Welcome We are thankful this month for the wonderful turn out and show of support for the Senior Center at our rummage sale in late July. We raised more than we anticipated and finished the event reaffirmed that we live in a community that will rise to the occasion when times get tough. Many thanks to all that volunteered and especially to J.W. Kerns Irrigation for allowing the Center the use of a vacant building for the event.
and Falcon Heights. We are currently working on a new service for Keno and will be receiving input from other communities about what the needs may be. So, once again, I ask that we hear from you about your service needs. Although we seem to be living in trying times, financially, I remain confident that we live in a place where the sense of community is great. When we live that sense of community we will move on. Join Us! We Celebrate Life! Marc Kane, Executive Director Marc Kane, Center Director

We still have many challenges to meet to sustain our services to seniors into the future, so you will likely see more events throughout the next year. Most importantly will be the United Way drive kicking off in September. We trust that the community will show its strength in that effort supporting not only the Senior Center but many other worthy community causes there as well. Many of the member agencies collaborate, that’s what we do in smaller communities. As an example the Senior Center meals program benefits greatly from The Food Bank which supplies the Senior Meals Program with food supplies. The Center will also be banking on increased interest in our volunteer programs moving into the future. It appears funding from all sources are taking a hit and we will need to build our volunteer base. Volunteers are the foundation of the Senior Center and will continue to be the base upon which we build our programs. This Fall we are recruiting for new volunteers to help build a Senior Snow Removal and Neighborhood Support Program. The program will be taking over management of the City’s Low Income Senior Snow Removal program and building a system of supports for seniors in each neighborhood where we identify seniors in need. Call Cheryl Gibbs, the volunteer coordinator, to let her know how you can help.
The Board of Director’s Development Committee continues to be actively meeting to discuss fund raising, new program development and to develop a strategic plan. They will be seeking input from the whole community through various events, but you don’t have to wait to hear from them. All are welcome to call the Center any time to express your thoughts on what you would like to see from your Senior Center. When I say “your center” I mean that this Center belongs to the whole community, aims to serve the whole community and looks forward to hearing from the whole community. This Fall new transportation services will be offered by the Senior Center to some outlying areas such as Keno, Merrill, Malin , Bly,

HAPPY SUMMER! ! !
ALL ABOUT SHIBA: This month I would like to tell you about a free service we offer to seniors to navigate the Medicare and supplemental insurance maze. Through the State of Oregon we provide the Senior Health Insurance Benefit Assistance (or SHIBA) counseling for seniors. This is a NO COST insurance checkup to benefit you and yours, depending on YOUR needs and prescription drugs. With all the Affordable Healthcare Act changes a-coming you may want to check in for a free counseling session. Counseling sessions are available by appointment by calling KBSCC at 541-883-7171. SHIBA sessions are available YEAR ROUND, not just during Open Enrollment. So call now. . . . and beat the rush! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: In the works for volunteering is our sign up for snow removal! I know, we just got Spring and I am talking SNOW! We have seniors throughout the Basin that are unable to shovel their walkways and sidewalks. We are now taking names/applications from those who would like to volunteer in their own neighborhoods (or close proximity) to help these seniors out. Also, High School service clubs are invited to volunteer to “adopt” a neighborhood of seniors to help with minor yard maintenance and/ or snow removal. FOR VETERANS: We now have a certified Annual Service Officer to provide assistance to veterans, their dependents, widows, and orphans. These are for medical benefits ONLY. By Appointment only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Also, Veterans Social Club meets every Thursday from 10 am to Noon for a relaxed get together and information sharing. All our Vets WELCOME. FACTS and THANK YOU to all the volunteers for all their hard work in the past year. You are our foundation and our future. Volunteers dedicated a total of 24,739 hours to KBSCC in 2012. We would be unable to function and deliver services to the seniors and people with disabilities of Klamath County without our valued volunteers. REMEMBER: Now is the time to volunteer-it doesn’t take a lot of time but it does make a BIG difference. To sign up call Cheryl Gibbs, Volunteer Coordinator 541-883-7171 Ext 128.

Poet ’s Corner THE HUMMINGBIRD ENCOUNTER By Sharon Hudson His wings move with Purpose and speed The hummingbird shows Radiant colors indeed He flies in the direction That he wants to go Making a humming sound That seems to grow He has a long beak But has tiny feet He sits on the fence Waiting his turn to eat The one that is the toughest He will eat first The nectar will satisfy His hunger and his thirst They scold each other In a vicious way Then go in different directions With a fearless display Have you ever looked at one Straight in the eyes? I did one day, on my screened Porch, What a surprise! Intent was his stare and He was curious as could be I ushered him off so He could be free

