Aesthetic Crowns in Paediatric Dentistry Presented by Associate Professor James Lucas CPD HOURS 5.5 - Lecture: 1.5 Workshop: 4 ADELAIDE DATE:

Wednesday, 13 April 2016

LOCATION:

School of Dentistry University of Adelaide North Terrace Campus SA 5005

COST:

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The use of aesthetic crowns is a relatively new technology available to paediatric dentistry for the restoration and rehabilitation of the primary dentition. This is a hands-on workshop which covers case studies, and the principals and techniques for sizing, preparation, fitting and cementation of NuSmile Signature (pre-veneered) and NuSmile ZR (zirconia) crowns. Clinical recommendations including case selection will be reviewed as well as practical tips to overcome common problems will be outlined. Controversial issues around cementation, wear and durability will be discussed as well as the emerging evidence.

At the completion of this workshop, the clinician will understand and demonstrate competence in all phases of case selection, tooth preparation, proper fitting and cementation of both pre-veneered and zirconia ceramic anterior and posterior primary crowns. Clinicians will be in a better position to decide which type of aesthetic restoration is best suited to their individual patient’s needs and should feel confident to offer parents and children a new aesthetic option for full coverage restorations for anterior or posterior teeth.

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Fibre Reinforced Composite Resin Bridges Presented by Professor Ian Meyers CPD HOURS 3 The introduction of resin impregnated glass fibre reinforcing materials has made the construction and bonding of direct fibre-reinforced composite resin bridges much easier and more predictable than previous reinforcing materials. These newer materials combine simplicity of use, good aesthetics, high fracture toughness, and a minimally invasive treatment approach, thereby providing the clinician with viable treatment options for patients with missing teeth. The most significant advantages for patients relate to cost effectiveness, conservation of tooth structure and reduced treatment time in comparison with other complex restorative procedures. Fibre-reinforced bridges can be very successful in replacing missing anterior or posterior teeth, either as a short term solution or for longer term aesthetics and function. Bridges can be constructed directly in the mouth, fabricated chair-side or pre-made in the laboratory providing great flexibility in techniques available. This course will provide clinical information and a ‘hands-on’ experience with resin impregnated fibre reinforcing materials combined with a range of aesthetic and high strength composite resins. Techniques for creating aesthetic anterior and fully functional posterior fibre reinforced bridges will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will be able to experience using the various fibre reinforced materials and will undertake construction of direct and semi-direct bridges. Materials handling and clinical hints and tips will be highlighted to assist in ensuring successful patient outcomes.

Managing the Worn Dentition – More than Restoration Presented by Professor Ian Meyers CPD HOURS 6.5 SYDNEY DATE:

Thursday, 19 May 2016

TIME:

8:30am - 5:00pm

LOCATION:

What strategies are required as patients and their restored dentitions age? Restoration of an extensively worn or badly broken down dentition can be complex, costly and time consuming to implement. Because of its complexity and cost, this treatment is often delayed until it becomes essential. Dentists (and patients!) want to stop the repeat restoration cycle and its ongoing costly restorative burden. So how do we treat the patient with a severely broken down dentition?

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Through lectures, clinical demonstrations and participation exercises, Professor Meyers will present four steps to restorative success:

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Restoration & Preservation of the Compromised Tooth Presented by Professor Ian Meyers CPD HOURS 3.5 Minimally invasive management of cracked, fractured and fragile teeth Over the patient’s lifetime their dentition is subject to a range of destructive forces which may decrease the longevity of individual teeth and ultimately the entire dentition. Caries, tooth wear, cracks, fractures, and previous restorative treatments can all result in severely compromised teeth with limited, and often weakened, remaining tooth structure. While complex restorative options involving fixed prosthodontics will provide suitable solutions in many cases, they may in some circumstances further weaken the tooth by removing sound tooth structure. There are situations when more conservative and less costly alternatives need to be considered for patients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: •

Restoration of the large posterior restoration

Interproximal contacts and functional anatomical form

Open and closed sandwich restorations

Management options for cracked cusps/teeth

Cusp and tooth reinforcement techniques

Internal and external tooth bracing

Fibre reinforced restorations

Direct and semi-direct restorative options

Prevention of catastrophic failure

Conservative restoration as a precursor to complex restoration

This lecture and hands-on workshop will look at a range of clinical situations involving weakened and functionally fatigued teeth and discuss the conservative restorative management of these teeth to preserve the remaining tooth structure and maintain the patient’s dentition.

How Can We Regain Oral Balance & Protect Teeth in Challenging Oral Environments?

GENERAL DENTISTRY

Presented by Dr Alexandra Sbaraini CPD HOURS 1.5 Older adults are keeping their natural teeth for longer. The retention of a natural dentition improves adults’ quality of life as it allows for ongoing chewing and speech functions, as well as an improved aesthetic appearance. However, keeping teeth for longer is also associated with an increased risk of developing oral diseases. For instance, advanced patient age, reduced salivary flow (often as a side effect of prescription medications) and reduced capability to perform effective mechanical oral hygiene, when combined, result into a challenging (acidic) oral environment. In those situations, how can you help patients to regain oral balance and to protect their teeth? There are different things that can be suggested to patients in order to re-establish the balance within their mouths, such as, making lifestyle changes, increasing fluoride exposure and improving oral hygiene. This presentation will focus on clinical strategies (and products) that can be used to (1) re-establish the balance within an oral environment and (2) provide enhanced protection for vulnerable tooth surfaces. By adopting minimal-invasive strategies and proven technologies, dental professionals will be able to manage challenging oral environments, regain oral balance and protect tooth surfaces.

1. Build a “Best practice” reputation:

(3:00pm to 6:30pm) Dr John Molinari

A major goal of this presentation is to help dental professionals increase their understanding of the “why” as well as the “what” of infection control practices. Evidence-based information will be used to address certain issues where perceptions and misuse of infection control procedures and products are in conflict with scientific and clinical knowledge. Recent updates and accumulated data regarding health care risks, vaccinations and preventive measures will serve as frameworks for this presentation. At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

Understand the routine application of infection control practices based on accumulated science-and clinical-based evidence

Understand major global and epidemiological factors which can lead to emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases
