Welcome We’re Making Progress! I am excited to report that Senior Center members have elected 12 from their ranks to a newly created Members Council. Members now have a direct and assured means to communicate their needs and suggestions to myself and the board, and Marc Kane, Center Director it also gives the members a means to organize and help with volunteerism and fund raising. Members elected to the Council are listed on page 9. The formation of the Council is a critical step in the success of any future development here at the Center. We are now positioned to embrace a strategic planning process, and it is my hope to involve people from all over the community to provide critique of our services and to help us develop a vision for the future. This will involve exploring new collaborations with other organizations as well. This month we will study new ways to work with The Community Lounge located on the corner of the Ross Ragland building. We’ll be soliciting ideas from all over and from anyone willing to assist. We would like to know if the public wishes to see us expand our service offerings to this downtown location. Note the Lounge picture on page 10 and the invitation for your comments. Speaking of collaborating, the shelves and other fixtures are now in place for the new County Branch Library soon to open within the Senior Center. I expect you will able to begin using this service later this month. This publication is delivered to nearly sixteen thousand households or businesses. Our invitation to participate in our vision goes out to all of you. Even if you don’t ever expect to use the services of the Senior Center we would like your comments. What should the role of the Center be in our community? What services would be most critical? These are just two of many important questions of which we would like to have your opinion. Our volunteer banquet was well attended in July as we acknowledged the contribution of nearly 29000 volunteer hours during

the last year saving the Center an estimated $300,000. All very much appreciated by the whole community I am sure. We continue to seek donations and additional volunteers. Please note new requests for help in the volunteer section. Numerous remarks of encouragement and kudos for good work have been received over the past month as our progress has been noticed. There is nothing more powerful than the encouragement of others. There have however been one or two naysayers. So my thanks to the Herald and News this week for the opportunity to respond to and correct the misperceptions in a particularly negative letter to the editor. You won’t find those letters in this insert but in the newspaper itself. I am pleased to report that the membership voted an increase in dues effective January 1, 2013. They increased to $10 per year, still far less than a dollar a month. It’s been more than a decade, maybe two, since dues were increased. This will be a boost to the center’s support. Join Us! We Celebrate Life! Marc Kane Executive Director

Exercise!

What is a sister?

By Audrey E. Davis

by Audrey E. Davis

I pinched an inch and decided it was time, To join the club and exercise! So I bought a jump rope and felt like a dope, As I threw it over my head at the skies!

One who can see your faults, and looks beyond them, And loves you regardless of your ways. One who shares your dreams and never thinks they are silly. She’s a friend and helper every day.

I counted to ten - started to grin, I was better than I thought I could be. I counted to twenty - twenty five and thirty I could just see the pounds fall off me!

She walks the first mile with you, and will even go another. She holds your hand when you’re ill. Coffee time is “fine time” when old times are remembered, And the empty place in your heart she can fill.

But I got tangled up, with the rope around my knees. I tried very hard to get undone. Now what do I do now, with both knees caught? This sure wasn’t very much fun!

She hurts when you hurt, and cries when you do, And she shares the laughter when hearts are full. She’s fun, and loves to tease a bit, And the visits are never dull!

But I was tired anyway, and had to stop. My breath was giving out you see, And I decided to let others exercise and jump rope, Even if there is a whole lot left of me!

Time may change the face, And wrinkles may appear, But a sister’s love never changes And she always cares!

Toast To Friendship by Fred Dean

Poems have been written about About the power of love About flowers and tries And the skies above About life and strife

And battles fought to the end But not enough can be said About the warmth and comfort Of a tried and true friend

How You Can Receive The True God By Charlette Mosley

The Lord is here beside me, each and everyday. He’s the one who takes my hand, and guides just the right way.

The Lord tells me in His Holy word, that I must come to Him through His Holy son. So I know by the faith that is in my life, when I did that with my heart my new life had just begun.

When I give my life to Him each morning, and do it by the holy trinity. I know that with my true faith in them, I will, after judgment day, be taken to eternity.

So I simply share the wisdom, that was given to me by the three in one. Please turn your life to love, charity, and faith, you can receive this and more by accepting God by the name of His Holy Son.

Volunteer News

Volunteer News

Greetings from KBSCC Volunteer Services

Projects in Development

To start this month’s news I would like to say some LONG OVERDUE “Thank You’s:

1. Increasing usage of the Community Lounge on Pine St. to accommodate the people on the northern side of town. Examples would be craft workshops and/or classes, book groups, etc. If you have a suggestion or idea, please feel free to forward it to me and we’ll work together to make it happen!

To SignVertise for the donation of the new Crafty LaDees Craft Shop sign that adorns the SW corner of the building near the entrance. It is beautiful and will weather way better than the old plywood sign it replaced. To Shasta Litho for printing the wrap strips so we could organize the fabric offerings we have in the Crafty LaDees Shop. If you haven’t visited the shop to see the unique craft items produced by our members-please feel free to stop by between 10 am and 3 pm daily. Other times available by appointment by contacting the gift shop.

I have spent my first month of Volunteer Coordinator reviewing all the applications and updating the file for the volunteers; however, I have found that some applications have taken a ‘ wrong turn’ and disappeared! So please be patient with me if I ask you to fill out a new one for the files. Another big “THANK YOU” goes out to the staff of KBSCC for the dinner they hosted to honor all our volunteers! Our volunteers last year contributed anywhere from 1 to 1687 hours to help fellow seniors of our community. Pam Coplen was honored as the volunteer with the most hours. Altogether 184 volunteers contributed 28,890 hours of service last year. That’s more than $300,000 in services contributed!

AUGUST WARM FUZZIES 1. S till needing a group or service club to stain the beams around the outside of the building; 2. W ould appreciate any help to refurbish (sand and paint) our 8 metal doors. Any auto body shops out there to help. Perfect project for you.

2. Development of mentor/partnerships with the community; such as a gardening group to include Master Gardeners, a youth group such as Girl Scouts

or 4H, and other interested adults & seniors in managing/increasing the garden spaces around the Center. 3. D evelopment of other partnerships with service clubs or mentoring groups with youth-focus with also be explored. Again, if you have a suggestion and/ or idea, please feel free to contact me at KBSCC. One Eagle Scout Candidate is exploring the idea of mentoring seniors and others in computer skills here at the Center.

How old do you have to be to be a Volunteer? Pictured above, Rose Fretwell, age 5, helps her grandmother in the gift shop. She received an award at the Annual Volunteer Banquet for being our youngest volunteer.

3. P ainting in the parking areas (we have the paint!)

6. Had a call 10 days ago to see if we have people willing to sit with a client for an afternoon so daughter could go to an event. These would be volunteer times. If interested, please contact us.

4. D rivers and runners for the Meals on Wheels always need drivers. Even if only 2 hours a week or whatever you can, we appreciate it!

If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by the center at 2045 Arthur St. for an application.

5. G eneral transportation drivers for local transportation and Translink needed.
