Welcome Welcome back to Active Senior. June is the month our board is asked to approve a budget for the next year . It takes a great deal of effort and sacrifice to build a budget that meets the demands of these challenging economic times. Hard decisions had to be made Marc Kane, Center Director with a reduction in staff once again. To those who whose jobs we had to sacrifice this year we extend our prayers and hopes that their futures will bring new employment if needed or other activities that maintain their spirit. We also extend our appreciation for all that they contributed in the years they were with us. We hope all our readers will do the same. The good news about the budget is that we have developed a plan of action that will allow us to operate in the “black”, a far cry from the most recent year when the center invested over a $100,000 from its reserves to keep the doors open. Contributors are asked to help us rebuild those funds. We will have to rely on volunteers more than ever as we respond to ever increasing demands for service and support. So I am pleased to announce the appointment of Cheryl Gibbs as our new volunteer coordinator. You can read more about her in a new page for this publication starting this month that will be dedicated just to volunteers. Here you will be able to read about the accomplishments of our volunteers and also see what opportunities may be available if you would like to join our volunteer ranks. This last month I visited our senior meals site in Chiloquin and was pleased to find a nutritious and tasty meal there served by friendly and very capable folks. Please read more about my visit in the feature article later in this publication. We have extended an invitation to our friends in Lake County to provide more information about goings on for seniors in Lake County. My congratulations to Charlie Tveit who recently was
named as the new CEO of the Lake District Hospital and who has submitted information this month for our Lake County page. Lots going on with his organization of value to seniors and others. Finally new opportunities have opened at the Center with the approval by the board this last month to allow vendors to present their wares and services from a vendor table within the center. This last month two insurance vendors took advantage of the opportunity as well as a crafts vendor. This is a service for our seniors, but we must make it clear that these presentations do not imply an endorsement of products or services on the part of myself or the Senior Center. This does present an opportunity for us to earn additional revenue to fund our services and make valuable information conveniently available to our seniors. Well, it is the 4th of July as this is published. A special time for us all to show appreciation for our independence and all that our country has to offer. Offer something back with your volunteer service. Join us! We celebrate life! Marc Kane Executive Director, Klamath Basin Senior Citizens’ Center

Chiloquin Senior Meal Site
In June I was able to take a trip out to our Chiloquin Senior Meals Site. The Klamath Senior Center contracts with the Klamath Tribe to provide this service once a week in Chiloquin on Wednesdays. We also contract with the Tribe to provide services in Beatty on Tuesdays and Thursday. First, I want emphasize that even though services are provided in Tribal facilities, they are open to the public on these days with seniors (60 and over) being asked for a donation if they can make one. Others pay a fee. All are welcome. So the big question is, where is the senior meal site in Chiloquin? It’s easy to get there, just turn off Hwy 97 toward the Tribal Center at 330 Chiloquin Blvd. Its not far off the Highway and on the right. Drive past the main building on your right to a second building on the right that is a congregate residence with a sizable dining hall on the end of the building. It has signage in the front that describes the building as “pe peep ‘ark” with an address at 502 Charley St. (See the picture).
The Klamath Tribal Elders Meal Site & Crafts
Joyce Berry, the Community Services Director, and Michelle Carson escorted me to the lunch program and introduced me to two very pleasant, sociable and apparent very capable staff. The chicken pot pie served that day was to die for. Lots of chicken and lots of flavor. The dining hall looks a lot like any small country café and is very conducive to making new friends and visiting. All of our programs are built around that concept, maintaining opportunities for seniors to remain connected with others.
After 8 weeks of Crepe Paper Flower Making Class the Elders are pictured with their completed flowers. Eloise Ohles was the instructor this year. We had at least 8 Elders at the class for a total of 14 classes. During Memorial Day week the completed flowers are placed on family gravesites. The classes were held at the Elders meal site in Chiloquin and in Beatty. Next years’ classes will begin in April. Native American Elder’s crafts are held on Tuesdays at the Beatty meal site and Fridays at the Chiloquin meal site, starting at 12:45pm. Come join the fun! Special Thanks to the Klamath Tribes Education and Employment Department for funding this activity. If you are 60 years old, are a Native American from a recognized tribe, live in Klamath County and want to receive information about the Elders activities, events and meals we offer, please:
If you are looking a good meal and friends, visit the Chiloquin Senior Meal Site.
Contact Michelle Carson at (541) 7832219 Ext. 122 and ask to be placed on our Native American Elders Mailing List.

14 Attendees to the 7th Annual Native Caring Conference in Pendleton The Klamath Tribes Community Services Department Respite Program took 14 family care providers and Elders to the 7th Annual Native Caring Conference in Pendleton, Oregon on March 28-29, 2012. Everyone that attended this year’s conference said that this was the best one so far and the providers that attended for the first time said it was excellent. This was a very busy 2 day conference for Native Care Providers to learn about taking care of themselves. This conference offers information on personal health, exercise, mental health, stress management, dementia & its challenges, fire & fall prevention, elder abuse, hands on home health, and great entertainment. The Respite Program has been able to take several providers and Elders to this conference for the past 7 years and will be taking some providers and Elders to next year’s conference at Chinook Winds Casino & Resort in March 2013.

