Workplace Wellness Cigna Health, in partnership with the Human Resources Department, is brainstorming a new program for Henry County that will aim to engage more employees in health and wellness related activities. This “Wellness Committee” will be a collective space that will streamline employee wellness event and program ideas. Cigna Onsite Health Coach, Melodi Ford, hopes that eventually each department in the County will have their own Wellness Representative who serves on the Wellness Committee and ultimately speaks for their department’s respective interests and goals. A short, interest meeting for this new Wellness Committee will take place on January 6, 2015 at noon in Conference Room B. Any employee interested in joining the program or learning more about the commitment of serving as a Wellness Representative should attend.

SAFETY FIRST Winter Weather Safety with Vincent Scott, Risk Manager.
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this winter will be chilly and wet in the Southeast. The potential for an employee getting a “cold stress injury” can be mitigated by wearing proper clothing for the season, recognizing signs and symptoms and knowing the treatment for cold weather related injuries. What constitutes “cold stress” and its effects can vary across different areas of the country. In regions that are not used to winter weather, near freezing temperatures are considered factors for “cold stress.” Increased wind speed also causes heat to leave the body more rapidly (wind chill effect). Wetness or dampness, even from body sweat, also facilitates heat loss from the body. Cold stress occurs by driving down the skin’s temperature, and eventually the body’s internal temperature. When the body is unable to warm itself, serious cold-related illnesses and injuries may occur, and permanent tissue damage and death may result. Types of cold stress include: trench foot, frostbite, and hypothermia. Whether it’s rain, sleet, snow or wind, drivers must be prepared to face the hazards winter driving brings. Without proper preparation, these conditions could lead to a tragic accident. Don’t ask your vehicle to do more than it can. If you don’t feel comfortable driving your car, park it. Proper planning, preparation and driving can result in successful completion of a trip. The Inbox
