District III Commissioner Gary Barham, District IV Commissioner Blake Prince and District I Commissioner Johnny Wilson, joined by SPLOST and other County officials were on hand to cut the ribbon on the newly opened roundabout at East Lake Rd and SR 20 in McDonough on Monday, February 13. The roundabout was approved by GDOT as the only option for improvements to the intersection, which had been the scene of several serious accidents over the years. According to Roque Romero, Henry County’s SPLOST Transportation Director, SR 20 is a state roadway under control of the Georgia Department of Transportation, and after conducting studies of the East Lake/SR 20 intersection, GDOT officials determined that a roundabout was the correct course of action for safety improvements at the intersection.

More than 300 residents turned out for District II Commissioner Dee Clemmons’ first town hall meeting, held on February 9 at Nash Farm Park in Hampton. Clemmons discussed public safety, planning and zoning and economic development and took questions from those in attendance. Several fellow Board members were also in attendance, and county officials were on hand to discuss relevant issues, and talk about department initiatives.
Ribbon Cutting from page 1 Commissioner Barham gave a brief history of the project, explaining that although there was resistance to a roundabout, it has turned out to be a great intersection improvement. He also explained the delays with the project due to unforeseen utility relocation challenges. “The county did a great job and I want to thank the staff at SPLOST and everybody that helped put this together as it has turned out to be a nice project,” said Barham. “I came through here last night and with the lights lit up in here, it really sets it all off. I hope that this is going to be the model of the future roundabouts in Henry County.” Commissioner Blake Prince thanked the citizens for their support of the much-needed project. “Henry County Commissioners are devoted to henrycounty-ga.org
transportation solutions here in Henry County. This project is one that was needed. It’s one of the first major roundabouts we’ve had in the county this size,” said Prince. “You’ll notice the way it’s setup you can get into it at a good rate of speed and it’s safe. Much safer than a red light. This is the kind of roundabout that we’ll be looking to as a model, and we appreciate the public’s support for these projects.” The SPLOST IV project was designed by McGee Partners and constructed by Baldwin Paving Company. Total cost of the project was $2,243,532 which included the cost of right of way acquisition, design, utility relocation and construction.
