Commissioner Brings Holiday Joy to Residents in Need

District II Commissioner Dee Clemmons brought some Christmas joy to the residents of Haven House this week by delivering much-needed gift cards to the women and children who will be calling the shelter home for the holiday season. Clemmons visited the shelter with director Marjorie Lacy for a tour and to learn more about the work being done on behalf of domestic violence victims.

Lacy said that the shelter is nearly at capacity, and residents typically stay for 30 days before transitioning into more permanent housing. Clemmons collected the gift cards through her small business and other area businesses in an effort to help alleviate some of the financial hardships that many women who come to Haven House face. Haven House is a domestic violence shelter and program serving victims of family violence in Henry, Jasper, Butts and Lamar Counties. Monetary donations and donations of items are gladly accepted. Monetary donations may be made through the shelter’s website or mailed to P.O. Box 1150, McDonough, GA 30253. Residents are in need of new socks and underwear, as well as gently used clothing, housewares and furniture items. Donations may be dropped off at Blessings Thrift Store, located at 86 Workcamp Rd. in McDonough. For more information on how to help, please call 770-954-1008 or visit www.henryhavenhouse.org.

HCPD Announces 2016-2017 HEAT Grant Award The Henry County Police Department is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety by continuing to accept grant funding as part of the Metro-Atlanta MultiJurisdictional DUI Task Force. The Officers involved in this project are Sergeant Scott Cumbie, veteran HEAT (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic) officers Jason Jones, Kelly Horne, and new HEAT officer Kenneth Palmer. The grant from the GOHS funds 40 percent of the salaries for one officer and the sergeant, and Henry County is responsible for 60 percent of their pay as well as 100 percent of two additional in-kind officers. Henry County is eligible for this grant each

year based on fully compliant previous administration of prior years, and specifically in order to combat continued issues with serious injuries and fatalities on county roadways. The purpose of the HEAT unit is to enforce D.U.I., Speeding and Aggressive Driving laws and to educate the importance of Occupant Safety (Seat belts and Child Restraints) to the citizens and visitors of Henry County. By maintaining this valuable program, the Henry County Police Department hopes to encourage continued support of the citizens in the HEAT Officers’ pursuit of safer roadways. Should you need additional information regarding this grant, please contact Sgt. Scott Cumbie, at 770-288-8293 or Kimberly Monast at 770-288-8133.
