Chadasha 2015 Year End Report

The Chadasha Foundation is an international non-profit that provides spiritual and physical healing to the poorest of poor in Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the name of Jesus. The Foundation includes children’s ministry, medical missions, Biblical education, a pediatric heart program, support to churches, and many other ministries in both countries. In early 2000, Dr. Clint Doiron came to Haiti and the Dominican Republic on a medical mission trip and met Dr. Marc Pinard. Pinard took Doiron from village to village, introducing him to individuals in need of his medical expertise. Doiron saw first hand the devastation, turmoil, and lack of basic medical essentials. He was heartbroken and wanted to help. Out of this first trip, Chadasha was born. Later, Chadasha was able to acquire a tract of land — a goat field — in Jimaní with the help of other individuals. It was here that Chadasha started building the medical clinic, the foundation for Chadasha. Then disaster struck. Haiti was hit by three hurricanes and one tropical storm in 2008. Then Haiti suffered from the earthquake of 2010. Thousands flooded

“And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.’”

the medical clinic in search of help, shelter, and guidance. Volunteers and workers stepped up to serve a few thousand of the 1.5 million homeless and injured. Since then, Chadasha (with help from locals) has turned the hospital into a safe haven for Haitians and Dominicans alike. The Chadasha foundation was born amidst chaos to care for the most poor and vulnerable. Since then, the Chadasha Foundation has grown. In addition to the clinic, Chadasha now supports an orphanage, a discipleship program, a school, pediatric heart surgery, a nutrition program, an English language program, an orphan retreat center, multiple churches, and Batey 41, formerly a slave camp.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. “

Heartbeat of Haiti has performed $90,448,000 worth of U.S. pediatric heart surgeries with an investment of $1.4 million dollars. The cost of a U.S. pediatric surgery is $226,120, while Heartbeat is performing each surgery at a cost of about $5,000.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. With a population of approximately 10.48 million people, 80% live in extreme poverty . There are 290,000 babies born each year, and it is estimated that 1,200 of these children are born with a cogenital heart defect that requires surgery. Children born with heart defects in Haiti are either sent to the United States for help, live for a few years with their defects, or die shortly after birth. Most newborns with serious heart disease unfortunately die at home. Several charitable organizations exist to help with basic healthcare; however, very few provide cardiac care for children in the country. By partnering with Gift of Life and the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF), two non-profit US medical charities committed to serving the children of the world with heart disease, Chadasha provides life-saving surgery as well as education to local healthcare providers. During 2015, Heartbeat of Haiti performed approximately 80 surgeries and plans to perform at least 80 surgeries in 2016. 36 of the surgeries for 2016 have already been funded.

Maiah was eight-months-old at the time of her operation. She had developed severe pulmonary hypertension due to an excessive amount of blood flowing into her lungs. Although Maiah’s defect could not be fully repaired during this trip, a pulmonary artery banding was put in place to restrict blood flow. This procedure, along with medication, should allow the pulmonary hypertension to improve. When the time is right, she will undergo surgery again to repair her heart completely.

Marc suffered from a severe form of Tetralogy of Fallot that caused him to have frequent spells where he would become severely blue from the lack of oxygen, sometimes causing him to pass out. Marc received surgery and recovered beautifully. He loved having the team’s attention, and they loved giving it to him. Marc’s father was very happy and took pictures of the team. They were the answer to his prayer.

Chrislove had her first echocardiogram in 2001 and was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation secondary to rheumatic fever. In October, Chrislove showed up at a hospital with severe heart failure. An echocardiogram confirmed she needed surgery as soon as possible. She had a very long surgery. Her heart was very weak and struggled to pump effectively on its own after bypass, but the surgeons were able to replace her diseased valve with a new one. After time in the ICU and another operation to have her sternum closed, her breathing tube was removed, and she began to talk and move around the next day. She will need to take long term medications while her ventricles strengthen, but the staff is hopeful for her future with her new valve.

Erick is five-years-old and was born with an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Pulmonary Stenosis. He also has Noonan’s Syndrome, which is commonly associated with heart defects. His surgery to close his ASD and enlarge the opening of his pulmonary artery went well. He suffered from a complication that is not common in children with Noonan’s Syndrome. He had to be without any food or drink for 7 days because of his reaction to the surgery. The team of volunteers worked hard to keep him entertained by playing with him, coloring with him, and just giving him a hug when he needed it.

The heart program has been invited to explore a new opportunity. Haiti’s Minister of Health is offering to give access to a hospital located in Port-Au-Prince. The facility is on one level. It is at least five times the size of the Jimaní hospital. It is located on a paved road, and comes with a large guest house completed with 13 bungalows under construction. Renovations are still in progress on the hospital, which means Chadasha will receive a new facility. The only cost to Heartbeat of Haiti will be the operational costs. The project would be a tremendous responsibility, that would enhance Heartbeat of Haiti’s ability to save lives, influence Haitian healthcare, shine the light of Christ, and push back against the chaos of Haiti.

Discipleship Classes English Classes Little Hands and Feet

The English class was established with a vision to spread the Gospel through teaching English in Haiti. Currently, there are 11 classes held weekly, and the team is hoping to expand to 15 classes in the coming year. The Port-Au-Prince team sees

200 to 250 students a week in the English Classes.

• 4 Laptops - $1,000 • 4 Rosetta Stone English Programs- $800

Our hope through the English program is to help Haitians have more opportunities to be self-sufficient, create greater job opportunities, and provide for themselves by being able to communicate effectively online through email and other forms of communication, opening up more business opportunities.

SPONSOR A TEACHER FOR $50 A MONTH. The program would like to

add 4 more classes

because there is a growing need, and the class is an easy fit to get people to come on a weekly basis.

In 2013, John Fitts created a discipleship opportunity for leadership training. This program trains many English program graduates who expressed an interest in going deeper in their commitment to follow Jesus. The discipleship course is a one-year course that covers The Timothy Initiative (TTIOnline.org) material, which gives an overview of the Bible with a focus on making disciples. The inaugural class had 13. This year’s class grew to 17 disciples.

The goal for this rigorous class is that each student will disciple another person or a group of people. The students will go and share the gospel in their communities. Some of the students will become teachers in Chadasha’s English program, and some will help lead another discipleship class.

English teachers have been or are currently students from the Discipleship class.

Each class costs: $550 for materials $2000 for food and transportation.

SPONSOR A year of DISCIPLESHIP CLASSes FOR $2550.

Little Hands and Feet serves as a refuge for the children who need a safe, healthy environment to live and grow until their parents are able to care for them again or until they are adopted. There are 11 children being served. The children are overseen First Baptist Pernier Church, which is overseen by Pastor Jude Roseau. Education is provided at a local private school.

The Montrouis Retreat Center has accomplished multiple construction projects this year. In 2015, the team was able to complete a shower building, build and furnish a kitchen and dining area, build a utility building, install a de-salination water plant, install electrical connections to the public power grid, build 1,200 square foot chapel, build an 850 gallon water tower, and replace the roof and screen in the porch of the guardian house. While buildings and kitchens do not change lives, they are tools that allow bellies to be filled and respite from the sun rays. The team is excited to have received the funding for the first of eight dorms to be built. With the enhanced programs and spaces to accommodate programming, the focused discipleship opportunities are more realistic. Between family and teams, the Rideouts have been able to accomplish more this camp season than they have in the 4 years they have lived in Montrouis.

• Complete team dorms - 9 Dorms x $10,000 • Repair the sea wall - $17,500 • Construction of the swimming pool - $50,000

Education and food program

A batey, or “work camp,” is a shanty-town camp where sugarcane cutters live. In the early 1900s, Haitian sugarcane cutters, lured by the promise of work, began the seasonal migration to the Dominican Republic. Over the decades, many of these sugarcane workers did not return to Haiti at season end and thus created a large, permanent population of Haitians in the Dominican Republic — a population that was not welcomed. The Haitians were not allowed to leave the bateyes, under the threat of deportation, except to work in the fields. Most of the 400+ bateyes in the Domincan Republic have not changed much since they were originally erected. They still have no running water, no electricity, no cooling facilities, no bathrooms, no schools for the children, and no medical facilities. Primitive dirt roads carved through everencroaching jungles become muddy lakes when it rains, cutting off entire bateyes from the outside world for days at a time. The shanty homes consist of slatted wood walls, tarps, tin roofs, dirt floors and often house up to eight or more people. Fortunately, the Chadasha Foundation has been able to provide hope for one batey, Batey 41. Chadasha began serving the Batey 41 residents in 2011. Now it has access to medical care, a school building, teachers, books, school uniforms, clean drinking water, food and a church. The school has educated 340 people over four years, and the current enrollment is 120 students. The students learn Spanish, English and French in addition to their native Haitian Creole. The food program provides lunch each day to the 120 students.

This program feeds about 120 children 5 meals a w eek.

A WEEK OF MEALS is or

• Build shelves for the students to keep their books - $125 • Build more benches for the school - $125

Chadasha longs to see more of God’s church invested in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. One of Chadasha’s church partners, New Vision Baptist Church of Murfreesboro, TN, responded to God’s call to care for the residents of Batey 41. As a result of that partnership, Chadasha was able to provide food, clean water, medical care, teachers, text books, and school uniforms for over 120 children.

