Keisha Pattillo holds the Bible for her husband Darius Pattillo as he is sworn in as Henry County’s new District Attorney by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Tangela M. Barrie. The ceremony took place at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge on January 12, 2017.
About 300 residents, elected officials and friends watched Thursday evening as Darius Pattillo was sworn in as Henry County’s new District Attorney. “It was such an honor to have so many friends, mentors and leaders there to support me,” said Pattillo. “I know that I could not be here today without so many of these people believing in me and working alongside me.” DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Tangela M. Barrie, a longtime friend and former colleague, administered the oath to Pattillo at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge. Pattillo’s wife stood beside him, while family, friends, fellow lawyers and elected officials from throughout the region applauded. Prior to the oath, J. Comer Yates, executive director of the Atlanta Speech School, and S. Wade Malone, a partner at Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, talked about first meeting Pattillo as an intern and graduate of Atlanta’s Therrell High School. They talked about how Pattillo, a former Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney in DeKalb County, has never forgotten his roots and continues his commitment to mentoring youth. Continued on page 2

Commissioners Recognize Young Man for Service to the Community

meeting for his work in the community on behalf of a local food pantry. Commissioners honored preschooler Treandos Lisco Thornton for organizing a local food drive over the holiday season which benefitted the United Food Force in McDonough, GA. The certificate read, in part “In recognition of four year-old Treandos Thornton of McDonough for his successful effort of initiating a holiday food drive which benefitted the United Food Force, and just like Treandos’ favorite superheroes, Superman and Batman, he is a superhero to those who were helped from his selfless and gracious act…” Commissioners presented Treandos with a Certificate of Appreciation for his generous work on behalf of the community.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners recognized the Henry County Elections Department and Director Tina Lunsford for their outstanding work during the past election cycle, after facing several challenges, including having to relocate their longtime office. This past election cycle included a primary, presidential and runoff elections where staff saw a large voter turnout.
“For providing exceptional service and assistance to voters, the Henry County Board of Commissioners wishes to thank the Henry County Elections Department for their many contributions to the community,� read the certificate. The certificate was presented at the January 17 regular Commission meeting.
Commissioner Selected as Honoree for Charity Reception Henry County District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes has been selected by the Made Man organization as an honoree for its annual Celebrity Charity Reception and Suit Drive, which will be held on January 26, 2017 at the 595 North Event Center in Atlanta. Holmes joins several other men of influence and celebrities for a night of giving back, networking and celebrating the many contributions and accomplishments of a prestigious roster of honorees. The Made Man Honoree Reception is a national initiative acknowledging and honoring the
achievements of community leaders while building a bridge to empower achievement for underserved men. The Made Man campaign solicits notable influencers from the civic, business, entertainment and community activist arenas to volunteer their resources and donate business clothing to support underserved men. The Henry County Board of Commissioners lauded the outstanding work of the Henry County Police Department’s K-9 unit in a letter presented at the January 17 Commission meeting on behalf of the BOC and initiated by District IV Commissioner Blake Prince. The letter detailed the activities of the K-9 Unit over the past year and included various details on the amount of drugs the officers and their animal companions were able to take off the streets. Over the past year, the keen actions of the K-9 Unit resulted in the seizure of more than $1.58 million worth of narcotics, cash and asset seizures. Included in that figure was 101 felony arrests, 109 misdemeanor arrests, and the confiscation of 112 pounds of marijuana, nine pounds of methamphetamine, nearly one and half pounds of heroin, two pounds of ecstasy and 14 pounds of scheduled pills. The letter also detailed the intense training that officers and their canines perform, including offsite

formal education. The K-9 Unit, under the direction of Sergeant Jason Black, is made up of three dedicated K-9 teams who are certified and re-certified every year with the National Police Canine Association. These teams also attend an advanced K-9 Narcotics Detection class each year and train twice monthly as a unit in narcotic detection, tracking and apprehension, as well as perform weekly training exercises “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Henry County Police Department’s K-9 Unit for the outstanding job they do each and every day for the citizens of Henry County. These words of appreciation are a heartfelt tribute to a unit of the Henry County Police Department that often goes unmentioned,” wrote Prince in the letter. Black and Officer Nicholas Jackson, Officer Philip Dillard and Officer Kyle Ramsey make up the Special Operations Division K-9 Unit of the Henry County Police Department, and were on hand to receive the letter from the Board of Commissioners.
The Henry County Development Authority Welcomes New Board Members
Pictured L to R: David Gill, David Linton, Judge Kelley Powell, Henry County Probate Court, and Geoffrey Cauble The Henry County Development Authority welcomed its newest board members as David Linton (representing District 2) and David Gill (representing District 4) were sworn in by Judge Kelley Powell, Henry County Probate Court at the Authority’s board meeting held on January 5, 2017. Linton is a seasoned executive with a career encompassing journalism, radio broadcasting and recorded music promotion and marketing. Regarding his appointment to the Henry County Development Authority Board of Directors, Linton stated, “I’m honored to have been chosen by Commissioner Dee Clemmons (District 2) for this position. Henry County has experienced a tremendous amount of growth over the years and has an extraordinary opportunity for further economic growth, without sacrificing the characteristics which makes this a great county to live in. I look forward to working with the members of the Henry County Development Authority which has been
at the forefront of our county’s economic growth.” Gill currently serves as President and CEO of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and is no stranger to the Henry County Development Authority. Gill previously served on the HCDA Board of Directors for 12 years. He shared that he is “delighted to continue working with the Henry County Development Authority to further the great work of promoting economic development in Henry County through the attraction of new investment and jobs and the retention and expansion of existing industries.” Returning to the Henry County Development Authority for another 4-year term are Geoffrey Cauble (representing District 1) and Charles Mobley (representing District 3). The Henry County Development Authority also held elections for officers at its January Board of Directors meeting. Geoffrey Cauble was elected to serve as Chairman and David Gill was elected to serve as Secretary/Treasurer. “I’m privileged to serve on the board of the Henry County Development Authority,” stated Cauble. “The Henry County Development Authority works to strengthen the County’s economy by locating and retaining local and national companies in our county. Henry County is an incredible community of talented people with a tremendous workforce, education system and access to national and global markets.” The HCDA staff welcomes its new and returning Board of Director members and look forward to working with them to bring new business opportunities and investment to Henry County.
