Kathleen Bowen, Association of County Commissioners of Georgia’s (ACCG) Associate Legislative Director gave a presentation to the Henry County Board of Commissioners at the November 4 Commission meeting, recognizing several ACCG award recipients. Award recipients include Andy Welch who received the Legislative Service Award; the Henry County Rescue Task Force Initiative (Henry County Public Safety) that received the 2020 Georgia County of Excellence Award; and Jayden Williams who received the Youth Leadership Award. ACCG’s Leadership Development Director Jeff Christie also recognized District IV Commissioner Vivian Thomas, County Manager Cheri Hobson-Matthews and Deputy County Manager Brad Johnson for successfully completing the core requirements in the Lifelong Learning Academy Core Certification Program for County Officials. District III Commissioner Gary Barham was honored for successfully completing an advanced certification for the Public Safety Specialty Certificate in the Lifelong

BOC Awards Submissions for Small Business Restart and NonProfit Assistance Program The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to award 11 Henry County small businesses that have been adversely affected by COVID-19 with relief funding through the Restart Assistance Program. The action came at the November 4 Commission meeting. Grants Administrator Kimberly Monast gave the presentation and shared with Board members that approximately 20 percent of funding for Henry County small businesses and approximately 51 percent of

funding for the county’s non-profits has currently been awarded. The application period opened on August 19, 2020 and will continue until all funds are disbursed. If eligible, Henry County small businesses and non-profits are encouraged to apply for the Small Business Restart and Non-Profit program to receive assistance. November 10, 2020 Parks and Recreation Staff Receive Awards From State Agency

Parks and Recreation professionals were honored by the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association. Pictured (l. to r.) Chris Geiger, Cheryl Williams, Bryan Dixon, Peggy Hesselbach, and Jerry Belcastro, and Jonathon Penn.

Several Henry County Parks and Recreation staff were recognized at the November 4 BOC meeting for being honored by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association. The GRPA is the governing body for the state’s parks and recreation organizations. Leisure and Public Services Cluster Leader Jonathon Penn made the presentation and thanked staff for their outstanding contributions to the field of parks and recreation. This year the following staff and volunteer were honored by the GRPA: Jerry Belcastro won the Administration/

Leadership Network Distinguish Professional Award, Peggy Hesselbach won the Athletics/Aquatics Network Distinguish Professional Award, Bryan Dixon won the Parks Maintenance Operations Network Distinguish Professional Award, Cheryl Williams won the Recreation Programming Network Distinguish Professional Award and Chris Geiger won the Athletics/Aquatics Network Outstanding Volunteer Award. Commission Chair June Wood thanked those in attendance for their dedication to the county and the Parks and Recreation Department.

Board Approves Grants, Bid Awards and More The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved several resolutions at the November 4 Commission meeting. Items approved include: • District Attorney resolutions—accepted the continuation of allocated Victims of Crime Act subgrant funds for the existing Victim Advocate position for the 2020-2021 federal fiscal year; and accepted the continuation of allocated Victims of Crime Act subgrant funds for the existing Victim Compensation Advocate position for the 20202021 federal fiscal year. • Stormwater resolution—awarded Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Inc. for the design of the wetland and/ or stream restoration at Butler’s Bridge Road in the amount of $159,000. • Henry County Police Department resolution— approved the purchase of a Leica RTC360 Laser Scanner Kit for the Crime Scene and Traffic Units in the amount of $98,090. Funds will be allocated through the Capital Improvement Plan. • Technology Services—approved the purchase of new Meraki wireless access points from Byteworks in the amount of $76,755 using State Contract funds. • SPLOST V resolutions—awarded engineering design services for the following road projects: • Sandy Ridge Road (Keys Ferry to Stallworth) located in District I in the amount of $94,430 to Falcon Design Consultants, LLC. • Ellistown Road (Peeksville Road to Moccasin Gap) located in District I in the amount of $109,517 to Croy Engineering, LLC. • Flippen Road Extension located in District II in the amount of $284,650 to Heath & Lineback Engineers, LLC. • Fleet Services resolutions—approved the purchase of 50 vehicles for several departments.

The departments receiving vehicles are as follows: • Six Ford F-250s for Animal Care and Control from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $272,322 using Capital Funds. • Six F-350s and six F-150s for Department of Transportation (DOT), Stormwater and SPLOST for replacement trucks from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $355,729 using SPLOST and Capital Funds. • Twelve Ford Escapes for DOT, Animal Control, Technology Services, Risk Management, Community Development Block Grant, Airport, Parks and Recreation, Senior Services and Extension Services for replacement vehicles from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $261,814 using Capital Funds. • Six Ford Explorers for the Solicitor’s Office and Sentence Enforcement for replacement vehicles from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $161,444 using SPLOST and Capital Funds. • Seven Ford Vans for Senior Services Meals on Wheels program from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $150,465 using Capital Funds. • Two Ford Expeditions for Economic Development Division and Coroner from Allan Vigil Ford in the amount of $74,021 using Capital Funds. • Two Chevrolet 3500 Express Passenger Vans for Stormwater replacement vehicles from Griffin Chevrolet in Sylvester GA in the amount of $54,896 using Stormwater Funds. • Two Ford F-550s from State Contract Holder Wade Ford in the amount of $245,922 using Capital Funds. • One 2020 John Deere Wheel Loader from Sourcewell Contract Holder Flint Equipment Company in the amount of $153,800 using Continued on page 7

Virtual Veterans Day Ceremony to be Held on November 11

Pictured from last year’s ceremony, due to the coronavirus and social distancing requirements, this year’s Veterans Day service was prerecorded and will be aired on Henry TV and Facebook.

In honor of the Veterans Day holiday, a virtual Veterans Day Service will be held on Wednesday, November 11 airing on Spectrum/Charter channel 180 and the Henry County Facebook page beginning at 11 a.m. This year’s keynote speaker is Frederic Wilcox, SGM US Army Retired. Wilcox retired from the United States Army as a Sergeant Major after proudly serving over 28 years throughout the states and abroad. This pre-recorded Veterans Day Ceremony includes opening and closing remarks by Eduardo Bryant, American Legion Post 516 and bagpipe musician David Gregory will play “Going Home” and

“Amazing Grace.” Trish Colpetzer, City of McDonough Public Information Director will recite the Pledge of Allegiance and Chaplain Charles Jackson, LTC, U.S. Army (Retired) will provide the invocation and benediction. Senora G. Lee, Detroit PD (Retired) will sing the National Anthem and God Bless America. Andrew Hall, CSM US Army (Retired) American Legion Post 516 will introduce the keynote speaker and Jim Houston, with Bugles Across America, will close the service with Taps.