CLINIC: MEDICAL CARE GUEST HOUSING NEW PROPOSED PROGRAMS

Jimani is now under the leadership of Dr. Yirdana Corporán Perez de Pujols and her husband Elias. In 2007, while Dr. Corporán was completing her residency, Chadasha asked her to move to Jimaní and oversee the clinic. Together Yirdana and Elias are a wonderful team. They are both committed Christians who long to serve their neighbors in Jiamní. Yirdana has faithfully overseen the clinic for nine years. Now, Chadasha plans to expand Yirdana’s role. She, along with Elias, envisions using Chadasha’s facilities to train families how to locate and prepare nutritional foods, provide theological and biblical training to area pastors, offer sports camps to young people and provide English language training. Chadasha is blessed to have such faithful, passionate, Dominican leaders in Jimaní through the people of Jimaní. The clinic continues to grow and now offers the following services: • • • • • •

General medicine consulting Ophthamology Dentistry A laboratory Eye surgery Education for the community

• Receive a second level certification from the Minister of Health to provide more services • Provide ear, nose and tonsil surgeries with Dominican doctors • Acquire new lab equipment • Continue work with the Diabetic Club program • Start the infant immunization program • Form a group of promoters for the hospital

Under Yirdana’s and Elias’ leadership, the Jimaní facilities have undergone extensive renovations and repairs. The Guest House and Clinic have been repainted. Plumbing has bee repaired. Plaster has been patched. New batteries were installed to ensure more reliable power. Elias has begun planting lemon and mango trees on the property. Signs of new life truly abound in Jimaní. The Guest House hosts multiple mission teams every year. Some work on the facilities. Others get involved with Batey 41 and the surrounding community. Many serve as medical mission teams. Up to 80 guests can stay on-site. Rooms vary in size and can accommodate as few as two people and as many as 16. Complete with a large kitchn, Yinabel Corporán and her staff are fully equipped to feed large teams. Chadasha’s goal is to provide a place of rest and nourishment in order to equip teams for the work God has called them to do in Jimaní. Moreover, given Yinabel’s skill as a cook and her training in hospitality management, guests will get a taste of Dominican cuisine and culture.

Along with the updates to the facilities Yiradana and Elias would like to start a Nutrition Program and Language School. The Nutritional Program would take place in two phases. Phase 1 would consist of identifying lowincome families who suffer from malnutrition. The families would move to the Chadasha’s facilities for three months for nutrition, hygiene education, and job training. In Phase 2 families will return to their houses, receive raw foods, and will be visited regularly by health promoters. Chadasha will ensure participants are employed when they complete the program so they are equipped to implement their new skills. THE PLAN IS TO SERVE

10 FAMILIES INITIALLY. OUR GOAL IS TO

ULTIMATELY SERVE 70 TO 80 FAMILIES. The Language School will focus on 150 students chosen from low-income families and will teach English, Spanish, and French. The program will start with English. These languages will create opportunities for students who successfully finish the program.

Matt and Sarah Rideout have been involved as missions for several years and have been with Chadasha since November of 2011. Originally from Tennessee, they currently live in Montrouis where they are organizing and managing the Orphan Retreat center with their two daughters, Olive (2) and Willow (4). They have completed multiple projects with the help of multiple groups and family that have increased their ability to serve the children of Montrouis.

John Fitts has been involved in missions for several years, and has been with Chadasha since March of 2009. Originally from Virginia, he currently resides in Port-Au-Prince. Fitts heads the Discipleship and English programs across Port-Au-Prince. This is the second year for the Discipleship Program and he currently has 11 English classes being held.

Josué Lamey was born in Port-Au-Prince. He gave his life to Christ in 2007 and has since given himself to the ministry. In September 2011, Chadasha asked Josué to be a translator. Lamey started working with John Fitts and within a few months he started teaching English classes and Bible study. In 2014, John and Josué started a disciple class. This class has been instrumental in the lives of young Haitians. Now, Josué works with John as a manager, translator, and handles logistics for teams. He also assists John overseeing the finances.

Yirdana Corporán, a native of Santo Domingo, made the decision to give her life to Jesus Christ at the young age of seventeen. At nineteen, she confirmed that covenant to serve Jesus forever. Thanks to God, in 2004 she received the title of Doctor in Medicine from Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo. Yirdana was asked to work with a team in Jimaní shortly there after, and she immediately accepted. Elias is a hardworking, Christian of high integrity. He is dedicated to community service. Yirdana and Elias make a great team. Today they serve God through Chadasha, a ministry born out of the needs of Jimaní and the surrounding areas.

Dr. Clint Doiron is a cardiologist and the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Chadasha. Doiron, along with wife Kristine, has been actively involved for more than 13 years in mission work. He is a partner with East Tennessee Heart Consultants in Knoxville, TN. Doiron earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and completed his fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center. Before founding Chadasha in 2009 alongside other volunteers, Doiron became heavily involved in interventional cardiology in China, Egypt, Cuba and South America.

Patrick King works closely with the board members, missionaries, and donors to ensure communication within Chadasha is simple and most effective. He lives with his family in Knoxville, TN.

Compassion

is when you decide to enter into somebody else’s

suffering. It is so counterintuitive that you enter into someone’s suffering; it doesn’t make sense until you do it. Then when you realize and you invest yourself in another’s suffering, embedded in that suffering is

joy.”
