We passed what we hope is a balanced budget this year. I say “hope” because we are challenged to raise funds at a pace that can keep up with
the population growth of the senior population. Although we are heavily
funded by government sources, more than $700,000 this year, we are still
left with the task of raising nearly $500,000 to match or complement those funds in order meet the expense of our services.
In addition to local contributions the Center also raises funds from

Balance and Stability Class By Judith Jensen
REPORT FROM THE NEWEST FRONTIER: FASCIAL FITNESS
image: npr.org
Fascia is muscular connective tissue. Maybe you have heard of plantar fasciitis? Well, fascia exists not just in the foot but throughout the body. It is important for health, well-being, and mobility. It “transmits the power of the muscles, communicates with the nervous system, and protects internal organs.” (Robert Schleip). We can learn to soften our fascia to free our movement.
Here are the latest comments from students in Tina Mahacek’s new class on fascial fitness. • “You feel younger. • “Because I sense more, because I am more “sense-able”, I don’t have to pay such close attention to walking. I just live, don’t have to panic.” • “Becoming more me.” • “Not only do I move better, it helps my brain.” • “Motion more fluid.” • “For the first time in years, I can get off the floor.” • “I feel like I am unwinding previous trauma.” • “We do come because we have fun.” A final thought: If you brain works and you move well, how can you be old?

24 NEW VOLUNTEERS STEP UP IN AUGUST MEALS-ON-WHEELS ADDS ADDITIONAL ROUTE AND NEW RECIPIENTS Thanks to a very successful campaign to recruit new volunteers launched in July the senior center has processed 24 new volunteer applications, most of which (18) were for the MealsOn-Wheels Program. As a result the center is able to add a sixth Meals-On-Wheels route starting in September to the daily morning delivery. Each route includes about 30 home deliveries. We expect to add a seventh route as well in October that will reduce the number of deliveries for each driver and allow for more time to visit with each of the meal recipients. Six of the new volunteer applicants signed up for other duties to work in the kitchen, gift shop, bingo fundraisers and more. The success of the campaign is largely credited to extensive media coverage provided by the Herald and News, Wynne Broadcasting and KOTI television. In addition Senior Center board members participated in the recruitment effort as well. I have always believed in Klamath Falls as a community that takes care of its own and one with compassion and commitment to meet community needs whenever there is a real need. To meet the ever growing support requirements of a rapidly growing population of older adults we will need to continue to recruit new volunteers to maintain our senior center of which I am very proud and which I know the community has also taken a great sense of pride in as well. Incidentally the population of residents aged 60 and over in Klamath County has now reached 25.6 % of the overall population. Our County has one of the largest proportions of seniors. Why? Because it’s a great place to live, not only for its opportunities but because of the genuine sense of community that we all share and practice here. The senior center now sustains itself on the efforts of over 160 volunteers. Some come just once a month or once a week. Others come daily. Collectively they produce enough volunteer labor that would otherwise cost the center well over $300,000. That’s a huge contribution. There are volunteer opportunities at the senior center in many areas and for all ages. The need for more volunteers will always be here so applications are accepted all year long. Visit the center or call us at 541-883-7171 for an application.

A Blues Song
Sharon (Johnston) Pappas ©
By William Bandick
We got the dishwashing blues Slopping water and soap suds All over my shoes. My hands are clean. My arms are bare I’ve got soap suds splashed All over my hair Now my dishes are clean So are my hands and hair My feet would be too If they were bare. But my shoes are clean Even though they’re wet I’m so happy the dishes are clean So I don’t fret. So play your music and Sing this song If you laugh and be happy Nothing in life can go wrong.
It twinkled and sparkled Against the dark sky So close I could touch it If only I’d try I heard the quiet of the dawn And saw grass moist with dew Then suddenly through the silence A dove began to coo The air so still and warm Yet cool on my skin As I watched in awe A new day begin The mountain silhouette Began to glimmer in light While humming birds Danced and whirled in flight
The sky was aglow with an iridescent sunrise That took my breath away As God’s gift was unveiled once again I closed my eyes to pray.
In The Shade
By Sharon Hudson As I sit on a blanket Underneath the tree, I look off in the distance, And I feel so free. Free from the crowds Cities attract. I don’t miss them at All, and that’s a fact. There is a pretty flower That has the color of blue. Its tiny little peddles Are just brand new. The more I look around, The more I can see. I’m not alone. There is Life all around me! There are bees pollinating, and Butterflies adding color. Dragonflies are there, Even though they are duller. However, if you look closely The colors of the rainbow are there. The birds are many, singing there Songs as if they care. I love nature and I Think it loves me. I enjoy it so much, and There is so much to see!

However, there are many other special deadlines and second chances that you should know about. If you missed all other opportunities to sign up for Medicare, such as your birthday period (three months prior to your birthday month, your actual birthday month, and three months after your birthday month, Medicare also features the General Enrollment period during January, February, and March. (Are you confused enough yet?) However, your coverage will not begin until July 1. If you are enrolling in Part A and B during this period, you then can sign for Part D drug insurance from April 1 through June 30. Effective date of Part D insurance will also be July 1. After these periods are over, you will have to wait until the next general enrollment period. There’s yet another time frame at the beginning of the year to be aware of if you’re in an Advantage plan. You may switch out of your Advantage plan into regular Medicare from January 1 through February 14. You can add a “stand-alone” Part D drug plan during this same time period. Mention should be made of the special enrollment periods available when you lose other coverage you may have had. First, if you decide to retire and lose your Employer Group Health Plan (EGHP), you do have up to 8 months after active work ends to sign up for Medicare. (You also can sign up for Medicare while still participating in your EGHP and your EGHP will probably become your secondary insurance.) That depends on your employer’s policies, so you need to coordinate this with your employer. However - here’s where it gets confusing – you only have 60 days after EGHP ends to sign up for Part D drug insurance. So in effect, you should get all of it taken care of within the 60 day time period. During this 60 day period you can choose either regular Medicare or an Advantage plan. Finally, and this is very important, if you’re in regular Medicare and want to purchase a Medicare supplemental plan, you have six months after enrollment of “guaranteed issue “ Guaranteed issue” means that the supplemental insurance plan MUST sell you a policy during this initial six month period of signing up for Medicare.. After that they are free to turn you down because of pre-existing condition(s). This means, in effect, you may never be able to get a supplemental plan. That’s it for this month. And don’t forget - SHIBA counselors are available at the Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center. Just call 541-883-7171 and make an appointment.

