions, they are also skewing the true cost of doing business. Every business owner should use the data from his/her financial statements to plan and make adjustments to strategy, but when the data isn’t accurate, it’s hard to

measure the impact. We advise that business owners do two things when asked for discounts, donations, and giveaways: 1) Keep accurate records of everything you discount or give away, whether it’s to a legitimate charity or to friends/family. These smaller amounts can add up, so make sure you count everything. 2) Create written policies for yourself and your employees to use when asked for discounts and giveaways. It’s easier to answer a request for a discount when you have a policy (even if it’s just for yourself) to follow. You won’t be tempted to give away too much, and you will start viewing these discounts and giveaways as business transactions rather than personal gifts. When explaining your policy to the person, remember that you are operating a business, and never apologize for doing so. Once your business is in a good financial place, you can afford to be generous.

Piedmont Henry Hospital hosts Leadership Henry for Healthcare Day Members of the Leadership Henry class were treated to a full day of presentations, demonstrations and tours as part of Healthcare Day at Piedmont Henry Hospital in March. The class started the morning with an overview of Piedmont’s Cardiovascular Training Program and a tour of their Education Ambulance by Grant Reynolds. Class members were then treated to a cooking demonstration by Chef Beki while learning about the Thomas Chapman Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Henry. Dr. Sam Lorenzo, Medical Director of

Emergency Services, led a discussion on leadership and discussed the changes and renovations currently happening in the Emergency Department which is currently under renovation. The new facility will allow hospital staff to more effectively treat patients and expand current capacity. Following a terrific lunch prepared by the Piedmont food service staff, Mollie Cole visited the class to talk about Hands of Hope Clinic, Henry County’s only charitable care clinic. Since its inception in 2004, Hands of Hope has served almost 4,000 patients through over

18,500 patient visits. Kimberly Stabler led the class on a tour of the Henry Radiation Oncology Center, a community based cancer treatment center on the campus of Piedmont Henry, where they learned about some of the cutting edge treatment programs

and technology being utilized. Jennifer Wolfe also presented on the Wound Healing Center at Piedmont and how they help patients with hard to heal wounds. One of the highlights of the day was a tour of the Neonatal Intensive Care unit, led by Roxie

Plemons, where they saw firsthand where they care for their smallest patients. The class also learned about Cardiovascular Services from Wendy McCullough. Piedmont Henry CEO Charlie Scott closed the day by sharing the Piedmont story and talking about

the future of the hospital system. The Piedmont staff always does a great job hosting Leadership Henry, and this year was no exception! Thanks to all who helped arrange this very busy day of touring and learning.

CHAMBER BRIEFS Youth Leadership Henry hosts their Second Annual Youth Job Fair CONGRATULATIONS TO... Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…

The City of Stockbridge supported the Child Abuse Prevention Month (April) with the Paint Henry Blue campaign. Along with the blue pinwheels being placed in front of City Hall, the City’s water fountain was blue for the entire month of April. Luella High School senior, Shanice Pride, has been recognized as the Student of the Month(February) for Henry County Schools’ WorkBased Learning initiative. Pride has a 3.9 grade point average, is an intern at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the Youth Leadership Henry class, as a service project to give back to our community and demonstrate their leadership skills, put on a Job Fair open to young people in Henry County ages 16 to 24. The fair was held from 10AM to 2PM in the Commons area of Henry County High School on Monday March 14. This was a Professional Development day for Henry Schools, so students were out of school that day and could attend this weekday event. When doing the inaugural Youth Job Fair last year, Youth Leadership Henry learned that employers prefer to have these events on a weekday, and this year’s employer participation certainly showed that!

There were 50 employers present, and many “elevator speeches” and résumés delivered during the fair. Several job offers were extended, and many second interviews were scheduled. Students that are graduating were able to explore full-time jobs, many students learned about seasonal jobs, while some explored opportunities for workbased learning placements for the upcoming school year. Everyone that participated learned a lot, about opportunities in the community and about marketing themselves effectively. Keep an eye out for this event again next year, as the class members help put career aspirants together with potential employers.

Members and non-members alike traded business cards and mingled throughout the evening at the March Chamber After Hours event on March 24, 2016. Professionals from around the community attended the event that was hosted by Signarama McDonough on

Dailey Mill Road and enjoyed the delicious light catering samples from Planet Frojo’s newly launched Catering Menu. Guests also enjoyed a door prize drawing. Unfortunately, no one who was called was present to win the Jackpot drawing. You can see a brief video from this event by visiting the Chamber’s YouTube page. Thank you to everyone who attended – your engagement in our effort makes a difference in so many ways!

Networking is the art of forming and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with others who are linked to your career, sector, market, region or specific interest. Successful networking can help you to raise your profile, meet new customers, develop your knowledge or skills, explore new ideas, find investment, establish

partnerships, build a presence in other markets and source new suppliers. Given sufficient time and energy, your networks could become one of your business’ most valuable assets. Often confused with selling, networking is actually about building long-term relationships and a good reputation over time. It involves meeting and getting to know people who you can assist, and who can potentially help you in return. If you think your networking efforts could use improvement, then you do not want to miss the May 19 Business Boosters Luncheon. In this luncheon learn why it is important to be able to network and create contacts that may become potential customers (or employers) in the future. Then we’ll practice these techniques on each other. You’re sure to leave this program more informed about networking effectively.

The discounted cost for this catered lunch for those who register and pay online is $12 for Chamber members and $20 for non-members. An additional charge of $3.00 will be applied for those who pay at the door. Reservations are required by May 17 for planning purposes and can be made online at www.henrycounty. com under “Events” - select the BBL event on May 19. To cover catering costs, no-shows will be expected to make payment. Lunch will be catered by

MARCH BUSINESS

BOOSTERS LUNCHEON RECAP The Henry County Chamber of Commerce hosted its monthly Business Boosters Luncheon at the Chambers Hudgins Room on Thursday March 17, 2016. This event was a great opportunity to showcase what One Henry is looking to accomplish within the community as well as to stress the importance of working cohesively as a community. Henry County sits in close proximity to some of the key infrastructure components necessary for a thriving economy. With this in mind, Henry County is poised to become a leader in Metro Atlanta in the coming years as it pertains to being a hub for economic growth. Recognizing this, a diversified group of residents and business community members in the county have banded together to assist Henry County in promoting a unified effort from within with a coordinated effort to position the county as a key piece to the economic viability of the region. The group’s efforts are now known as One Henry: People, Partnerships, and Economic Prosperity. Community and business leaders packed the room at today’s Henry County Chamber of Commerce BBL all to hear about One Henry and how they

can get plugged in. Those in attendance learned more about the history and structure of One Henry and how they could join forces to ultimately make a difference for the future of Henry County’s economy. The event resulted in many positive conversations and great dialogue about the great things happening in Henry County. “We were pleased to be able to present our vision for One Henry and the positive impact it is set to have on the county for years to come. It is our hope that those in attendance at the Business Boosters Luncheon and anyone else in Henry County who has a passion for helping our county grow to great heights together will join our efforts and find one of our five subcommittees to their interest” --- J.D. Hardin, Communications & Community Relations Coordinator for Henry County Schools and Co-Chair of the One Henry Image &
