HCPD Recognizes 25 Years of Service to the Community

Officers who have served 25 years with the HCPD include Officer George Padgett, Officer Joe Hencely, Major Mac Nale, Sergeant James Peaden, Major Robbie Savage, Officer Roger Pike, Detective Tom Stott, Chief Keith Nichols, and Sergeant Roger Stubbs.

The Henry County Police Department celebrated its 25th anniversary with a barbecue lunch held on June 10 at the Public Safety Complex in McDonough. During the luncheon, Police Chief Keith Nichols handed out certificates of appreciation for 25 years of service, to several officers who have been with the department since its inception. He also thanked the officers and civilian staff for their dedication in making the department an outstanding public safety agency. “The Deputy Chief talked about leadership and leadership is important, but it’s also important to have good personnel, good employees and I want to thank everybody here,” said Nichols. “I appreciate all of the support and I appreciate all of the civilians, because without you we couldn’t do it. We’re a team.” The Henry County Police Department was officially established by the Board of Commissioners on January 8, 1991 and began actual policing duties on June 7 of that same year.

Stormwater Wetland Restoration Workshop is July 12-14 Henry County Stormwater Management is hosting a Wetland Restoration Workshop with wetlands expert Tom Biebighauser July 12 through 14 in McDonough. This hands-on restoration workshop is designed for individuals interested in learning how to use practical, low cost techniques for building attractive wetlands for managing stormwater. Attendees will discover how to select locations for building wetlands, test soil texture, choose appropriate construction techniques, work with heavy equipment operators and establish native flowering plants. Throughout the three-day workshop participants will help build two naturally appearing and functioning wetlands to manage stormwater and provide habitat for wildlife. They will also learn how to design and build wetlands for managing stormwater, improving wildlife and fish habitats and repairing poor functioning and unattractive ponds. The primary instructor, Tom Biebighauser, is a wetlands expert who has restored over 1,800 wetlands in 22 states, Canada and New Zealand. He’s written four books about building wetlands and he teaches practical wetland restoration workshops around the world. Registration for this workshop is $125, which is non-refundable, but does include a copy of Wetland Restoration and Construction- A Technical Guide by Biebighauser and lunch for each day of the workshop. Fire Department Offers Summer Time Safety Classes The Henry County Fire Department is offering free safety classes during the summer months. A new program titled 101 Days of Summer Safety was developed by the departments Fire and Life Safety Educators, to remind citizens to stay safe while having fun in the sun. The program dates run from the 28th of May, Memorial Day weekend, until the 5th of September, Labor Day weekend. The program targets adolescences through senior adults and centers around eight summer related topics. Classes are being offered to all community groups, social and religious organizations, and homeowners associations throughout Henry County. The Henry County Fire Department participates in a variety of community activities and performs numerous public relations details throughout the year. Our mission is to take fire and life safety messages

to the citizens, and continue to develop education programs based on their individual community needs. Any organized group wishing to participate in the 101 Days of Summer Safety Program can contact the fire department’s Community Relations Division at 770288-6621 or 770-288-6619 for further information. Schedule your event with us and help keep your community safe this summer. All classes are open to the public. The 101 Days of Summer Safety Program will be available through the Henry County Library System on select dates during the month of July.
