Henry County Police Officer, Marc Rommelman was awarded the 2018 GECC Award of Excellence on March 7, at the Georgia Emergency Communications Conference in Columbus, Georgia. Rommelman was recognized for his dedicated professionalism in the service to the citizens of the state of Georgia, as well as his general selflessness and kindness to others in public safety. Building and Plan Review Department Presents Update to Commission The Henry County Board of Commissioners received a presentation from the Building and Plan Review Director George Patterson at the regular Commission meeting, explaining the roles and accomplishments of the department over the past year. Patterson said that staff works diligently, completing training to stay informed and up to date with code and trade courses and participates in various opportunities to enrich the community through volunteerism and outreach. The Henry County Building and Plan Review Department is also a newly certified local issuing authority which allows the department to review building plans in-house, expediting the permit process to provide a high level of quality customer service. SPLOST Presents Update to Commission SPLOST Transportation Director Roque Romero presented an updated SPLOST report to the Henry County Board of Commissioners at the regular Commission meeting on March 6, 2018, detailing the progress of numerous transportation projects throughout the county. The presentation gave a breakdown and progression of projects, county-wide, as well as throughout the five districts. Combining all five districts, there are 68 transportation projects, 43 have

been completed and the remainder are still in progress. Completed projects include the Locust Grove over Indian Creek bridge repair, the Jonesboro over Walnut Creek bridge repair, the Candler Road surface treatment, the Old Conyers over Big Cotton Indian Creek bridge repair and the Stagecoach over Big Cotton Indian Creek bridge repair. HCFD Celebrates Recruit Graduation

The Henry County Fire Department celebrated its newest graduating class on March 9 with a graduation ceremony that took place at the McDonough Christian Church The 19 members of HCFD Recruit Class 1701 received their diplomas and fire helmets and took their oaths surrounded by family, friends and county leadership. Training Chief Luther Phillips praised their accomplishments and challenged each recruit
to continue their education. At the conclusion of the ceremony, recruit Zachery Butts was awarded the Best Boot Award. The award recognized one individual from the class who demonstrated the ability to excel in academics, skill evaluations, physical fitness and teamwork. The recruits completed more than 640 hours of comprehensive firefighter training and begin their new shift assignments this week.

Several officials and leaders with Henry County Government joined the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, various city officials and members of the public at the Capitol Building for Henry County Day at the Capitol. Although lawmakers were not in session, attendees were greeted by several legislators and had an opportunity to ask specific questions about bills

going through this year’s legislative session. Henry County Planning and Economic Development Director Daunte` Gibbs had an opportunity to discuss the Comprehensive Plan Update and County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews took a few minutes to remind everyone about the county’s new SeeClickFix app.
County Manager and two HCFD employees Honored at Women’s History Month Ceremony
Henry County Government County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews was honored by the city of Stockbridge in celebration of Women’s History Month on Monday, March 12 at Stockbridge City Hall. Matthews was recognized for her outstanding contributions and as the first African American and first
female county manager. She was joined by several other notable women, including Captain Janet SlagleRobinson who is the highest ranking woman in HCFD’s Field Operations Division, and Lieutenant Wanda Sue Maddox with the Fire Department’s Prevention Division.

March 15, 2018 Chair June Wood Sworn-in to State Board of Corrections
Henry County Chair June Wood takes the oath from Governor Nathan Deal, sworn in as a member of the Georgia Board of Corrections.
Henry County Commission Chair June Wood was sworn in by Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia State Board of Corrections. The ceremony was held on March 6 in the Governor’s Ceremonial Office at the Capitol Building in Atlanta. Wood was appointed last year to serve on the 19-member board and represents the Thirteenth Congressional District. The Governor appoints all members, subject to the consent of the State Senate,
to staggered five-year terms. The Board of Corrections is a policy-making, statutory board whose duties and responsibilities include governing the conduct and welfare of employees under its authority. Board members serve on the various following committees: Budget/Utilities, Correctional Industries/Food & Farm, Education/Recidivism, Facilities, Health Services and Nominations.

BOC Approves SAFER Grant The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency for the Henry County Fire Department. The action came at the March 6 Commission meeting. The SAFER grant was awarded to HCFD in the amount of $3,722,673 to be dispersed over three years and will be used to employ 27 firefighters and medics. This grant requires Henry County to match funds over the next three years. In fiscal year 2018, the county will provide a 25 percent match of $627,308; in fiscal year 2019 the county will provide $533,304 or 25 percent and in fiscal year 2020, the required match is 65 percent or $1,338,207. According to Deputy Fire Chief Chris Sherwood, the 27 employees will take the HCFD from 310 to 337
authorized strength, bringing the county closer to meeting standards of three firefighters to a fire truck with the ultimate goal of four people to a truck over the next ten years. He said the purpose of the grant is to provide firefighters on the scene and on fire apparatus. In related public safety news, Commissioners also approved the purchase of 20 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and 11 SCBA canisters from Municipal Emergency Services. Funds for the devices were approved at the August 1, 2017 Commission meeting and will be allocated from the Capital budget. Board Approves Additional Funding for Transportation Services The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved the amended 2018 fiscal year Department of Human Services Coordinated Transportation grant at the regular March 6 Commission meeting. The Georgia Department of Human Services Coordinated Transportation System provides transportation services for eligible, elderly and disabled

individuals who attend and participate in vital services offered by Senior Services, Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health Clinics, Department of Family and Children Services and Department of Labor. The additional amount added to the FY 2018 contract is $32,497.97 and the revised total is $731,381.89.
