Henry County Parks and Recreation Offers Summer Day Camp

The end of another school year will be here before we know it and what better way to keep your children busy, safe and happy all summer long than by participating in Henry County Parks and Recreation’s Summer Day Camp? The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering a Summer Day Camp for what promises to a be fun-filled, summer experience. Camp field trips include High Falls swimming, Starlite Skating, Medieval Times, the World of Coke, Sky Zone, a Braves game, the Georgia Aquarium, a tour of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Pin Strikes Bowling and Laser Tag. Camp begins May 29 and continues hrough the summer to July 27. Summer camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each weekday and is for children ages 5 to 12. There will be no camp the week of July 2 to July 6. Camps will be held at the Bear Creek Recreation Center in Hampton, Heritage Park in McDonough, the Locust Grove Recreation Center in Locust Grove and the Fairview and J. P. Moseley Recreation Centers in Stockbridge. Each week of camp costs just $110 and a $10 discount will be given for each additional family member. The fee includes all of the field trips and activities, with breakfast and lunch provided. Families may register for any or all weeks of camp. Registration is open and is being held Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heritage Park or any of the recreation centers mentioned above. Connecting Henry Holds Toiletry Collection Drive Connecting Henry is hosting its first toiletry collection drive to benefit the Showers of Blessings Street Ministry that provides hot showers, clothes and hot meals for the homeless. Henry County Stormwater to Hold Paint Recycling Event Don’t dump your unused paint down the drain or trash it. Bring it to Henry County’s Paint Recycling Event on May 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stormwater Department Office. For a nominal fee, paint that is unused and still in its original container will be accepted. Chair Helps Break Ground for Southern Gateway
Henry County Chair June Wood along with PNK Group and partners broke ground on Southern Gateway on Wednesday, March 22 at Lambert Farms in McDonough. The 1.1 million-square-foot cross-dock distribution facility is the first building on the property that is expected to equal more than three million square feet including an adjacent 1.5 million-squarefoot building and two rear-load facilities. Pat Murphy of Cushman & Wakefield expressed that Southern Gateway at Lambert Farms is a labor-
focused development offering top-of-the-line employee amenities, superior construction and speed to market. According to Murphy, Southern Gateway at Lambert Farms will offer high-end amenities aimed toward employee attraction and retention that are traditionally found more in an office space than thought of for an industrial property. Features include a 1.2mile landscaped walking trail, a food truck court with recreational amenities and electric vehicle charging stations.

April 6, 2018 Chair Wood Gives State of the County Address Henry County Commission Chair June Wood delivered the 2018 State of the County Address and it is available for viewing on Henry TV, the government access cable channel. In her address, Wood focuses on Henry County’s future endeavors regarding transportation infrastructure, economic development and quality of life initiatives. She spoke on efforts to address traffic and transportation issues as well as road infrastructure concerns, particularly in light of the
Atlanta Region Commission’s expected projection of population growth through 2040. Henry County’s State of the County airs three time a day at 6:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Spectrum’s channel 180 and on AT&T U-Verse’s channel 99. Cotton Fields Golf Club to Host Masters “Guess the Winner” Contest It’s time to dust off those golf clubs that have been stowed in the closet all winter because Cotton Fields Golf Club will be hosting a Masters “Guess the Winner” contest. The Masters has started and will run through April 8, and if you buy a round of golf you get an entry into Cotton Fields’ “Guess the Winner” contest. For each round of golf purchased from Monday, April 2 through Saturday, April 7, the golfer can enter their receipt into a drawing for four free rounds of golf at Cotton Fields Golf Club. Commissioner Dee Clemmons honored as Commissioner of the Year by the GMBA
Henry County District II Commissioner Dee Clemmons was named Commissioner of the Year by the Georgia Minority Business Awards at the 21st annual 2018 Georgia Minority Business Awards Dinner and Reception held on March 29, 2018 at the Georgia International Conference and Convention center in College Park. Clemmons was noted for her community service and activism on behalf of Henry County and for her many accomplishments during her first year in office. Some of the initiatives detailed in her nomination include her efforts to highlight equal economic opportunities and diversity in working with the Georgia Minority Supplier Diversity Council to create a local policy, ultimately helping pass Henry County’s first Supplier Inclusion Program to benefit small, local, women-owned and veteran-owned businesses. She was also lauded for her work to rebrand the Highway 19/41 Corridor and the county-owned Henry County Airport, benefitting
both with a Tax Allocation District and Megasite District to help promote economic development on the south side of Atlanta. She was presented with her award by Gerald McDowell, Executive Director of Aerotropolis Atlanta CIDs and was among a select group of award winners who are leaders in business, industry, education and the non-profit sectors. The GMBA Commissioner of the Year Award is presented to a political officer who actively supports and is responsible for his or her county’s community welfare while creating new business opportunities and initiatives within the county and community. The Georgia Minority Business Awards mission is to develop relationships that reach out to all cultures by hosting and rewarding Georgia’s top business, civic and organization leaders who have promoted and demonstrated diversity in the workplace.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners recognized April as Fair Housing Month with a proclamation at the April 3 Commission meeting. The Fair Housing Act is a national policy prohibiting discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability and familial status. The Fair Housing Proclamation read in part, “WHEREAS, We come together as a community and a nation to celebrate the anniversary of the passing
of the Fair Housing Act and recommit to that goal which inspired the nation in the aftermath of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination to eliminate housing discrimination and create equal opportunity in every community; and Illegal barriers to fair housing opportunities, no matter how subtle, diminish the rights of all…” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.
