Welcome I am proud to have introduced a new initiative this year with the Low Income Senior Snow Removal Project. It’s about a lot more than snow. It aims to match up neighbors with seniors in need throughout the community. It is also designed as a means to raise funds for our Senior Meals Programs. See details in an article on page 11. The program has, Marc Kane, Center Director however, run into some unexpected challenges in recruiting volunteers that we hope to overcome before year’s end. Please read about it, and if you have a desire to support an elderly neighbor let us know. We will gladly take you on as a volunteer. Your task may be as close as the house next door. We have hopes that over time this program will become a year around neighborhood senior watch and support program. The year’s end is now fast approaching and I must say to be gladly put behind. It was a tough year in which the Center saw decreases in much of its sustaining income, primarily from government sources. So we begin to look forward with a plea for new support. We especially need to receive commitments from those willing to make ongoing gifts. The year is nearly over and the opportunity to gain a tax deduction for 2013 will end soon. Our hope is that you will direct that last gift of the year to your elderly neighbors who receive support from the Senior Center. Note the donation coupon on this page. We are especially looking for match support this month to a recent challenge grant made by the KMSB Foundation. They will grant an additional dollar (up to $17,000) for every dollar raised this month to repair and upgrade our kitchens and bathrooms. The kitchen serves up over 70,000 meals each year to seniors so our kitchen needs to be kept up and in compliance with health standards. During the year a number of new activities were introduced. They included educational classes, exercise and health opportunities, dance classes and computer skills training to name the most prominent. These services are also the result of donation support. There are so many folks to thank as the year ends. I would like to especially recognize two organizations, the United Way and the
Herald and News. United Way brings us much support each year for our meals and transportation programs from many employees and employers whose names we sometimes never know. Thanks to all who give support through their United Way gift. The Herald and News manages this publication for the Senior Center at no cost. It is a huge boost of support to the Center to have been given the ability to communicate in this way. We hope you find the publication informative and useful. Perhaps you will end and begin a year with us at our New Year’s Eve BINGO extravaganza, our biggest fundraiser of the year. It’s a great evening of fun and good cheer. Join Us! We Celebrate Life!

Feature Dog lovers never stop wanting a dog, but as we grow older, it may be more challenging to adopt a new dog and care for it responsibly. Dogs need to be exercised, let in and out, and trained. Still, that feeling never goes away. We need the unconditional love, affection and companionship a pet provides. If you long for a dog but aren’t up to caring for one, it may be time to consider a different way of meeting these needs.

Nine Tips to Help Someone Grieving During the Holidays
Article submitted by Klamath Hospice For many people, the holiday season is a special time of year marked by celebrations and gatherings with family and friends. For those struggling with the death of a loved one, the holidays may be a difficult time full of painful reminders that emphasize their sense of loss. Often, friends and family members of those affected by a loss are unsure how to act or what to say to support their grieving loved one during the holidays. Hospice professionals, who are experienced at helping people deal with grief and loss, offer some suggestions: 1. Be supportive of the way the person chooses to handle the holidays. Some may wish to follow traditions; others may choose to avoid customs of the past and do something new. It’s okay to do things differently. 2. Offer to help the person with decorating or holiday baking. Both tasks can be overwhelming for someone who is grieving. 3. Offer to help with holiday shopping. Share catalogs or online shopping sites that may be helpful. 4. Invite the person to join you or your family during the holidays. You might invite them to join you for a religious service or at a holiday meal where they are a guest. 5. Ask the person if he or she is interested in volunteering with you during the holidays. Doing something for someone else, such as helping at a soup kitchen or working with children, may help your loved one feel better about the holidays. 6. Donate a gift or money in memory of the person’s loved one. Remind the person that his or her loved one is not forgotten. 7. Never tell someone that he or she should be “over it.” Instead, give the person hope that, eventually, he or she will enjoy the holidays again. 8. Be willing to listen. Active listening from friends and family is an important step to helping some cope with grief and heal. 9. Remind the person you are thinking of him or her and the loved one who died. Cards, phone calls and visits are great ways to stay in touch. In general, the best way to help those who are grieving during the holidays is to let them know you care and that their loved one is not forgotten. Many people are not aware that their community hospice is a valuable resource that can help people who are struggling with grief and loss. More information about grief is available from Caring Connections, www.caringinfo.org/grief.

Why you should shop a thrift store during the holidays... Article submitted by Klamath Hospice
It’s cheap and fun. Thrift stores are inexpensive and prices are usually only a fraction of the cost you would pay for the same stem new at a retail store. You may pay $4 for a barely used coffee maker or $20 for a brand new leather jacket. There is typically a huge variety of merchandise, some of which is unique and interesting. Don’t be shy about digging if you really want to find a great bargain or collectible. Many items are often new or in good condition. You can often find items with the price tags still on them or only worn once. You would be surprised by the amount of barely used brandname clothing, expensive collectibles, and items that have never been used, hiding in thrift stores. It’s environmentally friendly and usually supports a good cause. You can save something, like an awesome jacket, from being thrown away. If people did not have thrift stores to donate their unwanted stuff to, most of it would likely end up in a landfill. Thrift stores are often non-profit organizations that support very worthy causes; for example, Klamath Hospice's thrift store Treasures. By purchasing something at these types of thrift stores, you are helping the environment and others in your community at the same time! If you really feel compelled by the cause, ask if they need volunteers. By being a volunteer, you get to see all the best bargains first. You’ll find things there you can’t find anywhere else. From vintage jewelry to designer name brand clothing, books, fun trinkets and unusual decorations, it’s all in one place. Wedding dresses, collectible dolls, Cabela’s boots, Harley Davidson accessories, DVDs and CDs– these are just some examples of the items you may find at a thrift store. If the thrift store is a non-profit, donations are tax deductible. Items donated are tax deductible for those who drop them off at a nonprofit thrift store and obtain a receipt. You can take advantage of sales and clearance. At thrift stores, sales and clearance items make things even less expensive. Often you can find 50% to 75% off sales and even bag sales where everything you can fit into your bag is one low priceusually just a few dollars.
Stretch you dollar and find some amazing things! Christmas trees, lights, santas, ornaments, glass balls, silk flowers, snowmen, angels, wreaths, garland, nativity scenes, tins, Christmas villages, candles, dinnerware, and much more!

A goal of this program is to identify seniors in need of support and match them up with their neighbors to receive that support. So initially we want to simply match volunteers with seniors in their own neighborhood, possibly with people they already know. Eventually the program may expand to other support services and become like a “Senior Watch Program”.

The City has had a project for years that provides shoveling at no cost to low income eligible seniors. It was accomplished by paying contractors to do the work. This year the Senior Center has come to an agreement with the City wherein our volunteers will perform this work and in exchange the Senior Center will receive funds that will support our senior meals programs such as the Meals-On-Wheels. This Winter the Center could earn as much as $10,000 for the meals programs in this way. It is a unique use of volunteers in one project to benefit another worthwhile effort. The Center provides about 70,000 meals a year so we need a lot of help.
