“Leader. We all have different definitions of what makes a leader. We’ve met them, worked with them, heard of them. Their legendary names echo through the halls of every parks and recreation department in the state. Names like Daniel, Perry, Clegg, Bledsoe, Studstill, and Cooper. They are people we never forget. At conferences and meetings, people think of them with smiles and awe, remembering the fundamental roles such leaders played in their careers. They are cornerstones of our profession, titans upon which the foundations of modern parks and recreation departments have been built. They molded the departments in the early days and led through the darkest days. Though most have gone on to enjoy welldeserved retirement, one such leader remains in our ranks...”
These are the words we wrote about Tim Coley for the GRPA magazine. We had no idea that in a few short months we would lose the man who had led us for so many years, yet here we are, tasked with trying to put into words what he meant to us. When we wrote the article above, we wanted to use a certain word to describe him, but he felt that he had not “earned” that word. We disagreed then, and we most certainly disagree now. Therefore, we submit to you one final edit to the article we wrote, an edit that describes exactly how much we loved and respected the man who changed all of our lives:
Tim Coley is a legend.

Tim Coley (1961-2023)
“Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.”
-Babe Ruth
Jonathon “J.P.” Penn Cluster Lead Leisure and Public Services
“Henry Cares. Henry Committed.” is not something we just say. It’s a belief that defines who we are as a county. That message has never rung so true as right now. As summer dawns, we embark on a new adventure that is transforming Parks and Recreation. We are redefining the role of Park Maintenance, expanding Athletics with a commitment to inclusivity, deepening our commitment to academic recreation, and streamlining our dayto-day operations. We’re reaching more and more people every day with our promise to provide excellent, caring, committed service to the people of Henry County. Tim Coley constantly reminded us that everything we do is about the people. We work when they play. We provide them with experiences they will remember. We better their lives. Tim Coley taught us what it meant to be Henry Committed, and as we carry out our mission to you, we remember him and the lessons he taught.