WHAT ARE THE “GOLDEN YEARS” ANYWAYS? By Audrey E. Davis
The “Golden Years”…WHAT IS THAT? I think they are different than we always heard We were told they would be the best years of our life But for some of us..That is absurd There’s pain in the neck, pain in the hands And probably pain in the knee We can’t see as well, our glasses are tri-focal And gee whiz..We can’t even find our memory
TRUE LOVE By Betty VanRansler Tis a song for all seasons I’m writing to you No rhyme or no reason For the things that I do How do you put up with
That’s not how it’s suppose to be When young we partied, we traveled, we danced a lot Now one foot doesn’t know what it’s suppose to do The other one is just tied in knots
How do you go along with
The more we sit…the stiffer we get So this is not the way So, we must forget the years, get on our feet With the Lords help, we could feel younger than our kids…someday!
Some of them crazy
So, just keep moving, there’s lots to do The “Golden Years” waits for no one now And who knows…if we try hard enough and fast enough Our “Golden Years” may turn to “Diamond Years” (WOW )
All my schemes All my dreams
Some of them sane God only knows Why you remain Here by my side
THE OCEAN By Audrey E. Davis
Through this turbulent life
As I sat watching the waves come ashore Many thoughts of this beautiful sight came to me I could see the big ships moving back and forth, as they go And I could imagine the sailors on board at sea
As my loving wife
How great is the power of our heavenly Father To have created this vast ocean before us Yet how simple for him in his majestical way It was done almost without fuss
You continue to stay
Sometimes the skies cloudy And I’ll say it’s blue Sometimes I’m contrary Just for something to do But if you ever left me
The huge ships that take us from place to place On high seas, and through storms of motion With God’s guiding hand leading all the way Across this beautiful water, called the Pacific Ocean
What would I do? Come rain or come shine I’ll always love you

Diabetes: An Overview By Holly Montjoy, MD
Diabetes mellitus (DM) exists in several forms. There is diabetes mellitus type I which means the body is not producing enough insulin. DM type II means the body is producing insulin but is unable to use it appropriately and sometimes, when present for a long time and uncontrolled, can progress to being a combined production and utilization issue. Gestational diabetes is similar to diabetes mellitus II but develops in pregnant women. Diabetes mellitus type II is the most common form of the disease. The harm from all types of diabetes originates with there being too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Why is this dangerous? When our blood is thickened it predisposes us to illnesses such as stroke and heart attack. It can also cause peripheral vascular disease or bad blood flow to our arms and legs. This is why some folks with diabetes will have a difficult time with wound healing; there just isn’t enough blood flow to the area damaged to allow it to heal properly and/or efficiently. Uncontrolled diabetes commonly causes a very frustrating process called peripheral neuropathy, which may feel like constant burning, tingling, or numbness in the arms and legs. Diabetes is also particularly dangerous to the eyes and kidneys- it is currently the leading cause of both blindness and renal failure among U.S. adults. Diabetes is diagnosed by a medical provider most often using a test called a Hemoglobin A1C. This is a measure of the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin molecules and estimates the average amount of glucose in the patient’s blood over a three month period. In pregnancy and some other

medical conditions, such as anemia, other testing is used to diagnose the disease. There is an early form of diabetes which is called pre-diabetes and means that the person carrying the diagnosis is at a higher risk of developing diabetes. It is very important if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes to control your blood glucose. Uncontrolled DM can severely shorten your life span and cause lots of unnecessary trouble along the way. Your physician or provider can help you decide what your A1C goal should be based on your age and other medical conditions. You may also need to have your A1C checked every three months initially. You can help control your blood glucose with lifestyle changes: exercising frequently (at least 150 minutes/week), changing your diet (avoiding carbohydrates and saturated fats), and losing weight. To help control your diabetes your medical provider may suggest checking your blood glucose level at home, a test known as a “CBG” or capillary blood glucose. You may also need medications for your diabetes as well as for high cholesterol and general heart health. Lastly, you should make sure you are receiving yearly foot and eye exams. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes try not to get down on yourself- this is a disease that you can control. The good news is that our providers here in town are well-equipped to help you through this battle. Ultimately, controlling your diabetes will result in fewer medical complications, less doctor’s visits/hospitalizations, and a longer, healthier, happier life. Now that’s sweet.

MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO AROUND
Fee increases taking effect this month. Membership fees suspended. Effective August 1st new fees went into effect for the Klamath Senior Center Vans. Riders have been getting notice for the past four weeks from the dispatcher as individuals have called in to schedule rides. A rate schedule has been established that allows discounts for those in lower household income brackets. Those wishing to claim a discount from the new rates will need to complete a form making that request and declaring the size of the household and the household income. Only riders that request the discount will need to complete the form. Information is available from the transportation office at the Senior Center that explains the new fare policies. Seniors riding directly into the Center are transported free of charge, but riders being transported to other locations will be required to pay fees. Persons riding the Center vans will have to make payment at time of pickup with correct change, or payments may be made in advance at the Center to establish an account from which fees will be charged. Persons attending the Saturday morning Nickel BINGO will now pay a dollar at the door, up from $.50. The Golden Age Club which meets at the Center on Mondays and Thursdays will also be increasing their door fee to match that of the Center’s Saturday morning fee. The Board of Directors recently instructed staff to discontinue sending membership renewal notices until a new membership program is developed by the Members’ Council. The Members’ Council is working on developing a new fee structure and offering a member’s card that will come with benefits or rewards good at the Center and area businesses. It is expected that the $5.00 annual fee will increase when the new program is announced. So until a new program is developed no membership renewal notices will be issued. In place of the renewal notices letters will be sent asking for whatever level of support donation the recipient would like to provide. Patrons of the Center are encouraged to make suggestions to the Member’s Council relating to benefits they may find of value and to also request whatever services they believe the Center should add to its offerings.