Connecting Henry and CISGA to Host 6th Annual Golf Tournament Connecting Henry and Communities in Schools of Georgia (CISGA) in Henry County are hosting the 6th annual Golf Tournament, scheduled to take place on Friday, April 27 with tee time starting at 9 a.m. at Georgia National Country Club in McDonough. The golf tournament entry cost is $300 per team and includes first and second place winner, longest drive and closest to pin prizes and lunch. The registration deadline is April 20. Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit Henry County Communities in Schools and Connecting henrycounty-ga.org
Henry, both 501 c (3) organizations. Communities in Schools works within the public school system providing necessary resources for students to succeed both in and out of the classroom. April 6, 2018 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 8-14 The Henry County Board of Commissioners recognized National Crime Victims’ Rights Week with a proclamation at the April 3 Commission meeting. The proclamation reaffirmed Henry County’s commitment to creating a victim service and criminal justice response that assists all victims of crime throughout the year. The proclamation read in part, “WHEREAS, The Henry County District Attorney, the Henry County Solicitor-General, and their offices, as well as law
enforcement agencies in Henry County, are hereby dedicated to strengthening victims and survivors in the aftermath of crime, building resilience in our communities and our victim responders, and working for justice for all victims and survivors…” Henry County District Attorney Darius Pattillo and Solicitor-General Pam Bettis, along with members of their departments, were in attendance to receive the proclamation.
Henry County Animal Care and Control Gives Update to Board Gerri Yoder, Director of Animal Care and Control gave an annual update to the Henry County Board of Commissioners at the April 3 Commission meeting. In her update, Yoder detailed the activities and responsibilities of the department and presented department statistics. Yoder said that the department handled approximately 5,200 calls for animal control services, issued 1,149 warnings and gave out 215 citations for violation of ordinance in 2017. She also reported that the department submitted 21 specimens for rabies testing, and of the 21, six tested positive and all six cases were from native wildlife. henrycounty-ga.org
Yoder also said the animal shelter housed approximately 2,900 animals including dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats and pigs, as well as chickens, ducks, geese turkeys, reptiles, exotic birds, hamsters, rabbits and gerbils. She noted that in 2017, there were 422 adoptions; 540 pets were reclaimed by their owners; and 782 pets were transferred to licensed rescue organizations. Henry County Animal Care and Control has many wonderful pets available for adoption. Burn Foundation’s 29th Annual Boot Drive is Gearing Up The 29th annual “Give Burns The Boot” drive, benefiting the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, will be in full swing beginning Friday, April 13 2018. The drive will be held for three consecutive Fridays including April 20 and ending April 27, 2018. The Henry County Fire Department is one of nearly 100 fire departments statewide joining forces to support the Burn Foundation, whose mission is to partner with the fire service and burn care community to provide fire safety and prevention education, support medical facilities and assist burn survivors in their recovery. Chairing this project for the Henry County Fire Department is Captain Michael Black. “Fires and burn injuries can strike anyone at
any time. The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation is working to help prevent firerelated injuries and deaths through education. In addition, the GFBF supports the burn centers in Georgia to allow them to offer the best possible treatment for the patients, said Black. A portion of the total funds raised is returned to the fire department to support local education and prevention efforts. The GFBF recognizes the hard work done on their behalf and in an effort to thank and honor the firefighters, started an incentive program. Ten percent of each department’s total dollar amount raised is returned to the department for fire safety and burn education efforts. By supporting the Boot Drive, the public is also supporting their local fire department and their own community.
BOC Approves Grant for HCPD The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution accepting a grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for the Violence Against Women project for the Henry County Police Department. The action came at the April 3 Commission meeting. The police department has been awarded $70,000 in federal funding for the Violence Against Women project which will aid in a collaborative effort between the HCPD, prosecutors, judges, and victim advocates to enhance the safety of women victims of violent crimes.
The project will include training law enforcement officers and judges to more effectively identify and respond to violent crimes against women, including sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and dating violence. The grant requires a local funding match of $23,333 which is available in the police department’s budget.
