Henry County Fire Department Honors DOT Employee for His Support Johnny Barkley, Henry County Department of Transportation Construction Manager, was named “Honorary Battalion Chief and presented a white helmet in recognition of his dedication to Henry County and the support he has always shown to the Henry County Fire Department. The presentation came during the Henry County Commission meeting held on January 9, 2014. Members of Fire Station Number One and Chief Officers were in attendance to honor Mr. Barkley. According to Operations Chief

Brad Johnson, for as long as Johnny has worked in Henry County, he has always been very responsive and supportive when called on by the Henry County Fire Department. January 16, 2014 Local Police Officers Grant Christmas Wish to Sick Little Boy Several members of the Henry County Police Department, who are also members of the local Fraternal Order of Police, braved chilly Christmas Eve temperatures volunteering to fill a Christmas wish for a sick child in neighboring Rockdale County. Henry County Police Officer and president of Henry County FOP Lodge 95, Wayne Bender, led the charge in making ten-year old Dylan Rosier’s wish come true by giving him a “White Christmas.” Just before Christmas, lodge members received word that a little boy who is fighting leukemia, asked Santa for a cure for cancer. When asked what else he wanted,

Dylan said he wanted a white Christmas. Professional photographer, Jennifer Snook, heard Dylan’s request to Santa and told her husband, Sergeant Patrick Snook, who is a Henry County Police Officer and member of Lodge 95. They rallied lodge members and others for the volunteer effort. Lodge members secured an ice and snow making machine and along with volunteers, spent several hours of Christmas Eve into the early morning hours of Christmas, making it snow at Dylan’s home in Conyers.

Honored Employee from 1 one example of the dedication and willingness to help, exemplified by Mr. Johnny Barkley. “I have never called on Johnny for assistance that I didn’t receive it. He has always gone over and beyond my expectations in assisting fire ground operations and he is a pleasure to work with,” stated Chief Johnson, during the presentation. The Henry County Fire Department thanks Mr. Johnny Barkley, “Honorary Battalion Chief” and all who support the fire department in their effort to serve and protect the citizens of Henry County.

Fairview Medical Center Moving Forward in North Henry North Henry County is on track for a transformation that will bring jobs, opportunities and medical resources to the Fairview area, including continued progress on the Fairview Medical Center project and the Fairview Road Widening project. It was back in June that more than 200 people came out to join the Henry County Board of Commissioners, District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes, Nidus Development and the SPLOST Department for a groundbreaking ceremony on the two transformative projects that are set to change the face of the Fairview area, serving to improve access to healthcare, stimulate commerce in the area and improve commute times for citizens. The Fairview Road project is one of the biggest transportation projects remaining on Henry County’s

SPLOST III project list. It consists of widening to four lanes 1.85 miles of roadway from Anvil Block Road to just beyond the intersection of Panola and Fairview roads, and four signalized intersections that will feature decorative stamped concrete crosswalks, mast arm signal poles and lighted street names. In addition, decorative light posts and enhanced landscaping will add to the curb appeal in the commercial area. N i d u s Development is moving forward with plans for the development of the Fairview Medical Campus and the Shoppes at Fairview, with a planned 80,000 square feet of medical space and 80,000 square feet of retail space. Nidus officials are proud to report that leasing activity has been vigorous on both the medical and

Henry County Fire Department Awarded Grant Henry County Emergency Management Agency, along with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, will be hosting a free Damage Assessment Training session on January 21, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Henry County Emergency Operations Center. Damage assessment is one of the most important elements of the Henry County EMA response to an emergency or disaster. It allows teams to determine what happened, what areas were hardest hit, where priority must be given and what type of assistance is needed. Upon completion of the training session, participants will be able to:

Medical Center from 3 retail sides and they have selected a site contractor and expect site work to begin in the first quarter of 2014. The Fairview Medical Center is projected to employ over 1,300 people directly and indirectly, with an estimated economic impact of $185 million. The much anticipated medical campus is a result of the fact that Northern Henry County has been historically underserved by the medical community. Nidus Development is answering that need, and will provide a mechanism to jumpstart a new level of commerce and industry in this crossroads for Clayton, DeKalb, Rockdale and Henry Counties. It will be the first phase of a major mixed use campus planned for the area to include an upscale, village concept retail component. The medical offices and retail/hospitality space will be set on a campus that will feature a park-

like setting with splash fountains, green spaces, and walking trails. “We are very excited about the Fairview project and about the progress we are making behind the scenes,” said Dr. Greg Daniel, MBA, President and CEO, Nidus Development. “Our project, in conjunction with the Fairview road widening project, will lead to a thriving new commercial district that will be a catalyst for economic development in Henry County.” About Nidus Development: Headquartered in Amherst, New York, Nidus Development is a boutique commercial real estate development company, specializing in original campuses with progressive medical office space and retail environments. Free Storm Spotter Classes set for February 11 If you are a weather enthusiast and are interested in a unique opportunity to serve your community, be sure to reserve your spot in the Henry County Emergency Management Agency’s Storm Spotter Class, to be held in February at the Henry County Emergency Operations Center in McDonough. In conjunction with the Henry County Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service Office in Peachtree City will be offering two Basic Storm Spotter Classes on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The training is free but space is limited, and those interested should register by Monday, February 4. Weather spotters have served as the “eyes” of the National Weather Service for more than 60 years, assisting in the process to warn their communities of

potentially hazardous weather. Although the National Weather Service utilizes cutting edge technology, such as Doppler radar and hi-resolution satellite imagery, nothing has proven more effective than the human eye to observe and report adverse weather. The training session will focus on preparing individuals to report severe weather, including funnel clouds, tornadoes, hail, damaging winds and flooding rainfall. In addition, the importance of weather safety, when observing and reporting critical weather, will be discussed. The Henry County Emergency Operations Center is located at 526 Industrial Boulevard in McDonough. Those interested in attending one of the classes should contact EMA Officer Shelita Broomfield at sbroomfield@co.henry.ga.us to reserve a space.