Want Improved Brain Function? Exercise! Are any of you having periodic trouble with recall? I am. Yet, we cannot deny that brain function normally declines with age. There is hope though using brain-healthy behaviors, including exercise that can help forestall decline. A recent report in Medical News Today (https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/ articles/321981.php), in part, supports this. Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School Of Medicine in Florida performed a meta-analysis of existing studies related to the effects of exercise on senior’s brain function. Joyce Gomes-Osman, Ph.D. and her colleagues looked at 98 studies that summed up over 11,000 participants. Here’s their analysis. To boost reasoning skills and the brain’s processing speed, seniors need to exercise a minimum of 52 hours over a period of 6 months. The length of time in months and minimum number of hours/ week are linked to improved thinking skills. Healthy seniors in the study showed gains in executive function--the brain’s ability to set and achieve goals, plan ahead, and strategize. That executive center also deals with self-monitoring and inhibitions. Low-intensity exercise such as walking—the most common exercise studied—reaped benefits. In other studies, the results of biking, dancing, strength training, yoga and tai chi, were the same. But beware a lowered number of hours--34 hours in 6 months--did not produce significant changes. If you regularly exercise 5-6 hours/week, you are way ahead of the game! Twenty-six percent of those studied had signs of MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) and 15 percent had fully developed dementia. The beneficial effect was noted among both those deemed clinically healthy and those who had MCI. To dive deeper, I suggest signing up for the upcoming: “Boost Your Brain and Memory.” Components of the program not only include the benefit of physical activity, but cover emotional health, intellectual activity, nutrition, spiritual activity and social engagement—all stimulants to healthy brain function. The class number is limited. If you miss this class, be sure you’re on the waiting list for the next one. If you’d like to meet with me for consultation on fitness and/or Blue Zones, please leave your name and phone number with the receptionist at the Senior Center. Boost Your Brain and Memory
All seniors want to maintain their mental capacities as long as possible. Being informed is a key to our overall physical and mental wellbeing. An opportunity to learn strategies to maintain our brain health and memory is available to seniors in the Klamath Basin. Starting in September, KBSCC will again sponsor Boost Your Brain and Memory, an 8 week course designed by the Mather Lifeways Institute on Aging. What is Mather Lifeways? For more than 70 years, this not-for-profit, award winning, nondenominational organization, founded by Alonzo Mather, has been dedicated to developing and implementing ways to age well. Boost Your Brain and Memory was created by Mather Lifeways in conjunction with experts from Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago and The University Center for Cognitive Wellness. Designed on evidence-based research, this program uses whole-person approaches that provide older adults with practices that can help them live a healthier lifestyle as well as remember things better, be more organized, pay closer attention, and regulate their emotions. The program demonstrates what older adults can do now to reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Follow up studies (2013) showed that participants who had completed the program were more optimistic and self-confident about maintaining their memory. The class is limited to 12 participants, and is low-keyed, friendly and supportive. Participants will be encouraged to set goals and share their own experience and knowledge. This program is intended for older adults who do not have diagnosed dementia. It is recommended for adults who are motivated to protect and enhance their mind's capacities. Those registering for the class are asked to commit to attending at least 6 of the 8 scheduled sessions. The program will be presented at the Klamath Basin Senior Center on eight consecutive Thursday from 10 to 11:30 A.M. A donation of $10.00 is recommended to cover the program workbooks and materials. If you have questions call the Klamath Basin Senior Center: (541) 883-7171. Boost Your Brain and Memory will be presented by Kate Murphey RN. Classes will begin: Thursday, September 27th at 10 am Senior Center Conference Room. Registration is now open and space may still be available.

Diabetes Awareness
Bulletin
The YMCA Senior Excursion
Article respectfully submitted by Klamath Hospice
What is diabetes? Simply put, diabetes is when blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal. This happens because the body is not making enough insulin or isn’t using it like it should which results in sugar building up in your blood. Signs and symptoms of diabetes could include: increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, slow healing sores, frequent infections, extreme hunger, blurred vision, increased fatigue, irritability, and tingling/pain/numbness in hands/feet. Complications of diabetes can be serious. They could include, but are not limited to, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lowerextremity amputation. Risk factors for developing diabetes can include: age, obesity, family history, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, lack of physical activity, and race/ethnicity. Suggestions for prevention include: 1. Increase physical activity. Aerobic and resistance training can help reduce the risk of and control diabetes. 2. Eat enough fiber. Foods high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. 3. Increase consumption of whole grains. Whole grains may reduce the risk for diabetes and help to maintain blood sugar levels. 4. Lose extra weight. Being overweight increases the risk of developing diabetes. Focus on losing weight slowly, and by making healthy food choices not by taking part in fad diets. Contact your primary care physician to discuss your risk factors for developing diabetes, and for guidance in taking steps to reduce your risk or manage this disease.