The Golden Sunbeam
Imagination
by Robert G. Black
by Audrey E. Davis
Through darkened clouds the setting sun Has cast its golden beam upon The growing grass, the budding tree, The misty brook, and me.
The room is crowded with hundreds of people, From all over the world they have been sent! They are eagerly awaiting the time they will meet ME! THE FIRST U.S. WOMAN PRESIDENT!
Highlighting every glistening leaf And every branch in bold relief With golden raindrops hanging still From every twig upon the hill.
Another time, I peek through the curtains, I see every famous movie and TV star, both woman and man. Because this is open night for ME! THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS COMEDIENNE! Now I look in the mirror, it shines with lights, The diamonds in my rings, shine like the stars in space! And the big heavy diamonds that hang from my ears... Pulls the wrinkles right out of my face!
Amid these darkened clouds of gray Where lightning flashes still hold sway This golden sunbeam lets me know That Light still shines on us below
My husband comes home - I tell him these things, I know he wonders about my mentality, But all he says, in a very kind voice is “Please give me my Lazy-Boy chair, and come back to reality!”
For in the daily trials we face, When all seems dark with no good place To sit alone and rest awhile Before we rise to walk the mile.
He didn’t realize what fun I had had, being President, A famous funny person, filthy rich and all, But he broke my concentration... So - now I go back, to being...”just plain ole me” Without my IMAGINATION!
This sets my dark emotions free; That golden sunbeam helps me see That even in the darkest hour, The sun is there with all its power.
Melting Snow by Robert G. Black
Water trickles, bubbles, gushes From beneath the melting snow, Running down to puddle quietly IN the places that are low; A wonder that we take for granted: Gravity that pulls below.
Freezing, thawing, water running Down every slight incline; Snowbanks thawing, soaking, warming Laws set down by hands divine Seeds soak up life-giving water Seedlings burst from soil benign.
Ah, warmer days have blessed our land With longer hours of sun; Slowly melting, disappearing, The thawing had begun Snow and ice now crunch and crackle Underfoot as children run.
The miracle of life renewed Has followed winter’s rest. Swelling buds of leaves and flowers Survive life’s sternest test. Life has slumbered, cold and weary Now it’s time for springtime’s best.

Submitted by Charlie Tveit, COO, Lake District Hospital
What’s New We finally got to plant in our courtyard. We put in some new flowers, some herbs, strawberries, and tomato plants. Now we just have to wait for the harvest! The Dementia Series put on by Long Term Care is well underway and has seen a nice turnout of community members. We still have three more classes so it’s not too late to come check it out and get some valuable information. Our remaining classes will be July 26th on Behavior Management Beyond Medications, August 23rd on Safety needs of the Elderly and September 27th on How to plan for family members with Dementia. Mark your calendars and come join us. Pastor Eric has one class left in his Spirituality Series. July 17th from 5-7:00 p.m. he will be speaking on Spiritual
Health and Healing. This is the last one in the series. You don’t want to miss it. Our room re-furbishing is continuing. Our maintenance man Victor is doing a great job and moving along at a pretty good clip. We should be finished before you know it. We were fortunate to be able to send three of our Staff members to a wonderful program “Dementia Beyond Drugs with Dr. G. Allen Power” in Portland. The program was put on by “Making Oregon Vital for Elders”. It was a great opportunity to hear first hand this powerful message. As you may know, Gordon Ensley is stepping down as our CEO and Long Term Care Administrator. Gordon will be missed by all. His caring, compassion and leadership has been instrumental in making Long Term Care the Five Star Facility it is today.

Volunteer News
Volunteer News
Greetings, Salutations, and HIDEE HO! I am so glad to now be a part of the Klamath Basin Senior Citizen Center. The main reason I am so excited is that I have just realized what a great resource we have in our community at the KBSCC. We have a minimal number of paid staffonly the absolute minimum to enable us to deliver services to our Klamath Country Seniors - the rest fall on our very special volunteers. (Of which I am one!) I have found we have volunteers for the Meals of Wheels, transportation, Bingo, home visits, Gift Shop, and probably others I haven’t found yet. . Our volunteers serve many, many hours annually but we always are in need of more; hence, ME! I have the task of finding the volunteers and matching them with the tasks or inter-
ests that benefit both of us. ANYONE can volunteer and that does not mean 4-6 hours a week regularly (though that would be nice!); but even just 1-2 hours per week or even for just one particular project. ANY TIME you can spare allows us to extend our services to those who will benefit the most-our seniors; those who gave us life, raised us, and supported us through all our activities, goals and dreams. Now is the time to return the favor by giving of your time—be it 1 hour, 4 hours- regular or one time only. With this in mind, I will be featuring the Warm Fuzzy Chore of the month. Some will be more appropriate for service clubs, some for one-time individuals, or regular commitment of a few hours each week/month. If interested in volunteering, please contact me at KBSCC.
